Don't forget to grab your free scripture journal at PrayingChristianWomen.com/journal today! When spiritual authority crosses into control, how do you recognize it—and why is it so hard to name while you're inside it? In this special edition of the Praying Christian Women podcast, Jaime and Alana take a break from the usual Prayer Through the Psalms series to share a deeply personal interview from their true crime podcast series, Christian True-Crime Junkies. Coinciding with Spiritual Abuse Awareness Month, this is Part 1 of a 3-part conversation exploring Alana's harrowing experience in a Christian cult during her college years—a story she is sharing in depth for the first time. What began as a faith community rooted in belonging and purpose slowly revealed patterns of manipulation, control, and spiritual abuse. Through Alana's firsthand account, we unpack how high-control religious environments form, why intelligent and faith-seeking young adults are especially vulnerable, and how Scripture, obedience, and "submission" can be weaponized to silence questions and override personal discernment. Whether you have experienced spiritual abuse yourself or simply want to protect your loved ones, we hope you'll join us as we learn to distinguish between a healthy church and a high-control group, ultimately pointing us back to the safety and freedom found in a genuine relationship with Jesus. NOTE: Part 2 of this conversation will air on Tuesday, 1/20 on the Christian True-Crime Junkies! podcast, with Part 3 to follow! Deadbeat Newsom defaults on $20 billion—and guess who's paying? While every other state in America used federal funds to responsibly pay off their COVID unemployment loans, California chose a different path: stimulus checks for voters and zero dollars toward the debt. Now businesses are stuck with automatic payroll tax hikes that escalate $21 annually, with surcharges projected to exceed $400 per worker. Meanwhile, Newsom had a $100 billion budget surplus in 2022 but didn't use a dime to help employers. Texas paid off their debt. Florida paid off their debt. Even Washington paid theirs. But California? They're too busy funding illegal immigrant healthcare and virtue signaling to care about the businesses fleeing the state in droves. Budweiser just closed their last Bay Area brewery—think that's just about beer sales? How long can businesses survive when California keeps piling on "the greatest hidden tax" while maintaining the nation's highest unemployment rate? Is anyone surprised Newsom wants to run this playbook nationally in 2028? Drop your thoughts below, and if you're tired of watching taxpayers get fleeced, subscribe and share this with every business owner you know.

In this episode, Aaron welcomes real estate developer Bobby Fijan to discuss one of the most overlooked crises in American urban life: the dramatic decline of children in major cities. Once filled with kids playing in the streets, neighborhoods in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and beyond are now increasingly childless. Bobby and Aaron explore the causes—from Richard Florida's influential “creative class” vision that reshaped city priorities, to financial incentives driving developers to build studios and one-bedrooms instead of family-sized apartments, to skyrocketing private-school costs and the loss of family-friendly infrastructure. They also examine why this matters: cities are engines of opportunity and culture, but forcing ambitious young people to choose between career growth and starting a family is a societal failure. Bobby shares his vision for “baby maybe” housing, practical ways to make cities welcoming for young families again, and why a biblical image of elderly people watching children play in the streets should inspire modern urban planning. The conversation ends with a provocative look at how cities have become extraordinarily dog-friendly—at the expense of being kid-friendly.If you care about the future of America's greatest cities, this is a must-listen.CHAPTERS(00:00 - Intro & Welcome Bobby Fijan)(00:55 - The Collapse of Children in Big Cities)(03:17 - Why Kids Disappear After Age 5 (And Now Even Younger))(04:31 - Richard Florida and the Rise of the Creative Class)(07:13 - How Cities Catered to Young Singles—and Forgot Families)(10:55 - The Insane Cost of Private Schools in Cities)(12:47 - Decline of Catholic/Parochial Schools)(14:22 - Why Childless Cities Matter)(17:48 - Economic & Cultural Hubs Need Families Too)(19:45 - Texas Cities vs. Legacy East Coast Cities)(23:35 - Why We Keep Building Studios & One-Bedrooms)(26:23 - Financialization of Housing & Developer Incentives)(28:28 - Introducing “Baby Maybe” Housing)(31:29 - How to Fix the System (Fair Housing, Subsidies, Vision))(36:36 - Dogs, Kids, and the Future of Urban Life)(46:47 - Closing Thoughts)BOBBY FIJAN LINKS:

Episode #445: Born in Yangon in 1984 and raised in the small town of Ye, Shakeel grew up as a Muslim in a deeply divided Myanmar. His childhood was shaped by the tension between his artistic passions and the restrictions of a conservative religious environment. When he began to draw, his relatives told him it was forbidden by faith. School brought little relief—there, Buddhist classmates bullied him with the slur “kalar,” while only a few offered friendship. Books and music became his refuge from isolation. In 2004, Shakeel began his career as a translator and editor at a sports journal. Despite his talent, he faced persistent discrimination from Buddhist colleagues who asked insulting questions about his faith. Feeling alienated, he resigned after a year. Later, at The Voice newspaper, prejudice again forced him out. “I decided I will never apply for a permanent job at a Burmese organization,” he recalls. Instead, he chose the independence of freelance journalism. Photography became his calling—a continuation of his early love for images. But soon after he turned to photojournalism full-time, Myanmar's 2021 coup changed everything. While documenting protests, Shakeel was arrested and tortured; his Muslim identity only made the physical abuse he suffered even harsher. Fleeing arrest, he escaped to Mae Sot, Thailand, where he continues his work documenting the conflict. Shakeel has witnessed harrowing scenes: airstrikes on civilians in Karenni State, families torn apart, children killed. Haunted by what he saw, he photographs the dead with reverence. “I always apologize to their souls,” he says, “and promise I will use these photos for justice.” Despite lingering prejudice, Shakeel finds hope in the unity of Myanmar's revolution. “All minorities sacrifice their lives for the country,” he says. “After the revolution, I hope we will live in a place with no discrimination, where everyone has the same opportunity.”

Today we're stepping into a topic that every believer faces, no matter how long you've walked with God. Temptation is not a sign of weakness — it's a sign that there's a battle over your destiny. And Brother, let me tell you: the enemy doesn't tempt you in the areas you don't care about. He hits you where the impact will be greatest. He hits where you're vulnerable, where you're tired, where you're lonely, where your guard is down. But here's the thing we forget:Temptation isn't something you reason with. It's something you run from. You don't negotiate with darkness. You don't debate your flesh. You don't see how close you can get to the edge. The Bible doesn't say “stand firm against temptation.”It says flee it.Let's go deeper.

Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Lauren revisits her conversation with Author and Historian, Dr. Jerry Newcombe, on the faith-steeped history of the holiday and the Pilgrims who landed in the New World. Fleeing from Europe to the New World in search of religious freedom in 1620, the Pilgrims initially intended to settle in northern Virginia, near Jamestown, where an established community already existed. But their ship was blown off course and landed instead at Plymouth, Massachusetts. And because they were in unsettled territory, the Pilgrims (before disembarking the Mayflower) created a document that became the prototype for America's Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Lauren and Dr. Newcombe discuss the very first Thanksgiving, as the Pilgrims sat down with the Indians to share a meal, which was always about giving thanks to an Almighty God, through whose Providence they were brought to a new land. This holy Martyr was an Egyptian and a soldier during the reigns of Diocletian and Maximian. Though he was known for his valor in combat, he renounced his soldier's rank when his legion was ordered to seize Christians in north Africa. Fleeing to the mountains, he dwelt there for some time in silence and solitude, devoting his days to prayer. In time, he presented himself at a pagan festival, denounced the idols and declared himself a Christian. For this he was handed over to the governor of the city, who subjected him to horrible tortures and finally had him beheaded. Some faithful retrieved part of his relics and gave them honorable burial near Lake Mareotis, about thirty miles from Alexandria. The church built over his tomb became a place of pilgrimage not only for countless Egyptians but for Christians all over the world: evidence has been found of journeys to his shrine from as far away as Ireland. The Synaxarion gives an account of the Saint's intervention in the Second World War: "In June 1942, during the North-Africa campaign that was decisive for the outcome of the Second World War, the German forces under the command of General Rommel were on their way to Alexandria, and happened to make a halt near a place which the Arabs call El-Alamein after Saint Menas. An ancient ruined church there was dedicated to the Saint; and there some people say he is buried. Here the weaker Allied forces including some Greeks confronted the numerically and militarily superior German army, and the result of the coming battle seemed certain. During the first night of engagement, Saint Menas appeared in the midst of the German camp at the head of a caravan of camels, exactly as he was shown on the walls of the ruined church in one of the frescoes depicting his miracles. This astounding and terrifying apparition so undermined German morale that it contributed to the brilliant victory of the Allies. The Church of Saint Menas was restored in thanksgiving and a small monastery was established there."

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! For Stephanie Smith, childhood wasn't defined by toys or bedtime stories—it was defined by shadows. The house her family called home was alive with something unseen, something that moved through rooms, whispered her name, and filled every night with dread. But when she tried to talk about it, her parents brushed it off, desperate to protect her from the truth: their home was haunted. Years later, Stephanie would learn just how real those fears were. One terrifying night, the haunting escalated beyond denial—forcing her and her mother to flee the house in pure fear. Whatever was inside had made its message clear: get out. That experience would change Stephanie's life forever. Instead of running from the paranormal, she chose to confront it. As an adult, she became a paranormal investigator, determined to uncover the truths that once terrified her—and to help others understand the forces she grew up with. Today on The Grave Talks, Stephanie Smith shares her story of fear, awakening, and empowerment. It's proof that the things that haunt us as children can shape the paths we take as adults—and that sometimes, facing the darkness is the only way to take back control. In 1988, the Knowles family's journey across Australia's remote Nullarbor Plain turned into a nightmare, when in the pre-dawn hours of January 20th, they encountered a glowing, egg-shaped object that chased their car along the Eyre Highway. They claimed the light emitted a high-pitched hum, filled the car with a gray mist, and lifted the vehicle off the road before dropping it, blowing out a tire. Fleeing in terror, they found the car dented and covered in black dust. A police officer confirmed their distress, and a truck driver reported seeing strange lights in the same area. What attacked the Knowles family that night? This week, we take a look. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.
