Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactWhen The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra premiered, Britten wasn't sure audiences would take it seriously. He needn't have worried—it's now one of the most-performed orchestral works ever written for education. Ironically, it's also one of the most sophisticated fugues in the entire 20th-century repertoire.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Johann Sebastian Bach is a towering cultural icon, a composer who might be seen as the poster boy for “serious music” and spent most of his career in the service of the church. But he played many roles in the course of his life, and could be funny, sassy, conniving, obstinate, and rebellious. Donald Macleod dives into Bach's secular music, and follows his trail as he makes his way in the world, from courts to coffee houses, building a family, two-timing his bosses, and even a stint behind bars.Featured music: Brandenburg Concerto No 5, BWV1050 (i.

Send us a textVanishing identities, sudden relocations, and complete memory loss—welcome to the fascinating world of dissociative amnesia with fugue. Ever wonder what happens when someone's mind creates the ultimate escape hatch from unbearable psychological pain?Dissociative fugue represents an extraordinary psychological defense mechanism where individuals not only lose their autobiographical memories but may travel hundreds of miles away and assume entirely new identities. What makes this condition particularly intriguing is that while personal memories become inaccessible, practical skills remain intact. Someone might disappear from their life as an accountant only to be discovered weeks later working at a grocery store under a different name, with no awareness of their true identity. We explore the clinical presentation, typical development, and evidence-based treatments for this complex condition. You'll learn about the strong connection between childhood trauma and dissociative disorders, and why a phase-oriented approach to treatment is absolutely essential. Through specialized techniques like memory mapping and narrative exposure, therapists can help clients build a coherent sense of identity while respecting the protective function the fugue served. From assessment tools to comorbid conditions, we provide a comprehensive understanding of this rare but fascinating psychological phenomenon.Whether you're preparing for your licensing exam or looking to deepen your clinical knowledge, this episode offers valuable insights into one of psychology's most intriguing defense mechanisms. Musikintro: Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 av Bach, framförd av James Kibbie (licens: Attribution‑NonCommercial‑NoDerivatives 3.0).Källor: Magnus Västerbro, Pestens år: Döden i Stockholm 1710 (Historiska Media 2016) Hosted on Acast. Grandpa Bill Asks: listeners, picture this: We're standing with Dr. Metivier inside the early structure of his physical Memory Palace in Australia. Sunlight streams through the unglazed windows, illuminating the concrete floor where the A-to-Z memory wheel will soon be. In the center of this space, Dr. Metivier stands with his real bass guitar. Now, let's use the Major System to create a memorable scene of him playing multiple Bach works, associating each number with a specific action or element related to a piece.0 - S/Z/Soft C: Imagine Dr. Metivier zipping up a black leather jacket as he prepares to play the opening of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor (often adapted for bass). The 'zipping' sound and the dramatic nature of the piece connect to the 'S' sound of zero.1 - T/Th: He then begins the famous Air on the G String from Orchestral Suite No. 3. Imagine him gently tapping his foot in time with the melody. The 'T' sound links to the number one and the flowing, gentle nature of the piece.2 - N: Next, he transitions to a lively section from one of the Brandenburg Concertos. Visualize a flock of gnats buzzing around his head as he plays a particularly intricate and fast passage, representing the quick, busy nature of the music. The 'N' sound connects to the number two.3 - M: For the powerful Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, imagine a giant ham swinging rhythmically in front of him as he plays the deep, grounding bass line of the Passacaglia. The 'M' sound links to three, and the weighty image reflects the music's gravitas.4 - R: As he moves to a movement from one of the Cello Suites, picture a rower in a small boat gently rocking back and forth in time with the bowing motions his right hand makes on the bass strings. The 'R' sound connects to four and evokes the smooth, flowing quality of the cello.5 - L: Imagine a bright light suddenly illuminating the fretboard as he plays a particularly beautiful and soaring melodic line from the Mass in B minor (again, a bass adaptation). The 'L' sound connects to five and emphasizes the radiant quality of the music.6 - J/Sh/Ch/Soft G: For an adaptation of one of the English Suites, see him suddenly wearing a chef's hat and playfully conducting with his head while he plays a more dance-like and rhythmic section. The 'Ch' sound connects to six and adds a whimsical element.8 - F/V: As he plays a section from the Goldberg Variations (arranged for bass), imagine fluffy white foam suddenly erupting from the sound holes in his bass, bubbling and dissipating with the intricate variations. The 'F' sound connects to eight and provides a visual texture to the complex music.9 - P/B: Finally, for a powerful cadence, imagine a large purple balloon inflating and then gently deflating in time with the final, resonant notes of a Bach Chorale. The 'P/B' sounds connect to nine and provide a strong visual conclusion. So, there you have it, Dr. Metivier in his future Memory Palace, playing a medley of Bach, with each piece and a corresponding Major System number brought to life through a vivid mnemonic image. This is the power of the Magnetic Memory Method in action, connecting sound, image, and location in a truly unforgettable way. In this week's episode, Daniel Ketter presents an essential voice analysis arrangement of J. S. Bach's fugue for solo cello. It traces the composer's solution to weaving a four-part fugal texture with nearly no chords or double stops through inventive combinations of a subject and countersubject. This episode was produced by Jason Jedlicka along with Team Lead Leah Frederick. Special thanks to peer reviewers Gilad Rabinovitch, Ed Klorman, and Joe Straus. Additional thanks to Jason Orr, Jessie Black, and Royce Diamond at Phosphor Studios.SMT-Pod's theme music was written by Maria Tartaglia, with closing music by Yike Zhang. Our journey back through the years of Suspense continues with my favorite episodes from 1944. Lucille Ball is a taxi dancer who hopes to avoid a murderous dance partner in “Dime a Dance” (originally aired on CBS on January 13, 1944), and Charles Ruggles suspects his new housekeeper may be too good to be true in “Suspicion” (originally aired on CBS on February 10, 1944). Orson Welles stars in a rare two-part Suspense science fiction drama “Donovan's Brain” (originally aired on CBS on May 18 and May 25, 1944), and Vincent Price and Ida Lupino co-star in “Fugue in C Minor,” a Gothic horror drama from the pen of Lucille Fletcher (originally aired on CBS on June 1, 1944). Charles Laughton encounters a strange man who claims to have invented an undetectable method for murder in “The Man Who Knew How” (originally aired on CBS on August 10, 1944), and Gene Kelly enjoys a seemingly supernatural streak of luck…until he doesn't in “The Man Who Couldn't Lose” (originally aired on CBS on September 28, 1944).
