Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2026 56:04

The Armor That Made You Successful Is Holding You Back   You hit the goals. You climbed the ranks. You built the resilience, the discipline, the thick skin. But somewhere along the way, you stopped asking whether the version of you that got here is the version that will get you where you actually want to go. This episode is for the high achiever who suspects the armor they are wearing has quietly become the thing limiting their next chapter.  Rocky Lalvani sits down with Victoria Pelletier, a woman who went from a childhood marked by abuse and poverty to becoming a COO at 24, only to discover that the "Iron Maiden" persona she had built to survive the boardroom was costing her the relationships, trust, and fulfillment that real leadership demands. Victoria shares how she made the deliberate, uncomfortable pivot from command-and-control toughness to what she calls whole human leadership, and why that shift unlocked levels of success her armor never could.    In This Episode:  How childhood adversity created the drive for success and the armor that came with it  The moment Victoria learned her "Iron Maiden" nickname was not a compliment  Why your definition of success must evolve as you do  The false choice between being right and being rich  Whole human leadership: what it means and why corporate culture still resists it  AI in the workplace: what is real, what is fear, and what is just a corporate excuse  Why stepping into your zone of discomfort is where the real growth happens    Key Insights:  The same traits that propel you to the top can quietly isolate you from the people and the purpose that make the top worth reaching.  Incentives drive behavior, and the exceptions leadership makes are what everyone is truly watching. Values on the wall mean nothing without accountability in action.  Confidence is often equated with competence, but real strength comes from letting people see the full human behind the title.  Being right and being rich are not mutually exclusive. Silencing your values for short-term gain is a trade-off that compounds against you.  Everything you have ever wanted lives on the other side of fear. Growth happens in the zone of discomfort, not in the zone of safety.    Money Learning:   Nobody taught Victoria about money. Not her family, not school, not even the bank she worked at early in her career. Her adoptive parents declared bankruptcy twice and spent more than the little they had. School offered trigonometry but nothing about budgeting, saving, or building wealth. Even when Victoria earned her securities license and learned to manage other people's money in banking, the fundamentals of personal financial discipline were never part of the curriculum. Everything she knows about money she built herself, starting with her first job at age eleven. Her story is a powerful reminder that for many high achievers, the wealth mindset that drives them was not handed down. It was forged from watching what not to do and deciding to build something different.    Why This Conversation Matters:  Leaders are under more pressure than ever. AI is reshaping workforces. Employees are demanding more humanity and transparency from the people above them. And the default response for most executives is still the same one Victoria relied on in her twenties: put on the armor, push through, do not let anyone see you struggle. Victoria's story is a direct challenge to that instinct. She is proof that the leaders who will thrive in what comes next are not the ones who absorb the most pressure without flinching. They are the ones willing to lead as full human beings, to build trust instead of compliance, and to tell the truth even when it is uncomfortable. This is not a conversation about soft skills. It is a conversation about what durable, high-impact leadership actually demands when the old playbook stops working.    About Victoria Pelletier:  Award-winning executive leader, #1 best-selling author, in-demand professional public speaker, corporate executive, board director, entrepreneur, #1 social seller/public brand worldwide per LinkedIn for her F500 employers, sought out for discussions on motivation, Diversity Equity & Inclusion, women in leadership, culture, workforce and more.  "Unstoppable and Dynamic: Born to lead and not to be led."  Overcoming adversity and trauma at an early age built resilience. To learn more, visit www.manufacturinggreatness.com and click here to subscribe to Trevor's monthly newsletter. Now, let's jump in! In today's demanding manufacturing environment, frontline supervisors and plant leaders are expected to deliver higher production efficiency, stronger quality management, and better manufacturing productivity often while navigating workforce pressures and constant operational change. How does leadership resilience influence effective operations management, support burnout prevention, and drive sustainable performance on the manufacturing plant floor? Learn more with guest Dr. Marie-Helene Pelletier, an internationally recognized leadership psychologist, executive coach, and author of the award-winning book The Resilience Plan: A Strategic Approach to Optimizing Your Work Performance and Mental Health. With more than 20 years of experience across corporate leadership, psychology, and governance, she brings a powerful perspective on how leaders can strengthen both work performance and mental health. In this conversation, MH explore how manufacturing leaders can recognize the warning signs of burnout, build resilience strategies that support stronger leadership development, and create environments where teams can improve safety culture, employee engagement, and operational performance. The discussion also highlights practical insights that help plant leaders lead effectively under pressure while supporting both team performance and long-term workforce development. 00:54 — Manufacturing leaders from plant managers to frontline supervisors face constant pressure to improve KPI management, production efficiency, and operational results. 01:17 — A real-world example of plant leadership balancing production planning, supply chain management demands, and work-life balance at home. 01:38 — Resilience defined as the ability to navigate adversity and grow stronger, an essential capability for burnout prevention and sustainable leadership in manufacturing operations. 02:27 — The challenge of maintaining performance when pressures increase across production management, supply chain management, and workforce development responsibilities. 02:33 — Why the "just push through it" mindset often fails as leadership responsibilities evolve and operational demands grow more complex. 05:36 — Turning routine performance management activities into opportunities for workforce development, talent retention, and leadership development. 05:40 — Reframing performance reviews as coaching conversations that strengthen employee satisfaction, career growth, and engagement within manufacturing teams. 05:53 — Using change management thinking to transform required processes into opportunities for leadership growth and stronger team performance. 06:35 — Recognizing how leadership stress impacts communication skills, decision-making, and team morale across manufacturing operations. 06:56 — Chronic stress reduces cognitive performance, problem solving ability, and communication skills key capabilities for effective plant leadership and operations management. 08:41 — Continuous improvement tools like lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, value stream mapping, and the 5S methodology improve processes, but leaders must also focus on burnout prevention. 08:59 — Burnout prevention should be treated as seriously as safety culture, quality management, and process optimization in manufacturing organizations. 09:36 — Cognitive overload can negatively affect leadership behavior, communication, and performance management across production teams. 10:41 — Psychological safety strengthens safety leadership and supports a stronger safety culture on the plant floor. 10:50 — Teams that feel psychologically safe are more engaged, contribute ideas for process optimization, and help reduce burnout risk. 11:47 — Manufacturing organizations often hire people for their hands, but unlocking the full potential of their brains and ideas drives production efficiency and smart manufacturing. 12:02 — Every manufacturing team operates within a broader system shaped by operations management, leadership behavior, and organizational culture. 13:08 — Workplace culture and climate directly influence workforce development, talent retention, and employee satisfaction. 13:59 — Frontline leaders can influence culture locally through stronger communication skills, coaching skills, and leadership development practices. 14:07 — Leaders can influence systems through HR partnerships, training programs, and organizational initiatives while protecting their own resilience. 16:07 — High-performing leaders often push themselves harder to achieve KPI management targets and production goals, increasing burnout risk. 16:38 — Sustainable leadership requires recognizing that intense production periods should remain temporary rather than becoming permanent habits. 17:13 — Organizational support and leadership alignment are critical for effective plant leadership and operational performance. 17:14 — Simple leadership behaviors—such as checking in with team members can strengthen engagement and trust. 18:09 — A real-world resilience story illustrates how changing conditions can increase risk when leaders fail to adjust their approach. 20:24 — Environmental changes similar to shifts in supply chain management, production planning, or demand can quickly increase operational risk. 20:49 — Recovery and support during high-risk moments highlight the importance of teamwork and safety leadership. 21:24 — Leaders become vulnerable when depleted, communication breaks down, and planning discipline disappears similar to failures in operations management systems. 22:16 — Manufacturing leaders often underestimate how their own capacity changes under stress, affecting decision-making and leadership performance. 23:34 — Growing awareness around burnout prevention, workforce well-being, and leadership sustainability is reshaping manufacturing culture. 24:26 — Building a stronger workplace culture starts with simple communication habits that strengthen psychological safety and trust. 24:50 — Staying curious about improving resilience helps leaders maintain strong decision-making, better work-life balance, and sustainable leadership. 25:51 — Curiosity and continuous improvement thinking support leadership development just as lean manufacturing supports process improvement. 26:43 — Additional resources for building resilience and leadership skills support modern manufacturing leaders navigating Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing environments. 26:49 — Closing reflections focused on building stronger Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes Jen Fisher, author of Hope Is the Strategy: The Underrated Skill That Transforms Work, Leadership, and Wellbeing. In project management circles, we often hear the phrase "hope is not a strategy." Jen challenges that assumption, arguing that real hope is not wishful thinking at all. Instead, it's a practical cognitive process that can help leaders navigate uncertainty, pressure, and change. In the discussion, Jen explains how hope requires three elements: clear goals, multiple pathways to reach them, and the agency to believe we can influence outcomes. You'll also hear her personal story of realizing she was languishing under constant performance pressure, and how a candid conversation with her boss sparked the beginning of a healthier and more hopeful way of working. Along the way, Jen shares practical tools such as possibility journaling, energy ledgers, and hope spotting. She also explains why vulnerability can be a leadership superpower and how simple language shifts can turn hope killers into hope builders. If you're leading teams and projects under constant pressure and looking for practical ways to sustain both performance and wellbeing, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "How would I describe myself? I'm a hope dealer." "Hope is not flimsy. It's not whimsical." "Real hope actually requires action." "What drives hopelessness is feeling like there's nothing you can do." "Hope is the belief that tomorrow can be better than today." "67% of managers said that they've never been trained in how to manage other people. We put humans in charge of other humans, but we give them very little skill and training in how to lead." "You can perform when you're languishing, but the question is really why should we or why would we want to." "For the first time in my professional life, I actually felt seen and heard and valued." "Toxic positivity only makes people feel worse." "Possibility journaling is really thinking about what might be possible here." "Vulnerability is proof that you're human." "When people are feeling uncertain, they want to connect to somebody that feels human." What if birth control didn't come with daily hormones, side effects, or shame — and instead supported pleasure, autonomy, and confidence? This week Lisa welcomes Saundra Pelletier, CEO of Evofem Biosciences and the force behind Phexxi, the first hormone-free, on-demand prescription birth control. Together they explore the intersection of sexual health, empowerment, midlife identity, and why women deserve both protection and pleasure. This conversation moves beyond fear-based messaging into joy, agency, and informed choice — especially for women navigating perimenopause, postpartum years, or simply wanting an alternative to long-term synthetic hormones. What We Talk About Why traditional hormonal birth control may impact libido, mood, and identity The concept of a “Hormone Holiday” Perimenopause + still needing pregnancy protection Why women are conditioned to live with discomfort Teaching sons empathy and body literacy Pleasure as a revolutionary act Empowerment vs. fear-based sexual health messaging Reclaiming desire and confidence after 40 Key Takeaways You deserve options that align with your body and your life stage. Her story of overcoming unspeakable odds to live a life of #NoExcuses is both moving, and incredibly inspiring.   Victoria draws from her 20+ years in corporate senior leadership at companies like IBM and American Express to deliver engaging, inspiring keynotes to audiences across North America.   Socials: Website: https://victoria-pelletier.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@VictoriaPelletierUnstoppable  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/victoria_pelletier_unstoppable/?hl=en  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/victoriapelletier/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Victoria.Pelletier.Unstoppable/   Summary:   In this episode of The Heartbeat for Hire Podcast, host Lyndsay Dowd welcomes Victoria Pelletier, a powerhouse executive who became a COO at just 24 and has held senior leadership roles at IBM, Accenture, and American Express. Victoria shares her harrowing journey from a childhood defined by abuse, addiction, and trauma to becoming a global voice on "healthy resilience". She discusses the pivotal moment when she realized her "Iron Maiden" nickname was a sign that her professional armor was actually distancing her from her humanity. The conversation explores how leaders can shed their protective shields, embrace vulnerability, and build cultures where people can succeed without breaking.   Key Takeaways:   - Resilience is a Muscle: While some resilience may be innate, it is primarily a muscle that can be developed and strengthened through intentional work. - Armor vs. Humanity: Wearing a "shield of protective armor" to appear strong can often be perceived by others as a lack of emotion or empathy. - Humanize Your Leadership: Small, deliberate actions—like spending the first few minutes of a meeting on personal connection—can bridge the gap between performance and humanity. - Embrace Discomfort: Stepping into the "zone of discomfort" is necessary for high-performers to learn how to show vulnerability and lead as their whole selves.   Episode Chapters:   00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview 00:52 Meet Victoria Pelletier: A Story of Resilience 03:02 Victoria's Early Life and Challenges 05:07 The Iron Maiden: Leadership and Resilience 07:25 Balancing Strength and Vulnerability in Leadership  14:25 Maintaining Authenticity in Corporate Leadership 16:53 Closing Remarks and Future Plans 23:00 Final Thoughts and Farewell

Special Guest Victoria Pelletier www.victoria-pelletier.com   Welcome back to another episode of Profits Unleashed, where I inspire coaches and consultants to use podcasting—both as guests and as hosts—to grow their business with authority, impact, and authenticity. In this episode, I'm joined by the one they call The Turnaround Queen and the CEO Whisperer, Victoria Pelletier. Victoria is a corporate executive, board director, keynote speaker, TEDx speaker, globally recognised DEI advocate, and the #1 bestselling author of The Power of Whole Human Leadership. With over 25 years of experience leading large-scale business transformations, this conversation is powerful, honest, and deeply insightful. Victoria shares her non-traditional journey into the corporate world—starting in banking while planning for law school, and quickly realising she thrived in leadership and complex environments. What stood out to me most is how clearly she articulated that transformation isn't just about fixing numbers—it's about leadership, accountability, and trust. We dive into what really holds businesses back, and time and time again, it comes down to people. Victoria doesn't shy away from the hard truths: loyalty can sometimes disguise fear of making difficult decisions, and leaders must ensure the right people are in the right roles for the current stage of the business. Culture, she reminds us, is a by-product of leadership behaviour—not a buzzword. We also explore the evolving role of AI, and I loved Victoria's grounded take. AI isn't about replacing humans—it's about elevating them. The future belongs to organisations that combine technology with human power skills like problem-solving, storytelling, and emotional intelligence. Victoria also shares how building a strong personal brand led to one of her biggest wins—being invited to open a TEDx event on resilience—proof that consistency, authenticity, and visibility truly compound over time. This episode is a masterclass in leadership, transformation, and telling the truth with integrity. Key Takeaways from This Episode I learned that real business transformation starts with leadership, not just strategy I was reminded that trust must come before truth, especially when delivering hard messages I now see AI as a tool for amplification, not replacement I believe authenticity and storytelling will matter more than ever in an AI-driven world I was inspired by how consistency in brand-building creates long-term opportunities

Epigenetics are all of the influences that determine our health, wellbeing, and life expectancy after the sperm and ovum unite. Epigenetics plays a crucial role in determining health and life expectancy – 95 % of health, illness, and life expectancy are due to factors other than our genes. The role of diet, stress, physical activity and social support significantly influence genetic expression. There are no longitudinal studies for biohacking. Don'tgo into the periphery and engage in questionable practices. Sort hope from hype.Equal criteria for evaluating the outcomes of alternative and conventional medicine must be applied; both should be held to the same rigorous scientific standards to ensure their acceptability and effectiveness.
