TCW Podcast Episode 239 - Nintendo: Wii Were Struggling Nintendo's struggle for cultural relevance in the lead-up to the Wii was marked by the N64's poor fit for Japanese homes and the GameCube's failure to outsell even the fledgling Xbox globally. Internally, a power struggle unfolded as Hiroshi Yamauchi prepared to retire. Former Sharp executive Atsushi Asada was brought in and became Executive Vice President and later Chairman of the Board. Satoru Iwata, whom Yamauchi saw great potential in, was appointed president of HAL Laboratory as part of a Yamauchi-backed bailout and ultimately succeeded Yamauchi as president of Nintendo. Minoru Arakawa was passed over, removed from the board, and after his retirement, replaced at Nintendo of America by Tatsumi Kimishima, who was later placed on the board himself, giving credence to the idea that Arakawa was pushed aside in favor of Iwata. We explore how, despite not facing financial collapse, Nintendo risked losing its creative identity after two struggling consoles and Sony's rising threat to its handheld dominance. The line between groundbreaking innovation and controversial ownership blurs when scientists begin creating life in laboratories. What happens when your invention isn't just a device or chemical formula, but a living, breathing, self-replicating organism that refuses to stay contained within traditional legal boundaries?Synthetic biology—the field where engineering meets genetics—has created a perfect storm for intellectual property law. Scientists can now design cells like software, program bacteria to clean oil spills, and edit genes with CRISPR technology. But who owns these inventions when they start reproducing themselves? From the landmark 1980 Chakrabarty decision that first allowed patents on genetically modified bacteria to the controversial Myriad Genetics case that determined human genes cannot be patented, we explore the fascinating legal battles that shaped biotech innovation. We journey through courtrooms worldwide where judges grappled with unprecedented questions: Can you patent a cloned sheep? Should farmers be allowed to replant patented seeds? Does traditional knowledge about medicinal plants deserve protection from corporate "biopiracy"?The legal landscape continues evolving, with a brand new WIPO treaty requiring disclosure of genetic resources' origins in patent applications. This represents a major shift toward transparency and fairness, especially for communities whose biodiversity and traditional knowledge have contributed to modern innovations.Whether you're a scientist, lawyer, entrepreneur, or simply curious about the legal frameworks governing emerging technologies, this episode offers crucial insights into how intellectual property systems are adapting to the brave new world where the line between invention and life itself becomes increasingly blurred. Donald Trump issued several executive orders punishing law firms who represented clients or causes he didn't like. Four of the law firms sued him, arguing his executive orders were unconstitutional. Given a new court ruling in favor of the fourth law firm, it's a clean sweep - Trump and his DOJ have now lost all four cases. But, it's something of a surprise, with just one day left to appeal his first loss, Trump's DOJ has filed an appeal to one of those cases. If you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support Glenn and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/glennkirschn...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/glennkirschner2See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A new study published by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology shows that nature-friendly farming is not currently as profitable as intensive food production. Its authors say the report is the first of its kind and shows that agroecology improves biodiversity and can boost crop yields. However, the cost of creating habitats and the loss of some productive land, they say, means lower profits. Dr Ben Woodcock led the four year study which studied 17 farms.More big food companies are paying producers who farm regeneratively a premium, encouraging them to improve soil health, increase on-farm biodiversity and reduce their carbon footprint. Nestle is working with the farmers' cooperative First Milk to collect data from 80 UK farmers who supply them with milk and are being paid a premium to farm regeneratively. We visit one of their dairy farmers in Cumbria. One of the farmers seeking a judicial review of the treasury's decision to impose inheritance tax on farm businesses says the government failed to consult properly on changes to the tax. We recap the session and discuss what the rulings might mean for Texas and Houston with the help of law professor Charles “Rocky” Rhodes. Also this hour: On this date in 1986, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Bowers v. Hardwick, saying states could criminalize gay sex between consenting adults. In 2003, the decision in Lawrence v. Texas overturned that. We revisit a 2023 conversation with Mitchell Katine, the local attorney for the plaintiffs in the Lawrence case who spoke with us on the 20th anniversary of that ruling. Then, recent incidents, such as the murder of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband and the forcible removal of Sen. Alex Padilla from a press conference, might lead us to believe political vitriol and discord have reached unprecedented heights. But that's not necessarily true. Author Zaakir Tameez joins us to discuss his new biography of Charles Sumner, an abolitionist senator nearly beaten to death for opposing slavery and what it can tell us about our political climate today. And Jeff Balke joins us to assess the first half of the Astros' season.

X: @ASwoyer @americasrt1776 @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Alex Swoyer, attorney, legal affairs reporter for The Washington Times and author of "Lawless Lawfare." Alex Swoyer has a unique look at the crumbling of our nation's justice system as a lawyer and member of the Supreme Court bar. She has had a seat inside the Supreme Court, federal courthouses, and halls of Congress during her more than a decade of experience covering national politics and Capitol Hill. She's watched Trump's high stake litigation unfold and has witnessed the impact his cases have had on various industries outside the legal world—including increasing the political divide and distrust in the media. She's licensed to practice law in Texas. About the Book: An insider's look into Democrats' scorched-earth strategy to upend the judicial system by targeting President Donald Trump, his allies, and supporters. Those suffering from TDS—Trump derangement syndrome—are motivated to transform the federal judiciary into a political battleground in order to lock him up and keep him out of the White House. Democrats' attempt failed when Trump won the 2024 election, but Lawless Lawfare cautions us on how to not let history repeat itself in order to preserve the equal application of justice and keep politics out of the courtroom. Lawless Lawfare provides readers with a play-by-play analysis of the court cases that plagued Donald Trump as he campaigned for a second administration, written by reporter and attorney Alex Swoyer who has had access to the courtroom, oral arguments, high profile lawyers, and thousands of court filings during the former president's legal battles up and down the East Coast. Lawless Lawfare lays out why each case was set up to fail because it relied on politics instead of the law, running afoul of Trump and voters' constitutional rights. The result is an increasing division among the electorate, as well as shock across media platforms when verdicts against Trump get overturned on appeal and prosecutions plummet. "Today, our fellow-Americans face significant challenges, including the serious threat of lawfare which is not only eroding trust in the nation's courts, this modern-day assault on the democratic process is weakening the rule of law and the future of our Republic." — Natasha Srdoc On the topic Lawfare, one of America's greatest threats from within: "While I am pleased each time I see one of President Trump's cases dismissed, I can't help but reflect on the dark stain these last few years have left on our nation's reputation and integrity. The lawfare, lies, deception, and collusion have caused irreparable damage to many of our institutions. It's perhaps the greatest act of desperation in the history of American politics, yet it was soundly rejected by We the People. I pray the American people will remember this when the left inevitably tries it again and that we ALWAYS choose liberty over tyranny." — Dr. Ben Carson, chairman, American Cornerstone Institute and former cabinet secretary in President Trump's first administration. "Democrats faced a critical choice last year: Try to win an election by confronting the real problem of a weak and old president presiding over unpopular far-left policies, or try to rig an outcome by embracing a lawfare stratagem. They chose the latter." — Kimberly Strassel, The Wall Street Journal americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://summitleadersusa.com/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 X: @ASwoyer @americasrt1776 @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Watch the full coverage of the live stream on The Emily D Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/_U9Gv2ieltoDay 29 of the Karen Read Retrial happened on June 9, 2025. On week 8 of the trial, will the jury get the case this week to deliberate?Special Prosecutor, Hanke Brennan, asks Dr. Wolfe, the Director of Accident Reconstruction at ARCCA, about the appearance of holes on the back of Mr. O'Keefe's hoodie and whether these holes are consistent with road rash or other damage. He asked him if he'd ever consider if Mr. O'Keefe may have fallen or landed on his back. Dr. Wolf stated he did not consider whether Mr. O'Keefe had fallen or landed on his back. Defense Attorney, Robert Alessi, asked for a Mistrial with Prejudice due to Intentional Misconduct by the prosecution regarding questioning about the hoodie and its damage. The defense argued the prosecution intentionally left out evidence about the holes on the back of the hoodie being clippings from the crime lab. The case over Google's monopoly is over, and now we wait to see what the penalties might be. Nebraska wants to make social media less addictive for kids with a new law. Germany might tax Facebook and Google more. Microsoft's carbon footprint continues to rise. I did not expect AI slop to be SO popular that now real people are trying to copy AI. And Sony might move XPERIA manufacturing to a third party.
