When Steve and his partner in coonhounds Mark Miller made the decision to offer their young Quadruple Grand Champion Bear Pen Fever at stud, a young couple from southeastern North Carolina were the first to book a breeding. Lucas and Kayleigh Clemmons, both in their 20s decided to take a chance on the unproven stud dog after losing the hound that had intended to use. The bitch the Clemmons duo wanted to breed was a two-year old Plott female they named Lean Mean JoleneIn this episode Steve talks with the Clemmons' about the decision, the surprise the litter of twelve provided them and the decision to raise the entire litter in their home. Lady listeners will particularly enjoy Kayleigh's perspective on hounds and hunting from a woman's point of view. With so many young hunters entering the hound sports today, this episode provides the answer to the age old question, is coon hunting strictly a man's game. In this episode of the Houndsman XP podcast, the boys renew a longtime friendship with Louisiana's Mike Cauley, best known for the successful exploits of his Bayou Cajun Plott Hound pack on wild hogs and on bears, both the blacks of the Northwoods of the US and Canada and the giant browns of Sweden.Cauley primarily hunts hogs in the swamps and bayous of southeastern Louisiana where he has caught hundreds of the species over the years. He has also made three trips to Sweden to hunt the country's huge brown bears after shipping several Plott Hounds to hunters there. One of the bears taken with Cauley-bred Plotts ranks fourth among Sweden's largest trophy bears. Cauley's experiences hunting brown bears in Sweden are thoroughly examined.Discussions move to questions about why he chose hogs as his game of choice and why he chose the Plott breed over other breeds of hounds. An in-depth discussion evolves concerning the bulldog's role in hunting hogs, what makes a good catch dog and how hounds and bulldogs are trained to work together. Cauley's favorite bloodlines of bulldogs and curs used for catching dangerous wild boars are also explored. Our hosts implore Cauley to describe the typical Deep South hog hunt with dogs, the type of territory he hunts and the type of equipment he uses on the hunt. Cauley also discusses the advantages and the pitfalls of using the same dogs on hogs and bears. Realizing many of the hogs Cauley catches are taken alive, additional questions emerge about how hogs are caught and what are the risks to hunter and hound. An exciting story of Trapper and the junkyard hog helps to make this inaugural episode on hog hunting one that listeners will surely enjoy.Release Date: 10-20-19 ►Get Your Houndsman XP Info, Gear & More Here!www.HoundsmanXP.com►Become a Patron of Houndsman XP! When the Autumn Oaks interviews suffered a hit by unexpected electronic foes, the onsite conversation with Plott aficionado Bill Shininger and youth handler/hunter Hannah Cable had to be rescheduled after the event. What would seem to be a disappointment, lacking the on-site flavor of the crowd at Oaks, the interview turned out to be an easy-listening episode that listeners are sure to appreciate. Shininger is no newcomer to the podcast while Cable is a first-timer. The exchange runs the gamut of all things Plott dogs. Shininger is a breeder and fancier that has hitched his kennel's star to a standout stud dog named Lazarus, winner of the trifecta for Plotts with three-in-a-row victories at the prestigious Plott Days event hosted annually by the National Plott Hound Association. The name Cable is legendary in the coonhound world through the exploits of Hannah's older brother Kevin, handler and promoter of the famed Big Money-line of Treeing Walker dogs. Kevin's seventeen-year-old sister Hannah has also earned considerable acclaim but with her Plott dogs. Showing and sometimes hunting Gambler, her first Plott and Joe, brother to Shininger's stud dog Lazarus, Hannah has compiled a long list of wins, largely in Bench Show competition but not all. Shininger and Cable appear in this episode because of their demonstrated willingness to give back to the sport they love. Shininger's efforts in encouraging hunters to preserve their hounds through frozen semen and Cable's efforts to encourage and help other youth to excel in the hound sport she loves make them both worthy of your time. The inspiration and encouragement they bring is infectious. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Kevin's seventeen-year-old sister Hannah has also earned considerable acclaim but with her Plott dogs. Showing and sometimes hunting Gambler, her first Plott and Joe, brother to Shininger's stud dog Lazarus, Hannah has compiled a long list of wins, largely in Bench Show competition but not all.Shininger and Cable appear in this episode because of their demonstrated willingness to give back to the sport they love. When the Autumn Oaks interviews suffered a hit by unexpected electronic foes, the onsite conversation with Plott aficionado Bill Shininger and youth handler/hunter Hannah Cable had to be rescheduled after the event. What would seem to be a disappointment, lacking the on-site flavor of the crowd at Oaks, the interview turned out to be an easy-listening episode that listeners are sure to appreciate.Shininger is no newcomer to the podcast while Cable is a first-timer. In this week's episode I am joined by Roger Norman of Cabin Side Kennels. Roger is a coon and bear hunter from West Virginia. I have followed Roger on Instagram for a few years and reached out ahead of Autumn Oaks. Luckily he was able to make it with the whole family and I was able to get him to sit down for a few minutes. His little boy is already obsessed with dogs at only a year old and spoiler alert he ended up with the Plott puppy Roger mentioned at the end! Where did the Leopard Dog come from? That is a question we may never know the answer to. Were Leopard Dogs and Plotts crossed? While opinions differ, today's author proposes that is exactly what happened. On the quest to make the best bear dogs in the land, there are lots of twist and turns. But to sculpt a masterpiece a sculptor must use a combination of the finest materials and the highest quality of tools. Building a bear dog is no different. It takes the keen eye of the sculptor to seek out the greatest raw material and then work his magic. Did Henry Plott have the same vision in mind for the Plott dogs? Did Henry Plott see the Leopard dogs as a vital piece of the Plott hounds we know and love today? Listen up ladies and gentlemen, class is in session. Recent exploits of the boys Plott dogs as well as the announcement of the upcoming nuptials of Corey's female Goldie to Bill Shininger's stud dog are front and center. The talk moves to the latest accomplishments of Steve and Mark Miller's Plott Fever in field and water events and progresses to the realm of deep-thinking about how to decide when and to which stud to breed with an admonition to owners of females “not to wait too long.” With Autumn Oaks less than two months away, the boys share some of their favorite humorous stories from experiences at “The Event Where History Is Made.”This one is jam-packed with good information concerning how to improve club membership, explores the dangers of a once-common practice of climbing trees and culminates with a very interesting conversation on the importance of track dogs in the sport. The boys discuss the all-important question “which is more important, the track dog or the tree dog?” If you don't listen to anything else this week, check out this portion of the podcast. It's good stuff!

Co-host Corey Gruver and Steve have been addressing various aspects of treeing in reference to coonhounds in previous episodes. In this podcast, Whatley joins in a discussion based on exploring the many aspects of trail or track dogs in our sport. Whatley, in his competition days was well-known for following some mighty-good Bluetick hounds and Steve is not hesitant to explore with the man that fed them, the attributes of those dogs in regard to whether or not they could be identified as good track dogs. All the aspects of what it means to be recognized as a “track dog” are explored in this episode. Dex is very knowledgeable, can be extremely humorous and speaks with an accent and with the demeanor of one that is definitely Lone Star to the bone. Enjoy. When host Steve Fielder was a young hunter attending coonhound events in Virginia and West Virginia, prior to his registry days, he often hunted with John Sturgill and Les Bolen. The duo were coon hunting buddies and were a force to be reckoned with in competition and on the numerous pleasure-hunts our host enjoyed with them in those days. Each man was noted then and now for having world class Plott Hounds. Recently, Jamie Estep, who joins Sturgill and Bolen in this episode, designated the annual National Plott Hound Association's West Virginia Plott Sectional the John Sturgill Tribute Hunt and Show. Sturgill was honored throughout the recent three days of hunts, shows and bear events. Estep invited Steve to judge the bench show on Friday, setting up the perfect opportunity for the friends to get together and recall old times. This is a feel-good conversation centered upon hunting in the rugged West Virginia mountains with Plott dogs. Estep recalls Sturgill and Bolen as role models for his own career which now includes the title of Field Representative for UKC and anchor for the YouTube video coverage of the popular Tournament of Champions for coonhounds. Steve is betting you will really enjoy this one.

In this episode co-hosts Steve Fielder and Corey Gruver are joined by coon hunter, trainer and handler Mark Miller of Taylorsville, North Carolina. Miller recently completed the Holy Grail of coon hunting, the United Kennel Club Grand Nite Champion title with a Plott dog co-owned by Steve and himself, Bear Pen Fever. The trio drill down into Fever's success story discussing the young hound's progression from a five-month-old puppy to reaching the pinnacle in competition hunting at less than two and one-half years old. Corey leads the interview leaving few stones unturned in terms of exactly what's involved in achieving the Grand Nite Champion and other UKC titles. Fever currently holds titles in Field Trials, Water Races, Nite Hunting, Hunt Tests and Bench Showing in UKC as well as Nite Hunting in Professional Kennel Club events. The expense, the determination, the challenges and the setbacks are all fair game. Of particular interest to listeners will be the reasons a confirmed, highly successful Treeing Walker fancier would embark on the arduous journey with a Plott of all available breeds. Steve wades the murky waters of why Plott hunters may be more prone to breed to dogs in their own backyards. You expect dog talk at its finest on the Gone To The Dogs Podcast and there's plenty to enjoy in this episode.

This week on Bear Grease, your host Clay Newcomb, brings you this second part in our series on Plott Hounds and how they've been interwoven into the lives of the Appalachian people. Developed in isolation deep in the Great Smoky Mountains, the Plott breed was tailor made for the rugged landscape, its people, its bears. The folks who've dedicated big blocks of their life to this bear hound are called Plott Men and Women. If you cut them they bleed brindle and in the very niche hound world, some rise to the top as Plott Royalty - and one such man is the late Barry Tarlteton of Greenville, Tennessee. His life will give us a much bigger vista than just dogs, but a rare, authentic peak into Appalachia, its culture, its people, and ways. It will be told to us both first person through an archival interview of Berry and also through the collective voices of his grandson and great-grandson, Tracy and Ben Jones. Berry started the Houston Valley strain of Plotts, he's in the Plott Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Bear Hunters Hall of fame. He was also a legendary lawman who took up a badge and gun in the name of family honor and spent decades chasing down and busting moonshiners in East Tennessee. The stories are as wild as these mountains themselves including car bombing, shoot outs, and being bushwhacked with a Tommy gun. You're about to see that Plott Hounds are just part of the plot. We really doubt you're going to want to miss this one… Connect with Clay and MeatEater Clay on Instagram MeatEater on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube Shop Bear Grease MerchSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's episode of Bear Grease, your host, Clay Newcomb, is bringing you the saga of the American Plott Hound - a story not without drama. Plotts are a breed of big game hound specializing in bear hunting. They were originally bred deep in the mountains of Southern Appalachia, specifically Haywood County, North Carolina. The breed, which carries the family name of Plott, was kept in isolation for nearly 150 years while being refined by the frontier mountaineers of Appalachia. The Plott Hound is anything but mainstream, but in his extensive travels to meet Plott Hound men and women, Clay has met some of the finest, salt-of-the-earth people in America. This is a fascinating story of true Americana and we really doubt you're going to want to miss this one… Connect with Clay and MeatEater Clay on Instagram MeatEater on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube Shop Bear Grease MerchSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
