We had the pleasure of interviewing Fastball over Zoom video!Formed in 1994 in Austin, Texas, Fastball combined a fondness for melodic, Beatles-inspired pop with the alternative aesthetic of late-'90s mainstream rock. Guitarist/vocalist Miles Zuniga, bassist/vocalist Tony Scalzo, and drummer Joey Shuffield — all veterans of Austin's underground rock scene — originally banded together under the name Magneto U.S.A. After signing with Hollywood Records, the musicians changed their name to Fastball and released their debut album, Make Your Mama Proud, in 1996. The album demonstrated the band's synthesis of modern flavor and bygone pop hooks, a combination that would later launch Fastball into the mainstream. The follow-up effort, All the Pain Money Can Buy, appeared in early 1998, featuring a considerably tighter band and more pop flourishes. Although the bandmates were still working side jobs at the time of its release, lead-off single "The Way" proved to be a meteoric hit, topping the American rock charts for seven weeks while enjoying crossover success as a pop single. "Fire Escape" and the piano-fueled "Out of My Head" did similarly well, and All the Pain Money Can Buy went platinum within six months of its release, earning two Grammy nominations along the way. Fastball celebrated their success with a considerable amount of touring, including shows alongside Marcy Playground and Everclear. The Harsh Light of Day arrived in fall 2000, featuring piano work by Billy Preston and an increasingly arty sound, including the Top 40 hit "You're an Ocean.” Fastball eventually left the Hollywood roster in favor of a new deal with Rykodisc. A retrospective compilation, Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball, marked the band's final release for Hollywood Records in 2002. Two years later, they resurfaced with Keep Your Wig On, having fully embraced their power pop roots with the help of co-producer Adam Schlesinger. The album strengthened Fastball's work ethic, with frontmen Zuniga and Scalzo writing together for the first time. That collaborative spirit helped fuel another album, Little White Lies, which appeared in 2009 to warm reviews. After several years of focusing on live work, Fastball returned to the studio in 2015, recording in their hometown of Austin. The project emerged in May 2017, a self-released album titled Step into Light, and the band supported it with an extensive tour of the United States and Canada. The following year, Fastball celebrated the 20th anniversary of All the Pain Money Can Buy with an expanded edition of the 1998 album; they accompanied the reissue with a hometown concert in Austin, Texas. In October 2019, Fastball returned with The Help Machine, an album produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, and in Sept 2021 and on June 17, 2022 they released The Deep End.Fastball just released a brand new album called Sonic Ranch. We want to hear from you! Los Lobos' 1990 album The Neighborhood showcases their signature blend of rock, blues, and Latin influences through the lense and ears of East Los Angeles. While it didn't achieve the commercial success of La Bamba, the album captures Los Lobos' musical versatility and deep-rooted cultural influences. The band shifts from Texas blues and roots rock to old school rock 'n roll and acoustic balladry with the ease of seasoned players, with lead singer/guitarist David Hidalgo guiding the band all the way. At times the reliance on traditional blues structures can stifle the endlessly creative band by locking them into particular styles and arrangements, whereas tracks written outside the format flourish thanks to the skilled band.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Down On The Riverbed 19:17 - I Walk Alone 24:25 - The Giving Tree 26:25 - Georgia Slop 43:37 - Be Still Outro - The Neighborhood   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. JoJo GarzaTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know JoJo Garza. JoJo is the bass player for the Grammy winning Texican Rock band Los Lonely Boys. In this episode, we chat about how the Garza brothers got together and became a rock band. JoJo explains how his dad taught them all how to play nusic from a very early age. It doesn't hurt that both sides of the family have music royalty and Tejano music icons. Of course we discuss their meteoric rise to fame with their 2003 mega hit song HEAVEN, and some of the amazing things that came with it's success. JoJo shares some fun stories about meeting some of his music idols, and even a heart warming tale of Willie Nelson giving the Garza brothers the shirt off his back... sort of. Los Lonely Boys are back, with their first new album in 11 years. RESURRECTION is exactly what you want from another Los Lonely Boys album. There are several hit singles on the new record, and JoJo let's me play my favorite track from it!. Catch Los Lonely Boys on their nationwide tour; with supporting bands including: Los Lobos, Del Castillo, Texican Legacy, The Cisteros, and more. Get tour and ticket info at LosLonelyBoys.com

Tune in to hear spontaneous stories and deep reflections on their musical paths and the vibrant music scene.Quotes From The EpisodeHe looked like he had just fired down six fat ones…and he doesn't smoke…and his eyes were spinning. - Dennis McNally describing David Hidalgo after playing Jerry Garcia's Alligator guitar. The instrument's a living thing. It has a life of its own. It shouldn't be kept behind glass. It should be out in front of people. With that emotion passing through.- Jack Barton The biggest bummer about it these days is just how everybody's got a super computer in their pocket, and everybody's addicted to the shit, and unless you engage with social media, people don't know that you're active. - Sam Grisman I never imagined myself becoming a guitarist ever. I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne Honestly,  I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. And for it to come around to where it's at now.  And the friends that we've made along the way. That's why we're here today. - David HidalgoMusic LinksBertha * Deadicated * Los LobosDavid Hidalgo with Los Lobos Playing Jerry Garcia's Alligator at the Fillmore 11/16/23Brown Eyed Women - Thunderbird Music Hall - 9/25/22 - Set 2Catfish JohnJerry Garcia Band - "Mission In The Rain" - Electric On The Eel (June 10th, 1989)Teach Your Children by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 1970 (with lyrics) Links to Websiteshttps://www.dennismcnally.com/https://www.loslobos.org/site/https://www.samgrismanproject.net/https://browneyedwomen.com/https://www.bellaraynerocks.com/https://www.jackbartonentertainment.com/https://www.alexjordanjams.com/

EPISODE 119: Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Special. Erick Willis: In a time when many artists are striving to find their identity, Erick Willis is slowly leaving his mark on the scene, with a personality that is true and not just a stage persona. Taking cues from the music he was raised on Erick is blending soulful melodic lyrics, with the deep groove of roots-rock and as his lyric says, "with some of the harder stuff." Showcasing a smooth voice with an excellent upper register, uniquely gravely at times, and always pleasant to the ear, Erick is bringing lots of soul to the mix, along with undeniably Texas inspired lyrics. Robinson Treacher: At the crossroads of Blues, Folk, Americana, and Country, you'll find the music of Robinson Treacher. He has shared the stage with notable artists from Vince Gill, Arlo Guthrie, and Tedeschi Trucks Band to Los Lobos, Iris Dement, G.E. Smith, Jorma Kaukonen, and Willie Nile. Robinson has been featured on Sirius/XM's series, "The Loft: Live from The Living Room," and has been a frequent guest of legendary DJ John Platt on New York's famed WFUV Radio. A native New Yorker, Robinson was raised in formidable music scenes from downstate New York City to the upstate Adirondacks. erickwillis.com | robinsontreacher.com Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
