Movies like “The Goonies,” “Animal House” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” are among the most famous of those filmed in Oregon, and they're points of pride for Oregon film buffs. Television shows like “Grimm” and “Portlandia” and animation studios like Laika and ShadowMachine burnish the state’s production portfolio. While newer projects continue to shoot in Oregon, the industry was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a lengthy writers and actors strike and an industry-wide shift to overseas production. Tim Williams is the executive director of Oregon Film, a semi-independent state agency that promotes movie and TV production in Oregon. He joins us to talk about how the industry is faring in Oregon.
If you remember making mixtapes off the radio and your parents' only rule was to be home when the streetlights came on, this episode is for you. Jenn and I are zeroing in on our specific slice of Gen X, a micro-generation we're calling the 'Goonies Generation'. We're the kids born in the late 70s who had one foot in an analog childhood of latchkey independence and another in a fully digital adulthood, making us the ultimate translators between the old and new school. We'll take a fun trip down memory lane talking about MTV, arcade games at Pizza Hut, and the terror of Cold War drills, exploring how these moments shaped us into scrappy, independent, and connection-craving adults. That unique upbringing directly translates to how we operate today, especially as leaders. We'll discuss why our generation values autonomy, despises micromanagement, and leads with empowerment. But we also get real about the pressures we face now—being the overlooked 'sandwich generation' caring for both kids and aging parents, all while navigating our peak earning years. This episode is a call to action for our often-unseen generation to step up, recognize our role as the 'glue' holding things together, and connect with others who get it, because Goonies never say die. In this episode of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I talk with James Kahn, the novelist behind some of the most iconic movie novelizations of the 1980s, including Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies, and Poltergeist. James shares how a chance encounter while working as an ER doctor in Santa Monica led him onto the set of ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, where he met Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg, an opportunity that set his writing career in motion. We discuss:How James went from emergency medicine to Hollywood writerHis early break writing the Poltergeist novelizationThe creative freedom Spielberg gave him on Temple of Doom, The Goonies, and othersWriting Return of the Jedi under intense secrecy — including how George Lucas gave him a decoy script where Luke kills the EmperorInventing backstory details that became “canon” for decades, like Ben and Owen being brothers and hints about Anakin's fall into the lava pitsGiving Short Round his own chapter and exploring Mikey's POV in The GooniesHow his books helped fans relive these films long before home videoWhy a great novelization is about more than retelling a screenplayHis recent memoir, A Jedi Memoir: A Double Life, weaving together stories from Hollywood and emergency medicineIf you grew up with these books, this one's packed with insights, behind-the-scenes stories, and moments of movie history you probably didn't know. Frank and Squeaks cover Paramount's massive week of moves after the Skydance merger, including a new UFC deal, a bigger theatrical slate, a push for family adventure movies, and fresh Star Trek film plans. They react to Greta Gerwig's Narnia set photos, talk through the young Rambo prequel casting, and share practical steps for Roblox safety that parents can use right now. Reviews land for Alien Earth and King of the Hill. Plus, Frank chats with Alex Austin about building a social platform out of a podcast app and what moderation and growth look like in 2025. Convention plans and network updates round it out. Family adventure is a priority which fills a gap left by pure superhero focus and could broaden audience reach. Two Star Trek films are on deck, one tied to the Kelvin crew and one new project from Toby Haynes. Narnia starts with The Magician's Nephew, which makes the world feel fresh while connecting to classic imagery. The Rambo prequel raises a bigger question about when to create new action icons instead of reviving old ones. Roblox needs stronger safety guardrails, while parents can act now with private servers, whitelists, spending locks, and no random chats. Alien Earth blends practical effects with slow-burning world-building and earns a nine out of ten from both hosts. King of the Hill nails a modern continuation that honors the original and lands a perfect ten out of ten from Frank. Memorable quotes Squeaks on Paramount. Right now, they are not messing around Frank Family adventure feels like the missing lane, and it is a smart way to reach everyone Frank Alien Earth plays like Fargo in space, and I mean that as a compliment Frank, this new King of the Hill does not feel like a reboot, it feels like the next season Squeaks if you are not doing enough to protect kids other people will try, and that should be a wake-up call Call to action If you enjoy the show tap Follow or Subscribe in your podcast app. Leave a quick rating and review to help more geeks find us. Tune in and find out! Plot Summary:Colombian terrorist Luis Cali (Andrew Divoff) takes an American prep school hostage as a means of gaining his drug lord father's freedom. Privileged yet rebellious students Joey (Wil Wheaton), Billy (Sean Astin), Snuffy (Keith Coogan) and Hank (T.E. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay decided to bring their degenerate sensibilities to a kids classic as they discussed 'Goonies.' Andy starts with a bang as he remembers playing around with dynamite like the gang uses in the film, but the results were far more frightening than what was depicted on screen. Then the boys talk about a movie that found the perfect '80s alchemy, and is so steeped in nostalgia it seems slightly AI-created. First they tackle the tough subjects, such as 60% of the film's runtime revolving around ripping on Chunk being overweight, and Sloth being mentally challenged. In the case of Chunk the on-camera shaming seemed to work as the real life actor went on to become a major player in Hollywood. It wasn't only those characters who had it rough, but Andy makes a case for the Fratelli family, who besides their murderous traits are just your typical Long Island crew. Bombay recalls the movie inspiring him and friends to go on an underground adventure in the sewers, and how it was far more harrowing than this Richard Donner-directed flick made it appear. Basically the episode devolves into the guys confessing all their sins just like Chunk being interrogated, except with less stories about pouring puke on people at the theater. By the end of the ep you'll find yourself doing the Truffle Shuffle.
Another Wednesday…coming up! Should be decent today before some showers & thunderstorms move into the area tomorrow. In the news this morning, a debate about the water bubblers in La Crosse, a couple in West Salem get arrested for serious child-abuse accusations, an official cause of death for Ozzy, a guest at an Airbnb in Madison allegedly found hidden cameras in the bathroom, the abandoned boat in Milwaukee("Deep Thought") has a new owner, and AI therapists have been banned in Illinois. In sports, the Brewers have now won five straight after beating the Braves again last night, we took a look at this weekend's NFL preseason schedule, Jordan Addison of the Vikings gets suspended by the league, and ESPN is acquiring the NFL Network in a massive deal. Elsewhere in sports, another sex toy ends up on the floor of a WNBA game, an update on the Nate Hobbs injury, and March Madness will not be expanding this coming season. We let you know what's on TV today and talked about another rumor of a "Goonies" sequel. A YouTuber just visited 50 states in 50 days and used his adventure to raise money for St. Jude's hospitals. And a restaurant in Hudson, WI was saved by it's teen workers when the owner's wife had a medical issue. Is this the lamest excuse to miss work? Is this what the kids are doing nowadays? Does anyone still have work ethic? We took a look at a list of some of the most unhygienic things that people still do. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a priest who got busted for soliciting prostitutes, a woman who accidentally got charged $8,500 for parking in a hospital's garage, an airport in Atlanta that leaked raw sewage all over the place, a woman who set a dude's house on fire over the $7 he allegedly owed her, and a teacher who encouraged a couple of siblings to fight at a daycare.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Grab your knee pads and get ready to shred! Hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell tackle the 1986 skateboarding flick Thrashin', starring baby-faced Josh Brolin fresh off The Goonies. This loose Romeo and Juliet adaptation follows Corey Webster as he navigates Venice Beach skate gangs, romance, and the ultimate downhill race—the LA Massacre.Key Discussion PointsThe 80s Sports Movie Formula: Krissy and Nathan dive deep into how Thrashin' fits the classic 80s pattern of "secret counterculture sport" movies like Bloodsport, Rad, and Over the Top. These films were made by outsiders trying to dramatize subcultures they didn't understand, resulting in gloriously inauthentic takes on skateboarding, break dancing, and martial arts.Skateboarding in the 80s: The hosts share personal memories of 80s skate culture—from coveting skateboard magazines and stickers to the reality of how incredibly difficult skating actually is. They discuss how the film treats skaters like gangs (the good "ramp locals" vs. the evil "daggers") rather than capturing authentic skate culture.Baby Josh Brolin: Before becoming Thanos, Josh Brolin was a smooth-faced teenager learning his craft. The hosts appreciate his early charisma while noting he hadn't yet developed his signature gravitas.Other Topics CoveredRed Hot Chili Peppers' appearance as the party bandThe legendary skating pool location that real skaters cherishedNunchuck jousting as conflict resolutionHair earrings and other questionable 80s fashion choicesThe film's low-stakes Romeo and Juliet adaptationSkateboarding montages and safety gear appreciationThe absurd LA Massacre downhill race finaleFinal VerdictBoth hosts rate Thrashin' a solid 5-5.5/10—"aggressively okay" with enough charm to entertain but lacking the cheesy fun factor to make it memorable.Deep Cut RecommendationsNathan suggests Over the Top (Stallone arm wrestling) for superior 80s sports schlock, while Krissy recommends Wet Hot American Summer as the perfect parody of these types of films.Subscribe to The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast for more radical retro reviews! --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Holy cow!!!! We made it to the ripe old episode of 100! What a run, we cannot believe it. Tim and Mark knew it would be long way to number 100, but alas, here we are.Crockett is front and center while finally coming to grips and facing responsibility for his actions as Burnett. Some are against him, while those that matter have his back. But, this takes a back seat to some escape convicts causing mayhem while looking for a buried treasure. Should this type of plot be left to The Goonies? Heeeey yooou guuuys!!Some special guests stop or call in the offer kind words for Vice of Miami number 100. Listen in and find out who. Now, for those of you who don't know, I'm an 80s kid. By that, I mean I turned 16 at the end of that decade. I grew up with posters of Ralph Macchio and Michael J Fox on my wall, I went to see New Kids on the Block in concert, and when I read about The Brat Pack in newspapers and magazines (social media was not a thing), I wanted to be a member of that group. From media released long after that time, it appears that while fans wanted to be part of the gang, the gang itself was not overly happy with the label they were given by David Blum in his 1985 New Yorker article. In 2021, Andrew McCarthy released his autobiography, which talked a little about his experiences as an '80s heartthrob, and in 2024, he produced a documentary exploring the impact this label had on him and his fellow Brat Packers! This week, I met up with my friend Lorraine, and as we're both very proud '80s kids, we talked about the autobiography, the documentary and our perceptions of what it meant to us. Yep, this week is different. Welcome again to Lorraine, and join us both on a trip back in time, when things were easier, when the Goonies were doing the truffle shuffle, Jake Ryan was waiting outside our house, standing in front of a Porsche and wearing a gross pink satin prom dress got you the boy of your dreams!
Happy Heat Dome to all who celebrate! For those listening in the northern hemisphere, it's likely you are very, very warm. At podcast HQ in Memphis, it's recommended we drink water and stay indoors between 11 AM and November 2. It's pretty brutal. Where it's always a consistent and pleasant 58 degrees? The Old Spanish Treasure Cave in Gravette, Arkansas. I adore a roadside attraction. But one that comes with a very unexpected, non advertised supernatural twist? It was a spring break road trip adventure of a lifetime. Grab some road snacks and settle in for a Goonies-style tall tale of Spanish invaders, hidden treasure, and quite possibly a ghost in the darkest recesses of an underground cavern. Check out their website for photos of the cave and some of the artifacts mentioned in the story: https://spanish-treasure-cave.com Enjoy! And thank you as always for your support of the show! Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Richies! In light of AAPI Month, we have a story about someone who has given “comeback” a whole new meaning. After fleeing North Vietnam as a child with his family, Ke Huy Quan turns to acting and is immediately cast in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and then “The Goonies.” He seems to be on a rocket to stardom. But then, in an industry that's unfair to non-white actors, the acting roles dry up and he can't find work. So he pivots and turns to stunt coordinating. But 30 years later, just when he thinks he'll never act again, he's cast in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and everything changes. Again. He wins an Oscar. And 50-year-old Ke is a star all over again. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss.
