#176: The Zion Narrows Revisited

Dear Bob and Sue: A National Parks Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2026 50:36

The Narrows in Zion National Park is one of the most iconic hikes in the American West. We recently returned to the park to hike the Narrows for the third time, and it's been a while since we last talked about it on this podcast. Our first Narrows episode was episode 6, six years ago, so we figured it was time for an update. If you would like information about other activities in the park, check out the Substack article we published recently: Our 10 Favorite Things to Do in Zion National Park The Narrows is a section of Zion Canyon where the Virgin River carves its way through walls that rise over a thousand feet and push in on each other, sometimes as close as thirty feet apart. There's little trail in the traditional sense. The river is the trail for about sixty percent of the hike, which makes it one of the most unique walks anywhere. In this episode, we talk through the bottom-up route that starts at the end of the Riverside Walk at the far north end of the canyon's scenic road. It's a ten-mile round trip that needs no permit and no GPS; there's really no way to get lost on this hike. We share how long it took us, how deep the water got, and what it was like returning fourteen years after our first visit. We also discuss how much Zion has changed. Visitation has nearly doubled since 2010. We describe our experience catching the very first shuttle going up canyon at 7:00am on the day of our hike and the size of the crowds waiting in line with us. And because preparation makes or breaks this one, we cover what to wear, why neoprene socks were a game changer for us, the case for a hiking stick, and our honest take on whether to bring the kids. If you're planning to hike The Narrows, this episode is for you, with practical tips throughout to help you make the most of your day in the river. A couple more helpful links: Here you can find out the current conditions and flow rates for the North Fork of the Virgin River. And for more information about this hike, here is the park's webpage about The Narrows. ----- We share our stories and ideas in a few different places. Sage Donnelly just became the Queen of the North Fork, and it's the perfect time to revisit our 2024 conversation on The Discomfort Zone Podcast, recorded when she was the reigning Women's Freestyle World Champion. Sage is a multi-discipline competitor across slalom, freestyle, and extreme racing. In this conversation, she breaks down how she trained her mind to find calm and flow at the start line and in the biggest rapids she runs. If you've ever choked under pressure on something that mattered, or wondered how the best in the world stay loose when everything's on the line, this one's for you. How Sage went from competing out of fear and expectation to competing with the kind of relaxed confidence that brought her back to the World Championship podium Why feeling a rapid in your boat matters more than overanalyzing it from the eddy The expedition that taught her she could push further than she thought possible How she manages type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and hypothyroidism without letting any of it define her Whether you're chasing a competitive goal, learning to trust your gut, or navigating a diagnosis that feels bigger than you, Sage's story has something for you.

Have you ever had a "stupid, hare-brained idea" that worked so well it took over your life for a decade? That's exactly what happened to James Byrd when he looked at the North Fork of the Payette River in Idaho, thought about his college football stadium experience, and decided the best kayakers in the world should be racing it in front of a crowd. What started as a passion project became one of the premier whitewater extreme races on the planet, the North Fork Championship, and now, after a few years away, James and his wife Regan are bringing it back. James is also a registered nurse, a lifelong paddler, and one of the most genuinely stoked people I know. This conversation went a lot of places I didn't expect, and I think you'll appreciate it. In this episode: The visualization practice James uses before stepping up to something big and scary on the water, and why he won't send it until he genuinely feels ready What it was like to get pushback when he first launched the event, and the one moment that changed everything Why he thinks kayaking athletes deserve to be known, not just watched, and what he's doing about it The real talk on money, sustainability, and what he and Regan discovered when they did the math on their nursing wages versus the hours they put into North Fork How going nonprofit is changing what's possible for the event's future If you've ever poured everything into something you believed in, hit friction, and wondered whether it was worth it, this one's for you.

Relentless in her pursuits would be an understatement because Kerrin Laz is a force of nature.  Kerrin is the type of person the wine trade needs...now. She is chock full of energy, a plethora of ideas, and a cavalcade of pathways to get there. She will be on the show again; there were too many subjects we never discussed. Sitting down with Kerrin Laz was like flipping open a well-loved journal and discovering a handful of stories you'd forgotten you needed to hear. There's a warmth to the East Coast energy she carries with her, this tenacity blended with familiarity—sort of like sipping an old-vine Zinfandel that carries the sun of California but has the grit of Long Island soil. Right out of the gate, Karen Laz reminded me of those early, stumbling steps we all take in our careers. She grew up in New York, knew Dean & DeLuca as an iconic place—couldn't resist popping in for a cup of coffee, even though her resume, as she freely admits, "had, like, nothing on it" 00:06. When asked if she preferred food or wine, she just sort of shrugged and said, "Wine, I guess." That honest uncertainty? I find that refreshing. Most people will fabricate a grand narrative about their calling, but Karen Laz is humble enough to admit a little serendipity goes a long way. But don't let that humility fool you. Ten years leading her own wine collection, a knack for knowing what guests want before they do, and the rare ability to forge real partnerships with wineries—she's seriously dialed in. I marveled when she described how growing up on Long Island, she watched potato fields transform into vineyards. The region's rise in agro-tourism stuck with me—how people from the city pour into the North Fork and don't think twice about whether the wines are international gold medalists. "It brings excitement," she told me 06:14, "it gets people interested." Sometimes, wine is about adventure—stomping out to a farmstand, finding a bright Merlot, or realizing, incredulously, that some Long Island wineries still only ship within New York 03:46. One thing I picked up fast: Karen Laz is obsessed with the guest experience. She's made it her mission to create truly tailored wine tastings—her team asks questions, customizes lineups, brings in wines that excite her personally, not just what's expected. She has that gift for bringing nervous new tasters right into the fold, making them feel like collectors before they've even bought a bottle 09:01. As someone who's spent decades trying to match people with the right glass, I recognize how rare that skill is. Of course, we dove deep into wine business nitty-gritty as only two veterans can: the hotel rates in Napa these days, how the pandemic shifted staff and guest expectations, and the ever-higher bar for making the DTC wine game work. We commiserated about the "innovation" that nobody wants—wine in pouches, anyone?—and agreed that the future of our trade lies in experience, not just packaging 25:03. But the heart of our conversation came when Karen Laz opened up about her philanthropic work—her mother's Alzheimer's journey and the creation of Inspire Napa Valley 42:57. Her passion for making a difference was palpable. She's raised over $9 million, funneling funds directly into research and care, not just awareness. This is what happens when someone, out of necessity and love, channels their professional success into something bigger than profit. In the end, it all circles back—relationships, authenticity, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves for guests, friends, and causes that matter. That's what the wine business should be, and Karen Laz is living proof. Sitting with her, I was reminded that sometimes the best bottles are poured at a table where the stories matter as much as the juice in the glass.   https://youtu.be/c8cKLJSU2M8

This was recorded on a peaceful night in early spring atop a rocky outcrop which jutted out into the North Fork of the Salmon River just downstream of Mule Bridge in Klamath National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. The night was clear and unseasonably warm for the time of year. The recording runs from about nine at night till about seven in the morning.Though this was recorded two weeks before the official spring equinox I feel comfortable calling it a spring night after the exceptionally mild and short winter in Northern California. Not to mention that as I lay in my tent at dawn while this was recording, I was greeted by the song of an American Robin, a sure sign of spring. I really want to thank everyone that has taken the time to rate and review the podcast, I deeply appreciate your kind words. And I'd like to thank those of you that have commented on the episodes in Spotify, I very much enjoy hearing your thoughts on the recordings. And I especially want to thank the few of you that have donated to the podcast on my, frankly, pitiful and outdated website. It really, really needs to be updated. I haven't touched in at least a couple of years, and it was built a minimum of effort to begin with. I guess I'd rather spend the little free time I have in the field making recordings, not sitting in front of a computer trying to build a website. So it goes.
