Former McKeesport, Penn State and NFL LB Brandon Short joined the show. Brandon endured a personal tragedy that resulted in the death of his daughter and her unborn child 5 years ago. With that, he setup the Karli Short Better Tomorrow Foundation. He told Chris about what the foundation means to him and his family, and the rest of the community. Growing up in McKeesport, Brandon talked about his own experience with government funding and getting helped with meals, and how he may not have ended up reaching the career heights without that. Chris asked Brandon about the renovations being done at Beaver Stadium. Brandon reflected on the career of Mike Tomlin and the transition to Mike McCarthy in Pittsburgh. KDKA Meteorologist Mary Ours joined the show. The conversation started with Mary's singing ability and performing at events over the years. The guys told Mary about Donny's wedding over the weekend in Johnstown, but what is there to do there? Mary shared her ideal weather on any given day. Back to music – the guys challenged Mary to sing a few songs acapella-style on the spot. Randy Ford from Exubria Home Healthcare joined the show. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Cody McDevitt. A White Man and award winning journalist, McDevitt is a Pennsylvania resident and the founder of the Rosedale Oral History Project. Last week, Gus T. spoke with Dr. Emily Leib last week, and she told us that her White grandparents are Beaver County residents. Gus checked immediately, and, of course, Beaver County is a Racially Restricted Region of western Pennsylvania - which Dr. Leib seemed to already know. Upon further investigation, Gus found out that Racists purged a group of black people from this region in 1933. A tad south, Racists in Johnstown also kicked out their population of dark people a decade earlier. McDevitt penned Banished from Johnstown: Racist Backlash in Pennsylvania. This book reveals much about the System of White Supremacy and what it means to be classified as White. Interestingly, so called Mexicans were also told to “beat it” along with the niggras. However, there was intervention on their behalf that was not extended to black people. Pay particular attention to Mr. McDevitt's response to Gus's definition of Racism and his constant references to other non-white people's books and views on Racism. I love receiving fan mail, and so I clicked on this person's profile to see who he was, beyond his profile picture.What I found was an artist who works in one of the most interesting mediums: Pat is a metal forger who helps run and teach newcomers how to forge and shape metal. I was immediately intrigued–when I think of forging metal and blacksmiths, I picture what is probably the most generic image: a medieval peasant, covered in cloaks with soot all over his face, hammering at a piece of metal over an anvil, with sparks flying everywhere. While some things never change, Pat's organization: The Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown, Pennsylvania is bringing something old to the new millennium. He and his colleagues host workshops where people come to learn ancient arts that result in beautiful, heirloom-quality tools. It has to be seen to believed, and there is a link to the CMA in today's show notes.Then, of course, there is Pat's selection for today's episode. Pat chose to talk about Phish's performance of “Most Events Aren't Planned,” which closed set 1 of July 24, 2024 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Vida Blue original is typical for a Page McConnell song–it's mid-tempo, contains thoughtful lyrics about change and loss, and has a few time changes that whip both the band and the crowd into a frenzy.
