See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tariffs on steel and aluminium imports into the United States have come into effect, with no exemptions for Australia. It's a blow for the close relationship between the two nations, with the Prime Minister vowing to continue making Australia's case.
A new, 25 percent import tax on all steel and aluminium coming into the United States has taken effect, drawing swift retaliatory measures from Canada and the European Union. Donald Trump warned of a further response. Sweeping metal tariffs imposed during Trump's first term did have some positive impact on the US steel and aluminium industries but negatively affected other sectors downstream. Plus, US inflation in February cooled slightly.
US President Donald Trump's 25 percent tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminium came into effect on Wednesday, without any exemptions for the country's traditional allies. The import duties were welcomed by some American metal producers who want protection against what they believe is unfair competition. The European Union has vowed to retaliate with its own measures targeting 26-bn euros worth of US goods entering the common market. Also, fears of a recession rattle global stock markets.
US tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports have come into effect, and the EU has already retaliated with counter-tariffs. Brussels correspondent Will Denselow spoke to Corin Dann.

US President Trump signed executive orders imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into America from 4 March, granting no exemptions. On the condition of no significant exemptions, Ehsan Khoman, Head of Research – Commodities, ESG and Emerging Markets (EMEA), expects the aluminium and steel tariffs to be largely passed through to US (and less global) prices. Listen to this week's podcast wherein Ehsan contextualises what is at stake and whether copper tariffs may be the next watchpoint for global markets.
The Australian government will continue to make its case for a tariff exemption to the United States, despite a top US official saying Australia's aluminium imports are killing the US market. It comes as the White House claims Australia has broken a verbal agreement to limit its aluminium exports.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, "Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered". We get reaction from the European Steel Association. The UK and US have not signed an international agreement on artificial intelligence (A.I.) at a global summit in Paris; meanwhile, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has rebuffed a $97.4bn bid to take over the firm from a consortium of investors led by Elon Musk. And Will Bain hears whether oil giants are scaling back from renewable projects, as BP says it will "fundamentally reset" its strategy as profits dropped sharply last year, and is widely expected to say later this month that it will scale back renewables projects and increase oil and gas production.
Donald Trump says no nation will be exempt, although there's a prospect of Australia winning a rare reprieve from hefty tariffs being imposed on all steel and aluminium imports to the United States. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been on a phone call with the US president, urging him to exempt Australia from the 25 per cent import tax.
