Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Beloved pastor Andrew Murray (1828-1917) shared how in his native South Africa, various diseases affect the orange trees there. To the unpracticed eye all may seem fine, but an expert arborist can spot the rot that heralds the tree’s slow death. The only way to save the diseased tree is to remove the stem and branches from the root and graft them onto a new one. Then the tree can thrive, producing fruit. Murray connected this illustration to the apostle Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians. From prison in Rome, Paul wrote a letter that wonderfully summarizes the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral heart shines through when he prayed that the believers would be strengthened with power through Christ’s Spirit in their inner being so that He would dwell in their hearts by faith (Ephesians 3:16-17). Paul longed that they’d be “rooted and established in love” and would grasp the full measure of God’s abundant love (vv. 17-18). As believers in Jesus, our roots sink deeply into the rich soil of God’s love, where the nutrients fortify us and help us grow. And as we’re grafted onto Jesus, His Spirit helps us to produce fruit. We may have to weather storms that bend us one way or another, but we can withstand them when we’re rooted in the Source of life and love.

To put down roots means to settle in, to become fixed or established, to reside or dwell deeply, to create a sense of 'home'. There are tremendous benefits to deep roots. Plants that are deeply rooted have better access to water, oxygen and nutrition; they contribute more to the health of the environment around them, they endure drought or stress better, are more stable and less prone to disease.  This Sunday we begin a new series on the Apostle Paul's letters to the church in Thessalonica. We've called this series Hope for Today, Faith for Tomorrow. Paul wrote these letters to encourage the Thessalonian believers to grow in their faith; to develop a faith so deeply rooted within them that every facet of their lives was transformed by the gospel. The kind of faith that is steadfast, authentic, joyful, and contagious. That's the kind of faith that changed the world then, and continues to do so, if we have the courage to cultivate it. ----------------------------------- TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP ----------------------------------- Let us know that you were watching with us and you will be entered to receive a free prize by completing our Connection Card: http://dsf.church/ecard Give Online: https://www.simplechurchgiving.net/App/Giving/dsf Message Notes: https://www.dayspringfellowship.com/messages Like, comment & subscribe to stay updated! It's Not About the Alcohol

In today's episode, Colleen introduces a transformative exercise to uncover the deeply rooted beliefs that might be holding you back from achieving your goals around alcohol. Learn how to identify these limiting thoughts, challenge their validity, and replace them with empowering beliefs that align with the identity you want to build. This episode is a must-listen for high-achieving women who are ready to break free from shame-based narratives and create lasting, identity-based change. Key Takeaways: Beliefs Are Thoughts You No Longer Question: Many limiting beliefs feel true simply because they are habitual thoughts you've practiced over time. These beliefs often stem from subconscious narratives about who you think you are. Identify and Challenge Your Limiting Beliefs: Think of someone you admire for their relationship with alcohol and ask yourself: What do you believe about them that makes them capable? Use this reflection to identify the gap between their identity and your current beliefs about yourself. Instead of asking “Why am I like this?”—which reinforces the limiting belief—shift to asking, “In what context is this belief not true about me?” Rewriting the Narrative: Find a context where the limiting belief doesn't apply, or borrow empowering beliefs from your role model. Create a replacement belief that feels true for you and practice thinking it consistently. Remember: Your feelings are a direct result of your thoughts. By changing your thoughts, you change how you feel and behave. Actionable Steps: Reflect on a Role Model: Identify someone whose relationship with alcohol you admire. Write down the beliefs you think they hold about themselves. Uncover Your Story: List the limiting beliefs you have about yourself that might be creating a gap. Identify one belief that feels the most true and painful. Challenge and Replace: Find an instance where this belief doesn't hold true or borrow a belief from your role model. Create a new belief that feels authentic and achievable. Practice replacing the limiting belief with this new thought every time it arises. Monitor Your Progress: Track moments when you successfully challenge old beliefs and celebrate small wins. This builds motivation and reinforces the new identity you're cultivating. Homework: Identify one limiting belief about yourself related to alcohol and replace it with a new, empowering thought. Write it down, and each time the old belief surfaces, consciously replace it with the new one. Over time, watch as your mindset and behavior begin to shift. Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL.
