Dr. Tan discusses the main types of dementia, the importance of early diagnosis, and how dementia varies from age-related cognitive decline. They also dive into the steps that people can take now to help strengthen their minds and things to do to help assist those you love who you may suspect have dementia or have been diagnosed.      Key Takeaways: Currently, about 7.5 million people are diagnosed with dementia. That number is likely twice that, as about 50% with dementia are living with it unaware of the diagnosis until the late stages.  There are around 100 types of dementia - the most common ones are Alzheimer's Disease, vascular dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.  Memory and other cognitive functions do change as we get older. Divided attention and working memory do decline as we age, and that is a normal part of aging.  Different types of dementia are caused by different pathologies. As such, the treatment and prognosis will be different.  A dementia diagnosis does not always mean that you have to quit your job. El viernes pasado Uber cumplió 11 años operando en Costa Rica. Once. La plataforma comenzó a ofrecer viajes oficialmente a las 4 de la tarde del 21 de agosto de 2015, aunque para entonces la Fuerza Roja ya había protestado preventivamente contra su llegada. No sirvió de mucho. Dos años después, en agosto del 2017, escribí aquí mismo que seguíamos “sentados en la MISMA galleta del día 1”, propuse que el logo de Uber fuera declarado nuevo escudo de la República Tropical del Cangrejo y pregunté: “¿Tan complicado es proponer una solución viable a un problema que no se va a ir por sí solo?”. Bueno. No se fue por sí solo. Tampoco lo resolvimos.

Un hombre sano que puede atender los trabajos comunes de la vida, y que va a sus tareas día tras día con espíritu alegre y con una vigorosa corriente de sangre que fluye por sus venas, no les llama la atención a todas las personas con quienes se encuentra, sobre la buena salud de que disfruta. La salud y el vigor son condiciones naturales de su vida, y por lo tanto apenas tiene conciencia de que está gozando de tan rico don. Tal ocurre con el hombre verdaderamente justo. Es inconsciente de su bondad y piedad. Los principios religiosos han llegado a ser la fuente de su vida y su conducta, y es tan natural para él llevar los frutos del Espíritu, como es para la higuera producir higos, o para el rosal dar rosas. Su naturaleza está tan completamente imbuida del amor por Dios y sus semejantes, que hace las obras de Cristo con un corazón voluntario. Todos los que entran en la esfera de su influencia perciben la hermosura y la fragancia de la vida cristiana, mientras que él mismo es inconsciente de ella, puesto que está en armonía con sus hábitos y sus inclinaciones. Ora por luz divina, y le gusta vivir en armonía con esa luz. Su comida y su bebida es hacer la voluntad de su Padre celestial. Su vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios; sin embargo no se jacta de esto, ni parece consciente de ello. Dios acepta al hombre humilde que sigue de cerca en los pasos del Maestro. Los ángeles son atraídos a él, y a ellos les agrada detenerse a lo largo de su senda. Pueden ser pasados por alto como indignos de que se les dedique atención por aquellos que pretenden haber logrado exaltadas conquistas, y que se deleitan en hacer prominentes sus buenas obras; pero los ángeles celestiales se inclinan con amor sobre ellos y son como muro de fuego que los circunda (La edificación del carácter, pp. 11, 12). Los que han sido santificados por la verdad darán evidencias de que esta ha producido una reforma en sus vidas, y que los está preparando para ser trasladados al mundo celestial. Pero mientras el orgullo, la envidia y las malas sospechas predominen en la vida, Cristo no controlará el corazón. Su amor no estará en el alma. En la vida de los que participan de la naturaleza divina se manifiesta una crucifixión del altivo espíritu de suficiencia que conduce a la exaltación propia. En su lugar mora el Espíritu de Cristo y aparecen los frutos del Espíritu en la vida. Al tener la actitud de Cristo, sus seguidores revelan las virtudes de su carácter. Nada menos que esto requerirá Dios para aceptar a los seres humanos. Nada menos que esto les dará la pureza y el carácter santo que deben tener los que sean admitidos en el cielo. Tan pronto como alguien se vista de Cristo, una evidencia del cambio producido en él se manifestará en el espíritu, las palabras y los hechos. Una atmósfera celestial envolverá el alma, porque Cristo morará en ella (Cada día con Dios, 19 de abril, p. 116).

Men with non-obstructive azoospermia may undergo microscopic testicular sperm extraction, or mTESE, without knowing whether sperm will be found. Kun Tan, Ph.D., of UC San Diego explains how molecular semen analysis could provide a noninvasive way to predict the procedure's outcome. The assay uses stage-specific germ cell markers identified through single-cell RNA sequencing, then measures those markers in semen with qPCR. Because semen contains germ cells from different stages of sperm development, their molecular signals may reflect what is happening inside the testes. Tan shows how the assay predicts whether sperm retrieval was successful and can identify where sperm development may be blocked. The research could help couples planning IVF or ICSI avoid unnecessary surgery, reduce financial and emotional burdens, and receive more detailed information about male infertility before treatment. Back in 1926, a study revealed severe pollution: only three fish were found in a 42-mile stretch of river between the Twin Cities and Hastings. The findings confirmed what residents already feared: the Mississippi was dead. But that study also sparked a century of collective action to restore and protect this vital waterway.  This year, a growing movement in the Twin Cities called Sacred Water Shared Future is honoring that legacy. Through community gatherings, storytelling, education, and conservation, the campaign celebrates the river's central role in our region while acknowledging its deep history, sacredness, and resilience. Portlander Aliyah Tan recently won first place at the National Yo-Yo Contest in Las Vegas. It was the first time Tan took the spot spot since she started competing at nationals in 2014. Tan’s winning routine, set to music by the British rock band The Last Dinner Party, featured three minutes of elaborate string tricks between two yo-yos. She now heads to the World Yo-Yo Contest in Himeji, Japan, next month.    Tan joins us in the studio to talk about her elaborate yo-yo routines and what she loves about it.

This week's episode of The MacRumors Show covers OpenAI's move into hardware and the trade secret lawsuit Apple filed against the company earlier this month.Apple sued OpenAI in the Northern District of California on July 10, alleging a months-long scheme to obtain confidential information about unreleased products. The complaint centers on OpenAI chief hardware officer Tang Tan, a 24-year Apple veteran who previously led iPhone product design, and former Apple electrical engineer Chang Liu. Apple claims Tan coached recruits on evading its exit-interview security procedures and told at least one employee to bring hardware components to an interview, and that OpenAI persuaded a supplier to apply a proprietary metal-finishing technique to an OpenAI device by falsely stating it had Apple's permission. The filing describes OpenAI's hardware business as "rotten to its core."The suit follows a souring of the 2024 partnership that brought ChatGPT to Siri, with OpenAI itself weighing legal options against Apple in May. More than 400 former Apple employees now work at OpenAI, including Vision Products Group leader Paul Meade, and former design chief Jony Ive leads design on the hardware lineup through LoveFrom after OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition of his startup io Products. Apple has countered with retention bonuses of up to $400,000and has now sent legal preservation letters to around 40 former employees, suggesting it believes the alleged misappropriation goes beyond those named. OpenAI says it has "no interest in other companies' trade secrets."Bloomberg's Mark Gurman argues the case is already causing damage ahead of any ruling, deterring Apple engineers from interviewing at OpenAI and making Asian suppliers wary of deepening ties with the company. Ive is not named in the complaint, which Gurman believes was deliberate given Apple's relationship with io Products investor Laurene Powell Jobs.OpenAI's first device, teased for months by Ive and CEO Sam Altman, is believed to be portable, screenless smart speakerthat is now expected in early 2027 at $200 to $300. Powered by ChatGPT and GPT-Live, it has a rechargeable battery so it can be carried between rooms, a camera for understanding its surroundings, and motorized elements that move on their own to give a sense that the device is alive. OpenAI reportedly does not regard the HomePod or HomePod mini as comparable, and people familiar with the project told Bloomberg the device is unlike anything Apple sells, making infringement unlikely. Apple's own smart home hub is the closest analogue.Further out, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that OpenAI is developing an "AI agent phone" built around a continuous, context-aware interface rather than individual apps, with the company controlling both the operating system and the hardware. Kuo has since revised his mass production expectation from 2028 to the first half of 2027, projecting combined 2027 and 2028 shipments of around 30 million units. I wanted to share some important health information about plastic containers. New research shows that tiny pieces of plastic — called microplastics — may be getting into our bodies more than most people realize. What Are Microplastics? Microplastics are very small plastic pieces, usually smaller than a pencil eraser. They break off from larger plastics over time. Scientists have found these particles in human blood, lungs, liver, and even in unborn babies. This means most people are already being exposed. How Do They Get Into Our Bodies? Plastic food and drink containers are one of the main sources. When plastic containers get scratched, worn out, or heated up, they can release tiny particles into your food or drink. Bottled water and packaged foods are also common sources. Plastics also contain added chemicals — like phthalates and bisphenols — that can leak into what you eat and drink. Why Does It Matter? Scientists are still learning how harmful microplastics really are, but early studies suggest they may cause inflammation, cell damage, and problems with the immune system. Some research also points to possible links with heart disease and reproductive health. Most experts agree that more studies are needed before we fully understand the risks. What Can You Do? The good news is there are simple steps you can take to lower your exposure: Switch to glass, stainless steel, or ceramic containers when you can Never microwave food in plastic — heat causes plastic to release more particles and chemicals Use a reusable stainless - steel water bottle instead of single - use plastic bottles Cut back on bottled water Try to buy food with less plastic packaging Throw away old or scratched plastic containers Dust and vacuum your home regularly — microplastics can float in the air too You probably can't avoid microplastics completely, but these small changes can make a real difference while scientists continue to study the long - term effects."

GLP-1s have taken the country by storm. Patients are losing and keeping off weight at levels previously only seen through bariatric surgery. Research trials have shown the drugs to be effective at reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death. They protect the kidneys, reduce sleep apnea, and treat fatty liver and peripheral artery disease – all while being studied for a laundry-list of additional indications. The drugs originally designed for glucose control in diabetes are transforming lives — and raising big social questions. Our guest on this episode is Dr. Marilyn Tan, clinical professor of medicine at Stanford University and chief of the Endocrine Clinic at Stanford Health Care. Dr. Tan focuses on diabetes management in both her clinical practice and research, and she is on the front lines of using GLP1-1s in patient care.Over the course of our conversation, Dr. Tan provides a brief history of the development of GLP-1s and describes just how large a leap forward these medications are in weight management. We discuss the patient experience of being on GLP-1s for weight loss – and the stunningly wide array of other uses for the drug beyond weight loss and diabetes.
