When comparing "Big Box" auto retailers (like stores that sell a wide range of items) to auto dealerships and independent repair shops, the key differences lie in pricing, customer service, and expertise. Dealerships often offer brand-specific expertise and convenient service, but may have higher prices. Independent shops typically provide more competitive pricing and a wider range of vehicle expertise, but may not always have the same access to OEM parts as dealerships. Episode 380 – “Gandalf, Game Fest, and Getting to the End”Fred finally put a bow on Octopath Traveler II, clocking in at a hefty 76 hours. He's now stuck in that post-game limbo, unsure what to dive into next—and somewhere along the way, he saw Gandalf, which we'll unpack. Jake, meanwhile, is still going strong in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, now 31 hours deep and not letting up.Listener feedback this week was short but sweet. Big Box gave us props for our thumbnail game, and 1blktalon chimed in with a time-stamped shoutout for Jake's "Amen" moment from Episode 378, also weighing in on Jade Raymond. Appreciate the love—and the laughs. As for the news, Summer Game Fest 2025 is right around the corner. Geoff Keighley will host on June 6th, and PlayStation is officially on board as a partner. Expect big reveals, including WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, and a post-show indie showcase from Day of the Devs. Meanwhile, IO Interactive is gearing up to unveil 007 First Light during their own showcase the same day, teasing Bond's origin story with the tagline "Earn the number."CD Projekt Red is offering a first look at the tech behind The Witcher 4 at the State of Unreal on June 3rd, showing off what Unreal Engine 5 will bring to the franchise. Tango Gameworks is back in action too—thanks to KRAFTON—and already hiring for a new action project following their reboot.Kojima's Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will get the spotlight during a June 8th live event hosted by Keighley, with a gameplay demo and surprise guests promised. In less celebratory news, Borderlands 4 found itself in hot water after Randy Pitchford suggested that “real fans” would pay $80 for the game. After backlash, he walked the statement back with a public apology. Also this week, we learned that The Order 1886 was originally meant to be a trilogy—plans for The Order 1891 and 1899 were scrapped after poor reviews and the eventual closure of Ready at Dawn. A small nod lives on in Astro Bot, where Sir Galahad appears as a collectible. And finally, MindsEye continues to stir controversy. Developer Mark Gerhard blames targeted attacks and bots for the game's rocky reception. Whether that's true or not, the game launches June 10th, so we'll see for ourselves soon enough.Let's get into it.Your support goes a long way in helping us continue to create the content you love. Big box retailers faced pressure this morning, brought mostly through Target's (TGT) earnings miss and widened guidance. TJX Companies (TJX) beat its earnings but its stock didn't see much movement, possibly due to a slight dip in same-store sales. Jenny Horne takes a closer look at the reports and explains what's driving this morning's mixed response.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Many of us have places that make us feel comfortable, at peace. Perhaps it’s a bookstore or a bar. For author and UW-Eau Claire English professor David Shih, it's a place much bigger. He shared the story “The Warehouse Club” at a live storytelling event hosted by Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Wisconsin Life” and the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild. It was held on Nov. 14, 2024 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at The Lakely.
In this episode, we're joined by Deb Strougo, longtime industry veteran in the HALO sector. Deb shares her insights both as a seasoned consumer and advisor, exploring the current and future landscape of fitness. Pete and Deb dive deep into the experience and inner workings of high-end clubs like Bay Club, weighing their offerings and discussing the evolving needs of today's customer. As Deb articulates the growing importance of holistic wellness and the cultural shifts in exercise preferences, she provides a unique perspective on how fitness businesses can thrive. Listen now to learn how to navigate the ever-changing dynamics of the industry and the collaborative potential between new entrants and established players. Whether you're a fitness entrepreneur, industry insider, or just passionate about health, this conversation has a ton of valuable takeaways. With regards to empowering fitness choices and the need to provide more diverse options Deb states, "In the Pilates space for example, you're seeing a lot of women that are interested in getting more fit, but in a low impact sort of way. They're not into the whole HIIT thing. Some may have had fertility related issues, and so they are looking in other directions." Key themes discussed HALO Academy promotion & consumer insights Boutique studio vs. big class experience Bay Club's competitive edge Orange Theory franchises in big gyms Enhancing group exercise programs Innovative membership solutions in fitness Brand differentiation & daily performance Thriving versus struggling businesses insight Consulting Deborah for industry insights A few key takeaways: 1. Holistic Approach to Fitness: Deborah emphasizes the growing trend toward the holistic human being, which involves not just physical fitness but also aspects of nutrition, sleep, and overall well-being. Fitness centers are increasingly integrating these components to cater to the complete lifestyle needs of their clients. 2. Boutique vs. Big Box Gyms: Deborah discusses the advantages and challenges of boutique fitness studios compared to larger gyms. While big box gyms like Bay Clubs have extensive amenities and services, boutiques offer a personalized, intimate experience that many consumers also value. 3. Pilates Popularity: Strougo highlights the increasing demand for Pilates as people seek lower-impact, effective workout options. This trend is driven by the modality's adaptability to different fitness needs, from mobility to strengthening, making it a staple in many fitness routines. 4. Franchising Challenges: Deb and Pete also shed light on the complexities of franchising within the HALO space. Successful franchises need to balance innovation and operational consistency, and both franchisors and franchisees must work together to optimize business models and cater to local markets effectively. 5. Industry Insights and Networking: Deborah stresses the importance of leveraging industry knowledge and networking with experienced professionals when entering the fitness space. Understanding historical successes and failures can guide a new entrant or existing business in evolving effectively and avoiding common pitfalls. Click here to download transcript. Our book is: Big Box USA: The Environmental Impact of America's Biggest Retail Stores (UP of Colorado, 2024) which presents a new look at how the big box retail store has dramatically reshaped the US economy and its ecosystems in the last half century. From the rural South to the frigid North, from inside stores to ecologies far beyond, this book examines the relationships that make up one of the most visible features of late twentieth-century and early twenty-first-century American life. The rise of big box retail since the 1960s has transformed environments on both local and global scales. Almost everyone has explored the aisles of big box stores. The allure of “everyday low prices” and brightly colored products of every kind connect shoppers with a global marketplace. Contributors join a growing conversation between business and environmental history, addressing the ways American retail institutions have affected physical and cultural ecologies around the world. Essays on Walmart, Target, Cabela's, REI, and Bass Pro Shops assess the “bigness” of these superstores from “smokestacks to coat racks” and contend that their ecological impacts are not limited to the footprints of parking lots and manufacturing but also play a didactic role in educating consumers about their relationships with the environment. A model for historians seeking to bring business and environmental histories together in their analyses of merchant capital's role in the landscapes of everyday life and how it has remade human relationships with nature, Big Box USA is a must-read for students and scholars of the environment, business, sustainability, retail professionals, and a general audience. Our guest is: Dr. Rachel Gross, who is assistant professor of history at the University of Colorado Denver, where she teaches US environmental, business, and public history. She works with university and community partners to bring history into the public realm. She is the author of Shopping All the Way to the Woods: How the Outdoor Industry Sold Nature to America, and the co-editor of Big Box USA: The Environmental Impact of America's Biggest Retail Stores. On this episode of Ford News, Johnathan, and Brian start the show by digging into the fallout as the Department of Justice began to meddle in the work of the Southern District of New York and the indictment of New York Mayor Eric Adams. There were mass resignations and a myriad of letters going back and forth. It's something out of a movie, or, in this case, Trump's America. In segment two, we discuss the courts being the last crumbs of hope as our constitutional republic gets closer to collapse as DOGE continues to weave their way through every federal agency, haphazardly firing people and shutting departments down like they are Big Box stores from a bygone era. Segment three brings us to the "Ford Fact Check," where Johnathan walks us through the many lies told by Elon Musk as he dismantles our government. $50 Million for condoms? Gaza? In this week's episode of The Meeple Minded, we dive deep into the world of big box board games!
What benefits do you get when you upgrade from a $40 Big Box store rod to a Clearwater or Encounter? How much better is a Recon rod, and will you see and appreciate the performance improvements? And what are you missing out on by getting a Recon instead of a Helios? This is a common podcast question, and I've asked Shawn Combs [44:53], Orvis rod and reel designer, to walk us through the various price points of Orvis rod and how the rods differ. There is a true price/value equation in Orvis rod models, but is the difference important to you? We hope to guide you through those questions. In the Fly Box this week, we have some terrific questions. No phone calls this week so they are all e-mail questions, including: Which river types are richer in insect life, and does that affect your success with dry flies? Why is there so much shame about fishing around brown trout redds but not the same with brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout? How do you set up your leaders for striper fishing? Why don't we go through the eye of the hook twice on every knot, as we do for the Trilene Knot? Why is there so much spot burning with social media? A listener who had a life-threatening experience in a kayak gives us some great tips on being safe on the water. Any thoughts on organizing fly boxes? A listener tells us that washing CDC feathers will not let them float properly but I respectfully beg to differ. A tip from a listener on how to lessen line tangles when fishing from a pedal kayak. What is meant by "nervous water"?

It was a record-breaking holiday weekend at the box office for theaters in the U.S., with a $420 million 5-Day Thanksgiving total, which smashed 2018's previous record of $315.6 million. Lukewarm critic reviews for newcomer Moana 2 did little to dissuade families from attending in droves; by itself the animated sequel broke the record for a 5-Day Thanksgiving opening with its $221 million gross. Not to be left on the sidelines, last week's contenders Wicked and Gladiator II continued to bring in impressive numbers, grossing $117.5 million and $44 million, for second and third place, respectively. In its second weekend, Wicked also became the highest grossing movie based on a Broadway musical and claimed the third best 5-day take for any film. Barry Keoghan is set to portray Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes' Beatles movies, according to the Beatle himself. Mendes is planning to direct four biopics, each dedicated to a band member: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Starr. All of the movies will be released separately in theaters by Sony Pictures. While several stars have been rumored to be circling the splashy project, including Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn, no deals have been made with any of the cast. On The Town podcast, Dune director Denis Villeneuve spoke on why he doesn't want to direct a Star Wars film. Speaking on The Empire Strikes Back, he said “I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is the movie that I anticipated the most in my life. I saw the movie a billion times onscreen. I was traumatized by The Empire Strikes Back. I adore Star Wars. The problem is that it all derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi ... still today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a comedy for kids. … Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises. So, I'm not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like the code is very codified." Although Disney allowed Ryan Reynolds to exercise a high degree of creative control on this summer's Deadpool and Wolverine, the official script posted to Disney's FYC website has revealed the one joke that the company cut from the film. The line, spoken by Deadpool reads: "“F***! What, we can't even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse cock in my throat.” Although the majority of the line stayed, the last sentence was changed to: “I got Pinocchio jammed in my ass, and he's lying like crazy.” Disney also released a new trailer for its $200 million live-action, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot-led, reimagining of Snow White, due to hit theaters March 25, 2025. In heated competition, Netflix has optioned the rights to Callie Hart's fantasy romance BookTok phenom novel Quicksilver. Deadline hears this is a 7-figure deal. During a tech media conference, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette revealed some upcoming targeted dates for Max streaming properties, mentioning that season 3 of The White Lotus will debut in February and discussed a spring 2025 premiere for “The Last of Us” Season 2, a late 2025 launch for “Game of Thrones” prequel “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and an anticipated 2026 debut for “Euphoria” Season 3. Perrette also revealed that the anticipated Harry Potter series is currently in the casting stage for its 3 lead characters and will target a 2027 release window, rather than a 2026 one. The CW's Arrowverse of DC characters, which kicked off in 2012, has officially ended after Lois & Superman aired its finale, December 2.
Carl Quintanilla, Morgan Brennan and David Faber began the hour by breaking down another winning week for stocks, despite some volatility in the MAG7 names.
