In the realm of youth development, few names have resonated as strongly as the Boy Scouts of America. However, a significant transformation has seen the emergence of Scouting America, a rebrand designed to embody inclusivity. At the heart of this evolution is Jon Elliott, the District Executive for the Shenandoah Area Council, whose insights provide a profound understanding of the shift and its impact on communities. This rebrand, as Jon explains, officially adopted in May 2024, endeavors to shed the gender-specific connotations of its former title. The term ‘Boy Scouts' is now history, paving the way for an inclusive future that welcomes all—boys, girls, and families alike. 'It's trying to be a little more inclusive and let everybody know that we're not just for boys anymore,' says Jon. Jon highlights that girls have been part of certain programs since the 1960s, but now the Cub Scouts and traditional scout troops openly welcome them. Scouting America is more than just a name change; it's a commitment to fostering an environment where both boys and girls can thrive. 'Both have good programs... we just do things a little differently,' he notes. Scouting America's structure offers age-appropriate activities aimed at holistic development. The Cub Scout program targets children from kindergarten through fifth grade, emphasizing family-oriented activities. As children grow older, they transition into Scouts BSA for those from the sixth grade until their 18th birthday, with separate troops for boys and girls or even co-ed troops in some pilots. For the more adventurous, Venturing Crews have been co-ed since the 1970s, catering to 14 to 21-year-olds with high-adventure programs. There are also Explorer Posts that focus on specific career fields, partnering with local emergency services to provide hands-on experience in professions like firefighting and law enforcement. Becoming an Eagle Scout is a journey of dedication and leadership. Jon emphasizes the rigorous process, which includes earning 21 merit badges—11 of which are mandatory—and completing a community service project that highlights leadership skills. 'Eagle Scouts are the top of the top,' Jon asserts, noting the lifetime recognition the rank confers. The Shenandoah Area Council, split into districts such as Shawnee and Shenrapawa, covers a vast region. Jon's role encompasses six counties and the city of Winchester, with growing participation reflected in the establishment of new units across Virginia. 'Scouting is coming back to communities,' he celebrates, reflecting on the reestablishment of programs post-COVID-19. Camp Rock Enon in Gore serves as a hub for many scouting activities, from summer camps to high adventure programs. Jon fondly reminisces about personal milestones at the camp and highlights its value in providing a structured environment for scout activities. With options sprawling into Pennsylvania, scouting experiences are diverse and rich with opportunity. Jon invites families to find their fit within the scouting community, emphasizing flexibility in joining times and locations. Whether through the national website BeAScout.org or local meetings, the path to becoming a scout is accessible year-round. The essence of scouting thrives on volunteer support. From store assistance to troop leadership, community members are encouraged to contribute their skills and time. 'We always can use a volunteer for things,' Jon affirms, extending an open invitation to those looking to foster the next generation of leaders. Scouting America stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of youth development, where inclusivity and practical skills converge to build better citizens. As Jon and his team navigate this transformative journey, they remain committed to equipping young people with the tools to make ethical and moral choices. It's more than a rebrand; it's a renewed commitment to community and character. As humans continue to search the cosmos for evidence of intelligent life from other worlds, and the UAP debate suggests the possibility that it may already have found us, legal scholars are now considering how laws would apply to potential contact scenarios. Joining us on The Micah Hanks Program this week are Professor Michael Bohlander, the Chair in Global Law and SETI Policy in the Durham Law School, and Dr. John Elliott, an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Computer Science and the Coordinator for the SETI Post Detection Hub at the University of St Andrews. Together we explore how international laws could apply if contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence were made, and how a recent survey the researchers are conducting could be used to develop post-contact protocols. John Elliot has a story that simply has to be heard to be believed. If a movie studio pitched his story as an idea, it would be shot down as just too far-fetched to be real. But real it is. Having chosen to leave his hugely successful business at just age 35 to seek out an adventure, John, with absolutely no previous experience or training, purchased a handful of camels and began what was to become a solo 12,000 km journey that took him and his camels to every corner of the country. John endured pretty much every critical life-threatening moment you could imagine, and some you just couldn't. In his incredibly entertaining way, we hear about split-second survival decisions while having to outrun one of Australia's most devastating bushfires, falling off a mountain face with 1,000kg of camel falling right behind him, having to survive on roadkill, fighting off rouge wild camel attacks, losing all his camels while in a life-threatening blizzard and, when facing a fate worse than death, holding the 5 bullets he carried with him and needing to make the decision that there was just enough for each of his camels and then himself. This is not just a story just about getting out of your comfort zone, it's about smashing the crap out of anything that even slightly resembles one.
What an epic adventure. Today we were joined by solo adventurer John Elliott who walked across every state in Australia covering 12173km with 6 camels. We talk the highs and lows, falling off a cliff tied to camels, learning to live off the land, being adopting by indigenous locals and even tinder dates. What a story and a legend of a bloke. We're witnessing a catastrophe unlike anything Florida has seen in years. It is one of the most powerful storms to hit the US in recorded history. Hurricane Ian did weaken to a tropical storm overnight but it's far from over as it churns toward the Atlantic ocean. So far, there is one confirmed death in Deltona, in Volusia county. The storm made landfall yesterday as a strong category four hurricane slamming communities along Florida's west coast with devastating storm surge, torrential rain, and violent winds up to 150 miles an hour. This morning, we're getting an aerial look at the damage outside Fort Myers, one of the places hit hardest by the hurricane. Entire neighborhoods are underwater and some houses are on fire. Right now, central Florida is taking the brunt of the storm. Orlando is looking at the potential for serious damage, and St. Augustine is also very much in harm's way. President Biden has approved Florida's request for federal help, declaring the storm a major disaster. In St. Augustine, on the east coast of Florida, many people are riding out the storm despite an evacuation order. The ONS Congress brings together various skillsets and inspires innovation in new ways. With the first in-person Congress since the pandemic set to begin on April 27th, there is much to look forward to. John Elliott, VP of Sales with Carevive brings together his work colleagues to share their excitement for the Congress and what they think might come from it.Reesa Sherin, a Clinical Strategist with Carevive, said she is, “Really excited to be in a space…to support patients…I've always been in the oncology space…supporting patients throughout the treatment journey…and any education the patient may need.”Though the ONS Congress will take place on a hybrid platform, accessible via remote access or in-person, Sherin shared that she believes ONS will shed some light on new ways for the industry to build value-based programming with ONS as the tipping point, “When you align the value to the care that the patient receives the outcomes approve.”Her colleagues agree that ONS is a shared intellectual and innovative platform, “I want to learn from others, what they're doing regarding collection of prodata, patient reported outcomes. We know that studies show when pros are used to monitor and manage symptoms, patient symptoms are identified early, leading to longer time and relevant on-treatment, fewer hospitalizations, and better quality of life and overall, an improved survival,” said Drace Langford, Prompt Patient Support Specialist. April Boyd, Senior Content Developer, shared that she, “always comes away from ONS educated and inspired” and she hopes to continue learning how to continue to improve the health of patients “in a remote way.”Overall, the oncology ecosystem continues to change and innovate based on new models and systems in the space. Carevive aims to educate, inspire, and make positive change in the industry as a knowledge-base for all. Stop by the booth at the ONS Congress to learn more and chat with the Carevive team!

John Elliott, VP, Sales at Carevive spoke with Host Daniel J. Litwin on his observations about the industry at the HLTH 2021 Tradeshow in Boston, Mass.Elliott noted many positive trends during the show and will benefit all in the industry, but most importantly the patients. The biggest takeaways from the show in Elliott's opinion are: • The investor community in attendance hoping to provide innovation resources• An eagerness for a collaborative approach• Acting on data-centric information• “The time is now” essenceOverall, attendees and exhibitors came equipped with a problem-solving mindset. Elliott believes the industry is on the precipice of something big with major tech vendors in attendance and companies thinking innovatively to solve problems. “You're pulling in skillsets or talent that traditionally hasn't been invested in or focused on healthcare; I think there has been a shift. A health system having an innovation team or even an own strategic investment team on where they can work with third party partners, and they're allocating their own investment or capital funds to fill gaps.”To put it short, it's disruptive to the industry in the best way and is one example of how the pandemic is having a positive impact on the healthcare industry. However, the pandemic has posed significant problems for many in healthcare, and oncology is no exception. Traditional chemo infusion was impacted by COVID-19, making it unsafe for the immune-compromised to receive treatment. Luckily, they were able to transition to an oral regimen for a safer patient experience. However, what was the downstream impact on those patients? Luckily, Carevive had the technology to help care teams better support their patients.Carevive serves as a cancer management platform for improving patient experience throughout the cancer journey. Patients and care teams benefit from electronic, patient-reported outcomes. John Elliott, vice president of sales at Carevive, and Rami Elsabeh, chief product officer at DTX, spoke with Oncology and Technology to stress the importance ePROs play across patient populations. DTX is a web-based ePRO tool that uses automated SMS surveys to connect with patients throughout their care episode. Elsabeh said this software allows for streamlined information exchange between patients and the care team. “ePROs historically have been predominantly used more in a research capacity,” Elliott said. “That was the original case for ePROs, and it was fairly removed from any type of reimbursement. What's really evolved is when you have major payers, and you have CMS, and you start looking at value-based reimbursement models, there is strong advocacy for ePROs.” Because ePROs were primarily a research tool, the original focus was data collection. “Nowadays, with the increase in value-based care, reimbursement being tied more and more to quality of care versus quantity of care, and the emphasis on patient outcomes and cost-reduction methods, the ePRO systems they need to have extended capabilities,” Elsabeh said. “What's huge about the evolution is the integration capabilities now,” Elliott said. “So, taking it from a fairly segmented, siloed, single research population to a standard of care for a much broader patient population with actionable capabilities for the care team. That's how you get to the improved outcomes.”

CLEAR YOUR MIND, FEEL LESS STRESSED: www.headspace.com/clubcool Barrett and Phil jump on the mics for another rousing edition. First up, the boys talk about the many incredible style moments at today's historic inauguration, including but not limited to Bernie wearing his meme jacket and the Vice President's nephew showing up in Dior 1s. Then, for the big topic of the day, the guys talk about how the necessity for business growth typically ends up hurting the product from your favorite designers and brands. Whether it's contemporary favorites like John Elliott and Aimé Leon Dore pushing out more product at better margins or bigger companies like Everlane and Bonobos feeling the pressure to answer to their investors and corporate overlords. Barrett then highlights some of his favorite under-the-radar brands (BTFL Studio, Séfr, & Sunflower) and points out how shopping these lines in the earlier stages of this lifecycle can be more favorable to the consumer. Finally, the boys talk about the rise of "Seinfeld" and "Friends" as sources of style inspiration for a generation that's acquainting themselves with the shows for the first time just as 90s influence on fashion continues to reign supreme.
