Screamin' Jay Hawkins released “I Put a Spell on You” in 1956 on Okeh Records. Elvis Presley released “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog,” transforming popular music—and youth culture—almost overnight. The song that would define him was never meant to be a novelty. Hawkins later claimed he recorded it while blackout drunk, so intoxicated that he remembered nothing of the session. The record failed on its initial release, but when it caught on years later, it transformed Hawkins from a struggling musician into a cult figure. “I Put a Spell on You” has been covered countless times and featured in films released decades after its debut. The artists and movies mentioned in this story are real. The song's cultural afterlife is long, strange, and very well documented. But were Hawkins's voodoo trappings merely theatrics, or was there something more sinister behind them? Of course it was all for show—almost certainly. Still, the idea that it might not have been was enough to send several fictional possibilities leaping out of the coffin that is this author's brain. Gary Knapp says he's married to the prettiest girl in Big Scary, West Virginia.   Steve calls him the Will Rogers of the Appalachians.  Bear hunters remember him as an effective president and spokes person for the West Virginia Bear Hunter's Association.   Part woodsman, mountaineer and houndsman, Knapp never fails to entertain with his stories and likewise, never fails to inspire with his dedication to keeping the sport of hound hunting alive for future generations. Knapp believes upcoming changes to West Virginia laws concerning hunting over bait will be detrimental to the bear population.  Steve tends to take the middle ground on the issue but the conversation is no less important to anyone that is concerned with the continuance of black bear hunting in the Mountain State as it reveals all sides of the issue. The parallels in age between the book's Billy Coleman and Brantley Whittle, Coleman is ten when the story begins and Whittle is ten now, open the door for an interesting discussion on the mindset of boys that age as they enter the sport for the first time. This week Steve entertains a trio of coon hunters from Ohio that have become some of the most recognizable and respected hunters in game as breeders, trainers and successful competitors. The Dunlap brothers, Chuck and Don, were born in the adjoining county of Fayette in West Virginia, next door to Raleigh County where Steve was born. Their family migrated to central Ohio where the Dunlaps established themselves as young me to be serious coon hunters. Chuck's son Coleton, affectionately known as Coonman, has followed in his dad's and his uncle's footsteps, earning a respected name for himself as well. Chuck formed his reputation as a successful handler in the early days of his career, the mid 1980s, by handling a famous English stud dog named GRNITECH Baron's Blue Reb, known far and wide as Lumis. Lumis, a crossbred Treeing Walker hound by today's standards, was registered as English. He was owned by Carl Carroll of Crestline, Ohio and Roger W. Daron of Plymouth, Ohio, and handled by Chuck Dunlap. The conversation moves from Lumis to the Buck Creek Treeing Walker hounds for which the Dunlaps are well-known today. Hounds like two-time AKC World Champion Buck Creek Mr. Smith, Buck Creek Crowson and Buck Creek Homer, as well as others, fill the episode. This is a story of one family's love for coon hunting and for each other. It is well worth your time. In this episode Steve is joined by longtime friend David McKee.  The conversation begins with a recap of McKee's recent heart surgery from which he is recovering nicely.  The friends talk about the upcoming Grand American Coon Hunt which McKee manages as President of the Grand American Coon Hunter's Association.  Other hats worn by McKee include President of the South Carolina Coon Hunters Association and AKC Field Representative.   McKee discussed the addition of online entries for the prestigious Grand American event that dates back to 1965.   McKee and Steve served the American Kennel Club together when Fielder was there.  The pals enjoy reminiscing about the achievements their team consisting of Jerry Moll, Jimmy Phillips, Lyndell Price, Caroline Murphy and McKee accomplished, including many innovations that are in practice with other registries today.
