Have you ever had a "stupid, hare-brained idea" that worked so well it took over your life for a decade? That's exactly what happened to James Byrd when he looked at the North Fork of the Payette River in Idaho, thought about his college football stadium experience, and decided the best kayakers in the world should be racing it in front of a crowd. What started as a passion project became one of the premier whitewater extreme races on the planet, the North Fork Championship, and now, after a few years away, James and his wife Regan are bringing it back. James is also a registered nurse, a lifelong paddler, and one of the most genuinely stoked people I know. This conversation went a lot of places I didn't expect, and I think you'll appreciate it. In this episode: The visualization practice James uses before stepping up to something big and scary on the water, and why he won't send it until he genuinely feels ready What it was like to get pushback when he first launched the event, and the one moment that changed everything Why he thinks kayaking athletes deserve to be known, not just watched, and what he's doing about it The real talk on money, sustainability, and what he and Regan discovered when they did the math on their nursing wages versus the hours they put into North Fork How going nonprofit is changing what's possible for the event's future If you've ever poured everything into something you believed in, hit friction, and wondered whether it was worth it, this one's for you.

Wine Talks with Paul Kalemkiarian

Relentless in her pursuits would be an understatement because Kerrin Laz is a force of nature.  Kerrin is the type of person the wine trade needs...now. She is chock full of energy, a plethora of ideas, and a cavalcade of pathways to get there. She will be on the show again; there were too many subjects we never discussed. Sitting down with Kerrin Laz was like flipping open a well-loved journal and discovering a handful of stories you'd forgotten you needed to hear. There's a warmth to the East Coast energy she carries with her, this tenacity blended with familiarity—sort of like sipping an old-vine Zinfandel that carries the sun of California but has the grit of Long Island soil. Right out of the gate, Karen Laz reminded me of those early, stumbling steps we all take in our careers. She grew up in New York, knew Dean & DeLuca as an iconic place—couldn't resist popping in for a cup of coffee, even though her resume, as she freely admits, "had, like, nothing on it" 00:06. When asked if she preferred food or wine, she just sort of shrugged and said, "Wine, I guess." That honest uncertainty? I find that refreshing. Most people will fabricate a grand narrative about their calling, but Karen Laz is humble enough to admit a little serendipity goes a long way. But don't let that humility fool you. Ten years leading her own wine collection, a knack for knowing what guests want before they do, and the rare ability to forge real partnerships with wineries—she's seriously dialed in. I marveled when she described how growing up on Long Island, she watched potato fields transform into vineyards. The region's rise in agro-tourism stuck with me—how people from the city pour into the North Fork and don't think twice about whether the wines are international gold medalists. "It brings excitement," she told me 06:14, "it gets people interested." Sometimes, wine is about adventure—stomping out to a farmstand, finding a bright Merlot, or realizing, incredulously, that some Long Island wineries still only ship within New York 03:46. One thing I picked up fast: Karen Laz is obsessed with the guest experience. She's made it her mission to create truly tailored wine tastings—her team asks questions, customizes lineups, brings in wines that excite her personally, not just what's expected. She has that gift for bringing nervous new tasters right into the fold, making them feel like collectors before they've even bought a bottle 09:01. As someone who's spent decades trying to match people with the right glass, I recognize how rare that skill is. Of course, we dove deep into wine business nitty-gritty as only two veterans can: the hotel rates in Napa these days, how the pandemic shifted staff and guest expectations, and the ever-higher bar for making the DTC wine game work. We commiserated about the "innovation" that nobody wants—wine in pouches, anyone?—and agreed that the future of our trade lies in experience, not just packaging 25:03. But the heart of our conversation came when Karen Laz opened up about her philanthropic work—her mother's Alzheimer's journey and the creation of Inspire Napa Valley 42:57. Her passion for making a difference was palpable. She's raised over $9 million, funneling funds directly into research and care, not just awareness. This is what happens when someone, out of necessity and love, channels their professional success into something bigger than profit. In the end, it all circles back—relationships, authenticity, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves for guests, friends, and causes that matter. That's what the wine business should be, and Karen Laz is living proof. Sitting with her, I was reminded that sometimes the best bottles are poured at a table where the stories matter as much as the juice in the glass.   https://youtu.be/c8cKLJSU2M8

This was recorded on a peaceful night in early spring atop a rocky outcrop which jutted out into the North Fork of the Salmon River just downstream of Mule Bridge in Klamath National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. The night was clear and unseasonably warm for the time of year. The recording runs from about nine at night till about seven in the morning.Though this was recorded two weeks before the official spring equinox I feel comfortable calling it a spring night after the exceptionally mild and short winter in Northern California. Not to mention that as I lay in my tent at dawn while this was recording, I was greeted by the song of an American Robin, a sure sign of spring. I really want to thank everyone that has taken the time to rate and review the podcast, I deeply appreciate your kind words. And I'd like to thank those of you that have commented on the episodes in Spotify, I very much enjoy hearing your thoughts on the recordings. And I especially want to thank the few of you that have donated to the podcast on my, frankly, pitiful and outdated website. It really, really needs to be updated. I haven't touched in at least a couple of years, and it was built a minimum of effort to begin with. I guess I'd rather spend the little free time I have in the field making recordings, not sitting in front of a computer trying to build a website. So it goes.

Last year, Crescent Duck Farm on the North Fork was hit by a devastating outbreak of avian influenza and had to cull its entire flock of Pekin ducks. The farm is now rebuilding its stock. But the latest strain of the disease, known as H5N1, is back. It's now raging through its fourth winter season and is proving deadly to a broad swath of wild birds. This year, it's wild waterfowl — especially Canada geese — that are catching bird flu in large numbers, sparking fears that the disease could decimate bald eagles and other birds of prey that feed on dead waterfowl. Recently, East Hampton Town oversaw the cleanup of 675 dead geese and ducks that were thought to have succumbed to the flu in and around Georgica Pond. This week, the editors are joined by senior reporter Michael Wright and Kathleen Mulcahy, director of the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays, and Kevin Hynes, director of wildlife health for New York State DEC, to talk about the situation.

The 15th annual Bay Area American Indian Two Spirit Powwow is happening this Valentine's Day. Buffalo's Fire reports that organizers hope that the event goes fine, with participants and volunteers feeling safe and supported as the rawhide drum ushers in the Grand Entry. Tzapotl Flores (Salvi-Mexi Xicana) is a co-chair for the BAAITS powwow. She says, this year, the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is creating concerns. “We are developing very specific ICE protocols internally. We hear these forms of propaganda where Two Spirit people are ‘terrorists.' All of these different attacks on our community, but it's still going to happen. Because it is a tantamount important event that people need.” Another co-chair, Kat Warren, says the Trump administration has made things challenging for Two Spirits and the Native LGTBQ+ community. The president has rolled out executive orders that bans gender affirming care for youth, and defines gender as only male or female, determined at conception. “Y'know a lot of our folks are very concerned about the folks that are going to attend this powwow because we do bring in a lot of folks, and we want to make sure everyone is taken care and able to experience the medicine of the powwow. We see the struggles and we see the ongoing pressure of this administration and we are trying our best to be above it.” BAAITS is regarded as the largest Two Spirit powwow in North America, with non-gender contest dancing and flags representing Native LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit people. The North Fork of the Yellow River on July 17, 2025. (Photo: Danielle Kaeding / WPR) States and tribes would have less power to protect waterways under the Clean Water Act when reviewing energy and infrastructure projects. As Danielle Kaeding reports, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would limit their authority under a new rule. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the changes would protect water quality while ending “weaponization of the law” that has delayed or blocked projects. States and authorized tribes can review the effects of dams, bridges, and pipelines on wetlands and waterways under the Clean Water Act. The proposal would narrow water quality impacts they could consider. Nancy Stoner is an attorney with the Environmental Law and Policy Center. She says the rule would also remove a process that allows tribes to weigh in on federally regulated projects even if they haven't adopted their own programs to set water quality standards. “It puts a huge hurdle in front of tribes that they have to actually adopt a whole water quality standards program in order to look at a federally permitted activity, and what are the impacts on the waters, on the tribal waters.” Only about 15% of federally recognized tribes have received approval from the EPA to adopt their own programs for water quality standards. Franka Potente as Irene Vaggan in “Dark Winds” Season 4, Episode 3. (Photo: Michael Moriatis / AMC) This weekend sees the return of the AMC series “Dark Winds”. The award-winning detective series takes place in 1970s Navajo Country. Zahn McClarnon plays tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, who finds himself stalked by a mysterious woman who carves a path of destruction across the reservation. Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn in “Dark Winds” Season 4, Episode 3. (Photo: Michael Moriatis / AMC) Franka Potente plays Irene Vaggan. She and McClarnon discuss their dynamic upon their first physical meeting in the season. “He's very vulnerable with no clothes on, half naked, but (Frank laughs) also vulnerable in his life and what he's going through psychologically and emotionally, with the possibility of losing his wife and searching for what the Diné people call ‘hozho’ y'know, the balance and stability in his life. And he's in search of that very much when he meets Irene for the first time. “I'm not connected to the earth anymore so she's very impressed and very enamored with what she's seeing, and she just wants to devour that.” “Dark Winds” premieres Sunday night on AMC.
