In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, producer/musician Steve Berlin of Los Lobos dives into the chaotic world of Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs, recounting how a hard-living local legend became the heart of an unforgettable Los Angeles roots and cow-punk scene. The band's lone album - Pigus Drunkus Maximus - has just been reissued on Blind Owl Albums and its an incredible document of early L.A punk and rock history. Berlin explains how the band's loose, rotating lineup became legendary at the Café de Grande and drew everyone from punk icons to Hollywood personalities (Van Halen recorded a song called Top Jimmy in tribute to Jimmy; and Jimmy can be seen with John Doe in the Decline of Western Civilization. In addition to our conversation about Top Jimmy, Steve and host Scott Dudelson discuss early days with the Blasters and Los Lobos, the brotherly bond that keeps Los Lobos together after 50 years, an upcoming band documentary and behind the scenes stories recording both the La Bamba soundtrack (with Willie Dixon and Carlos Santana) and Graceland with Paul Simon (for which Los Lobos wrote "All Around the World or Myth of the Fingerprints" but never received credit or royalties). This episode is a deep, personal look at LA music history told by a musician and producer who lived it. Thank you for listening.

The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Steve Berlin revisits Los Angeles during its most volatile creative period, the late 1970s and early 1980s, when rent was $170 a month and sewage regularly seeped into the Cathay de Grande, the basement club where Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs held their Monday night residency. Berlin recalls producing and playing on their newly reissued album Pigus Drinkus Maximus and joining Los Lobos after they’d spent years developing east of the LA River, completely off the west side scene’s radar. He also addresses the Graceland controversy head-on: Paul Simon’s failure to credit Los Lobos for writing the music to ‘All Around the World or The Myth of Fingerprints.’ Berlin also discusses his work with REM, producing Faith No More, and offers a moving tribute to Mavericks frontman Raul Malo.

Most musicians would only dream of opening for Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin on tour but for Rosie Flores the dream came true! Rosie drops by The City's Backyard Podcast on this episode to talk about her music, career, and new album called Impossible Frontiers with her band The Talismen! Plus she speaks about what it's like to be on the road opening for Robert Plant with Saving Grace and Suzi Dian.Rosie Flores, triple-threat Texas musician, has never allowed the challenge of navigating the male-centric worlds of rock and country music slow her down. In fact, she often drew upon those challenges as source material in sharply observed songs she not only wrote and sang with authority and passion, but also brought to life musically as a widely respected lead guitarist in a string of notable bands.Rosie is one of the 2024 NEA National Heritage Fellows! In September 2024 she accepted her gold medal award at the Library Of Congress, appearing at the Kennedy Center as well as the White House. A daughter of San Antonio whose musical journey also has included quality time in Austin, Los Angeles, and Nashville, Flores has adroitly absorbed, helped preserve, and extended the musical legacies of influential Texas musicians as varied as country music's King of Western Swing Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, blues guitar master T-Bone Walker, and Tex Mex innovator Doug Sahm.In the 1970s, she became one of the most celebrated performers on the “cowpunk” circuit (a hybrid of punk rock and country), alongside such other rising stars as Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Rank & File, and Los Lobos (2021 NEA National Heritage Fellows). The release of her 1987 debut solo album Rosie Flores proved her to be a singer and songwriter of the first rank, and helped lay the foundation for what coalesced into the alt country movement.Flores became the first Latina to crack Billboard's country music chart. For her enthusiastic participation in and ongoing promotion of Austin's deep and wide music scene, including the annual South by Southwest Conference, the city has proclaimed Rosie Flores Day in 2006.Flores has remained a spark plug live performer for more than five decades, a goosebump-inducing electric guitarist and songwriter as well as champion of the trailblazers who preceded her. Notably, she lured pioneering rockabilly heroines Wanda Jackson (2005 NEA National Heritage Fellow) and Janis Martin (“the female Elvis”) back into recording studios and onto concert stages for lauded late-career rejuvenations. Flores won a 2007 Peabody Award for her narration of the NPR rockabilly documentary, Whole Lotta Shakin'.For more on Rosie and her tour click here > https://rosieflores.com/tour/

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's dizzyingly inspired chat with legendary producer Mark Linett, the producer and audio engineer best known for his remixing and remastering of The Beach Boys' catalog. Since 1988, he's been the engineer of choice for Brian Wilson's recordings. In 1996, Linett created the first true stereo mix of Pet Sounds. He's also co-produced nearly all of the band's archival releases, including 1997's The Pet Sounds Sessions, 1998's Endless Harmony Soundtrack, 2003's Hawthorne, CA, and 2011's The Smile Sessions, as well as the Feel Flows (2021) and Sail On Sailor (2022) box sets. In addition to earning three Grammy Awards, he was nominated for Best Engineered Album for his work on 2004's Brian Wilson Presents Smile. He's also worked with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Los Lobos, Rickie Lee Jones, and Randy Newman. This is Chuck's lengthy and consistently fascinating interview with Mark from the early 2000's for his Pet Sounds book…stay tuned for my own more recent interview, which covers completely different territory. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Louie Pérez has written many great songs for Los Lobos, but “Saint Behind the Glass” is especially close to his heart. It was inspired by a saint statue from his family's home and now is part of the exhibit American Prophets: Writers, Religion and Culture at the American Writers Museum in Chicago. Perez offers that song's origin story, digs into his songwriting dynamic with singer-guitarist David Hidalgo, discusses their trippy side project the Latin Playboys, reflects on the impact of Los Lobos' smash cover of Richie Valens' “La Bamba” and says whether, 10 years after their last album of original material, Los Lobos is preparing new music. He also reveals a recent health issue and whether it affected his return to the stage, he addresses how artists can respond to the current administration's toxicity toward immigrants, and he offers inspiring words for anyone involved in the act of creation.

This week on Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dust off the record player and go head-to-head once again in The Musicwed Game — the game where friendship meets finely tuned musical instincts. Each picks five songs they believe the other will love, and whoever racks up the most correct guesses earns bragging rights as the reigning music whisperer. The playlist this round is as eclectic as ever — a sonic road trip through dusty border towns, cosmic dance floors, and smoky backroom stages. You'll hear talk of the swaggering “Canción del Mariachi” from Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos, the bittersweet twang of Glen Campbell's “Galveston,” and the glitter-soaked groove of Ace Frehley's “New York Groove.” From the haunting “This Mess We're In” (PJ Harvey featuring Thom Yorke) to the gospel fire of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” every track sparks stories, laughter, and passionate debate.Rounding out the mix are Orville Peck's outlaw spin on “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” the late-90s alt-pop gem “F.N.T.” by Semisonic, the heartfelt lift of Patty Griffin's “Top of the World,” the fiery “Malagueña Salerosa” by CHINGÓN, and the introspective “Just By Myself” from Greg Brown.Whether you're a die-hard music nerd or just love hearing two friends geek out with gusto, this episode hits all the right notes — nostalgia, discovery, and a few good-natured arguments about what makes a song perfectly Tim or undeniably Aubrey.

Halloween in the '80s wasn't all horror. Sometimes we got big laughs from the vampire flicks. //The Wire//2300Z October 16, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: MULTIPLE IED ATTACKS STRIKE ECUADOR AS CONFLICT COMBATING ILLEGAL MINING INTENSIFIES. MIDDLE EAST PEACE DEAL ON UNCERTAIN GROUND AS TENSIONS CONTINUE RISING ON ALL SIDES. VENEZUELAN MILITARY SHIP REPORTEDLY BECOMES GROUNDED DURING TRAINING MISSION.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Ecuador: The situation continues to deteriorate following a crackdown initiative targeting illegal mining operations. Many explosions have been reported over the past few days as mining groups affiliated with the Los Lobos cartel have taken to using their mining explosives in order to create IEDs targeting people and critical infrastructure. Two bridges were blown up yesterday in Guayaquil, and a Vehicle-Borne IED (VBIED) was detonated in the same city targeting the city mall. After this blast, another large IED was discovered in a vehicle somewhere in the city, which failed to explode.Analyst Comment: These IED attacks are the latest in a long series of woes in Ecuador. The situation sharply deteriorated back in 2023 with the assassination of Fernando Villavincencio, a Presidential candidate that was murdered just a few days before he was expected to win the election. This made a bad situation worse and Ecuador spiraled down into a defacto state of civil war, with belligerents mostly being aligned with the Los Choneros cartel and government forces. Over the past few months, prison riots, mass killings via gangs, and now IED blasts have become more common. The connection to why this matters to the US, is that back in 2018 one of the main power-players in Ecuador was the Tren de Aragua criminal syndicate.Venezuela: Yesterday a Venezuelan naval vessel ran aground off the coast while conducting a training mission. The ARV Capana (an amphibious landing ship) was observed by locals running aground on a sand bar, which resulted in her becoming stuck for a few hours.Middle East: The situation has remained both tense and chaotic as the return of captives' remains to Israel and various other developments continue to be a sticking point for lasting peace. Hamas officials have stated that there aren't any more remains that they can get to at the moment, which has caused tension.Analyst Comment: Major offensives remain tabled by both sides for now, however Hamas has conducted many mass-executions of alleged collaborators and/or spies, which has drawn the ire of President Trump who went as far as to threaten direct American intervention in Gaza (comments which he reversed-course on during a later press call). While that possibility is probably more of a knee-jerk threat than anything (after all, Hamas executing their own people for allegedly being spies doesn't really violate the peace agreement itself). Nevertheless, no one is out of the woods yet on this accord, and the situation can certainly flare back up into a big problem once again at the slightest provocation by any party.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This morning the White House announced that President Trump spoke with President Putin by phone, and that the conversation was very long and productive. Based on the description of the call as posted to President Trump's social media account, the call was positive and resulted in the scheduling of direct talks between the United States and Russia regarding the ending of the war in Ukraine.Analyst Comment: The implementation of higher-level direct talks with Russia is a positive sign, which has come about after weeks of decreasing relations regarding the war. The implementation of these talks also casts a bit of doubt on President Trump's previous statements regarding pushing Ukraine to conduct more offensives. Lately, there's been a lot of talk on the war by everyone involved, so it's anyone's guess as to whether or not all parties are interested in settling this war, but this wi
