Welcome to the 8th episode of the One in Four podcast, which stands for, “One in Four adult Americans has a criminal record.” This is a show that seeks to Humanize, Educate, and Elevate conversations about the re-entry process of people who have experienced incarceration. In this episode, we will focus on the topic of housing and reentry. Having a safe place to live, in addition to finding stable employment, is often one of the greatest challenges that people face when they come out of prison. For starters, there are few affordable housing options available in many urban areas – the Washington D.C. greater metro area included. There is also the added issue of stigma, specifically the fear that everyone who has a felony record is dangerous and cannot be trusted. This means that many neighborhoods are off limits to any type of housing arrangement that would allow people coming out of prison to live there and rebuild their lives.A report by the Prison Policy Initiative published in 2018, states that people who have been incarcerated are almost 10 times more likely to become homeless than the general population. This number is much higher for women of color who face unique barriers to housing and other social resources necessary to succeed after incarceration. The report also states that people who have been incarcerated multiple times are twice as likely to be homeless as those who are returning from their first prison term.In this episode, my co-host Bea Spadacini will be speaking with Alicia Horton, Executive Director of Thrive D.C., a local non-profit thatworks to end homelessness in the nation’s capital. Bea will also be speaking to Kari Galloway, the Executive Director of Friends of Guest House, a Northern Virginia organization that provides transitional housing and other support services for women who reenter society after incarceration. You will also hear from two women who went through this particular program. To find out a few additional facts about housing for Returning Citizens check out our sidecast to this episode. This episode is dedicated to Heidi Christiansen, a former Friends of Guest House resident, who gifted us with her personal story over the summer, prior to passing away. Her death, like that of another young man we interviewed earlier this season, is a stark reminder of the many challenges people face when they come out of prison. Please listen, subscribe, and rate/review our Podcast in iTunes (if you open it up on Apple Podcasts, go to the Itunes page to leave us a review), Spotify, and on Google Play.Send tips, comments and questions to: podcastoneinfour@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter: @oneinfourpodca1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneinfourpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oneinfourpodcastHosts: Bea M. In this episode we stay focused on the topic of employment but look at the specific challenges that women face when they come out of prison or jail, which can make landing a job even harder. Over the last 25 years, the number of incarcerated women has increased by more than 700%. Though many more men are in prison than women, the rate of growth for female imprisonment has been twice as high as that of men since 1980. This is primarily the result of stiffer drug sentencing laws and post-conviction barriers to reentry that uniquely affect women.According to the Sentencing Project, more than 60% of women in state prisons have a child under the age of 18. There is also a large number of women, who are mothers, that are locked up in local jails awaiting trial. One of the primary concerns incarcerated mothers have when they complete their sentence is how to reestablish a healthy relationship with their children. In this episode, we will introduce you to Together We Bake (TWB), a small non-profit organization in Alexandria, VA that offers workforce development and personal training for women in need of a second chance. You will also meet Kadija Clifton, a graduate of TWB and hear a bit of her story when she was an expectant Mom in jail. You can order Together We Bake granola and delicious cookies to be delivered anywhere in the U.S. from here. Finding employment and getting hired is one of the many barriers that formerly incarcerated individuals face when they return to their communities. This is why offering training programs inside jails or prisons is fundamental to preparing inmates for coming home and being productive citizens. According to a July 2018 report by the Prison Policy Initiative entitled Out of Prison, Out of Work, formerly incarcerated people are unemployed at a rate of over 27% - approximately five times higher than the national average. In this episode, you will meet Coach Rojas who is a trainer at the American Jobs Center in the Montgomery County Correctional facility in Boyds, Maryland. She works in the pre-release center inside the jail and trains inmates on life and job-readiness skills. You will also meet Lynda who went through this program a few years ago and is slowly getting back on her feet, pursuing her dreams, working and giving back to her community. This trailer is an introduction to the One in Four Podcast, a conversation series of 10 episodes on the reentry process of the formerly incarcerated in the Washington D.C. metro area, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. One in Four stands for, "one in four adult Americans has a criminal record," which means that the chances of knowing someone who has spent time in prison or jail are pretty high. The goal of this podcast is to HUMANIZE; EDUCATE; and ELEVATE the conversations about reentry of the formerly incarcerated. We want to provide an intimate platform that gives voice to the formerly incarcerated, to representative of service organizations that support and facilitate the reentry process, and to public officials who are vested in a successful transition from prison to everyday life. Our target audience are ordinary people who care about this issue but may not know enough about what it is like to come home after spending time behind bars. Everyone who cares about the issue of mass incarceration in this country can play a role in ensuring people are not defined by their worse mistakes and have the tools they need to successfully reintegrate.
