This weekend the final race of the triple crown unfolds in New York and the Belmont Stakes. Once those trained athletes have raced, and bred, what's next? For some - retirement. Bob Bosold visits with Tom Beatty, a volunteer at a farm called "Old Friends". It's the retirement home for over 300 horses in Georgetown, KY, that may have raced in one place or another, or are just a valuable part of someone's family. Beatty explains how the farm got its start, and who some of their famous stablemates are. Measurable rain is on the way for most of Wisconsin today and tomorrow, slowing down planting progress. Stu Muck explains where it's coming from and where it will be heaviest. Wisconsin is finally in the final leg of preparation to join the national testing campaign tracing H5N1 in dairy. Although the states been testing for the virus since last fall, becoming a part of the national USDA effort has brought challenges. Stephanie Hoff visits with WI Ag Secretary, Randy Romanski and WDATCP Administrator of the Division of Food and Recreational Health, Adam Brock. Wisconsin farmers kept rolling on spring planting chores. Pam Jahnke reports that 73% of the states corn and 66% of the soybeans were in the ground as of Sunday. Plus, about 5% of the first cutting of alfalfa hay has already been harvested. Markets are talking rain delays in the eastern corn belt. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend says the planting progress numbers intrigued traders. Meanwhile, watch cattle. A bubble burst in the market on prices last week, but consumers keep visiting the beef showcase at the retail level.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The upcoming $2,000 Pick Your Prize Handicapping Challenge at Monmouth Park on May 31 offers not only NHC seats but also Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge seats and cash prizes, emphasizing its significance. The episode highlights the chance for players to qualify for the contest via horse tourneys, reinforcing the accessibility and engagement of the racing community. The Triple Crown journey continues! On this week's VSiN At The Track, Mike and Aaron break down the Kentucky Derby, give an early preview of the Preakness Stakes after Rodriguez pulled out and discuss the impact of Sovereignty's withdrawal. Plus, we cover the Peter Pan Stakes and show you how to build a winning Superfecta ticket. This Week's Show Includes:
Lessons learned from the Kentucky Derby are applied to Preakness 2025 on this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod. A familiar voice in the tri-state area, Mike Francesa talks about his successful exacta play pairing Sovereignty and Journalism last week in the Derby. He also talks about his relationship as a horse owner with Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and the decision to leave Sovereignty out of the Preakness. He even has some thoughts about the election of Pope Leo XIV. The nation's leading workout analyst Bruno De Julio reviews some of the clues he saw in the morning that he applied to the Derby. He certainly had his successes, but he also admits to something he did not see coming. Of course he also weighs in on the scuttling of a Triple Crown opportunity in 2025. Super Screener creator Mike Shutty had a successful Derby, and he already is looking ahead with angles for the Preakness. He also handicaps Saturday's key stakes in the Belmont at Aqueduct meet, including the Grade 2 Ruffian for older fillies and mares and the Peter Pan (G3), the traditional prep for the Belmont Stakes. Co-host John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times reviews the Derby, looks ahead to the Preakness and offers his reaction to some of the listener and reader feedback about whether the Triple Crown schedule needs to be changed. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.
There's a big day of racing taking place at Belmont at the Big A (Aqueduct) on Saturday May 10, including three straight stakes races, all covered in detail this week - The Take the A Train Stakes, The Ruffian Stakes and the Peter Pan Stakes, the latter being a prep for the Belmont Stakes to be run in four weeks.
-Sovereignty (3 years old) wins the 151st Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs...Junior Alvarado,Sovereignty's jockey, wins his first Kentucky Derby. Sovereignty is trained by 71-year-old William Mott, born inMobridge, South Dakota...-Alvarado was unsure if he was going to be able to jockey a horse in the race after injuring his shoulder falling off ahorse in March. Spent time in the hospital, and the day he was released, Mott called him assuring him that he wouldbe the jockey.-Sovereignty will now have the chance, if able, to compete for the triple crown by participating in the PreaknessStakes on May 17th. “Justify” was the last horse to accomplish that feat in 2019. pWotD Episode 2924: Secretariat (horse) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 173,513 views on Sunday, 4 May 2025 our article of the day is Secretariat (horse).Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989), also known as Big Red, was a champion American thoroughbred racehorse who was the ninth winner of the American Triple Crown, setting and still holding the fastest time record in all three of its constituent races. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and his record-breaking victory in the Belmont Stakes, which he won by 31 lengths, is often considered the greatest race ever run by a thoroughbred racehorse. During his racing career, he won five Eclipse Awards, including Horse of the Year honors at ages two and three. He was nominated to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974. In the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U. S. Racehorses of the 20th Century, Secretariat was second to Man o' War.At age two, Secretariat finished fourth in his 1972 debut in a maiden race, but then won seven of his remaining eight starts, including five stakes victories. His only loss during this period was in the Champagne Stakes, where he finished first but was disqualified to second for interference. He received the Eclipse Award for champion two-year-old colt, and also was the 1972 Horse of the Year, a rare honor for a horse so young. At age three, Secretariat not only won the Triple Crown, but he also set speed records in all three races. His time in the Kentucky Derby still stands as the Churchill Downs track record for 1+1⁄4 miles, and his time in the Belmont Stakes stands as the American record for 1+1⁄2 miles on the dirt. In 2012, his actual time of 1:53 in the Preakness Stakes was recognized as a stakes record after an official review.Secretariat's win in the Gotham Stakes tied the track record for 1 mile, he set a world record in the Marlboro Cup at 1+1⁄8 miles and further proved his versatility by winning two major stakes races on turf. He lost three times that year: in the Wood Memorial, Whitney, and Woodward Stakes, but the brilliance of his nine wins made him an American icon. He won his second Horse of the Year title, plus Eclipse Awards for champion three-year-old colt and champion turf horse. At the beginning of his three-year-old year, Secretariat was syndicated for a record-breaking $6.08 million (equivalent to $43.1 million in 2024), on the condition that he be retired from racing by the end of the year. Although he sired several successful racehorses, he ultimately was most influential through his daughters' offspring, becoming the leading broodmare sire in North America in 1992. His daughters produced several notable sires, including Storm Cat, A. P. Indy, Gone West, Dehere, Summer Squall, and Chief's Crown, and through them Secretariat appears in the pedigree of many modern champions. Secretariat died in 1989 as a result of laminitis at age 19.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:07 UTC on Monday, 5 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Secretariat (horse) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

In Episode 93 of JK + 1, Jonathon Kinchen sits down with Ian Sambor, the Executive Producer of Netflix's brand-new documentary series Race for the Crown, debuting globally on April 22. Sambor, whose impressive credits include King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch and the Emmy-winning Shark Tank, joins JK to discuss the making of this highly anticipated deep dive into the high-stakes world of professional horse racing.Race for the Crown comes from the same production team that brought you Formula 1: Drive to Survive and follows owners, trainers, and jockeys through a full Grade I stakes season—culminating in the legendary Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. With unprecedented access and cinematic storytelling, the six-episode docuseries takes viewers behind the scenes of the “most exciting two minutes in sports” and far beyond, offering a raw and riveting look at what it takes to chase glory in one of the most tradition-rich and grueling sports on earth.Sambor talks with JK about the inspiration for the series, the challenges of capturing such a fast-moving and emotionally charged sport, and his hopes for how the show will shine a new light on horse racing's passionate community. They also reflect on the larger-than-life personalities within the industry—including billionaire owners like Michael Repole and Michael Iavarone—and the courage and dedication of the featured jockeys like Irad Ortiz Jr., Frankie Dettori, Javier Castellano, John Velazquez, Katie Davis, Umberto Rispoli, and many more.Together, they explore how Race for the Crown captures the essence of the sport: a mix of heart-pounding competition, generational legacy, and the relentless pursuit of one nearly impossible goal—winning the Triple Crown.
