A princess born to the Thuringian royal house. A captive in war, forced to marry the Frankish king who killed her family. A queen, who renounced her position, received consecration as a deaconess, and took monastic vows. A religious leader, who acquired a fragment of the Cross of the Crucifixion for her convent of Holy Cross in Poitiers. And, lastly, a saint, remembered for her healings, exorcisms, and extreme self-mortification. Such was Radegund, a woman who lived through an era defined by headlong change. Honored as a "mother" by subsequent Frankish kings and as a holy woman by her nuns and devotees, Radegund enjoyed a reputation for righteousness that spread throughout the whole of medieval Europe, with later queens emulating her pious achievements. For generations, she defined medieval queenship, female monastic practice, and the expectations associated with holy women. Today, she is often envisioned as a pan-European saint. Radegund: The Trials and Triumphs of a Merovingian Queen (Oxford University Press, 2023) by Dr. E. T. Dailey presents a new interpretation of this remarkable woman, examining her vibrant life and legacy. Dr. Dailey shows how she succeeded in establishing a place for herself within this difficult and dangerous world, despite the trials she faced. He also demonstrates how Radegund achieved a position of prominence as a woman in a foreign land without resorting to the violence and intrigue that characterized the lives of other prominent women during this period. Based on a wealth of English, French, and German scholarship, this book will equip experts and lay readers with a concise, authoritative, and accessible portrait of Radegund. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This time round, I'm joined by Paul Million, a seasoned landlord and developer, to discuss various topics, including Paul's background in property investment, his portfolio of over 80 properties, and his experience with commercial conversions and HMOs. We delve into a specific project Paul worked on, an 8-bed scheme in Darlington, and the challenges he faced with planning. Paul shares his decision-making process for prioritising projects and his commitment to delivering high-quality finishes. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul has a knack for creative deals and has used various strategies such as deferred considerations, purchase lease options, and handshakes to acquire properties. Paul has faced challenges with planning permission, particularly with issues like parking and nutrient neutrality, but has successfully navigated through them by appealing and finding alternative solutions. Paul prioritises projects based on factors such as ROI, demand in the area, and the potential for success. He also considers the expertise and capabilities of his team and partners. Delivering high-quality finishes in his projects has allowed him to achieve higher rental rates and stand out in the market. He values attention to detail and takes pride in the aesthetics of his properties. BEST MOMENTS "Nutrient neutrality is certain, I think it's about 74 or 76 local planning authorities around the country... It's so utterly no common sense frustrating for developers." "I had the former creative director of Malmaison Hotels around at this 8-bed HMO the other day... He said, you know what, in 17 years of developing hotels, I've never seen a finish quite so good as what you're getting here." "I've got a 10,000 square foot, beautiful stone built school and maternity hospital in Bishop Auckland... You know, Jonathan Ruffer had just spent 200 million pounds of his own money in the town centre. It was up and coming." "I'm saying to my barrister, I'm about to do a lot of PR, I'm a bit of a PR person, you know, I think we need to tell the world what's happening here." Usually when people vote on ballot measures about transit, the transit agency and supporters want the measure to pass. Not in Phoenix in 2019.That ballot measure would have literally derailed bringing light rail--any rail--to Phoenix forever. Then Valley Metro CEO Scott Smith rallied support throughout Mariposa County and discovered there was overwhelming support for transit and light rail. So much support that the ballot measure was defeated by a landslide. But we start this episode with a somber anniversary, 60 years ago today John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. In a special segment, Paul and our guest Scott Smith reflect on JFK's legacy and call to service. In our feature interview, Paul Comfort talks with the former CEO of Valley Metro (https://www.valleymetro.org/) Scott Smith about that ballot measure, as well as his time as Mayor of Mesa, AZ, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and his run for Governor of Arizona.Paul and Scott talk about the massive investment in light rail in Phoenix and how it ties into the rest of the transit system run by Valley Metro. Scott gives his vision for what LTR means to communities and how rising costs hamper transit projects across North America.Next week we stay in Phoenix with an interview with the current CEO of Valley Metro, Jessica Mefford-Miller to bring us up to speed on the LRT project and a unique car-free community outside Tempe, AZ.We wrap this episode with Elea Carey and our editor Tris Hussey talking about practical tips for agencies facing tough ballot measures in the future. If you have a question or comment you can email us at info@transitunplugged.com00:00 Introduction from host and producer Paul Comfort00:54 Remembering JFK and the Call to Public Service01:24 Reflecting on the legacy of John F. I hope you enjoy the show today surround cultivating more confidence in your day to day life.If you do find value in the show, learn something, get inspired, or laugh I ask that you leave us a rating and review. When I was growing up I was bullied for many years, almost daily. It was a harrowing experience that helped shape me into the man I am today, and I wouldn't change a thing about it.It drove me to find the thing I still use to this day as solace from the chaos of life, the weight room.Once I found the weights I realized I could actually overcome the shit in my way. Lifting the weights, challenging myself to keep showing up, and fucking doing the work showed me what growth was. I gained confidence to stand up for myself, I understood discipline and commitment in a real way.The simple act of taking my training seriously led me to develop new friendships, ask for what I want in life, and have the persistence to get it.My hope is that all young men who are lost or confused or bullied, get the opportunity to be challenged physically to understand the mental benefits that come along with overcoming the challenge. For me it was the weight room and getting stronger. Building muscle and physical capability will work wonders for a young man full of doubt and fear. The skill of persistence is one that can be applied for the rest of their lives.Support the showUntil next time, go get uncomfortable.Schedule a free strategy call with us at EnlightenedAthlete.com to learn how we can help you remotely with exercise & movement programs, stress management, breathwork, and nutrition coaching!Connect with us by shooting us an email at info@enlightenedathlete.comFind Shae on Facebook HEREFind us on Instagram HEREFind us on twitter HERE
