A Grammy Award winning world renown man of harmonicas--acoustics, intellect, incredible sound telepathy, time signatures, and known to play many styles, Peter 'Madcat' Ruth joins the MMHP for a two-part series that discusses his career, his styles, his sounds, and we touch base on many of his guest sessions. He even performs for us! Here in Part 2, Madcat offers historical retrospective on bands, performances, his endorsements, and showcases that both worked and didn't work so well. He performs and gives back story to his many bands such as the Carma Quartet and Triple Play, and Madcat's Pressure Cooker. He talks about his "Anyone Can Play Harmonica" book/DVD series which was produced with the late Happy Traum, a not so great session and gig with Rory Block, and the ins-and-outs out of being a longtime disciplined performer from Ann Arbor. Sir Fred recalled a meeting with Madcat and blues legend Lazy Lester, much to Madcat's surprise. Tune into Part 2 and finish what 'ya started, NOW!
Show notes: In this 86th episode of the Drawing Funny podcast, we say so long to the 2025 spooky season, and look ahead to what's coming up for that other holiday season. I've got news about local holiday markets/events in the mid-south, and the upcoming Mid-South Cartoonists Association's "The Art Of The Game" happening in December/January at the Memphis Jewish Community Center. I'll have a few pieces in that show.I also look back at some of the Halloween related events I attended such as Monster Market and the Centennial Celebration of the 1925 movie "The Phantom Of The Opera" at the Beale Street Monster Club. I interviewed the Monster Club's co-founder, Michael Cox while at A. Schwab's on Beale and found out more about the club's origins. My wife Nicki and I also checked out author/monster club co-founder Tony Kail's Beale Street Hoodoo Museum upstairs, and had some hand dipped chocolate shakes downstairs made by Elliot Schwab. You can see pics from my visit to Beale on my HaveGeekWillTravel.com site.It was definitely another busy fall schedule, and continues to be as we head into Thanksgiving. The following week after Turkey Day the MSCA will have their monthly Dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza off Walker Avenue near the U of M. This month is their Annual Holiday Art Swap, and the deadline to turn in pieces for the next art show. Check out the MSCA website for more info and links HERE. ***SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT!!!***I need to make some Christmas cash, and if you need some unique holiday gifts be sure to check out my art sale. Details in this episode and on my art website at www.LinWorkman.com. Free delivery in the mid-south for the monsterpiece paintings, sorry- no shipping. Cash (PayPal or card) and carry, only. I've also got several sketchcards and sketchcover comics and zines at The Cellar Table Top Games & Comics out in Bartlett, TN. Lots to choose from! Thanks for "tooning in". Got a harmonica romp through the past one hundred years of America's Music this coming Friday morning. We'll be following the harmonica's journey along and across the American crossroads…one that began in the 19th century, when inexpensive German-made “mouth harps” made their way into the hands of soldiers, travelers, and rural families. Its portability and expressive bends made it a natural fit for early blues and country porch settings. From that country blues porch setting to the juke joints where electric blues, rock, soul, blues, and Americana meet and mingle. We'll be opening the vaults for some classic tracks from the likes of Little Walter, DeFord Bailey, Mickey Raphael, Sonny Boy Williamson, Charlie Musselwhite, and a couple dozen others as we celebrate the “mouth harp” for its blistering, distorted lead influencing generations of performers of all stripes. Drop in…we'd be glad to have you visit this Friday morning.
In this episode of the Doc & Jacques radio variety show, Dr. GiGi and Jacques begin by welcoming new Brookings resident and pro harmonica player/teacher Bobby Joe Holman, who shares stories from his Navy service, reflects on his extensive radio career, and speaks passionately about his lifelong love for the harmonica. He even treats listeners to a short harmonica performance! Then Doc and Jacques talk with Eric Sill and Santa from the Nature's Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights in Brookings. Eric and Santa describe the festival's breathtaking displays featuring over 3 million lights, its strong community focus, and its ongoing growth. They highlight the vital role of volunteers and the festival's dedication to supporting local causes and discuss special features like the giant Ferris wheel and iconic Santa figurine, inviting everyone to experience the warm, festive spirit of this cherished holiday tradition. It is our 100th episode at Time Signatures, and you cannot celebrate a landmark episode without a legendary Bluesman, like Billy Branch. Billy came up in Chicago, learning harp skills in all of the local clubs, battling with the likes of James Cotton, Willie Dixon, Carey Bell, and others. Billy joins Erv to talk about all of that, plus his first recorded single with Willie Dixon and the Chicago Blues Allstars, his longstanding Blues in the Schools work (some 46 years!), forming the Sons of Blues and playing as the first band to play at the legendary Rosa's Lounge. In addition to all of that, Billy is about to celebrate the release of his new album, the first on the Rosa's Lounge Record label, and he recently was named as a recipient of the prestigious Taproot Fellowship for his lifelong work in the Blues. This is a wonderful episode you do not want to miss, as it is full of great stories, and Billy is just an amazing guest, and Blues Ambassador. Let's welcome to the Georgia Songbirds Family, a singer-songwriter duo from California The Van Allen Twins. Drea and Kellen are talented multi instrumentalists, singer-songwriters that came on the show to talk about their music and more. Drea has Harmonica lessons on her YouTube Channel if you want to check them out. We talked about their style of music they call BluesGrass, we talked about their challenges, music and more. This was a fun interview for sure. We even listened to a few of their songs and they actually filled a bucket list of mine. When I started the show 6 years ago I was searching for a yodeler, and I got one on this episode. So Pull up a seat and listen in to the music and stories of The Van Allen Twins.
