Transforming College Advising: A New Approach to Student Success

Changing Higher Ed

Higher education institutions continue to struggle with student retention, career readiness, and underemployment among graduates. Traditional college advising models focus heavily on selecting a major, yet many students graduate with empty degrees that fail to translate into meaningful careers. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Scott Carlson and Dr. Ned Scott Laff, authors of Hacking College: Why the Major Really Doesn't Matter and What Really Does, about how institutions can rethink academic advising, faculty engagement, and student success strategies to better serve today's learners. Carlson, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Laff, who has over 35 years of experience in college and university settings helping students design successful undergraduate experiences, discuss how universities can shift away from a rigid, major-centric model to a personalized student success framework. They explain how students who lack career clarity often end up in underemployment, taking jobs unrelated to their degrees. Their research shows that institutions must evolve their advising structures to help students identify vocational purpose, leverage experiential learning, and navigate the hidden job market. The Problem with Traditional Academic Advising The outdated focus on major selection leads students into rigid career paths, often misaligned with their strengths and interests. A one-size-fits-all advising model leaves first-generation and low-income students struggling to navigate the complexities of higher education. Limited faculty-student engagement prevents students from leveraging university resources and professional networks. Lack of career-aligned experiential learning results in students graduating without the necessary skills and industry connections. Revolutionizing College-to-Career Transition Carlson and Laff propose a new model where higher education leaders integrate career-focused advising and faculty mentorship into the student experience. This involves: Helping students explore hidden intellectualism—their deeper interests and skills that could shape their career trajectories. Connecting students with faculty and industry professionals to uncover career pathways beyond traditional job titles. Expanding experiential learning opportunities through internships, mentorships, and project-based learning. Teaching students to research the hidden job market to discover roles they might never encounter through a standard career fair. Institutional Strategies for Student Success For university presidents, boards, and executive leaders, improving student outcomes requires a fundamental shift in how advising and faculty engagement are structured. Institutions should: Encourage faculty to act as mentors, guiding students beyond coursework to explore real-world career applications. Train advisors to support students in creating flexible, goal-oriented academic plans that integrate experiential learning. Strengthen career services by building industry partnerships and embedding career readiness into academic programming. Utilize existing institutional resources—including government affairs, research opportunities, and alumni networks—to connect students with career pathways. The Hidden Job Market and Career Readiness Career exploration should begin early in a student's academic journey. Institutions must help students develop the ability to recognize opportunities beyond traditional job titles by: Encouraging proactive networking with faculty, professionals, and industry leaders. Teaching students to research and navigate the hidden job market, where many opportunities exist outside of standard recruitment channels. Expanding experiential learning options, such as internships and project-based coursework, to provide practical experience that aligns with evolving workforce demands. With AI-driven automation threatening traditional advising roles, institutions must act now to redefine how they support student career pathways. Colleges that fail to adapt will continue to see declining retention, underemployment, and dissatisfaction among graduates. Five Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Be Open to Change – Institutions must actively remove barriers that prevent student success. The current advising model is failing many students, and colleges need to adopt a more flexible, student-centered approach that helps learners navigate their academic and career paths effectively. Preserve Academic Variety – Colleges are eliminating liberal arts programs due to financial pressures, but this limits students' ability to create multidisciplinary educational experiences. Institutions should strive to maintain a diverse academic landscape that allows students to explore various career pathways. Engage Directly with Students – University leaders should make an effort to understand student concerns firsthand. By informally engaging with students—whether in common areas or casual settings—presidents and board members can gain valuable insights into what students need to thrive. Empower Students to Take Ownership of Their Education – Instead of following rigid degree structures, students should be encouraged to design their own academic experiences by integrating coursework, experiential learning, and industry engagement in ways that align with their career goals. Advisors and faculty should support this by shifting from a prescriptive model to one that helps students think critically about their education. Rethink Institutional Priorities – Colleges can maintain their research and tenure agendas while also fostering a culture that encourages student success. Leaders should create systems that help students perceive higher education as an interconnected network of opportunities rather than a series of disconnected courses. Higher education institutions that fail to evolve will continue to see declining retention and job placement rates. Listen in as Dr. Drumm McNaughton, Scott Carlson, and Dr. Ned Laff explore how colleges can implement meaningful advising reforms to improve student success, institutional sustainability, and long-term career outcomes. Institutions looking for solutions to align their academic programs with evolving student needs should explore Academic Realignment and Redesign strategies. In this episode of the "Admittedly" podcast, former director of MBA admissions Thomas Caleel describes ways for high school Juniors to enjoy their summers in ways that will strengthen their upcoming college applications. He warns against common errors that students and their parents often make as they plan this crucial period in the college preparation process. Summary of Key Points: Remedial academics: Caleel describes when it is appropriate and when it is less advisable to re-take a course following the release of final grades for the school year. Test Prep: Caleel advises students to begin studying and preparing for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. Though they are optional at many schools, taking and excelling at them continues to be crucial to admission. He does mention, though, that test prep and academic tutoring cannot fill the majority of summer. Travels: Caleel advises families against global travels for the summer after Junior year. He emphasizes that this time needs to be spent doing productive work that will strengthen their upcoming college application. He further recommends against working around this advice through “volunteer” work while visiting families in developing countries. What Then?: Caleel gives examples of options for students to flesh out their college application materials including internships in labs and businesses, catering summer camps to specific career goals, and even working at a fast-food or ice cream stand if needed. He reiterates the importance of a letter of recommendation from a senior employee who knows the student well, not just the person with the highest rank. Develop College List: Caleel begins a discussion on the next step in choosing colleges and some of the actions a student can take towards understanding where they best fit for the next stage of academics. This includes touring, emailing the school, and what type of applications to submit/whether early decision is a good fit. As students bridge the gap between Junior and Senior year, Thomas Caleel gives his advice on many possible options for summertime activities. Students should orient their time around what will further their preparedness and application strength for the coming year, as coming in strong during Senior year is essential. Join Thomas's next episode in order to explore advice on how to build a college list that is the best fit for that individual student's future. About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. After earning his MBA at the Wharton School of Business in 2003, he moved to Silicon Valley. Introduction: In the second episode of the third season of the Admittedly Podcast, hosted by Thomas Caleel, the focus is on Juniors in High School who are embarking on the college application process. With Ivy Day looming for Seniors and Juniors just starting this journey, Thomas provides insightful guidance on what Juniors should be doing and thinking about as they head into the summer and prepare for the fall. Summary of Key Points: Taking Ownership of the Process: Thomas emphasizes the importance of Juniors taking ownership of their college application process. Regardless of the counselor assigned or the resources available, it's crucial for students to be proactive and engaged in the process. Providing Comprehensive Information: Juniors are advised to reflect on their high school experiences, including classes, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles, to provide thorough information to college counselors. Parents are encouraged to be honest in their reflections on their child's strengths and weaknesses. Choosing Courses Strategically: Thomas suggests Juniors prioritize academic rigor in their course selections, aligning them with their intended college major. While AP courses are beneficial, it's more important to demonstrate depth of intellectual curiosity than to simply accumulate AP credits. Decisions for IB Students: IB juniors are urged to make strategic decisions about their course selections, ensuring alignment with their desired college major and emphasizing quantitative skills for STEM fields. Academic Performance: The importance of academic performance, particularly in challenging courses, is highlighted. While aiming for high grades is crucial, effort and dedication are equally valued, even if a student receives a lower grade in a rigorous course. Building College Lists: Juniors are advised to thoughtfully consider their preferences and priorities when creating their college lists. Balancing realism with aspiration, students should curate a list that includes reach schools while also considering more realistic options. Summer Activities: Thomas stresses the significance of using the Junior summer to engage in meaningful activities related to students' interests. While some may need to work for financial reasons, aligning summer experiences with academic and career interests can enhance college applications. Avoiding Premature Essay Writing: Juniors are cautioned against prematurely writing college application essays before understanding the essay prompts and integrating summer experiences into their narratives. Conclusion: As Juniors navigate the college application process, Thomas encourages them to take proactive steps, engage with counselors and recommenders, strategically plan their courses, and use the summer to pursue meaningful experiences. By approaching the process with intentionality and reflection, Juniors can set themselves up for success in their college journey.   About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. Today I'm honored to introduce to you: targeted individual, sexual abuse and Hollywood sex kitten survivor, Podcaster, Mafia goddaughter, professional singer, survivor advocate, entrepreneur, podcaster, and all-around inspiration: KC Sunshine!I met KC recently through mutual friends on Twitter and I'm really thrilled to get to share her story on this podcast. KC was born into a Kansas City mafia family and due to the gifts passed down to her through her family's genealogy and bloodline as well as her natural talents for singing, she was targeted from a young age and was molested by 5 different people by the age of 11. She was offered up by her mother to the satanic Hollywood agency and found herself repeatedly being fondled by the rich and famous at her professional singing gigs starting at age 7 and 8. KC was trafficked through several foster homes when school was in session - changing schools 18 times by her Junior Year. She and her brother were severely abused physically and emotionally by their mother but experienced a few years of protection as a Mafia Goddaughter until she returned to foster care and was violently raped twice at age 14. After blaming herself, KC sought forgiveness and devoted her life to Jesus Christ and left home to live on her own at the age of 15. She began therapy at age 17 and found tools of recovery for her trauma. She has been providing free support for sexual trauma survivors for 29 years now and is a true hero in the survivor community! One of the things that I love about KC is that she had everything and everyone in her life trying to tear her down and not only did they fail, but they underestimated her and didn't expect that she would grow up to be a force to be reckoned with and that the abuses that were meant to destroy her would be used to help and heal others. KC Sunshine is exactly as her name sounds - a ray of sunshine, a beacon of hope, and a light in the darkness and I know you will all fall in love with her as much as I have. So please grab a pen and paper and give KC your full and undivided attention! Before I finish introducing today's guest - I wanted to give a quick reminder that if you are a survivor or whistleblower who wants to share your story on the podcast or who wants to share any information privately with me, you can email me at IMAGINEABETTERWORLD2020@GMAIL.COM! I'd also love your support on Substack where I'm taking up journaling as an outlet for me personally to reflect on the podcast, guests, and my advocacy work and you can Subscribe to me at www.emmakatherine.substack.com. All of my social media links are also in the shownotes and I want you all to know how eternally grateful I am for the love, empathy and compassion you show to each brave guest on this show.CONNECT WITH KC: Twitter:  (2) KC Sunshine Pro Singer
