Last week, Volkswagen announced it will build its first overseas electric vehicle battery gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario. The federal and provincial governments declined to say what they'd paid to lure Volkswagen to Canada rather than the U.S. but the Financial Times reported the price was around $15 billion. That's a lot of public money going to subsidize a private company, even one that will support thousands of jobs. So this week, on “It's Political” we take a look at what's driving the case for big subsidies, and how Canada is adopting a green new industrial policy with little public debate. First, we'll hear from stakeholders and experts on the impact of the United States' Inflation Reduction Act, and what it could mean here, north of the U.S. border. Then, we'll sit down with the man some have dubbed Canada's energizer bunny, Innovation, Science and Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne. In this episode: Minister Champagne, Lana Payne, the national president of Unifor, Matt Poirier, senior policy director with the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, John Lester, an executive fellow at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, Marisa Beck,  director of Clean Growth with the Canadian Climate Institute, Jean Simard, the president and CEO of the Aluminum Association of Canada, Brian Kingston, the president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association, and Genevieve Dufour, a professor of trade law at the University of Sherbrooke. Hosted by Althia Raj Some of the clips this week were sourced from: CPAC, the House of Commons, The White House, CTV, CBC, The Andrew Lawton Show, Street Sport Television Car show and PBS. “It's Political” is produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein. Sean Pattendon mixed the program. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.

As the world moves toward being energy-efficiency, consumers are changing their perspective on the materials they prefer in building and construction. Aluminum's low weight, high strength, and green attributes position it perfectly as a disruptor. Studies have shown increasing demand in the major aluminum markets and corresponding investment.   Most of the aluminum used in 2021 was recycled, over three-quarters of it! This fundamental integration with recycling makes aluminum an excellent eco-friendly option that continues to serve major markets well.   Joining us today are Chuck Johnson, CEO and president of The Aluminum Association, and Ryan Roush, COO of JW Aluminum, a leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum products. Both bring a different perspective on the aluminum market and have a wealth of information to share.   Tune in to learn about aluminum leading the way!   Topics discussed in this episode: Chuck's mission with aluminum What sets The Aluminum Association apart Discussion of a study done on the growth of the aluminum market The sustainability of aluminum in construction Four major trends contributing to the growth of aluminum The energy efficiency of aluminum Future job opportunities in the aluminum industry   Connect with Ryan: Email, and with Chuck: Email   To learn more about aluminum, go to http://www.aluminum.org (www.aluminum.org).   To hear more Construction Disruption episodes, visit us on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/construction-disruption/id1585213239 (Apple Podcasts) or https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMw9xVe_yEaU927JaM-q8-iwdPl4wsZzf (YouTube).    Connect with us on https://www.facebook.com/isaiahindustries (Facebook), https://www.instagram.com/isaiahindustries/ (Instagram), or https://www.linkedin.com/company/isaiah-industries-inc./ (LinkedIn). You will hear from three experts on the materials side of the automotive industry about their excitement of how advanced and complex materials are rapidly developing in many of today’s leading vehicles. You will also hear some of their concerns about the materials evolution in the automotive industry. Each of our panelists raise interesting points on how these new advance materials are a major benefit in the automotive industry: Jody explains how her company, Steel Market Development Institute in Southfield, Michigan, works closely with automotive companies to provide a better opportunity to deliver more performance and light weighting vehicles. Michael, of Abaris Training Inc. in Reno, Nevada, notes how the automotive industry is edging out the aerospace industry in advanced technology to make quicker and less expensive vehicles. And Doug, of the Aluminum Association’s Aluminum Transportation Group, explaines how advanced technology and new materials have played a major role in how cars have become safer and more comfortable and handled better on the road. We'll also touch on a few of their concerns in the industry – from fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions to the lack of proper training in handling these new, advanced materials for collision repair technicians, as well as the need to have these trained technicians accessible at collision repair shops in smaller, suburban communities.
