The week of December 20, 2023 on The Metallica Report… We're going to sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the highlights of the first 20 episodes of The Metallica Report. Remember Lars and that iPod? (think Blue Oyster Cult!) What about Kirk catching waves or James' love of a good music festival? And who could forget Robert's night on stage in Dallas? First, Steffan gives us his review of a night out in the East Bay watching two bands featuring HQ staffers: Dana Lindstrom's Milk For The Angry and previous pod interviewee Avi Vinocur's Badnight, Texas (the hard core version of Goodnight, Texas). Next we'll revisit interviews from the first 20 episodes as all four guys gave us some great stories about their hobbies, music, being on stage (beachball chaos! guitar solos!) and creating new material for every show. We close out with Robert chiming in to share his Christmas plans with us. Happy Holidays to all . . . we'll be back next week to celebrate the New Year! This week on The Metallica Report… Steffan and Renée chat with two of the band's long-time collaborators: graphic artist Tony Squindo and co-founding member of Goodnight, Texas, Avi Vinocur. Plus, Kirk chimes in about his bluesy, down-and-dirty guitar solo on Goodnight, Texas' new song, “Runaways.” Avi fills us in on his unlikely journey from a humble studio runner to Metallica's go-to side-man for special projects like the All Within My Hands benefit concerts, S&M2 with the San Francisco Symphony, and even an appearance on Howard Stern. Recently, the tables turned, and Avi's band became the hosts of a special guest musician: our own Kirk Hammett. Tony Squindo - whose art has graced many a Metallica t-shirt, poster, and even a Monopoly game - chats with Renée about the evolution of his work for the band. The man who once published a book called “Year of the Skull” talks about his fondness for revisiting his previous pieces and shares his favorite thing he's ever created for a member of Metallica. The guys sit down with Avi Vinocur of Goodnight, Texas to talk about how heavy a mandolin can sound, using songs for commercials, working with Metallica, and more! Song - The Railroad: Goodnight, Texas
The three headed monster, the apocalyptic dream team known as Paulie Mac, Creative Tony, and Shannon Koehler of The Stone Foxes get you set for the end times(orange skies and all). Kapler's kids are killing it, kickoff in Santa Clara is this Sunday, and Avi Vinocur comes on to talk about performing on the new Metallica "S&M2" record, his band Goodnight, Texas, and what it was like playing with Shannon and the Foxes back in the old days. Then, they pick their favorite end of the world anthems. Spoiler, no one picked REM. Enjoy the show! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Avi Vinocur is one of the primary singers and songwriters for the band Goodnight, Texas. When Avi isn’t touring the country with his band, he works with Metallica at HQ and sometimes tours with them as a crew member. Starting in 2016, Avi began occasionally performing mandolin and vocals with James Hetfield for Sammy Hagar’s benefit concerts. This led to Avi performing an entire set with Metallica for the 2018 All Within My Hands benefit at the Masonic in San Francisco. Avi is also featured on S&M2 as a vocalist during “All Within My Hands” and performed with the band recently on The Howard Stern Show.In this episode we talk with Avi about his band Goodnight, Texas, self-producing and releasing records, The Stone Foxes, getting the job at HQ, arranging an acoustic version of Motorbreath, jamming with Kirk during The Unforgiven, Howard Stern, the All Within My Hands show and S&M2.Songs featured in this episode are:Goodnight, Texas - The Railroad (A Long Life of Living)Goodnight, Texas - Submarines (A Long Life of Living)Goodnight, Texas - Outrage for the Execution of Willie McGee (Conductor)The Stone Foxes - Patience (Bears and Bulls)Goodnight, Texas - Homesick (Conductor)You can purchase Goodnight, Texas music HEREIf you think Metal Up Your Podcast has value, please consider taking a brief moment to leave a positive review and subscribe here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/metal-up-your-podcast-all-things-metallica/id1187775077You can further support the show by becoming a patron. Goodnight, Texas - At the Crossroads of Folk, Blues and Rock ‘n’ RollHear more shows like this as https://entertalkradio.com/jackiesgrooveConventional wisdom says the two frontmen of a band shouldn’t live on opposite sides of the United States, but that's never seemed to deter Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolf. Drawing their name from Pat and Avi’s onetime geographic midpoint between their homes in San Francisco and Chapel Hill, NC (the real town of Goodnight in the State of Texas, a tiny hamlet east of Amarillo), the four-piece also exists at the center of its songwriters’ contrasting styles — via a 1913 Gibson A mandolin and a 2015 Danelectro, at the crossroads of folk and blues and rock ‘n’ roll, in a place where dry wit and dark truths meet hope and utmost sincerity.Website/Socials:https://hiwearegoodnighttexashowareyou.comIG: @goodnighttexasTwitter: @goodnight_texasFB: https://www.facebook.com/goodnighttexasYT: https://www.youtube.com/user/GoodnightTexasMusic
