The epic sendoff of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath had no less than Rival Sons, Gojira, Halestorm, Mastodon, Alice In Chains, Pantera, GnR, Slayer and Metallica pay tribute to the originators of Metal, Black Sabbath. Ozzy did sets with the No More Tears band, including Zakk and then finished the nearly 11 hour concert with the original Black Sabbath, ending in fireworks and quite a lot of tears. Not only did their high energy and infectious brand of metal resonate with hometown music lovers, but it also quickly spread on a global level, resulting in the band supporting and touring with established acts such as Slash and Halestorm.Such was the popularity of Devilskin following We Rise that the band became the first New Zealand rock/metal outfit in 18 years to go Platinum, equalling the effort of the mighty Shihad with the album Killjoy. Over the years singles such as Never See The Light, Little Pills, Start A Revolution, Endo and a cover of Heart's classic, Barracuda, have highlighted the personal nature of Devilskin's music as well as the sonic diversity at their disposal.Eleven years after the release of the groundbreaking We Rise, Devilskin return with Re-Evolution, an album that has already been credited with displaying just how far Devilskin have come in 15 years. This is a bold and dynamic perspective of Devilskin and their continued growth plus the reinvention, and the re-evolution of the band as songwriters and as artists.With Re-Evolution dropping today, July 11, HEAVY spent some time with bass player Paul Martin to dig deeper. In that time, Dalbeth has found himself playing in an American band called BLVD OF EYES, who have often proclaimed their desire to visit our shores without much success.But that all changes in November when BLVD OF EYES hit Australia for an East Coast tour with fellow US party machine The Midnight Devils. The bookends of the tour - a Sydney Harbour boat cruise on November 23 and HEAVYFEST 3 in Brisbane on November 29 - have been announced today to align with Independence Day, with the band also planning to fill in the blanks at a later date.But for now, excitement reigns over BLVD OF EYES' debut trip to our shores, with guitarist Kevin Hicklin and Dalbeth joining HEAVY to spread the news."We're excited, man," Hicklin enthused. "Everything just came to fruition pretty quickly, so we're stoked to do it. When Iron Maiden announced they'd be doing the Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025-26, The Wolf & Action Jackson knew they would have to go see a couple of shows. And when there were only European dates announced for 2025, they knew they needed to dust off their passports because there was no way they would be able to wait 2 years to see the boys on what could be their biggest and best (perhaps last?) greatest hits tour ever. So they chose Stockholm as their European venue because 1) They'd never been to Sweden and 2) Iron Maiden played 2 nights there. Plus the Wolf Cub had been promised by her father that he'd take her to see Maiden in Europe once she was old enough (but was she? Swedish authorities didn't think so but we came up with a work-around). Stockholm was an enchanting land full of beautiful people and a packed house full of Iron Maiden fans for 2 nights of heavy metal classics. We were revved up by Lzzy Hale and Halestorm who held their own on the stage and then treated to the best setlist The Wolf has seen in 30 years of seeing the band live. As The Wolf marked his 9th and 10th IM shows, they were the first without Nicko McBrain on the drums as the band introduced Simon Dawson to the family (though most knew him from Steve Harris' side project British Lion). Besides the Eddies who came out to have fun with the band, the real show was the new video screen behind the stage and on the amplifiers. It set the backdrop for the song like showing the Eiffel Tower during Murders in the Rue Morgue or a creepy graveyard for Fear of the Dark. But they also created some more interactive movies for epics like Rhime of the Ancient Mariner and Hallowed Be Thy Name. While the boys played lights out, the screen enhanced the experience and understanding of the lyrics for folks from the front row to the back of the house. Two truly magic nights in Stockholm which only left us wondering when (and where) would we see our heavy metal heroes again.
