Grab your coziest blanket, because in this episode of Cozy Conversations, The Sister Project's very own Lauren and Michelle are serving up a nostalgia-packed buffet of laughs, memories, and a few deep thoughts (because balance). From childhood movies and quirky family traditions to turbulence in the skies and the mysteries of Amelia Earhart, these sisters weave their way through stories that remind us why looking back often helps us move forward. Along the way, they dish on Stephen King, the art of cozy home décor, and even how Western fashion made a surprise comeback. As always, Lauren and Michelle bring their Midwestern humor, candid storytelling, and signature cozy perspective to the mic—proving that nostalgia isn't just about the past, it's a tool for connection, resilience, and maybe even a little sanity. So pour yourself a martini (Lauren's Friday ritual), light a candle (preferably one of theirs), and press play. This one's for anyone who loves finding the magic tucked inside old memories and shared laughter.Resources: Lizzie Selle StudioWinning With WyattFollow Us!Shop Our Seasonal Candle LineCheck Out Our Website!Thank you to our sponsor, Helping Hand.

In this episode of the Cyber Uncut podcast, Daniel Croft and David Hollingworth talk about NSWEduChat, a virtual Charlie Kirk, the impact of a cyber incident disrupting airports across Europe, and how Australian not-for-profits are getting a new tool to face a rising tide of ransomware attacks. Croft and Hollingworth open proceedings with Instagram's new AI age assurance checks then talk about the new AI tool being rolled out to NSW public school students and how promising it looks. The pair also discuss the ramifications of creating a deepfake of Charlie Kirk to address packed crowds at US megachurches in the wake of his murder and about a data leak on a website set up by American conservatives to out anyone speaking ill of Kirk. They also share an update on the Jaguar Land Rover hack which is still disrupting production in the UK and walk through a ransomware attack that has crippled a string of major European airports. Finally, Hollingworth and Croft find some good news, with NSW enacting legislation to tackle harmful deepfakes and a service offering cyber attack simulations to the not-for-profit sector, which has experienced a surge in malicious activity so far this year. Wim Hof-This is an exploration of how memory techniques can shape character. Based on a lesson between Grandpa Bill and his granddaughter Adah, this experience shows how daily mnemonics—mental shortcuts—can help us practice complex virtues like empathy and generosity until they become second nature.A Lesson in the LibraryThe journey begins with a simple, everyday moment: a college student struggling with a problem, and a grandfather's gentle guidance. This is the story that sparked the lesson. The ObservationAdah was in the campus library, hunched over her laptop. A classmate she didn't know well was at the next table, staring blankly at a complex Java coding problem. Adah saw the classmate's shoulders slump, and a frustrated sigh escaped their lips. The PromptGrandpa Bill sat down beside her. "That look on her face... it reminds me of a lesson we need to create a mnemonic for today. Today's lesson is a 'two-in-one' special on Empathy and Generosity."The InsightUsing the mnemonics he provided, Adah looked at her classmate again. She realized the stress wasn't just about a coding problem—it was about frustration and feeling lost. She saw the problem from a new perspective. The ActionRemembering the two mental images, Adah turned to her classmate. "Hey," she said softly, "that's a tough one. I just learned that same code. Do you want me to help you debug it?" Her classmate looked up, surprised and relieved. The lesson was complete. The Mnemonic ToolkitGrandpa Bill's method combines two powerful memory systems: the Major System for converting numbers to sounds, and the Person-Action-Object (PAO) system for creating vivid, memorable stories. The Major System: Numbers to SoundsThis system links numbers (0-9) to specific consonant sounds. This is the foundation for creating memorable words from numbers. Click a number below to see its sound.0123456789Select a number to learn its sound. The PAO System: Creating the StoryNext, we use those sounds to create a memorable Person-Action-Object (PAO) trio. This turns an abstract concept into a concrete, visual story. Click the cards to see how Adah's mnemonics were built.VirtueEmpathy(Click to deconstruct)Number 3 = 'M' SoundPerson: MedicAction: MappingObject: a Mood"A Medic is Mapping a Mood."VirtueGenerosity(Click to deconstruct)Number 9 = 'P'/'B' SoundPerson: PilotAction: ProvidingObject: a Pair of Helping Hands"A Pilot is Providing a Pair of Helping Hands."Put it into PracticeNow it's your turn. Read the scenario below and think about how empathy and generosity can be applied. Click the buttons to reveal how Adah might approach the situation using her mental toolkit. The Scenario:You overhear a friend talking about how stressed they are. They have a big presentation coming up, but they're also working a part-time job and are completely overwhelmed and falling behind schedule.Apply EmpathyApply GenerosityEmpathy in Action (The Medic):Instead of just hearing "I'm stressed," you try to map their mood. You recognize it's not just about the presentation; it's the feeling of being trapped and exhausted. You understand their perspective beyond the surface-level problem.Generosity in Action (The Pilot):Knowing how they feel, you offer a pair of helping hands. You could offer to run through the presentation with them, help proofread their slides, or even just bring them a coffee. The help you provide is specific because your empathy guided you.". This storybook is for an 18-year-old reader and explores how memory techniques can shape character.

In this episode of Cozy Conversations, Michelle gets real about her decision to put down the booze and pick up something a little lighter (shoutout to Athletic Brewing Company and their delicious non-alcoholic beer). This week, Lauren and Michelle are coming to you from their brand-new, in-home studio—aka the frunchroom (if you're from Chicago, you know). After years of podcasting remotely, the sisters are cozied up on the couch, laughing, chatting, and extra giddy to be back face-to-face.Inspired by an article Lauren recently read, the sisters dive into the concept of being “pre-annoyed.” You know that little tick of irritation you feel before something even happens? Yeah, that. They explore why we do it, share their own hilariously relatable stories, and chat about ways to combat the habit so it doesn't take over your mood.Of course, it wouldn't be Cozy Conversations without sharing what they're reading, watching, and listening to this week. Expect a mix of inspiration, giggles, and maybe even a little therapy session disguised as sister banter.Bonus: This episode is extra cozy on video. "I spend a lot of time making deliveries around here, so I have my little spots I know I can park." --Owner-operator Jason Shelly, speaking to knowledge borne of more than two decades' experience serving customers in Amish markets on the East Coast Those words were among the first owner-op Jason Shelly spoke when he talked to Overdrive Editor Todd Dills in early August attendant to reporting on his longtime one-truck business, Overdrive's 2025 Trucker of the Month for August: https://www.overdriveonline.com/trucker-of-the-year/article/15753418/trucker-of-the-month-jason-shellys-multistop-reeferhaul-niche He'd gotten parked up for the call mid-run on his regular route through the Washington, D.C., area, among the many routine destinations for his multistop reefer-haul business. It sets the scene, as it were, but also demonstrates the expertise he's built through consistency through the years, through specialization in that now 20-plus-year run loaded with fresh meat bound for those Amish markets. In this week's Overdrive Radio edition, sit in with Shelly as he tells the story of how he proved his invaluable nature to the customers starting with a partner serving a premium pork producer, then following through with consistent customer service as demand grew and grew and grew for the product over those decades. Headquartered in Pennsylvania in the town of Telford today, owner-operator Shelly's legacy is certainly a work in progress. He's got plenty of working years ahead of him, but he's been nothing if not outgoing in his efforts to lend the benefit of expertise to those coming up behind him. As experience has shown, those relationships then grow to the point of mutual business benefit, too, as the Trucker of the Month feature about Shelly last week illustrated. Owner-operator Kris Bair, a decade and more Shelly's junior, calls him a mentor, no doubt, a sounding board for ideas and questions. Bair also bought his first truck, a restored 1980 A model Kenworth, from Shelly, with private financing worked out between the both men. For the very brief moment Shelly thought he was going to be potentially getting entirely out of trucking when he and his business partner sold to a larger operation, Bair then traded that W900A back to Shelly for his longtime runner, a 2000 W900 outfitted with a custom Double Eagle big bunk. Does Shelly still have that W900A in his stable today? Dills asked the owner-operator. "I upgraded and financed it for another" young trucker looking to get his start in business. "I'm not looking to get in the finance business" by any stretch, said Shelly, "but I figure everybody needs to get started, and I had some really good guys in my life that helped me get started." He's been able to be that helping hand up the ladder, so to speak, for the generations of owners behind him "several times over the years," he added. Hear his story, in his own words, in this Part 1 of our talk with Shelly on the podcast today. Shelly's Trucker of the Month nod for August puts him in the running for the 2025 Trucker of the Year award, sponsored for the year by Bostrom Seating, who's putting a new seat on the line for the ultimate winner. You can enter your own or nominate another deserving business for the award at https://OverdriveOnline.com/toptrucker.

For this "Summer Friday" we've put together some of our favorite conversations this year:Hua Hsu, New Yorker staff writer, professor of English at Bard College and author of the memoir Stay True (September 2022), discusses what college students lose when ChatGPT writes their essays for them and what that says about our evolving understanding of the purpose of higher education.Jessica Gould, education reporter for WNYC and Gothamist, shares her reporting on the deal struck between Big Tech and The American Federation of Teachers which offers artificial intelligence training and software to teachers in New York City public schools.Peniel Joseph, professor of history and public affairs and director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of Freedom Season: How 1963 Transformed America's Civil Rights Revolution (Basic Books, 2025), talks about his new book, an examination of the impact of events in 1963 on the struggle for civil rights -- from MLK's “Letter from Birmingham Jail” to the assassination of JFK.From our centennial series, Bob van der Linden, commercial aviation curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, looks at the past 100 years of civilian air travel.Listeners share the best, maybe even most surprising, times they've been helped or helped others, inspired by an article for The Atlantic titled "A Wedding Reveals How Much Help Is Really Available to You," by Julie Beck. In this week's cozy catch-up, Lauren and Michelle dive deep into two topics that had them thinking, laughing, and nodding in agreement: Taylor Swift's highly anticipated appearance on New Heights and the powerful, perspective-shifting book Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker. They unpack Taylor's surprisingly relatable take on caring less and how refreshing it was to hear her talk boundaries and the beauty of not giving a damn. From there, the convo shifts to Quit Like a Woman—a must-read that examines the sneaky grip alcohol has on women's lives and how liberation can sometimes come in the form of putting down the wine glass. An עוזר is an “assistant,” but it could also mean “he's helping” – a verb in the present tense. How are you supposed to know which one it is? Guy teaches us how to work it out from the context, and he explains what initials religious people jot on every piece of paper they write on. In this episode of Cozy Conversations with The Sister Project®, Lauren and Michelle dive into Robin Sharma's The Deep Magic of Consistency—a little book packed with big wisdom and, dare they say... kind of life-changing. They explore how sticking with something (even when it's wildly unglamorous) is actually one of the most powerful forms of self-respect. Plus, they call out the biggest consistency killer of all: your phone. Yep. That little device stealing your dreams one scroll at a time? Time to set some boundaries. The conversation gets real as the sisters open up about grief—specifically, how deeply it weaves into motherhood. Being a mom without your mom is a heartbreak all its own, and they share what it's like to reach for someone who's no longer there. It's tender. It's honest. And it's a reminder that grief doesn't go away—it just shows up in new ways (often when you least expect it).As always, there's plenty of cozy, a healthy dose of humor, and unfiltered reflections on life, motherhood, distractions, and staying true to what matters most.Hot Topics: Hurricane Katrina - The Race Against Time (Hulu), Naked Gun, and toddlers.Resources:Lizzie Selle StudioFollow Us!Shop Our Seasonal Candles!Check out our website! This episode is sponsored by Helping Hand.
Southeastern Wisconsin was hit very hard by flooding and we open the show up with Jane's experience, as well as the listeners out there who were affected. If you can, please reach out to someone and offer your washer/dryer or the shower, something to help in their moment of need. Then, Pat Kreitlow joins us to talk about the flooding, how this is the new normal and what state and local governments must do as preventative measures going forward. We also discuss the invasion of DC by the Felon President and how the distractions now must getting bigger, which could do lasting harm. In this episode of Cozy Conversations, Lauren and Michelle dive into the everyday magic of carving out a life beyond the roles of parent, partner, and professional. From caffeine rituals to lakeside musings at Diamond Lake, they reflect on the quiet joy of doing something just for you - whether it's a hobby, a passion project, or simply getting lost in a good book without being interrupted by a toddler asking for a snack... again. With their signature blend of humor, honesty, and sisterly banter, they discuss the importance of maintaining a sense of self - especially in the beautiful chaos of motherhood. You'll hear reflections on parenting challenges, organization hacks, and how creativity (and a good dose of 'me time') can help you feel more human. They also spotlight a local artist whose story reminds us that art, passion, and community can be powerful tools for healing and self-expression. And yes, there's a bit of pop culture, a few wheezy laughs, and reminders that cozy doesn't just mean candles, it means living a life that feels like you.So pour a cup, step outside for a stroll, or hide in your closet for some peace and quiet, and enjoy the convo.Hot Topics: Perfect Wife (HULU), The Gilded Age (HBO), and Charlie Kirk.Resources:Lizzie Selle Art GalleryAlzheimer's AssociationFollow us!Shop Our Seasonal Candles! This episode was sponsored by Helping Hand.
Today I am joined by Anne Cynar! Anne is an e-commerce entrepreneur based in New York City. She is the founder of Pickleball Prep, a manufacturer of pickleball paddles, bags, apparel and gifts. Prior to founding her company, Anne graduated from Yale University in 2000 and worked at The Corcoran Group in New York City. She stepped away from her career in 2010 to focus on family and raise her children. Coming back to the corporate world almost 15 years later with a fresh perspective, she created her company in January 2024. As a mother of two with a lifelong passion for sports, wellness, and nutrition, Anne has always believed in the power of movement to support a healthy lifestyle, foster self-discipline, and build community. She created her company to encourage outdoor time, human connection, and healthy movement. In addition to adult paddles, she also made sure to design kids' paddles, to support families who want to play together, move together, and make amazing memories together, across all generations. In this episode, Anne and I talked about her decision to stay home while her kids were little, why she chose pickleball, the beginning stages of owning a product based business, why it's never too late to follow your dreams, and so much more! The federal spending bill calls for a reduction in Medicaid spending by an estimated $930 billion over the next decade. The shared federal-state health program currently provides insurance coverage to more than 70 million Americans with low incomes. Effects of the cuts will not only be felt by low-income Pennsylvanians, but through the state's hospitals and even nursing homes. The Trump administration is holding up nearly $7 billion dollars in federal funding that Congress had already approved for educational programs. Pennsylvania and other states were slated to get the money on July 1st. The State Department of Labor and Industry continues to offer support to workers impacted by the idling of the Cleveland-Cliffs Steelton plant. Assistance has included transition information and a job fair. Two Pittsburgh universities are among those working to understand the impact artificial intelligence is having on jobs. The study aims to get ahead of technology shocks that may change how people work. Developers in Pennsylvania who want to skip the line for certain environmental permits can apply through a new program from the state Department of Environmental Protection called Streamlining Permits for Economic Expansion and Development, or SPEED. A Dauphin County judge collapsed while riding his bike and was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead last Friday. Judge Michael J. In Centre County, efforts to strip control of a troubled rural water company from its longtime family owner have hit another roadblock, again delaying a permanent fix to years of unreliable service. Rock Spring Water Company and owner J. Roy Campbell recently rejected a $65,000 offer from nearby State College Borough Water Authority to buy the private system, according to reporting by our partners at Spotlight PA. Nine people were rescued from the Swatara Creek by the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department on the 4th of July. It happened near the Hershey Dam, a low-head dam operated by Pennsylvania American Water. In the early 1900s, laws restricted Black people and immigrants in the US from renting or buying property in Coronado, California. A Black man named Gus Thompson (who'd been born into slavery) had purchased land earlier and built a boarding home in Coronado before the discriminating laws were passed. In 1939, Gus rented to an Asian family, and eventually sold the land to them. Nearly eighty-five years later, after selling the property, some members of the Asian family are donating their proceeds from the sale to help Black college students. They’re also working to name a center at San Diego State University after Gus and his wife, Emma. Leviticus also speaks of what it means to treat others well. God instructed His people, “Help [the poor] as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you” (25:35). He instructed the people to treat each other well and fairly, especially those in need. Out of reverent “fear” (v. 36) for Him, they were to help those who’d fallen on hard times and weren’t able to take care of themselves. They were to treat them just as they would treat a “foreigner and stranger” (v. 35)—with hospitality and love. Gus Thompson and his wife helped a family that didn’t look like them. In return, that family is blessing many other people. Let’s extend God’s compassion to those in need as He helps us reveal His love for them.
