Crawley is back, but producer Harry is away. Will they ever reunite?! Probably. But not this week. It's been a while since we last caught up with Laika Rountree, but they're back this week to chat about all sorts: lots of funnies, some Asian theatre, and more. There was also a brand-new segment: Weird Chocolate Review! This week's contender? Camel milk chocolate. Minty, salty, hints of cardamom... or is that something else?! Apparently it's a real mouth-melter. Aaaaaand on That's the Spirit, Professor Emeritus Peter Lineham joins us to discuss the Encyclical Letter Magnifica Humanitas of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence. Shabooya! Thanks very much to The Beer Spot!

Crawley eludes us once more. This time he's down with an infectious disease. But fret not, producer Harry is back for another solo Monday show. Will he be able to hold the fort? Or are we in for a three-hour trainwreck? Find out below! Big tunes all round today. Harry watched the Shayne Carter doco over the weekend, and so we heard many a tune from big Shayne! Jaycee also popped in and we chatted about NZ Music Month. Uuuugh, why can't every month be NZ Music Month?!?! Harry W's dad, Stevie W, even had a song selection. And what a banger it was! Ngā mihi nui The Beer Spot!
Guest Introduction Bill Crawley is the Founder and CEO of Advark AI. He's been an entrepreneur since childhood, has built and sold multiple companies, and now focuses on helping small business owners market with clarity—without needing to become marketers themselves. Key Discussion Themes Why marketing feels like “who can spend the most on Google” (and what to do about it) How Advark AI guides owners to choose platforms, set budgets, and adjust based on performance The “sweet spot” for ad spend—and why under-spending and over-spending both hurt Consistency vs. random spending: why “throwing extra cash into ads” doesn't work Advice that sticks: direction beats effort (and why digging harder doesn't help if there's no water) Listener Takeaway If your marketing is inconsistent, it's going to feel like a money pit—even if the channel can work. Find a reasonable spend level, stick with it long enough to learn, and measure what's actually happening so you can adjust with confidence. Mega Monday Drive this week! Laika Rountree joined us for Stage Direction. This fortnight, she was laughing, she was crying, she was touched--suffice to say, there was a bunch of good stuff to see. She also played a snippet of her interview with Suzy Eddie Izzard. What a treat! Professor Emeritus Peter Lineham's phone was broken… but then it wasn't. A miracle, perhaps?! This week's That The Spirit topic: 100 years of the Bahá'í Faith in New Zealand. We also heard a sneak peek of Oto and Jaycee's interview with Mei Semones, who'll be here in Auckland in June. Aaaaaand, we had the pleasure of speaking to Stephen Heard from Clap Clap Riot! They've got the band back together, released a new single, and are embarking on their first NZ tour in seven years! Thanks very much to The Beer Spot!
We explore our original condition, God's intervention and our new position.
This week, Laika Rountree chats to Crawley and Harry about multiple productions, such as How To Catch a Grim Reaper and Macbeth INC, and they chat to Suzy Eddie Izzard about her show at the NZ Comedy Festival, The Remix: The First 35 Years, and her upcoming show later on in the year, Hamlet.

Some tunes, another fire alarm, and the worst thing ever played on 95bFM?! With NZ Music Month and the Comedy Festival in full swing, Crawley and Harry both had packed weekends. Professor Emeritus Peter Lineham joined us for That's The Spirit. This week's discussion: Catholic social media influencers. We had another ripper song suggestion from Lance, and tried out a highly experimental new segment (also courtesy of the legend Lance): 3 Sentence Philosophy. Ngā mihi The Beer Spot!
Former Bachelorettes Clare and Michelle have been privately battling their own health issues and publicly sharing their unique and difficult journeys to find answers. They discuss with Trista why it's important for people to advocate for themselves in the doctor's office, seek out multiple medical opinions, and most importantly...trust your gut when you know something isn't right in your body. The women also discuss how seeking a medical diagnosis while being a newlywed also added another layer of complexity to both of their experiences. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is WLRN's 10th Anniversary Edition! Stay tuned for the greeting with Jocelyn Crawley, world news with Cat Bradfield, an interview with professor Gail Dines and concluding commentary from Jocelyn. The focus of this month's show is the Jeffrey Epstein case and how it is being handled within the porn-sick society we live in, featuring Gail Dines—expert, activist for women's and children's rights, and founding member of Culture Reframed. Gail recently published a review in Ms. Magazine of Virginia Roberts Giuffre's posthumous book, Nobody's Girl. https://msmagazine.com/author/gaildines/ She talks with Thistle a bit about this book and about how the porn industry has gotten its tentacles into all aspects of American society. She also, at the end of the interview, tells the story of an activist skit performed with Mary Daly at Harvard University in the 1980s. She muses that if women could do it then, we can do it again today and should in order to fortify our movement for the dignity and rights of girls and women. We did it. At the first time of asking, Cambridge United have been promoted back to League One. And we did it in the nerviest way possible, drawing 0-0 at Crewe and waiting for a few agonising minutes as Salford couldn't find the winner at Crawley that would leapfrog us. Join Matt, Tom and Jules as they relive the whole day, from pre-match nerves, a world famous beer garden, to the missed penalty, a feeling that all hope had gone, and then that moment that it was all confirmed. Packed 95bFM Drive this week! Producer Harry W completed his homemade lamp and Crawley's tried the new Hallertau 95bFM beer! We had Laika Rountree come in to tell us about the latest happenings in Auckland's live performance scene for Stage Direction. Spoiler alert: there's some great stuff out there. Professor Emeritus Peter Lineham returns for That's The Spirit, coming in strong with a discussion of fascism and yoga. Fret not, there's no need to burn your leggings or picket your local yoga studio just yet. We also welcomed Billy T Award nominated musical comedy legends Tough Tiger Fist to the studio. Ben Cleland and Matt Parker joined us to chat about their new song ‘Milk' and their upcoming shows as part of the Auckland Comedy Festival. They also gifted us each a packet of vegan Caesar salad dressing which we will both treasure deeply. Thanks to The Beer Spot!
Bill Crawley has been building businesses since he was nine years old. Over five decades as an entrepreneur, he's launched, scaled, and sold companies across consumer products, publishing, and restaurants—driven by a fascination with what makes businesses grow, regardless of industry. He completed his first exit in his mid-20s and has had four successful ones since. Just before turning 60, an age his younger self assumed would mean slowing down, Bill instead decided to tackle a problem that had frustrated him for over a decade: the chaos of digital marketing. As marketing shifted from analog to digital, success increasingly demanded mastering complex platforms, chasing algorithm changes, and burning cash just to keep pace. Even seasoned agencies were often guessing. Bill built Advark AI to cut through that confusion and give business owners the clarity and control they deserve. Zak Crawley suffered another disappointing return in the latest round of Rothesay county championship matches. Three top order challengers - Dom Sibley, Emilio Gay and Haseeb Hameed - stepped up with centuries in the last couple of days. Simon Hughes and Simon Mann run the rule over the contenders and assess their pros and cons as they try to assemble England's likely batting order for the first Test in just over a month's time. Plus - do we need DRS in county cricket? After last weekend's experiences several batsmen - including Crawley - would say definitely yes. Learn more about your ad choices. We bring you analysis of both of Newport County's defeats over the Easter weekend...Part 1 sees Rhys ask Hamid and Ed about the loss to Crawley, and then Part 2 is an Ian Street match diary from a pretty dispiriting trip to Notts County (joined by, amongst others, Dave & Iwan and Stu & Fraser). Such is our luck this season, the one bit of joyous audio - County's consolation goal - was unusable for technical reasons so it's an even glummer account than you expect.Gluttons for punishment that we are, we'll be back with another episode next weekend after the Harrogate six-pointer. In the meantime, check our website for all the pod info you need, or drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. It starts, as these things often do, with something small… something easy to dismiss.A knock. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just… there. A quiet, deliberate tap that doesn't belong to anyone in the room. And here's the uncomfortable part — in the Crawley house, that knock didn't stop.It turned into footsteps… objects shifting… doors opening when no one was near them. The kind of thing people love to roll their eyes at — until it happens in their own home and suddenly logic packs its bags and leaves.Because this wasn't one strange night or an overactive imagination after too much wine. This went on. Witnesses. Reports. People who were, frankly, not looking for attention. And if you're thinking, “Alright, so who was faking it?” — you're not alone. That's exactly where most people start. But the Crawley Poltergeist has a way of pulling you a little closer before you realise what you're standing in.Because once you strip away the exaggeration… once you look at what was actually documented…You're left with something that doesn't sit comfortably in either camp — believer or sceptic. And that's where it gets interesting. So in this episode… we're not asking if something happened in that house. We're asking a much trickier question — what on earth could have caused it?…And whether we'd recognise it if it happened to us. (SPOILER) I first begin by talking about what's on the Daily Roundup including my thoughts on Survivor and Age of Attraction. Then Clare joins me (8:56) and it's 8-9 years since I've had Clare on the podcast, but I felt this was as good as time as ever to bring her back. As I always say, everyone's got a story. And Clare shares a story today about what she's been dealing with health wise that she's telling for the first time. I did not want to make this podcast about Dale, or the Bachelorette, etc. We do get into it later on, but very briefly. That's not what today's podcast is about. The story of The Cure: a tall tale of a truly unique British band. The Cure's story is a fantastical pop fable, but their trajectory has not been one of unbroken success. Along the way, their uneven, uneasy pop odyssey has taken in fierce intra-band tensions and fall-outs, numerous line-up changes and even a bitter court case that saw original group members feuding over payments and ownership of the band's name. There has been alcoholism, substance abuse and countless long, dark nights of the soul, many of which have been translated into luscious dark-rock symphonies. From gawky teenage art-punks in Crawley to gnomic, venerable rock royalty with 30 million record sales to their name, their journey has been a scarcely believable, vivid pop hallucination. The Cure: A Perfect Dream (Gemini Books, 2025) is the tall tale of a truly unique British band. It's the story of The Cure. This fully updated edition includes a deep dive into the band's long-awaited 14th studio album released in 2024: Songs of a Lost World. Wishing you a Happy Galentine's Day season, this episode is dedicated to a thorough look at the concept of feminist love with Esmée Streachailt and Jocelyn Crawley. First up, hear Thistle deliver the podcast greeting before the world news segment with Cat Bradfield featuring stories from the Gambia, Chile, Indonesia and the United States. Next, take a listen to the interview Jocelyn did with Ms. Esmée Streachailt of MedusaRising.org, a wonderful radical feminist organization that engages and inspires young women to join the movement. Esmée and Jocelyn explore patriarchal concepts of love in order to highlight the need for a radical feminist love that uproots and heals. Finally, take a deep dive into the concept of feminist love with Jocelyn's commentary she leaves us with after the interview. Stay tuned 'til the very end for Margaret's explanation of this month's cover art reprinted below. From WLRN's resident graphic designer, Margaret: "I started with the idea of light representing love. Light flowing out of our selves - connecting us. I found a photo of our sun I had captured which showed rays radiating out. I reused some silhouettes I had created for earlier editions, and arranged them to show women in a circle around the source of light, and love, holding hands. For the background I added a NASA image of stars that I altered with colors. Stars across the universe, like our sun, some with the potential for light and love. But it is our earth, and each other which constellates our reality. It is our sun which is the source of light that allows us to live, and to love. It is our selves which bring light and love to each other. Blessed be!"

The newly-appointed British ambassador to the United States, Sir Christian Turner, is a career diplomat whose experience spans almost three decades. He was about to take up the role of the UK's ambassador at the UN but after Lord Mandelson was abruptly pulled from his ambassadorial role in the US late last year, Sir Keir Starmer diverted Turner to replace him. Born in Crawley in 1972, Turner attended the prestigious Marlborough College, before pursuing English literature at the University of Manchester, and later a doctorate at York. After flirting with documentary-making, he pivoted to public service, entering the Cabinet Office in the late nineties. He has closely advised several prime ministers, including Theresa May with whom colleagues say he shared his love of card games. After an initial posting to Washington ended in 2006, his career has flourished at the foreign office. Mark Coles finds out more about the UK's new man in DC, as he prepares to navigate ties with the Trump administration in a delicate moment for the so-called ‘special relationship'.Contributors:Lord Peter Ricketts, former National Security Adviser Sir Simon Fraser, former Permanent Under-Secretary of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and current chair of Chatham House.
