In this week's episode, Allen and Trevor are talking to the newest member of the UKC staff, Bench Show Program Manager, Danielle Champ. They'll talk about Danielle's history, background, and all the exciting changes coming to this year's Autumn Oaks...spoiler alert, it includes puppies!
In this episode Steve sits down with his best buddies Nubbin Moore to talk about, among several life-changing subjects, Nubbin's recent election to honored lifetime membership status with the American Black and Tan Coonhound Association. The ABTCHA memberships votes one member into the exclusive group each year with the award presented the following year at Black and Tan Days. Nubbin questions his worthiness while Steve sets the record straight. Nubbin enjoys fishing as well as coon hunting and the two discuss Moore's recent trips and successes. The conversation moves to the question, when does a coon hunter recognize it's time to retire? Neither, by their own admission, has reached that point in the game but do discuss the possibility. Black and Tan fanciers will enjoy Nubbin's reflections on two of his most famous Black and Tans, Hank and Zack. Each were successful on the biggest stages in coon hunting during their primes including Hank's win overall at the 25th anniversary Autumn Oaks. When does a hunter realize he's too old to start another pup is a question the pair wrestle with in this laid back, easy-listening podcast. The talk is as smooth as Tennessee whiskey. Have a virtual “sip” and enjoy.Episode NotesWe would like to thank those who support this podcast. Special thanks to Alpha Dog Nutrition and Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode. In this week's episode, we're rerunning our most popular and most downloaded episode of all time. We're throwing it back to Ep. 67, recorded live at Autumn Oaks 2023, when Allen and Trevor sat down with very special guest Steve Fielder to discuss the history of UKC Nite Hunts. This is a fantastic episode that any student of the coonhound game should absolutely listen to! This is an episode that offers a chance for listeners to unwind, to lay aside the stresses of world news and events and to get in touch with their inner houndsman. Steve describes it as “getting at the heart of the reason I follow hounds and enjoy the houndsman lifestyle.”Recorded at a coon hunting camp in southeastern Alabama in February, Steve and longtime friend and fellow houndsman Arnold “Nubbin” Moore drill down into the reasons they enjoy the many aspects of hunting with hounds by recounting their experiences. The episode contains a wide range of subjects including White River coon hunting stories, eating raccoons, a profile of Hank, Nubbin's Autumn Oaks-winning Black and Tan coonhound of a lifetime, a story about a coon hunting horse, tales of their roles as peace keepers at competition events and saying goodbye to a longtime hunting friend. As the old friends recap their travels, which consist of thousands of miles hauling hounds and hunting together, there's something in this episode for anyone that enjoys hound hunting at the most basic of its many levels.Release Date: 03-25-20 ►Get Your Houndsman XP Info, Gear & More Here!www.HoundsmanXP.com►Become a Patron of Houndsman XP! In this week's episode I am joined by John Saunders Sr. I met John at Autumn Oaks this past year and knew quickly into our conversation I wanted to have him on the podcast. He is a wealth of knowledge and stories but what would you expect after 50 years. John's son was on episode 58 and we talk a lot more about the squirrel dogs that they have owned in that episode. John talks about how he got started coon hunting "just by chance" and has stuck with it for 50 or maybe it's 51 years now. Jason had a chance to meet TJ at Autumn Oaks this year so the two take a little time to catch up, talk some red dogs and about stewardship. Jason was able to walk a cast with TJ and came out with a couple good stories to tell. If you spend any amount of time with, or listening to TJ you can tell that these dogs and our sport bring a true joy to his life. From his day job as a high school AG teacher to a Coon hunter and everything in between TJ has a calling to include and educate those willing to listen. In this week's episode I am joined by TJ Bolin. I met TJ at Autumn Oaks and breifly learned about his female redbone Penny. Penny had won her cast in the Dual Champions hunt and won the Redbone breed in the show. After having him on I learned a lot more about redbones and the people that hunt them. TJ is quick to give credit to others that have helped him along the way. He has owned, bred, and hunted some top redbones and I can't help but think that is because of how genuine he is. When the Autumn Oaks interviews suffered a hit by unexpected electronic foes, the onsite conversation with Plott aficionado Bill Shininger and youth handler/hunter Hannah Cable had to be rescheduled after the event. What would seem to be a disappointment, lacking the on-site flavor of the crowd at Oaks, the interview turned out to be an easy-listening episode that listeners are sure to appreciate. Shininger is no newcomer to the podcast while Cable is a first-timer. The exchange runs the gamut of all things Plott dogs. Shininger is a breeder and fancier that has hitched his kennel's star to a standout stud dog named Lazarus, winner of the trifecta for Plotts with three-in-a-row victories at the prestigious Plott Days event hosted annually by the National Plott Hound Association. The name Cable is legendary in the coonhound world through the exploits of Hannah's older brother Kevin, handler and promoter of the famed Big Money-line of Treeing Walker dogs. Kevin's seventeen-year-old sister Hannah has also earned considerable acclaim but with her Plott dogs. Showing and sometimes hunting Gambler, her first Plott and Joe, brother to Shininger's stud dog Lazarus, Hannah has compiled a long list of wins, largely in Bench Show competition but not all. Shininger and Cable appear in this episode because of their demonstrated willingness to give back to the sport they love. Shininger's efforts in encouraging hunters to preserve their hounds through frozen semen and Cable's efforts to encourage and help other youth to excel in the hound sport she loves make them both worthy of your time. The inspiration and encouragement they bring is infectious. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. In this week's episode I am joined by Roger Norman of Cabin Side Kennels. Roger is a coon and bear hunter from West Virginia. I have followed Roger on Instagram for a few years and reached out ahead of Autumn Oaks. Luckily he was able to make it with the whole family and I was able to get him to sit down for a few minutes. His little boy is already obsessed with dogs at only a year old and spoiler alert he ended up with the Plott puppy Roger mentioned at the end! In this the first of the 2024 Autumn Oaks recordings, Steve is joined by Texan Sid Underwood and by Land of Lincoln coon hunter Doug Crawley. The conversations were recorded live in media center of the Kuhlman Center, headquarters for the Event Where History Is Made.Underwood had the distinction of being the last Bench Show Judge to judge Autumn Oaks in its entirety as a single judge. The event now employs two judges and as many rings in the three-day event. The old friends discuss many aspects of Autumn Oaks, of coon hunting in the State of Texas and their association as co-employees of the Field Operations Department of UKC when Steve was there.Crawley set a milestone in the UKC World Coonhound Championship that can never be replicated. His Treeing Walker Coonhound Crawley's Louise became the first-ever female hound to win the UKC World Nite Hunt Championship. Louise accomplished the feat in 1989, thirty-five years ago. Steve and Doug take a nostalgic trip back to Montgomery City, Missouri, then headquarters of John and Linda Wick's Wick Outdoor Works supply business, including accounts of the hunt that took place in the midst of a hurricane. As they contemplate the trip and all it will entail in the coming days, they take time to recall the Autumn Oaks 25th anniversary event in Jasper, Indiana in 1984, 39 years ago! Nubbin remembers well the years 1984, 1985 and 1986 when his Black and Tan Hank was declared National Grand Nite Champion of the Black and Tan breed in each of those years was overall winner in 1984. The boys talk about the upcoming trip to the White River National Wildlife Refuge in this episode and admit, with some remorse and no little trepidation that they are getting older and may be needing to seek younger hunters to join the trips going forward to assist in handling the dogs. They're not there yet but that picture is obviously coming into view. The Gone To The Dogs podcast is nothing if not a candid discussion whomever the guest may be and this one is no exception. But true to form, the boys have a good time when they get together and that's evident throughout the episode. We're betting you'll enjoy the stories and the banter in this latest account of Fielder and Moore On The Road.
In this episode Steve and Fred catch up after their brief visit at the 2023 Autumn Oaks where, true-to-form, Fred was on his way to catch up with his cast for the Saturday night hunt. Ageless it seems, Moran continues to compete with his beloved Redbones long after most hunters have retreated to the recliner but that's not Fred Moran. This episode is vintage Moran with stories, accounts of hunts recent and long past, and recollections of the good Red dogs he's had on his leash over his many years. This one is for flannel-shirt wearing, tailgate-sitting, tobacco-spitting, long-shaving- whittling good ole boys (and girls) to enjoy. Scooch up close to the fire, work that chew up just right and let 'er rip.
The episode begins with the “First Family of Autumn Oaks” consisting of Curtis Elburn and his two daughters Nikki Elburn Rorvik and Andi Elburn Emory. Curtis has attended fifty-one consecutive Autumn Oaks events dating back to 1972 and his daughters have attended thirty-eight and forty events consecutively themselves. Steve remembers the ladies as babes in strollers as their parents attended Autumn Oaks. Shortly after the interview was conducted, Andi won the prestigious National Grand Show Champion of Autumn Oaks with her Redbone Coonhound. Newcomers Shane Richard of Idaho and Esther Weimer traveled across the nation to attend their first Autumn Oaks and present an interesting interview including their first impressions of the event and an inside look at the part UKC-registered coonhounds play in their hunts for bears and mountain lions in the American West. Rounding out the episode is an entertaining visit with three young hunters, ages 13 through 15, from New York and Tennessee, that met at Autumn Oaks. It's a look at the grand old event in the eyes of the future and will be much enjoyed. This is a don't-miss episode for those that have attended Autumn Oaks for years and for those that have never been. It's all here, recorded live at the Event Where History Is Made.
