Listen to the latest sermon from Village Church Rolesville--a United Methodist Faith Community.
Main Idea: On the way back from Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph can't find Jesus because he's hanging out at the temple soaking up every word. He's listening with wide eyes no doubt. Later in his ministry we know that he depends on both his knowledge of scripture and his relationship with his father in heaven. Perhaps we need to recover the story seeking of children who always love to listen to stories. God's story is the overarching story of our lives. Scriptures: Luke 2:41-52
May 25 - Boy with Loaves (ok with ordinary) Main Idea: When a crowd was hungry and the disciples were looking for food, a small boy offers up his lunch to share. Jesus blesses it and a miracle ensues. We would do well to have a childlike faith that's willing to share. Piano Story p.165Scriptures: John 6:1-14

Main Idea: Samuel is a young boy in a time of Israel's history when God seemed very distant. When Samuel feels like God is calling him, he has the curiosity and willingness to ask for help from someone else (Eli). He ends up hearing from God and being called to be a prophet. We can learn about having a posture of curiosity, wonder and asking for help in understanding God. Who knows? We might just hear God speak. SOmretimers their curiosity makes us squirm. God questions they ask like Who made God? Why are there bad people? Curiously Kaitlyn podcast. God is faithful but God is slow.Scriptures: 1 Samuel 3

March 30 - Christian Conferencing/CommunityMain Idea: We sin alone but we heal together or as AA says, I got drunk, we stay sober. We need travel companions along the way to hold us accountable in love and encourage us. To tell us both our blind spots and name our gifts and belovedness. Christian Community and Conferencing is like rubbing the rough edges off of us making us smooth. This would be the power in small groups where we check in with each other and see how it is with our souls. What is bringing us life and what we're struggling with, etc. We also teach one another in beautiful ways. Community is meant to be the show and tell of what true belonging and love looks like. Also the NT is full of “one anothers”Scriptures: Mark 3:13-19; Acts 2:42-47; Colossians 3:12-17

March 16 - Meditating and Studying the ScripturesMain Idea: The scriptures are God's word communicated to us. It's a primary way that God reveals God's self to us. When we read, meditate on and study the scriptures, we learn more about the character of God, we ourselves are read and formed into more Christ-like people. This is about both relishing what we read and explicating it. Scripture is a primary way we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. As we read what God reveals about who God is, we begin to have a more Christ-formed imagination. Let the BIble break us open in all the right ways. Scriptures: Psalm 19: 2 Timothy 3:16-17

February 16 - Digital AppetiteMain Idea: In the first temptation, Jesus is tempted to turn stones into bread. He's “click baited.” He's hungry and this temptation speaks to the appetite we all have for things that quickly satisfy our impulses. Technology is designed to make us into captive consumers enslaved to being able to get what we want as soon as we want it. It tempts us to leapfrog God and our dependence upon God. Jesus says he lives on his Father's word. We have to remember that technology cannot meet our profound needs. We resist this by finding fulfillment and contentment in God's provision and our identity in Christ. Trusting that God is our ultimate need fulfiller.Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11; John 6:35 (I Am Bread of Life)

Village Church Rolesville Sunday Message, December 15, 2024 Pastor Tyler Williams Luke 3:1-16 Main Idea: John the Baptist's good news sounds harsh, but he preaches a home for all—where inequities are banished, valleys are lifted up, and all have the resources they need for collective flourishing. Ultimately, John's message is one of joy. We are called to collectively build and repair the structures of our society; we are called to be kin-dom builders. Wherever we build, God is there. What we build should be a place with a large table and room for all. N.T. Wright talks about what we build that is oriented toward the Kingdom of God will last. Part of what makes home a place of joy is the people we associate being there. And, as followers of Jesus we should always be paying attention to who it is that's not in the living room or around the table and ask how can we bring them?

Village Church Rolesville Sunday Message, October 13, 2024 Tyler Williams Matthew 25:31-40 & Philippians 2:3-8 Main Idea: St. Francis shows us a generous serving spirit in the way of Jesus. His generosity was informed by a generous receiving of Christ in those he served. When he served, he thought he was serving Jesus.

Village Church Rolesville Sunday Worship, September 22, 2024 Speaker: Tyler Willams Scripture: John 11:25 (I am the resurrection and the life) ; Ruth 1:1-18 (the power of and importance of presence, allowing people to journey with you in grief) Main Idea: When we are in the midst of grief from losing a loved one, Jesus reminds us of the hope that we have in him as well as the power of allowing others to simply be with us in the journey death forces upon us.
Village Church Rolesville Sunday Message,September 15th, 2024 Tyler Williams Scripture: Jacob and Esau (Genesis 32:1-9; 33:1-17) Main Idea: Like Jacob and Esau, we often experience the pain and difficulty of a broken relationship with a friend, partner or family member. It's stressful and hard and yet God calls us to lean into reconciliation with humility and help from God and others.
Village Church Rolesville Sunday Message, September 8, 2024 Tyler Williams 1 Kings 19:1-18 Main Idea: Mental illness is often stigmatized by the church. The truth is, depression or other forms of mental illness are not signs that someone's faith is weak. When we are struggling with any form of mental illness, we can remember we are not alone like God reminds Elijah. God is present in the midst of his depression and also shows him he's not alone. We can seek out God's help and the help of those God has gifted and empowered to help us (medical professionals)
Village Church Rolesville Sunday Message, September 1st Main Idea: When Paul meets the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus he was operating with a worldview that was about rigorous rule keeping and protecting the Jewish faith at all costs. After his encounter with Jesus, he operates from a new paradigm, one that centers on treasuring and serving Jesus. Encountering Jesus changes how we think and frame reality. Scripture: Acts 9:1-21

August 4 - Matthew - Change of Allegiance Main Idea: Matthew has an allegiance to Rome. He's a tax collector. Whether it's out of convenience or something else, his life shows where his loyalty lies even at the expense of his own Jewish people. When he encounters Jesus, he has a fundamental change of allegiance from Rome and collecting taxes to Jesus and working for God's kingdom. Encountering Jesus changes our allegiance. Scripture: Matthew 9:9-13 or Mark 2:13-17 EnCounter Culture - How Meeting Jesus makes us live differently Series Summary: When people encounter Jesus in the gospels, their life changes. Sometimes it's sudden; other times more gradual. They begin to live differently because of running into Jesus. The Christian life is about both our encountering Jesus and our living counter-culturally as a result! How has bumping into Jesus changed you? Made you live differently?
