The discussion covers common and often misunderstood UKC rules, including whether dogs move up in tree position when another dog leaves, how dogs are scored when they come into a tree after the judge arrives, split-tree situations, and how off-game rules apply in champion casts. They also explain the reasoning and intent behind several long-standing rules, share personal experiences and mistakes they've made while judging or handling dogs, and discuss new UKC event options such as double-header bench shows, water races, and field trials. A major piece of legislation could have serious consequences for hunters, gun dog owners, and the future of dog training. In this episode of the Upduck Podcast, Tyler is joined by Chris Ingram of the United Kennel Club (UKC) to break down the controversial Greyhound Protection Act and its inclusion in the Farm Bill. While intended to target commercial greyhound racing, the bill's broad language may extend far beyond that—potentially impacting hunting with dogs, field trials, hunt tests, and training with live birds. Drawing from the latest update and announcement released by UKC, we unpack why this language is raising concern across the hunting and dog training communities. We cover: What the Farm Bill is and why it matters to hunters How this legislation could affect retrievers, pointers, upland dogs, and waterfowl hunting The potential risks to gun dog training, UKC events, and conservation practices Why groups like Sportsmen's Alliance are sounding the alarm How you can take action in under 60 seconds using the Sportsmen's Alliance tools Take action & learn more: UKC announcement Sportsmen's Alliance action center: House of Representatives & Senate If you hunt, train dogs, or care about the future of hunting and conservation, this is one you need to pay attention to. It's old home week on the Gone to the Dogs podcast as Steve connects with his longtime friend and former boss, Larry Meeks. Meeks was the owner and served as CEO for Professional Kennel Club for thirteen years following his purchase of the popular coonhound registry in the fall of 1997. Fielder joined the organization in June of 1998 and served as its Senior Vice President through November of 2004. Conversation flows freely as Fielder urges Meeks to recall his meager upbringing in and around the Terre Haute, Indiana area. It's a Horatio Alger story of a kid raised by a single parent, his dad, that was largely left to his own devices until he discovered his affinity to all things involving trucks. Meeks and his son Jeremy own and operate Gibco Motor Express, one of the nation's top commodity haulers that haul, in Meeks' words, everything from coal to bread. Meeks coon hunting background and an early affiliation with PKC led him to purchase the registry and catapult it into a thriving business in his 13-year tenure. He and Fielder relive the days and nights at the Tennis Center at Ken Lake State Park in West Kentucky where the Super Stakes and World Hunt were held back-to-back in a ten-day coon hunting marathon. Stories, some that include an inside look at the workings of a major coon hunting organization, abound in this entertaining episode. Enjoy. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. This Week on the UKC Hunting Ops Podcast... The conversation continues on UNDISPUTED as Allen sits back down with Todd Morgan, former Manager of UKC's Beagle Programs from 1996–2008. After helping grow an already established program into one of UKC's most supported and popular, Todd brings decades of perspective - and plenty of stories - to the table. In this episode, the UNDISPUTED format keeps flipping the script as Todd weighs in on a new round of categories that go beyond the hounds themselves. This week, they're discussing: Most Influential Breeders Best Hunt Judges "Sit & Spit"...our personal favorite segment Influential Clubs This marks another first for UNDISPUTED, continuing the series' expansion into non-hound categories and shining a spotlight on the people and clubs that have shaped the sport behind the scenes. Insightful, opinionated, and rooted in experience, this is classic UNDISPUTED with a fresh twist. This Week on the UKC Hunting Ops Podcast...we're flipping the UNDISPUTED script on its head. For this special edition, we're joined by Todd Morgan, former manager of UKC's Beagle Programs from 1996–2008. During his tenure, Todd took over an already established program and helped expand its reach, support, and popularity - leaving a lasting impact that's still felt today. But instead of ranking his top hounds, Todd takes UNDISPUTED in a brand-new direction. In the first-ever episode to move beyond dogs, Todd weighs in on three powerful categories: Most Influential People Best Handlers Unsung Heroes Drawing from decades of experience in the sport, Todd offers thoughtful - and occasionally bold - perspectives on the people who shaped competition, elevated the game, and quietly kept things moving behind the scenes. If you've enjoyed past episodes of UNDISPUTED, this one brings the same passion and insight with a fresh twist you won't want to miss. Episode 219 of The Adventure Podcast features adventure journalist and research scientist, Ash Routen. Ash has written for Explorers Web, Nat Geo, Outside, The Guardian, Sidetracked, Red Bull, and UKC, among many others. This episode is a thoughtful and refreshingly critical debate of sorts. Matt and Ash dive into the evolving world of adventure to ask difficult questions about the expeditions of today. What still counts as pioneering? What has become routine? How should adventure be reported and celebrated in an era where almost anyone can step into the outdoors? They explore the complexity of modern expedition culture, from Everest tourism to ocean rowing, from ethnicity and gender representation to the role of guiding and commercialisation. They tackle the tension between personal achievement and genuine exploration, reflect on how the public engages with stories of risk, endurance and “firsts", and most importantly, discuss why critical voices are needed in adventure journalism. They also shine a light on some lesser known adventures and adventurers. Its a deep dive into ethics, meaning, media, and what progress looks like. For extra insights from the worlds of adventure, exploration and the natural world, you can find The Adventure Podcast+ community on Substack. You can also follow along and join in on Instagram @theadventurepodcast.Chapter Breakdown:Matt sets the scene inside the Expedition Reports Room and explains why he has wanted to interview Ash for years.Ash outlines why adventure is flourishing publicly, yet diluted at the cutting edge. They discuss why criticism isn't about tearing people down, but about clarity around what moves adventure forward.Ash argues that adventure lacks critical analysis compared to politics and sport, and explains why objectivity is essential.A deep look at decolonising adventure: class, ethnicity, gender, and why equal reporting isn't always the same as equal achievement.Matt and Ash explore why some achievements gain headlines while more technical, groundbreaking climbs go unnoticed.Ash describes his criteria for covering expeditions: difficulty, remoteness, logistics, and why lesser-known stories matter. Why feats like Everest climbs or Atlantic rows no longer awe the way they once did.Matt questions the value of guided “fast-track” climbing and why apprenticeship and experience still matter.Ash reflects on climbing heroes, style, and the emotional contrast between historic firsts and today's model of adventure.A discussion on media digestion- why technical nuance gets lost and why bold headlines win.Ash and Matt unpack how accidents and viral stories distort public understanding of adventure culture. They discuss responsibility, storytelling, and how the community can protect authenticity moving forward.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. For the first episode of the year, I'm kicking it off with another story of someone who got a pointing dog as a pet and then decided to get into hunting later. In this episode of Tales of Accidental Bird Dogs, I sit down with Jeff Beck, whose journey into the bird dog world started with one goal: finding an active dog he could train and do fun things with. Jeff's first dog, a GSP named Jinx, was originally meant to be a versatile companion—obedience work, UKC shed dog competitions, and staying busy. But everything changed when he took her to a pro trainer for some bird exposure. The moment he saw her lock up on point, he was hooked. Fast forward to today, and Jeff is deep in the bird dog life. He now owns five dogs (four of them GSPs), runs hunt tests with his kids, guides, maintains a serious pigeon coop, and operates a small obedience training business. What started as "just wanting a dog to train" has turned into a full-blown family lifestyle centered around dogs, birds, and learning together. You can get in touch with Jeff on Facebook at Point Perfect K9 Academy. -- The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and part of the HerUpland Podcast Network.
This week on the UKC Hunting Ops Podcast... Allen continues his conversation with legendary champion beagler Roy Swafford in Part Two of their in-depth sit-down of UNDISPUTED. Roy has been part of the UKC Beagle Program since day one, winning nearly every major UKC event along the way, including the Nationals twice—and making history as the winner of the very first UKC Beagle Nationals. He's also served the sport beyond the field, spending time managing the UKC Beagle Program and working as a Field Representative for more than a decade. In this episode, Roy turns the focus to the dog that stands above the rest - his number one dog of all time. He shares what set this hound apart, the moments that defined their partnership, and why this dog earned a permanent place at the top of his list. It's a reflective, story-filled conversation that captures the heart of beagling and the bond between a hunter and a truly special dog. In this episode Steve talks with North Carolina's Mark Miller.Mark is a veteran raccoon hunter that has long been devoted to the Treeing Walker breed. Mark's Walker hound Dreamer was voted into the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association's Hall of Fame as a coonhound. Through Miller's association with North Carolina State Trooper Brad Hyatt who runs Plott dogs on bears, he became interested in Plotts, North Carolina's official state dog. How does a houndsman devoted to a given breed, especially on that has been particularly successful with that breed, make the decision to try another breed, moving from the most popular among United Kennel Club's seven coonhound breeds to a breed that has the fewest dogs in the registry? This episode tells the story in detail including a discussion on the differences in the two breeds and why Miller was persuaded to switch. If you're new to the bird dog world, one of the first big questions you'll face is: What should I do with my dog? In this episode, I break down the main types of pointing dog events — hunt tests, field trials, and versatile dog tests — and talk about what makes each one unique. We'll cover the organizations behind these events, what kinds of dogs are eligible, and how to decide which might be the best fit for you and your pup. I'll also share a few things to think about when choosing where to start, like what kind of training you enjoy, your dog's natural strengths and weaknesses, and how much you like competition. Whether you're hoping to earn titles, join a supportive training community, or just give your dog a fun new challenge, this episode will help you find your starting point in the world of pointing dog events. UKC announced recently that it will no longer publish their house organ Coonhound Bloodlines after the first of the year. The episode also contains a White River Refuge 2025 preview, a letter from old friend Bubba Back Home, a report on Ghost the wonder dog and a congratulatory message to the brand new UKC World Champions. The episode concludes with a tutorial on coon skinning for those wishing to take a Foxfire-type approach to coon hunting the way Deddy did it. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. In this episode Steve flies solo to recap a recent three-day trip to Indiana to pick up a new puppy. While in Richmond, scene of his recent trip to Autumn Oaks, our host takes a trip out to the Wayne County Coon Hunter's Association club house, a massive structure for its type, to visit with the club that has hosted thirty-three of the Events Where History Is Made since Steve brought the UKC event to Richmond in 1992. Pup training advice constitutes the remainder of the episode laced with vignettes from prior UKC World Championships, an event that concluded its 47th year with the competition of this year's finals just two days prior to the airing of this podcast. Hound people struggling with training a young hound will appreciate Steve's experiences gained in more than 70 years with hounds. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. In this week's episode I am joined by my friend Perry Lambert. Perry is a lifelong leopard cur/hound hunter. We talk about the name, the breed and the transition to UKC's 7th coonhound breed. Perry was heavily involed with that transition and was the president of the breed association when that happened. Perry is a wealth of knowledge and this only covers a fraction of what he has experienced and knows about the breed. Within the world of purebred coonhounds there exists seven recognized breeds, each with a national association that affiliates with the major coonhound registry, United Kennel Club. These associations exist not only to steer the future of the individual breeds within the registry, but also as a fraternity, or sorority as the case may be, of individuals devoted to the breed. None is more tightknit than the American Black and Tan Coonhound Association, Our guest in this episode, Matt Wachter of Gardendale, Ala., is a young man that chose the Black and Tan Breed early on in his coon hunting career and has benefited greatly from the mentors he has gained through his choice of breeds. One such mentor and personal friend is the late Doug Moore of Mt. Olive, Alabama.Moore recently passed at the age of 82.The dog talk at its finest in this episode is full of stories of hunting with Moore and other stalwarts of the Black and Tan breed of Wachter's experience. Although fanciers of Black and Tans will no doubt appreciate this episode most, the stories, accounts and benefits of a coon hunter's life within the confines of a given breed should serve to influence others to choose a similar path. Similarities in age and geographical backgrounds make for easy conversation between Steve and his entertaining guest Leon Childers in this episode. Childers, born in eastern Kentucky, followed the path of many mountain-born boys whose families sought better jobs and better times in northern climes. For Childers, the move from the same area in which Steve's grandparents were raised, it was a move to western Ohio, particularly Fairborn, near Dayton. Steve and Leon bring the dog talk at its finest to the Gone To The Dogs microphones in an hour-plus of coon dog conversation the likes of which one won't experience from those of lesser ages. Steve is 78 and Leon is 82. Childers has owned some of the better Walker competition dogs of the past sixty years or more and has an AKC World Championship to his credit. The talk covers many of Childers' best hounds and stories about his handlers and his favorite hunts over the years. The conversation is organic. The entertainment factor is off the charts. Enjoy. Cheyenne Cummings of Seneca, Missouri is known throughout the coon hunting world as one of the really good guys in the sport. And like their owner, Cummings' hounds wear the “really good” label, really good as well. One of them holds the PKC World Champion title and the other is a UKC Hall of Fame (5 time) Grand Nite Champion and Autumn Oaks National Grand Nite Champion, two the most respected titles in the game. And if that were not enough, his Redneck Backwoods Shack dog, a twelve-year-old Treeing Walker, is proving to be one of the most prolific stud dogs in the game. This episode covers some interesting topics including Cumming's background, the backgrounds and resumes of his big-winning hounds and his thoughts about the condition of the sport, now and for the future. As Steve reviews the achievements of Shack and Stogie, as well as other big-winning hounds the likes of ProSport truck winner Tin Cup and big winning Sliding Clyde, both sired by Shack, the listener will understand why Cummings is an important voice in the fast moving coonhound game of today. This episode aired before the death of one of coon hunting's most successful and most colorful ambassadors. I hope you enjoy this replay from November of 2022. This episode takes us to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and Arkansas to visit with coon hunting legend Junior Lasseter. At 73 years of age, Junior had amazing recall of events that led him from the Ozark hills to the major stages of competitive coon hunting, in the woods and on the bench. At one time in coon hunting history, there were many commercial coonhound and combination dog kennels operating out of the Ozarks. Ads appeared in the classified sections of not only the tree dog publications but in major outdoor magazines as well. Writers like Wilson Rawls created a narrative that the Ozarks were the cradle of coon hunting in America. Lasseter's stories emanate from the same root and place him as the perfect visitant to the Gone To The Dogs microphone. Lasseter has owned National Champions on the bench in both the UKC, PKC and ACHA registries and has a final four appearance in the UKC World Championship to his credit. He's the first, and perhaps only handler to win a pickup truck showing hounds. Lasseter's hounds like Table Rock Flying Hawk, Table Rock Mundo, Jr., Biggerstaff's Little Buck, and Morgan's Tree Jamming Mundar fill the conversations in this episode. Lasseter was known far and wide in the 80's when Steve began his career at the UKC registry. This episode is smothered with Ozark flavor, like cathead biscuits under a blanket of fried squirrel gravy. You'll enjoy Junior's stories. You'll want to follow them to the source, and you will, where mountain music echoes off the ridges and swells up from the cold stream hollers of tree dog country. It's all right here so, enjoy! We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Special thanks to Alpha Dog Nutrition and Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.
