This week's guest is the Emmy award-winning American journalist Kate Fagan. Kate started out playing college basketball before making the move into sports journalism. She worked for the American cable channel ESPN (for brits, that's THE sports channel in the US) and wrote the number 1 NYT bestseller, What Made Maddy Run. Then, just before she turned 40 and at the top of her professional game, Kate took a hard left. She stepped away from the career that made her famous, moved to Charleston and married her wife Kathryn Budig. Now she's written a novel The Three Lives of Cate Kay that pushes all the buttons. A dissection of success and ambition, and the true cost of living a lie, it was Reese Witherspoon's first bookclub pick of the year. While Kate was on the Edinburgh leg of her book tour, she came to hang out in my flat and ply Sausage the cat with Dreamies (no cash has changed hands but he's always open to a conversation!) While she was here we discussed the moment she was bitten by the ambition bug (and how she's still struggling to shake it off), the lack of female sporting role models when she was a young athlete, coming out at 30 and The stories we tell ourself about what it means to be a successful human. We also chatted age dysmorphia, crossing the 40 threshold and the conversation she wishes she'd had with her mum. She also introduced me to the concept of TODs. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. In today's episode I talk about the detrimental effects of perfectionism on mental health and performance, particularly among girl athletes. We'll discuss the pressure society places on individuals, especially girl athletes, to meet these high standards. You'll learn the importance of shifting your mindset, focusing on giving 100% effort rather than striving for perfection. I also share tangible strategies to counteract perfectionism, such as embracing mistakes and giving yourself permission to be imperfect. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with former collegiate athlete, coach, and COO of The Hidden Opponent, Leeann Passaro. We explore what the Hidden Opponent is and its mission to raise awareness of student-athlete mental health. Leeann explains how a friend's suicide introduced her to mental illness as a child, before then struggling herself with anxiety and self-confidence in high school and college. These experiences prompted her advocacy for student-athlete mental health that we talk about today. We discuss the far reaching impacts of toxic team cultures on everyone involved, even after stepping away from sport. Leeann opens up about her negative experiences in college with her coach and offers up advice to athletes for maintaining good mental health. As well as normalizing mental health struggles, we emphasize that health is out there and you can find a happier place! Leeann and I talk about the good and bad sides of social media, and its influence on student-athlete NIL deals. We leave listeners with actionable advice for achieving and maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit, as well as resources like The Hidden Opponent for further support and community. I read a book that changed the way I looked at mental health. What Made Maddy Run, a true story written by ESPN reporter Kate Fagan outlining the tragic death on an All-American athlete and her battles with mental health. I personally connected with this book on some of my own struggles and thought others have to hear this because what if they feel like this too?
"I have to trust that I have something I want to say, and just double down on that." Kate Fagan is one of today's most important voices in women's sports. She is the best-selling author of three books — and is best-known in the running community as the author of What Made Maddy Run, about University of Pennsylvania runner Madison Holleran. Kate spent seven years as a columnist and feature writer for ESPN, she was a regular panelist on ESPN's Around the Horn, and she was host of Outside the Lines. Today, she writes for Sports Illustrated, and is co-host of the Off the Looking Glass podcast. In this conversation, we talk about Kate's road to writing greatness, including why she never really wanted to be on TV, the compromises she made to herself along the way, and her time as a Division-1 basketball player struggling with her sexuality and identity while at the University of Colorado Boulder. She talks about the process of writing Split Image, and later writing What Made Maddy Run, and the emotions involved in both. For episode 18 of The School of Unlearning podcast, I sit down with author and journalist, Kate Fagan. Kate and I discuss the state of mental health in sports, her recent book, “All the Colors Came Out” and her relationship to surrender in work and in life. Kate is genius at noticing whats interesting and creating a story worth listening to, I think you'll love what Kate brings to this episode. In this episode, you will learn: How the book, “What Made Maddy Run” shaped the conversation around mental health in young women and in sports How athletes struggle to lose perspective and get into flow state. What Kate's superpower was growing up How noticing what is most interesting is Kate's superpower as an adult How Kate feels about the state of sports media today Why the conversion around women's basketball “being more fundamental” is in some ways stiffalying the creative and playful part of the game. Having swag on the court and off has nothing to do with being fundamental - both can exist. How Kate has learned to redefine what quitting meant for her at ESPN and also in her Dad's fight with ALS. How strength and grace exist during times of surrender. How sports can allow more space for surrender How the Las Vegas Aces are blending team dynamics and individuality for a more cohesive and healthy team Kate's journey with listening to her body About Kate: Kate Fagan is an Emmy-award winning journalist and the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of WHAT MADE MADDY RUN, which was a semi-finalist for the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting. In this episode we speak with Kate Fagan, Emmy-award winning journalist and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author. Today's essay, also available as a video. Picture this. You've scrolled through your camera roll and chosen three photos from your weekend that you really like. You take a few moments to select the right filters to make the images really pop. Then you make it to the final page. You're one step away from sharing your photos with the world. If you could just come up with the right caption, you'd be golden. Your creative mind starts churning. You need something that sticks out, that might get a laugh. Something clever, unique and original. You type one out. “No, that's not funny,” you tell yourself. Or, “No, that sounds corny,” and “No, that doesn't fit my brand.” You struggle to find something that your followers will like. You throw around a few more ideas but just can't land on the right one. So you close the app and forget this ever happened. Why did you do that? No, why do we do that? I'll tell you. I signed up for a Myspace page in 6th grade. Then Facebook two years later, and Twitter a year after that, and then Instagram the next year. Vine had its moment, and TikTok seems here to stay. We like to say the opinions of others don't matter. We'd like to think that we're fully confident in ourselves, that a like or a favorite means nothing to us. That the number of views don't matter. But then we post a photo. The notifications begin rolling in, and we get a rush. It's a drug. We share something on our Story and check the analytics to see who's viewed it, who's shared it, who's visited our profiles. Not just once, but several times throughout the Story's 24-hour existence. Yeah, keep saying people's opinions don't matter. Of course they matter. We've practically been raised on this social currency. Likes and favorites and clicks and views are forms of approval, of validation. Everything we share needs to hit a certain number for us to feel good. And if that photo or tweet doesn't perform as we had hoped, we take it down. We can't possibly let a tweet with just one like exist on our page, right? I'm beginning to change my way of thinking. Instagram is meant to share photos. It's a place for artwork. Van Gogh and Picasso never stopped to consider if the world would approve of their work. No, they just painted what was in their hearts, in their souls. If I find a cool flower and want to share it with the world, who says I can't? It won't cut through the algorithms, but who really cares? So let's stop worrying about curating the perfect feed. It doesn't exist. If we all are truly ourselves, and not portraying someone who we aren't or wish to be, the world will be a better place. The toxicity that social media breeds would cease to exist. Be yourself. Not someone else. Moving forward, I'm going to post things that make me happy, not you. And I hope you join me in doing the same.
In the Season 3 opening episode, Symantha joins Alysa to discuss Detroit’s former disgraced mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, who recently had his 28 year federal sentence commuted by President Trump. We talk about the various phases of scandals that ends with Kilpatrick’s federal conviction as well as whether or not 28 years is an excessive sentence for the crimes committed. Former ESPN on-air personality, writer and New York Times bestselling author of What Made Maddy Run, Kate Fagan, has lived many seasons. A fiercely-competitive athlete as a kid playing pick-up basketball alongside her dad (and dominating on the court), she went on to play Division 1 ball for C.U. Boulder, before turning pro. But writing kept calling her back, Fagan eventually stepped out of the limelight of the court, began to write and just never stopped. Her first book shared Kate's coming story. Her second, What Made Maddy Run, is a revealing look at the sometimes crushing weight we so often place on young adults in the spotlight (and they place on themselves), and what we might do to make things better. Along the way, Kate also fell in love, got married, and more recently, has been navigating the news and reality of her lifelong basketball partner, her dad, being diagnosed with ALS. Kate has so much to share about the importance of showing up for those you love, the thousands of tiny decisions that can change a life, the intersection between media, women's athletics and fans, and the power of valuing your own compass throughout it all.Check out our offerings & partners: Stitch Fix Kids: Get started today at StitchFix.com/kids/goodlife to try Stitch Fix and get an extra 25% off when you keep everything in your box! We know that food can play a huge role in healing our bodies and spirits, but what about exercise? Finding yourself in a new professional sport in your 40s might not be as simple as changing your diet, but Joshua Stevens did it and hasn’t looked back. Joshua is an ultra-marathon trail runner who ran his first 50K on his 44th birthday after being told he wouldn’t ever run again. Before he was spending 24 hours on a treadmill for charity, he spent 24 years in the army, which led to two spinal surgeries and opioid addiction. After reading Eat & Run and watching the documentary Unbreakable, Joshua tapped into his competitive nature and hasn’t stopped running since. He joins Dotsie and Alexandra to share the painful journey that led him to finding peace on the trails and fostering empathy on his plate. You’ll hear how he pulled himself out of addiction, went all-in on running, and went down the rabbit hole of plant-based eating. Plus, hear how his performance has gotten even better since making the switch. Don’t miss this inspiring episode! What we discuss in this episode: - What you can do if you were disappointed in the April 24th episode of the Amazing Race - The tragedy that led to multiple surgeries and the Purple Heart for Joshua - How Eat & Run and Unbreakable: The Western States 100 inspired Joshua to start ultra running when he wasn’t sure he’d be able to run again - What happened to land Joshua dealing with opioid addiction, and what we’re getting wrong about the opioid conversation - Did Joshua replace his addiction with running? Hear how he was able to quit cold turkey and why he says you must always be running toward something - How eating plant-based fosters your empathy and why Joshua says it’s a way to “pay rent” back to the planet - The amazing results Joshua saw in his performance and injuries after making the switch, and why he started by cutting out dairy - Why Joshua ran on a treadmill for 24 hours to benefit the Herren Project and their film The First Day - Joshua’s advice for anyone struggling with depression and addiction, including to read the powerful book What Made Maddy Run - Follow Joshua on Instagram at @tumbleweedultra. I've been following one today's two guests, yoga superstar Kathryn Budig since I first started doing yoga in high school. She was my yoga idol. Over the years I've read her recipes, bought her books, and watched her talks. Today's other guest and Kathryn's now wife, sports journalist and author, Kate Fagan came into my life more recently when my friend Rose introduced me to their podcast Free Cookies a few years ago. Instantly, I fell in love with their dynamic, the subject matter they covered, their humor, and eventually their free relationship advice or as they call it, cookies. My love of them as a couple led me to get to know & love Kate and her work individually as well, in this episode we talk about the important book she wrote last year, What Made Maddy Run and her own impressive career as a sports journalist. I loved speaking with these two and could have talked to them for hours. We recorded this conversation just a couple days before their wedding, which is why it's a bit shorter than other episodes but think of this one like what they say about a mini-skirt--covers everything but will leave you wanting more. We both read a book recently called "What Made Maddy Run: The Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teenager," about a collegiate athlete who committed suicide half way through her freshman year of college. While we don't describe the way she died, we do talk about the feelings and stresses that she felt leading up to her death, as well as Ian's own experiences with considering suicide. It's a heavy episode, so just be aware before you listen. K&K head to Mexico, but not before a hopeful sit-down with Jamie Tworkowski on the importance of honesty and asking for help. Kathryn then interviews Kate on her upcoming book, "What Made Maddy Run," discussing suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Finally, a thank you to Cookie Monsters for an incredible first season.
Kate Fagan is an ESPN sports reporter and author. She recently wrote the book titled, What made Maddy Run. After I read it I asked her to come on the show. The book is about Madison Holleran, who was a college freshman that appeared to have it all. She was a University of Pennsylvania track athlete, a great student and she had a ton of friends and family that loved her dearly. According to her Instagram feed, her life looked perfect. That’s why Maddy’s death by suicide shocked everyone around her. Kate dives into Maddy’s story and sheds a different light on mental health. We talk through the role social media may have played along with other factors. Kate helps us understand the struggle of young people suffering from mental illness today. Kate talks about a Why Not Now? moment that instilled fear and how she's grateful for that feeling. Kate shares her experience in writing the book, What Made Maddy Run. After a great deal of research, Kate talks about the fact that there isn't one solo factor that caused Maddy's situation. Kate and I talk about the role social media plays in the overall mental health of our society. What keeps Kate up at night? Pirates or Ninjas? Who's tougher according to Kate? What advice would Kate tell her younger self?
Can a podcast be live? Sort of? Maybe? Brian gives it a try this week with Kate Fagan from ESPN, the author of one of the best books he's read all year. Fagan is the author of “What Made Maddy Run,” a poignant look at college, college athletics, social media, mental illness and more told through the lens of Madison Halloran. During her visit this week to SUNY Oswego (where Brian teaches), she sat down with Brian to talk about the book and about writing. Kate and Brian talk about how she first heard about Madison's story and walks through the reporting and writing process of both an ESPN The Magazine article and later, the book. Kate answers a question she expected to hear more frequently than she did, how writing Madison's story has changed how she uses social media and how she took care of herself while writing such an emotional topic. Along with the heavy issues, Kate and Brian also talk about what she learned from being on the 538 Hot Takedown podcast, how she found out about Hamilton before basically anyone else and also discusses why she hates Aaron Burr (the song. Not the guy.) Special thanks to Jeff Bradbury and SUNY Oswego for the production help and to Dan Roberts for helping set this up.
Spoiler alert, Joanna is out of town so the boys naturally hold a book club in her absence. At (5:43) Kate Fagan of ESPN joins us to discuss her book What Made Maddy Run, where the conversation weaves around several topics including (7:45) what made her want to write the book and (15:53) social media and digital communication. At (21:58) we discuss Madisons love hate relationship with running which leads into a discussion about what the NCAA is doing to provide coaches with more help to support mental health issues. At (29:50) Kate talks about her own emotional investment throughout the course of writing the book. At (35:00) Kate talks about the responsibility an author has when writing about depression and suicide. At (49:58) Docs is excited about the solar eclipse which boggles the mind of Farley.
Kate! Kate Fagan, who still exists in the depths of our hearts as our Eddie Jordan/Doug Collins era Sixers beat writer favorite (we remember Deep Sixer), joins the podcast to talk about her new, excellent book, What Made Maddy Run, and her time in Philadelphia. We also discuss the Sixers playing on Christmas, and Spike's weird online exchange with Ben Simmons about his consumption of morning Chinese food.
In Hour 2, Dave and Matt take a look back at Tom Brady's career as he turns 40, and discuss how he would have done outside the Patriots system. Former NBA Player/Front Office member Rod Higgins comes on to talk Lavar Ball and Dwane Casey's comments on Toronto as a NBA city. Kate Fagan of ESPN also joins to talk about 'What Made Maddy Run'
