This holy Martyr was an Egyptian and a soldier during the reigns of Diocletian and Maximian. Though he was known for his valor in combat, he renounced his soldier's rank when his legion was ordered to seize Christians in north Africa. Fleeing to the mountains, he dwelt there for some time in silence and solitude, devoting his days to prayer. In time, he presented himself at a pagan festival, denounced the idols and declared himself a Christian. For this he was handed over to the governor of the city, who subjected him to horrible tortures and finally had him beheaded. Some faithful retrieved part of his relics and gave them honorable burial near Lake Mareotis, about thirty miles from Alexandria. The church built over his tomb became a place of pilgrimage not only for countless Egyptians but for Christians all over the world: evidence has been found of journeys to his shrine from as far away as Ireland.   The Synaxarion gives an account of the Saint's intervention in the Second World War: "In June 1942, during the North-Africa campaign that was decisive for the outcome of the Second World War, the German forces under the command of General Rommel were on their way to Alexandria, and happened to make a halt near a place which the Arabs call El-Alamein after Saint Menas. An ancient ruined church there was dedicated to the Saint; and there some people say he is buried. Here the weaker Allied forces including some Greeks confronted the numerically and militarily superior German army, and the result of the coming battle seemed certain. During the first night of engagement, Saint Menas appeared in the midst of the German camp at the head of a caravan of camels, exactly as he was shown on the walls of the ruined church in one of the frescoes depicting his miracles. This astounding and terrifying apparition so undermined German morale that it contributed to the brilliant victory of the Allies. The Church of Saint Menas was restored in thanksgiving and a small monastery was established there."

United Nations officials have condemned mass killings by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan's el-Fasher. UN officials have warned the UN Security Council that the city has "descended into an even darker hell". The RSF took over el-Fasher, capital of North Darfur state, on Sunday after forcing Sudan's army to withdraw from its last stronghold in the western Darfur region. The paramilitary force has been accused of ethnic killings since its power struggle with the army erupted into violence in April 2023, but the RSF leadership has consistently denied the accusations - although this week its leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo admitted to the violations in el-Fasher. Meanwhile , the World health Organisation says it has received reports that more than 450 civilians in a hospital in the Sudanese City of Al Fasher. BBC's Jeremy Bowen reports

Florida's immigration policies in recent years have made the state 63% less likely to have attracted illegal immigrants compared to the average other state around the country.

Revelation Dates: August 1836 – April 1838 Revelation Places: Salem, Massachusetts; Kirtland, Ohio; Farr West, Missouri Section 111 - Historical Background: In the summer of 1836, a member from Massachusetts by the name of Jonathan Burgess, came to Joseph regarding a sister member in Salem, Massachusetts who was now deceased. He explained that prior to her death she intended to give the church a large treasure of gold and silver which was stored in her basement. Seemingly true, Joseph knew this treasure would be a great blessing to help pay the significant debts taken on by the church for the building of the temple and assisting the saints in Zion. As Joseph, Hyrum, Sidney and Oliver left Kirtland on their mission to the Northeast, they stopped in Salem. Upon arrival they met with brother Burgess, but the sister's home (and treasure) could not be found due to the tremendous changes in the growth of the city. Meanwhile, back in Zion the saints who had been driven from Jackson County were settling in Clay County. Now, they were asked to leave that county also. Amidst all this turmoil, many of the church leadership were away on this missionary effort, and Joseph received the following revelation. Recap: The Lord is pleased with their journey, despite their folly (for the treasure). Don't be concerned about the debts of the church, for the Lord will give the saints power to cover these debts. Continue the missionary work in Salem and the vicinity. Section 112 - Historical Background: As it often occurs, following marvelous and beautiful spiritual manifestations, come equally spectacular evil doings, hardships and tribulation. The saints had experienced magnificent spiritual visions and wonders at the dedication of the Kirtland temple, but were now experiencing unprecedented mobs and persecution. Little did they know the Lord was about to manifest significant sifting in the  church, including its leadership. The year following the temple dedication saw a spirit of apostasy sweep through the church. In the midst of this, the Lord opened England as a focus for missionary work, which became incredibly successful. It had been nearly a year since the Lord had given Joseph a direct revelation. The Lord directs this to the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve (Thomas B Marsh is Quorum President). Recap: Thomas B Marsh was troubled, prayerfully seeking repentance, which was granted. Now, he must remain faithful and preach the gospel. The Lord knows his heart and he must refrain from being partial towards the brethren. Admonish the 12 Apostles for their sins, who must humble themselves, soften their hearts and repent. Marsh holds the keys to administer over the twelve. A day of desolation and lamentation will cover the earth, beginning in the church. Go with the twelve into the world and preach the Lord's gospel. Stay faithful. Section 113 - Historical Background: 1837 and 1838 were the saddest years in the church up to this time, with rampant apostasy and threatening murders. Armed mobs pursued Joseph constantly. In one day, Joseph was arrested, released and arrested again 6 times. Fleeing for their lives, the saints abandoned their homes and escaped into the western frontier, settling temporarily in Farr West Missouri. Upon his arrival, Joseph was asked several questions by the brethren concerning the book of Isaiah. This revelation is one of three sections in the Doctrine and Covenants that deal with scriptural interpretation (see also sections 74 and 77). Recap: Isaiah Ch 11: The Stem of Jesse is Jesus Christ; the Rod of Jesse describes Joseph Smith as a resurrected being; the Root of Jesse describes Joseph Smith in mortality; Ch 52: The strength of Zion is the Priesthood; To loosen the bands of her neck is in reference to scattered Israel and releasing the curse upon the Jews. Section 114 - Historical Background: This revelation relates primarily to David W Patton. In 1835 Patton was ordained to be an apostle and was always faithful to Joseph and obedient to God. In this revelation, David W Patton is called on a mission. Note: In October, 1838, while defending the church against an angry mob at Crooked River, Apostle David W. Patton was killed, thus becoming the first martyred “Prophet, Seer and Revelator” in the last days. Recap: David W. Patton to settle his affairs and go into the mission field to preach the gospel. Those who hold church positions that are unfaithful will be replaced.

"Plentiful Country, The Great Potato Famine and the Making of Irish New York" by Professor Tyler Anbinder details the experiences of famine Irish immigrants who arrived in New York between 1845 and 1850, highlighting their journey from hardship to significant socioeconomic advancement. A primary source for this account is the extensive records of the Immigrant Savings Bank. Unlike other immigrant records, such as those from Castle Garden and early Ellis Island, which were lost to fire, these "test books" captured detailed biographical information—including names, occupations, mother's maiden names, family members, and arrival details—used as a security measure in the absence of photo IDs. This data enabled the author to trace individual immigrant stories. The narrative begins with the devastating Great Potato Famine in Ireland, caused by a fungus that thrived in the cool, damp climate, destroying the staple crop on which much of the population depended. Fleeing starvation, many, often the strongest, endured perilous voyages. They frequently traveled through Liverpool, England, to access cheaper passage, only to face overcrowded and disease-ridden "coffin ships" across the Atlantic, where typhus and cholera were common. Arrival in New York was typically unceremonious, with immigrants disembarking directly onto docks before Castle Garden became a central reception point. Upon arrival, many Irish immigrants, like Bartholomew O'Donnell, initially found work as day laborers, often in physically demanding construction jobs in impoverished areas such as Five Points and its infamous Old Brewery. They also faced significant prejudice rooted in their Catholicism and racial stereotypes, exemplified by "no Irish need apply" notices and movements like the Know Nothing Party. Despite these challenges, the Irish displayed remarkable ambition, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit. They were diligent savers, motivated by the psychological scars of the famine to establish emergency funds in banks. The book provides numerous examples of their success: Captain James Kavanagh of the 69th Regiment (Irish Brigade) fought heroically in the Civil War, later finding a civil service position. The Lynches saved for a decade before moving west to become successful farmers in Minnesota, founding Irish communities. The Ruddics, after missing the gold rush in California, became landlords and real estate investors in San Francisco. Michael Quigley built a thriving boat business in New York Harbor, which his son Bill Quigley successfully continued. Tailor George Fox rose to prominence through savvy marketing, even creating clothes for figures like President Millard Fillmore. Most notably, Michael Failen, a billiards champion, and his son-in-law Hugh Colander patented an improved pool table cushion, mass-produced their high-quality tables, and became wealthy, even supplying President Ulysses S. Grant with a custom table.
