On today's episode of Architectette we welcome Chrissie Davis.  Chrissie is a general contractor and founder of San Jose based, Incorage. She partners with developers, subcontractors, and the larger development community to build multi-family and mixed-use housing across the Bay Area. In this episode, we also explore her previous role as President of CORE Builders, where she led the company to triple its business, making it the 25th largest general contractor in Silicon Valley and the “best residential contractor to work for with under 50 employees” in 2023. As President, Chrissie was proud of cultivating a diverse team, comprised of 50% women and 75% people of color, and aims to create a similar environment of success and inclusion as she expands Incorage. We talk about: - Chrissie's career as a general contractor and how she grew from Assistant Project Manager to President. - Chrissie elaborates on her strategies for growth including system implementation, market expansion, and business development that helped CORE Builders grow from $30 million to $100 million in revenue. - We next talk about how the lack of diversity and representation of women leadership of general contracting firms in the Bay Area influenced her to start her own company.  - We hear about Chrissie's passion for affordable housing, landing Incorage's first project, managing her routine and workload as a solopreneur, and the power of gratitude, journaling, and Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In.  Links: Connect with Chrissie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrissie-davis-general-contractor/ Books mentioned on the podcast: Architectette Bookshop Architectette Podcast Website: www.architectette.com Connect with the pod on LinkedIn, Instagram (@architectette), and TikTok (@architectette) Exclusive Content on our Newsletter: www.architectette.com Support the podcast on Patreon: https://patreon.com/Architectette?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link Music by AlexGrohl from Pixabay.

After watching other investors become successful, it was an easy transition into buying real estate and flipping houses on his own. His portfolio Include several fix & flips and rental properties along the way. This led to starting a General Contracting company and building spec homes for investors and homeowners to purchase or lease. In 2009, Tag turned his attention to gaining more knowledge in his field. He obtained anAssociate's degree in Architecture and a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management. He was ranked in the top three of his class at graduation while also obtaining a personal recommendation from the program chair.Having gained knowledge and experience in his field he decided that it was best to give back to the industry. He did this several ways, but initially he served as a board member for the North Dallas Collin County Division Board (NDCC) for the Dallas Builders Association (DBA). He served for 2 years on the board from 2014 to 2016. Being involved in a membership organization like the DBA allowed him the benefits of taking advantage of their education opportunities. As he attended more classes, therewas a window of opportunity to gain professional designations within the industry. At this time, he has eleven (12) designations recognized by the NAHB, and two (2) designations that are local to the DBA. These include Certified Graduate Builder (CGB), Graduate Master Builder (GMB), Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR), Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR), Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Green Professional (CGP), Master Certified Green Professional (MCGP), Certified Graduate Associate (CGA), Certified New Home Sales Professional (CSP), Master Certified New Home Sales Professional (MCSP), Certified New Home Marketing Professional (CMP),Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM), Green Sales Professional (GSP), Tag utilizes these designations on his website, business cards, and on LinkedIn to set himself apart from the competition.Tag currently owns a Design/Build firm called Tag & Associates, LLC where he works with homeowners, remodelers, and builders drawing full construction plans in 3D. With the industry growing toward new technology, Virtual Reality was an extremely easy add on to services to offer to the more distinguished clientele. What VR has done is begun to eliminate the need for field changes and allows for a design that everyone is happy with but has also maintained budget constraints and maximized livability.

Sometimes the right thing for them is a long term play that only you can see visualy so you'll get hate and criticism for it. You must draw a fine line where you don't give a fuck what people think about what you do, that's if you truly belive in your mission.  The game is difficult on it's own but adding to it other people's opinion of what you're trying to do makes it much more difficult. Most of the closest people to you with talk shit to you or try to unmotivate you to start and build this business that you have a vision for. A little throwback to one of my favorite episodes of Construction Royalty. It's one of my favorite because personal development is something that overlooked and that rarely anyone takes serious. It's also the most important part of the trades. Enjoy!   Personal Development in the trades is one of the most underrated things in the industry. 95% of the peoplein the construction industry don't focus on this and we believe it's a huge issue that needs to be addressed. The reason we believe this is because working inside of the construction industry is one of the toughest and most difficult jobs you can have that will drain your body physically over time. If you don't take of your mental and physical health, then the job will become more difficult over time. I grew up in the indutry since I was 10 years old and I've seen this play out in the long run for many people and it isn't pretty. Personal devolopment includes: reading books, daily stretching, lifting weights, meditation, journaling, drinking plenty of water daily, limiting alcohol and smoking and whatever else you think will help you not just out in the field but in life in general. So tune into to hear about Joe as an apprentice and the journey to the beard we all know and love. Then, we take a stab at the impact of Instagram influencing on the industry as a whole. At the end of the day, Joe wants to make the framing process easier for anyone willing to listen and learn. He's been reviewing tools long before Instagram was a thing and points out some flaws in that sort of promotion. Is he teaching the kids if its cool to be in the trades or that its cool to be an influencer. We don't dwell on the labor deficit but take a look the reasons why it seems like “everyone is soft”. We were raised to be tough but that has lead to a generation of parents that don't challenge their kids.  Joe is not afraid to talk about his ADHD. It's not a block. Jazmine Mendoza joined Retiz Electric in June 2022 when she recently moved to Austin, Tx from Virginia. Not knowing anybody in Austin but hungry to learn and advance in the industry, she showed what she brought to the table and her willingness to learn and work hard in the field.  Being a female in the trades is becoming more common as the years go by and she plans to inspire more women to get into the trades as it's a very rewarding career if you work hard.  We dive into a lot of things in this episode from the bullshit going on in this country, to construction, to personal development, to the hobby of collecting cigars for the podcast studio. You'll hear more of her on this show as she will be a regualar on here!
