Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In this, the penultimate episode of the “Monster Island World Tour,” Nate is joined by MIFV staple (and Jessica's "bestie"), Becky “Bex” Smith, but this time, she brings her “husbando,” Encyclo, along! They discuss arguably the best (or at least most iconic) British kaiju film, Gorgo, the last of the 1961 European kaiju movies. Why? To pay off a joke that goes all the way back to episode 18! This is the third Eugene Lourie monster film Nate has discussed on the show, so he may have to bent the podcast's purview to include the fourth and final one. Bex is full of hot takes about the monster suit and special effects, while Nate argues this has the first ever "Kenny" in a kaiju film. That's just a taste of what they discuss! Since this film takes place partly in Ireland and there are tensions between Ireland and England, the Toku Topic is Anglo-Irish relations. “Jimmy's Notes” on this episode COMING SOON! It used to be that there was heavy metal and there was hardcore punk and nary shall the twain meet. That is, until thrash metal started making waves and punk bands decided... hey, wouldn't it be tight to use some of these sounds? Enter: Crossover thrash, the cross-cultural event of punk and metal joining up to create the foundation of modern metal. How did we get here? What became of this once-influential subgenre once everyone incorporated the ideas into other sounds? And what was the deal with Fearless Iranians From Hell? We explore on this episode. Bands featured here include DRI, Cro-Mags, Send More Paramedics, Leeway, Municipal Waste, and Power Trip. Folks… it's a good one. Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingIn this episode, Matt Fanslow reflects on the recent passings of two cultural icons—Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan—and draws parallels between their careers and the automotive aftermarket industry. Both figures revolutionized their respective fields (music and professional wrestling) through innovation, perseverance, and an unparalleled connection with their audiences. Matt explores what we can learn from their legacies, including the importance of passion, reinvention, and recognizing opportunities outside our comfort zones.Key Discussion Points1. Ozzy Osbourne: The Accidental Pioneer of Heavy MetalOzzy's final performance at the Power Trip festival, where he performed in immense pain, skipping pain meds to stay present. How Black Sabbath (with guitarist Tony Iommi) accidentally created metal by downtuning guitars after a workplace injury. The importance of appreciating contributions even if you're not a die-hard fan.The value of knowing how you've impacted others (like Ozzy hearing tributes before his passing).2. Hulk Hogan: The Man Who Made Wrestling MainstreamHogan's physical sacrifices (spinal damage from his signature leg drop) and how wrestling is a work but not fake. His ability to connect with audiences in ways no wrestler had before—comparable to Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. How Hogan's heel turn (becoming a villain with the NWO) revitalized wrestling during a slump. The role of timing, charisma, and reinvention in long-term success.3. Lessons for the Automotive AftermarketPassion & Perseverance: Like Ozzy and Hogan, success in the aftermarket requires dedication and pushing through challenges.Reinvention: Hogan's shift from hero to villain kept him relevant—how can shops adapt to stay ahead?Breaking Out of Comfort Zones: Both Ozzy and Hogan expanded beyond their core careers (reality TV, movies). How can shops engage in community work, sponsorships, or other visibility-boosting activities?Continuous Improvement: Getting 1% better every day compounds into major growth over time.4. Personal Reflections & Industry ParallelsMatt's admiration for educators like Paul Danner, who revolutionized training accessibility. The importance of finding the right shop culture for growth (just as Hogan thrived under Vince McMahon's WWE expansion). Why awareness of opportunities—both inside and outside the industry—is crucial.Notable Quotes"Ozzy and Hogan didn't just succeed in their fields—they redefined them. That's the kind of impact we should strive for in the aftermarket.""Wrestling isn't fake; it's a performance with real consequences. Same goes for our work—every repair matters.""If you improve by just 0.33% every day, you'll be 100% better in a year. Small steps lead to big changes."While Ozzy and Hogan came from entirely different worlds, their stories remind us that innovation, adaptability, and connection are universal keys to success. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! If you're joining us just after G-Fest, welcome! In this abridged episode of our Patreon-exclusive podcast, you'll hear Nathan and executive producer/MIFV MAX “prime” member Damon Noyes discuss (or rather, riff) a “pseudo-remake” (and by that, we mean “second cousin twice removed”) of Reptilicus with the 2009 SyFy movie Reptisaurus. It claims to be based on the Charlton comic, which was a Reptilicus comic for two issues, but the $15 CGI creature looks nothing like it. And there's no alien named Bob. What about Bob?! Instead, we get a cadre of 35-year-old college students, two bumbling soldiers, and Buck Rogers in his living room, er, office. It may look like an Asylum movie and quack like an Asylum movie, but it isn't an Asylum movie, no matter what Grok may tell you. (Yes, Nathan experimented with X's AI assistant to research this and had to fact-check the robot). Strap in, Kaiju Lovers! In our third Henshin Men bonus re-upload, Chris returns as a pinch hitter for Jake to discuss the sequel to Masked Rider: The First, Kamen Rider: The Next. This was Chris's (and Nate's) first exposure to Kamen Rider V3, and as you'll hear, their opinions on the character have evolved since this episode. What's exciting is this film is finally getting an official U.S. release on blu-ray from Media Blasters. Enjoy! The original shownotes: “Sixty-nine, dudes!” And now that the obvious joke is out of the way: Christopher Riner returns as a second-time guest because Jake Hambrick was busy with family (good for him!). But Mr. Riner can't help but ask, “Why me?” The film he discusses with Nathan, Kamen Rider: The Next, is a secret J-horror movie complete with a Sadako knockoff. (Making it accidentally perfect for Halloween season). To say it's a far cry from its predecessor, Masked Rider: The First, would be an understatement. It's dour, convoluted, and confusing. But it does do one thing better than The First. What's that? Let's just say it made Chris think Koichi Sakamoto was involved with this movie. Listen to hear this and more in the latest Henshin Men! This episode was edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. Follow Henshin Men on Twitter: @HenshinMenPod. In this Henshin Men re-upload, you'll hear Jake's first podcast appearance. He joined Nate to discuss Masked Rider: The First (aka Kamen Rider: The First), which is now getting a blu-ray re-release from Media Blasters. The first episode of our Kamen Rider Faiz coverage is coming soon! The original shownotes: Henshin Men goes from a reimagining of the original Kamen Rider (1971) to a reimagining of Kamen Rider Black and now back to what Nathan says is the superior reimagining of the 1971 series and manga: Masked Rider: The First (2005). He's joined by aspiring podcaster Jake Hambrick to dive into this unique Japanese superhero film. It borrows more from Shotaro Ishinomori's manga than the TV series, so it lacks tropes like the iconic henshin pose, and has an almost Sam Raimi Spider-Man flair to it. What truly makes it stand out, though, is its theme: the power of beauty. Throw in some great practical effects and solid fight scenes, and you have a winner in the remake debate. This episode was edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. Follow Henshin Men on Twitter: @HenshinMenPod. As we catch up on our episode production (sorry!), we're re-uploading a few episodes from one of HPV3's precursors, Henshin Men. This one is Chris's first ever podcast appearance—and it's the much-referenced discussion of the last two-thirds of Kamen Rider Black Sun. We have a few more coming before, hopefully, we drop our next new episode! The original show notes: Last fall, Nathan guest hosted on Tomi Trembath's podcast, Giant-Sized Violence, as part of a crossover discussing Kamen Rider Black and its new remake, Kamen Rider Black Sun. Sadly, plans to discuss episodes 4-10 of Black Sun with Tomi fell through, so Nathan invited Christopher Riner, a hardcore listener of all his podcasts, to join him to suffer through, er, complete the coverage. This is by far the most violent and political tokusatsu Nathan has ever seen, and he's not sure the Japanese filmmakers fully understood the cultural weight of the controversies they borrowed from American politics. It doesn't help that the show has the subtlety of a sledgehammer with its themes and social commentary. But is it a worthy remake of a henshin hero classic? Chris and Nate don't think so. Listen to find out why! Listen to coverage of episodes 1-3 on Giant-Sized Violence (Apple) (Spotify). This episode was edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. Follow Henshin Men on Twitter: @HenshinMenPod. Join the official Facebook fan page for this and The Monster Island Film Vault, The Markalite Lounge. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And Happy Birthday, Ray! Nate and Elijah once again celebrate their birthdays by celebrating Ray Harryhausen's birthday with another deep dive into the stopmotion master's filmography: The Valley of Gwangi. This 1969 dinosaur epic combined the monster movie and western at a time when both genres were past their primes. It failed at the box office, but it has since become a cult classic, and it's no wonder why. Cowboys wrangling dinosaurs, baby! While it aped (pun intended) King Kong (1933), it was Ray's loving tribute to his mentor, Willis O'Brien, who wanted to make this film two decades earlier. It has some of Ray's best work but also some underdeveloped characters. Where does it rank in Nate's and Elijah's lists of Harryhausen films? Listen to find out! Friends,Today Heather and I look at the war in Iran through the lens of Donald Trump's insatiable need to expand and display his power. How can he even consider getting America into this war without consulting Congress? Doesn't doing so also violate his promise to the American people in the 2024 election that he would avoid foreign entanglements? And who is advising him, now that half of the professionals on the National Security Council have been fired and neither Tulsi Gabbard (who's supposed to be the intelligence czar) nor Pete Hegseth (at least formally the secretary of defense) is involved in Trump's decision-making? We'll get to these and other questions. Please pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, take our poll, and join the discussion. This is a public episode. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In this solo bonus episode, which also features the return of the intrepid Jimmy From NASA to the producer booth, Nate discusses one of the lesser British kaiju movies, The Giant Behemoth (1959). This biblically-titled flick, which was directed by Eugene Lourie (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Gorgo), while pretty average, was the last film to feature special effects by the legendary Willis O'Brien of King Kong (1933) fame. However, some studio interference changed the story from one about extraterrestrial goo to a more "traditional" monster movie. Behemoth also had a screenplay by a blacklisted writer. Yeah, none of these were on Nate's bingo card, either! Then Nate answers some long-overdue listener feedback. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! This episode marks the final “Godzilla Redux” of season four, and it's a low-key banger! Robert Kelly, who managed to escape capture by the British police after episode 103, returns to discuss his first G-film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), and share what Nate says is the most unique take he's ever heard on this film. Namely, Robert says Godzilla is his friend, because Godzilla's monstrousness is a virtue in the vein of G.K. Chesterton. No kidding! But it isn't the only take they discuss—and some are hotter than Big G's nuclear breath! They get into the so-called “alien apes as Americans allegory,” the history and culture of Okinawa as it relates to this film (which is to that island what Lord of the Rings is to New Zealand), and more! King Caesar's ghost! This week, Meghan and Miranda are joined by POLITICO's Rachel Bade to unpack the breaking news of former President Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis... and what this means for the already-chaotic Democratic primary. Meghan opens up about her deeply personal connection to this moment, reflecting on how her own family's public battle with cancer changed everything. Later, A.J. Edelman joins the show to break down Trump's headline-grabbing Middle East tour. Is it a legacy move… or just another gold-plated photo op? And finally, from the White House to the haunted house — Annabelle the Demon Doll is on the road and allegedly wreaking supernatural havoc at every stop. Would you dare get close?
