Listen as the guys draw from the worlds of performance psychology, business management, and philosophy to try and make some sense of the chaos that is daily life. Kris has also recently completed the Conscious Warrior System pilot study. Over the course of 8 weeks, George and Matt have been working to implement and test the system as a way to enhance Kris' performance- both as a human and a professional. How can we create an epigenetic map to optimise our gene expression for a lifetime of sustained wellness? In part 2 of my fascinating conversation with Dr. Kenneth Pelletier, we talk more about genetics and how we can change our gene expression. Find out how positive and negative thoughts influence gene expression, and more! Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: How you can change your gene expression The links between blood markers and the microbiome The 7 biochemical pathways What causes oxidative stress The biology of belief Key Takeaways: The push toward actual life expectancy is much more determined by what we do rather than what our genes are that we inherit from the moment of birth. There are seven major biochemical pathways in the body. And behind these biochemical pathways are a finite set of genes that influence that pathway. So as the gene becomes expressed or not, the pathway becomes activated or not, the change shows up in our blood chemistry, and the blood chemistry, in turn, shows up metabolically in the body organs and in the biome. Methylation Inflammation Oxidative Stress Detoxification Immunity Lipid metabolism Mineral metabolism When we know what our genetic predisposition is for lipid metabolism, we can make more informed decisions about our diet. The positive emotions -- hope, love, compassion, optimism, generosity -- have a direct, positive, and enduring impact on the epigenetic expression. When you have the negative emotions -- anger, fear, hostility, aggression, negativity -- all of those suppress and alter the biochemical pathways in a negative direction, so you get greater inflammation, greater oxidative stress, poor lipid metabolism, and excessive methylation. There are certain adult diseases that once they progressed to the stage of a disease, they’re hard to alter. We can slow the progression, sometimes even reverse the disease, but once it’s in extreme onset in our senior years, it’s very, very hard to alter it, so not all things are going to be malleable. Action Steps: When you go to a grocery store, no matter what the product is, buy the one with the shortest label. If it has 3 ingredients, buy it; if it has 20, don’t. Practice meditation. From an internal state of awareness, strike a balance that’s more optimistic and more positive. Do genetic testing and understand your biology, your biochemistry, and your epigenetic markers. Track your epigenetic markers and keep them within an optimal range. Dr. Kenneth Pelletier said: “The purpose of meditation is to enhance our ability to recognize the negative emotions and move toward the positive emotions.” “Even if we have advanced disease… we can have a major impact on its progression, our life expectancy, the quality of our life, independently of the state of the disease.” Thanks for listening! How are purpose, energy, and resilience interrelated? How do they impact individuals and organisations? Bestselling Author Ben Renshaw shares stories and insights on the powerful intersection of these three things. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The definition of purpose Purpose in the context of leadership What drives purpose The three key characteristics at the core of resilience Where people get their resilience from The energy crisis within organisations and individuals Key Takeaways: There is no one single definition that you can put your hat on when it comes to purpose. However, there are some themes that are absolutely consistent that run throughout the definitions and one of them is meaning. Everybody has their own personal philosophy in life, but it’s absolutely fundamental and within our gift to assign meaning to what happens for us. From an individual perspective, meaning is fundamental. How we connect in today’s age is split between technology and relationships, and at the heart of relationships is the need for people to have a sense of belonging. As a result, purpose plays into that. We have a great capacity for adversity as human beings, and when we can learn and grow with that and actually come back stronger and better, that’s a real mark of resilience in action. Energy is a fundamental ingredient for our existence, and you can draw a huge amount of energy and sustenance from your own sense of purpose. Therefore, keeping yourself on purpose has a great impact on your energy. Before you make external changes, you need to address what’s going on internally. When you look at human motivation, the deepest need is to have a sense of value and to be recognised. Well, every day, you’ve got the opportunity to value someone else, to recognise them, so start there. Action Steps: Explore: When are you at your best? And what do you really need to be at your best over time? Find out for yourself where you get your resilience from and reflect: Where are you today, and where would you like to be? What’s the gap? Find one or two things that you really want to focus on that will support your resilience. Make energy a learning curve by reflecting on where you get your energy from and what energises you. Ben said: “When you’re really on purpose, there’s an effortless quality about it. It’s not that you have to really try hard. It may take a huge amount of effort to get there but I think when you have that level of awareness, you are then more likely to experience a state of flow…” “There is always a psychological contract between an organisation and an individual… As an individual, do not rely on the organisation. Take ownership for your own well-being. Yes, the organisation has a responsibility, but at the end of that day, that’s within your gift.” Thanks for listening!  Perception is never a passive process to take in the objective truth of the reality around you. In every moment, you are making educated guesses to construct an internal, conceptual understanding of the world. You frequently mistake this conception for the genuine article. You take this for granted. Isaac Lidsky went from being a successful teenage actor on TV to losing his sight and learning to reassess every unconscious assumption he had about life as a result. Isaac contends that going blind the way that he did is one of the best things that ever could have happened to him, as he learned to see his life beyond the illusions of his mind that would have kept him a prisoner of bad luck and circumstance. As Isaac began to lose his sight gradually over the course of more than a decade, he gained uncommon insight into the layers of meaning his mind automatically added to his perception. As micro blind spots formed in his vision, his brain would do everything it could to immediately compensate for them, often with wildly inaccurate guesses (such as perceiving a urinal as a sink in a bathroom). The mind is always attempting to sort incoming stimuli into the categories it knows. When the old categories we carry are not adequate for new types of information, we run into conflict with reality. We cease to be able to communicate with each other. We make terrible choices about what to do with our lives because we cannot align our actions with what is real. As Isaac had to learn how to reinterpret his most fundamental perceptions of the world, he took less and less for granted about the way his mind worked. For that reason, he is thankful for the new outlook being blind gave him. Even in communicating with other people, there are so many signals we take for granted in the subtle realm. We may completely overlook body language, tone, etc., or rely on them too much and form faulty assumptions from what we think we perceive in the many nuances of how someone presents themselves. The easiest way to clarify the true meaning of communication is to break concepts down to their simplest possible terms (“explain like I’m five), or clearly outline the premises behind an evaluation. If a blind person were to enter a building having been told an inaccurate layout of its structure, his false impressions would conflict with his experience and make it impossible for him to get where he was trying to go. Instead, if he went in knowing nothing, he would be able to derive the truth of the situation through his own unbiased observation. The same is true with everything we ever do in life, as we are all blind and, yet, mostly unaware of our disability. We refuse to draw new categories when our blindness creates obstacles, and so we suffer without end.   Isaac Lidsky: www.lidsky.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Lidsky   Eyes Wide Open by Isaac Lidsky: https://www.amazon.com/Eyes-Wide-Open-Recognizing-Opportunities-ebook/dp/B01HCGYXZW/   Isaac Lidsky “What reality are you creating for yourself?” TED talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/isaac_lidsky_what_reality_are_you_creating_for_yourself   Travel As Transformation by Gregory Diehl: http://amzn.to/2fDzgkM   Man’s Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl: https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl-ebook/dp/B009U9S6FI/   Isaac Lidsky on The Doctors explaining his blindness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kezluf7I_5M   Isaac Lidsky playing Weasel Weasel on Saved By The Bell: The New Class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM13axKEkDY
