A Grammy Award winning world renown man of harmonicas--acoustics, intellect, incredible sound telepathy, time signatures, and known to play many styles, Peter 'Madcat' Ruth joins the MMHP for a two-part series that discusses his career, his styles, his sounds, and we touch base on many of his guest sessions. He even performs for us!    Here in Part 2, Madcat offers historical retrospective on bands, performances, his endorsements, and showcases that both worked and didn't work so well. He performs and gives back story to his many bands such as the Carma Quartet and Triple Play, and Madcat's Pressure Cooker.  He talks about his "Anyone Can Play Harmonica" book/DVD series which was produced with the late Happy Traum, a not so great session and gig with Rory Block, and the ins-and-outs out of being a longtime disciplined performer from Ann Arbor. Got a harmonica romp through the past one hundred years of America's Music this coming Friday morning. We'll be following the harmonica's journey along and across the American crossroads…one that began in the 19th century, when inexpensive German-made “mouth harps” made their way into the hands of soldiers, travelers, and rural families. Its portability and expressive bends made it a natural fit for early blues and country porch settings. From that country blues porch setting to the juke joints where electric blues, rock, soul, blues, and Americana meet and mingle. We'll be opening the vaults for some classic tracks from the likes of Little Walter, DeFord Bailey, Mickey Raphael, Sonny Boy Williamson, Charlie Musselwhite, and a couple dozen others as we celebrate the “mouth harp” for its blistering, distorted lead influencing generations of performers of all stripes. Billy came up in Chicago, learning harp skills in all of the local clubs, battling with the likes of James Cotton, Willie Dixon, Carey Bell, and others. Billy joins Erv to talk about all of that, plus his first recorded single with Willie Dixon and the Chicago Blues Allstars, his longstanding Blues in the Schools work (some 46 years!), forming the Sons of Blues and playing as the first band to play at the legendary Rosa's Lounge.
