This week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast features conversations with two people instrumental in a project to restore the rapids to the Grand River in Grand Rapids.First, Matt Chapman, executive director of Grand Rapids Whitewater, talks about the history of the river (Michigan's longest at 252 miles), why dams were installed and the why the rapids were cleared in the first place. He also talks about the unique opportunity to provide benefits to the environment, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities in a river that falls 18 feet within the city of Grand Rapids. Later, former Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, long a champion of the project, shares her recollections of 18 years of work to move the project forward and why it was so important to her. She touts the economic benefits as well as the river's role as a connector rather than a divider in the city.  Bliss also talks about the spiritual significance of the Owashtanong to the first inhabitants of the city.

After the loss to the Colorado Rapids, the KC Soccer Journal got a surprisingly candid quote out of manager Rapha Wicky on why Manu Garcia wasn't playing.“Manu was available for selection, but we had some discussions with him about his future in recent days, and so I decided it was best not to involve him in the game tonight,” said Wicky. “That's all I can say. Everything else I refer to David [Lee].”Sheena and I work through all the feelings around this move. Plus, some fan reactions. Does it make sense? Could it actually be a good thing? The first episode of season four was filled with KC easter eggs and has a lot of the world talking about Kansas City. We talked about what we loved and what it could mean for the world's understanding of KC.Sporting Kansas City had the week off, but there is plenty swirling around the team still. Mo Salah officially spurned Sporting KC in favor of signing in Turkiye. Andre Luiz didn't sign with SKC this week, at least not officially. But there are more clues that move is on the horizon. And Manu Garcia posted to Instagram in a way that was misinterpreted by some as a goodbye. In this episode, host Zach Urness talks about one of Oregon's great river trips — the Wallowa-Grande Ronde River. The float trip, which includes segments of both rivers, can be done as a day-trip or a multi-day adventure into a beautiful roadless wilderness of northeast Oregon. The river is known for being fairly friendly with rapids that are not super challenging, but it does require understanding the river, campsites and details like shuttles and water levels. In this podcast, Urness explains everything folks need to know to get on the water.
