Les cages sont quasiment toutes remplies. « Mais demain, la fourrière passe, si vous ne trouvez pas de chien aujourd’hui, il y en aura peut-être un demain qui vous conviendra mieux ». Les salariés de la SPA de Rennes font tout ce qu’ils peuvent pour que les animaux dont ils s’occupent soient adoptés le plus vite possible. Parfois, c’est un peu compliqué. Nous les avons accompagné dans leur quotidien. Un reportage tout en sensibilité à retrouver en podcast. Dans la chatterie, il y a des chats cassés, dont les miaulements sont parfois tout enroués. Il leur manque une oreille ici, un œil là. On y croise des petits chatons et des gros matous. Dans les chenils, des vieux chiens, des chiens foufous. Mais aussi des chiens normaux. Quand les salariés doivent témoigner au micro, ils laissent parfois échapper une larme. « Vous me faites pleurer avec vos histoires. » Preuve que l’engagement émotionnel est fort entre eux et les animaux. « Parfois, on en retrouve dans des états terribles… Avant de devenir bénévole à la SPA, je savais que les gens maltraitaient les animaux mais je ne pensais pas que c’était à ce point-là », raconte Jean-Claude, 63 ans, derrière son ordinateur. Lui est enquêteur. Il vérifie, intervient et se renseigne sur les maltraitances animales chez les particuliers, dans le cadre d’une adoption ou bien d’un signalement… Il est soulagé de pouvoir raconter les horreurs dont il est témoin. « Il faut que les gens sachent. Nous avons un vrai travail de sensibilisation à faire avec le public autour de la question du bien-être animal », s’exclame Jennifer, la responsable du refuge. À Rennes, ils sont 11 salariés à travailler quotidiennement pour le bien-être des chiens et des chats abandonnés. Tous le disent : « Si on se laisse happer par l’émotion, c’est foutu. Parce que derrière, on a 150 animaux dont on doit s’occuper. Alors bien sûr qu’on a envie de s’énerver sur les gens, mais on a pas le droit. On préfère faire de la pédagogie… » Le plus difficile, c’est quand certains meurent. « On a quand même le temps de s’attacher. Quand ils sont avec nous, nous sommes un peu leurs maîtres de substitution. Tout ce qu’on fait, on le fait pour les animaux. » Un reportage de Hugo CHECINSKI.
