Soccer is the world's most popular sport, yet its origins are shrouded in chaos, and its modern “analytics” are often flawed. ⚽ HOW TO WATCH SOCCER LIKE A GENIUS (Abrams Press, May 12, 2026) by Nick Greene https://amzn.to/4eVb8ve ⚽ Author Nick Greene joins The Brian D. O'Leary Show to dismantle everything you thought you knew about “the beautiful game”. Using insights from architects, stuntwomen, paleoanthropologists, and computer scientists, we tear into the history of soccer's bizarre early rules and expose why American youth player development is fundamentally broken. Timed with the World Cup coming to North America, this conversation uncovers soccer's shared roots with American football and rugby, revealing a time when the sport featured fair catches and touchdowns. We dig into how the introduction of the FA Cup forced a standard set of rules, and contrast Scotland's early tactical advantage through passing with England's aristocratic refusal to share the ball. We also explore a disastrous 1940s analytics study that set English tactics back decades, the space-warping genius of Lionel Messi, and the absurd limits of modern optimization. Finally, we celebrate, but Greene critiques, the American youth soccer focus on the “battering ram” approach over actual technique. Conversation Highlights (Chapters) The World Cup and Unlikely Soccer Experts The Shared DNA of Soccer, Rugby, and American Football Freemasons, Fair Catches, and the FA Cup Scotland's Passing vs. England's Selfishness The RAF Pilot Who Ruined English Tactics Why the Best Team Doesn't Always Win Lionel Messi's Space-Warping Genius Tottenham's Showers and the Limits of Analytics Could Shaq Have Revolutionized Soccer? Key Takeaways Shared Roots: Soccer, rugby, and American football share the same origins. Early soccer even featured fair catches and touchdowns. The Forward Pass: Scotland dominated early international soccer by embracing a passing game, while wealthy English players selfishly refused to pass the ball. Bad Math: A flawed 1940s study by a retired RAF pilot convinced English soccer that passing was useless, leading to a long era of “caveman long ball tactics”. Mastering Space: Lionel Messi changes the gravity of the field, often accomplishing more by walking through space than other players do by sprinting. The Battering Ram: American youth soccer prioritizes winning through sheer size, whereas elite global academies focus entirely on technique. Tweetable Quotes “The fact that the best team doesn't always win is… the most to me, natural human thing about soccer.” - Nick Greene “People who don't watch or aren't interested in sports are missing out because it's such a Rosetta Stone.” - Nick Greene “They're learning how to be battering rams and kick the ball to the battering ram.” - Nick Greene Resources Mentioned HOW TO WATCH SOCCER LIKE A GENIUS (Abrams Press, May 12, 2026) by Nick Greene: https://amzn.to/4eVb8ve Hoosiers (1986): https://amzn.to/43hOfuS (Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.) Most entrepreneurs are experts at their craft but "accidental" managers of their money. Whether you are scaling a startup or eyeing the retirement finish line, there is a common gap between having a successful business and having a secure future. Often, highly successful people feel a sense of embarrassment because, despite their high earnings, they lack clarity on their "bad math"—the gap between what they have and what they actually need to survive a 30-year "vacation."In this episode, R. Kenner French sits down with Laura Rehbein, the "Queen of Planning" and founder of Impavid Wealth Advisors. With over 30 years of experience, Laura breaks down why planning isn't just about spreadsheets—it's about managing the emotions, health costs, and family dynamics that dictate your financial freedom. She discusses the transition from "wearing all the hats" to focusing on unique abilities, and how to ensure your business provides for your lifestyle rather than just consuming it.What You'll Learn• The "Bad Math" Trap: Why many 55-year-olds are closer to a financial crisis than they realize and how to bridge the gap.• Money is Emotional: How to separate your hopes, fears, and dreams from the cold, hard numbers to make better decisions.• Measuring Your Money: A simple framework for auditing if your dollars are doing the specific "jobs" they were assigned.• Succession Pitfalls: Why "giving the business to little Jimmy" might be a recipe for disaster if you haven't planned for professional transition.• The "Long Vacation" Mindset: Treating retirement as a multi-decade trip that requires a specific, inflation-adjusted budget for health and leisure.Who This Episode Is ForThis episode is a must-listen for small business owners who are driving revenue but lack a personal exit strategy. It is also designed for pre-retirees (ages 50–65) who feel a sense of "fearless finance" is missing from their current wealth management strategy and want to gain clarity without the jargon.Ready to stop feeling overwhelmed and start feeling empowered? A little bit of everything after Super Bowl 60. The crew dives into why policing fandom is ridiculous, how Mike Tirico managed to misread allegiances and irritate half the audience, and the moment the game turned after a shirtless fan sprinted onto the field. Then it gets tactical as Mike Vrabel's late-game decision making comes under the microscope, especially the two-point math that made no sense. Add in a Mack Hollins appreciation segment, gambling talk without the gambling, Drake Maye seeing ghosts, and a larger debate about whether quarterbacks actually decided this Super Bowl at all. A packed segment mixing sports logic, fan culture, and classic Monday morning frustration.
This episode opens with the crew's trademark humor, launching Season 7 with casual banter about production life, winter weather, and behind-the-scenes filming. The relaxed tone quickly transitions into sponsor reads and community engagement before moving into the night's core purpose: breaking down the Orion Arc launch. The first major pivot occurs with live breaking news regarding Patch 87.1 maintenance, setting the stage for technical concerns that dominate much of the show. From there, the hosts outline the arc's key systems — Orion hostiles, the Challenge Track, and event structure — before shifting sharply into widespread player-reported lag. A significant portion of the episode dissects performance failures affecting scoring, notifications, and client responsiveness. The crew explores possible technical causes, including push communication breakdowns between client and server systems, and debates whether backend optimization work may have triggered the instability. Mid-show, the conversation briefly detours into Star Trek lore — notably Avery Brooks and Deep Space Nine character storytelling — before returning to gameplay analysis. This tonal shift gives listeners a mix of franchise discussion alongside live-service game critique. The back half focuses heavily on Orion hostile scaling, progression difficulty, and how different ops brackets are handling the new content. Strategy discussions expand into Challenge Track design, compensation expectations, and server region disparities in performance impact. In the final stretch, attention turns to late-game systems like Sweeps mechanics and long-term efficiency optimization. The hosts close by evaluating the arc's design potential versus its troubled technical launch, leaving the audience with cautious optimism once stability issues are resolved. 00:58 – Cold open, show intro, Season 7 welcome 04:00 – Shop day stories, filming, and snowstorm chaos 09:30 – Sponsor segment + Ghost Energy discussion 15:00 – AI assistants, automation humor, and chat banter 20:26 – Breaking news: Patch 87.1 maintenance announced 25:30 – Early arc reactions + system rollout impressions 29:30 – Global lag begins — first major complaints 33:00 – Client/server communication failures explained 38:00 – Recurring bugs vs new bugs discussion 01:00:00 – Star Trek discussion tangent (Avery Brooks / DS9 context 01:30:07 – Orion hostiles deep dive begins 01:45:00 – Difficulty scaling + G6–G7 balancing talk 02:00:00 – Challenge Track progression pacing 02:18:00 – Compensation expectations + fairness debate 02:35:00 – Server region performance comparisons 02:50:00 – Long-term arc systems + economy impact 03:06:00 – Sweeps mechanic strategy + late-game optimization 03:15:30 – Challenge Track mastery + efficiency meta 03:22:00 – Final thoughts + show close

Health care strategist Dana Y. Lujan discusses her article "Why direct primary care (DPC) models fail." Dana argues that the DPC community's obsession with "purity" is missing the point, stating that these models don't fail over ideology, they fail because of bad math. She uses the University of Houston's $1 million clinic failure as a prime example of a "fundamental market mismatch," where a DPC model was placed in a low-income area that couldn't sustain its membership fees (a ~70 percent revenue deficit). Dana also debunks the myth that institutions can't run successful DPC programs, citing CHI Health and Johns Hopkins as proof that financial sustainability and market fit are the true keys. This episode explores the critical difference between what's legally permissible and what's operationally sustainable, and why the DPC conversation must shift from philosophy to execution. Episode Summary:Laura Rehbein shares her journey from becoming head of household at age 12 in rural Michigan to building a successful financial advisory practice over nearly three decades. Her book "Fearless Finance" addresses the anxiety that highly educated, successful professionals feel about their finances despite their achievements. Laura reveals why knowledge replaces fear and how proper planning can help clients "face everything and rise" rather than "forget everything and run." She discusses practical strategies like productive pessimism, the bucket approach to retirement income, and often-overlooked risks that can derail investment plans.About the Guest:Laura Rehbein owns Impavid Wealth and has spent nearly 30 years in financial advising. Growing up in rural Michigan farming country, she became responsible for her household at age 12. She entered the financial industry after recognizing a need for more women advisors.Key Concepts Explained:Fearless vs. Reckless: Laura defines fearless as making informed decisions with knowledge and clarity, not reckless choices. Her approach focuses on empowering clients with understanding rather than eliminating all fear."Throw It in a Pile" Strategy: Laura encourages overwhelmed clients to gather all financial documents without organizing them perfectly. She compares this to hiring a personal stylist who sorts through your closet - sometimes you need an objective professional.Productive Pessimism: This planning approach involves overestimating expenses, underestimating investment returns, and planning for longer lifespans. Rather than being negative, it creates a buffer that helps ensure money lasts throughout retirement."Bad Math": Laura's term for overly optimistic financial thinking, like believing you can retire by cutting out Starbucks or that a $100,000 inheritance solves all retirement needs. It occurs when people avoid doing real calculations.Bucket Strategy: Laura structures retirement assets in three buckets: 12-24 months of expenses in cash, 3-6 years in medium-risk investments, and the remainder in growth investments. This provides short-term security while maintaining long-term growth potential.Overlooked Financial Risks:Sequence of Returns Risk: Two identical retirees can have vastly different outcomes depending on whether they retire at the beginning of a bull or bear market. Early losses can devastate portfolios even if long-term returns average out.Healthcare and Long-Term Care: Laura shares stories of clients facing unexpected healthcare costs that required rapid plan adjustments, emphasizing the importance of addressing these risks proactively.Modern Estate Planning Considerations:Digital Assets: Beyond cryptocurrency and online accounts, this includes cloud-stored photos, social media profiles, and email accounts. Some platforms delete accounts upon notification of death, potentially losing family memories.Pet Trusts: Laura emphasizes that verbal promises to care for pets often fail due to changing circumstances. Pet trusts provide funding and assign responsibility for animal care, preventing beloved pets from ending up in shelters.Practical Takeaways:Laura emphasizes that financial planning requires ongoing adjustments as life changes. Whether facing health crises, remarriage, or unexpected events, having a trusted advisor helps navigate transitions while keeping long-term goals on track.Connect with Laura:Email: impavidwealthadvisors@ampf.com | Book: "Fearless Finance"Support the show

Verity “Very” Nelson can do it all. She's student body president, debate club whiz, and first chair clarinetist and can do the most push-ups in one minute in gym class. You could say she's pretty much the best at everything…Well, almost everything. Everything except math. And it's not like she doesn't try. Math just doesn't make sense in her brain. But it better start soon, or else she can kiss her presidency—and her campaign promises—goodbye. Soon Verity finds herself enrolled in a remedial math class where, despite her best efforts, failure persists. All seems lost until a teacher helps her discover the truth. Verity discovers that her struggles with math go beyond misunderstanding—she has dyscalculia, a learning disability that makes it hard for her brain to understand number-based information and math. Her eventual diagnosis helps her come to a better understanding of herself, and it mirrors author Hope Larson's own struggles with dyscalculia. As the story progresses, Verity must learn that appearances aren't everything, especially when it comes to seeming like she has it all together. Armed with a new perspective, can Verity pass math, keep her presidency, and make good on her word to the student body she loves so much? It's clear that we need to fix the way we measure the value of new medicines. Current methods fail to account for the benefits to caregivers, the long-term savings from keeping a job or avoiding the hospital, and the countless scientific discoveries that a new drug can lead to. But there is a solution according to this week's guest, biotech investor Peter Kolchinsky. He talks about his new study that looks at innovative ways to assess the real value of medicine. Peter explains how insurers use cost-effective math to determine what drugs they will and won't cover, and alternative methods that take into account patient and caregiver needs.
