In this book club chat, we'll talk about Doyle's use of landscape to add ambiance and mystery to this novel that is at once a detective story, a horror, and a gothic tale. We discuss how the book, though known as a Sherlock book, has more Watson than anyone else. We talk about why this duo is so likable, and why Sherlock has continued in such popularity in retellings and reimaginings today. This book is highly accessible, so if you've never read a Sherlock story, definitely start with The Hound of the Baskervilles. The pacing and mystery will suck you right in. While searching the interweb for Rhino documentaries, Robbie came across a TED talk by a professor from the Uiversity of Arkansas Monticello called Elena Rubino talking about Rhinos. The New Testament warns against allowing such bitterness to grow, as it can lead to division and strife within the community of believers.         How do we deal with Bitterness?     - 1 Get rid of it. Mark Adamczyk emailed from Akron, Ohio: "Mark, Just wanted to reach out to you about the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast.  I found you on Sirius XM last year (March 2024) while recovering from back surgery (herniated a disc last February.  220 V down the left leg  -  that was a TON of fun!!)  Hearing you mention recovering from hip replacement surgery the other week made me feel a certain kinship with you around the podcast.  About 3 weeks after surgery, my wife and I received an invitation to travel to Ireland with our kid's high school band for them to play in the Dublin St Patrick's Day parade.  (Our kids have graduated but I still cover the sports as team physician!)  Having made enough of a recovery to do the walking needed, we made the trip and had an absolute BLAST touring Southern Ireland (Dublin, Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney [my favorite!!], Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Mohr). When I got back to the States, I started looking around for ways to listen to Celtic music as we thoroughly enjoyed listening to it while on vacation.  I then found your podcast and have been listening somewhat regularly since.  (Summertime tends toward country music for me.  But when the weather gets colder, especially after the holidays, I find myself looking for you again!  I also catch up a bit sitting outside on a weekend morning on our back patio at other times when I get the chance!) We also got a new dog soon after coming home and named him Guinness in honor of the trip!  (We also thought he reminded us a bit of a pint of the brew with his white accents!  Check out his collar!)  When I take him on his daily walks, you are a regular on our playlist!  Me walking my Irish dog and listening to the I&CMP while recovering from back surgery  -  beautiful!!! "They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!" Those canine tracks in Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles set the great Sherlock Holmes sleuthing on the trail of a murderer. It was a case of art imitating etymology. When Middle English speakers first borrowed sleuth from the Old Norse word slōth, the term referred to the track of an animal or person. In Scotland, sleuth hund referred to a kind of bloodhound used to hunt game or track down fugitives from justice. In 19th-century U.S. English, sleuthhound, soon shortened to sleuth, began to be used for a detective. From there, sleuth slipped into verb use to apply to what a sleuth does.
