A new NASA telescope that could change the way we view the universe has been successfully launched into space.The Nancy Grace Roman telescope will eventually take up position about a million miles from earth and has the ability to explore black holes, dark energy, dark matter and discover new planets.

After decades of development, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is preparing to launch. Once in orbit, Roman will conduct the widest surveys of the universe ever attempted, probing the nature of dark energy, discovering thousands of new exoplanets, and capturing images of billions of galaxies. In this episode, we sit down with Julie McEnery, senior project scientist for Roman at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and Jason Rhodes, project scientist for Roman at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to explore what the telescope will reveal and how scientists around the world will be able to access and work with its data. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled for an early launch at the end of August. It will rest about a million miles from Earth at Lagrange point 2, where forces of gravity and motion balance out, allowing it to orbit the sun in sync with the Earth. The Roman Telescope is designed to collect masses of data that could inform questions about dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets. Jackie Townsend, project manager for the mission, joins Host Flora Lichtman to discuss the telescope's backstory, and what scientists hope it will do. Then, turning from deep space to deep oceans, Anthony Tarantino of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution joins Flora to describe the recent maintenance and recertification process for the famous Alvin deep-sea submersible. In the 1990s, scientists investigated MACHOs (Massive Compact Halo Objects), like dim stars or black holes, as dark matter candidates. However, extensive searches failed to find enough of them, reinforcing the particle-based WIMP theory. A major shift occurred in 1998 with the discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating, a phenomenon attributed to Dark Energy. Current models suggest the universe is 68.5% Dark Energy, 26.6% Dark Matter, and only 4.9% baryonic matter. Dark energy behaves like Einstein's cosmological constant (lambda), an idea he once considered his "worst mistake" but which now seems necessary. Schilling uses an empty water bottle analogy to illustrate that the vast majority of the universe's composition—both dark matter and dark energy—remains a complete mystery despite our ability to measure its effects. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the oldest light in the universe, provides a blueprint that confirms the necessity of dark matter and dark energy. To find the physical particle, researchers have engaged in the "Xenon Wars," utilizing massive underground detectors like those at Gran Sasso in Italy. These detectors wait for a dark matter particle to collide with a xenon nucleus, but they have so far produced only null results. One exception is the DAMA experiment, which claims to see a seasonal variation in detections as Earth moves through the galactic dark matter halo, though other teams have been unable to replicate this. Additionally, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station searches for antimatter that might be created by dark matter collisions in space. The lack of definitive detection in these high-tech experiments is increasingly puzzling for the scientific community. (7/8)1957

Scientists at NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, have submitted an unprecedented set of asteroid detections to the IAU Minor Planet Center, including hundreds of distant worlds beyond Neptune and 33 previously unknown near-Earth asteroids. Once fully operational in 2026, the Rubin Observatory will deliver the largest sky survey in the history of mankind, answering questions from the nature of Dark Energy to discovering potential "killer" asteroids. Prof. Juric led the definition of Rubin data products and oversees the solar system team. Prof. Juric received his PhD in astrophysical sciences from Princeton University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study and a Hubble Fellow at Harvard University. His research is in the area of data-intensive survey astronomy and AI. He developed a range of astronomical software products and techniques, including software for asteroid detection, mapping the Milky Way, novel astronomical databases, and cloud-based astronomical data analysis systems. Prof. Juric discovered what was at the time the largest known structure in the Universe (the Sloan Great Wall; with J. Richard Gott), a dwarf galaxy colliding with the Milky Way (the Virgo Overdensity; with Z. Ivezic), and over a hundred asteroids (including 22899 Alconrad, the smallest known main-belt binary asteroid; with Korado Korlevic). Sometimes it only takes an hour down the road to feel like you've stepped into a different world.
