July 12, 1988. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Four-year old Barbara Jean Horn disappears from the front yard of her home before her nude body is discovered inside a cardboard box resting on a curb in the same neighbourhood. Nearly four years later, a suspect named Walter Ogrod, who had lived across the street from Barbara Jean's residence, is arrested after he confesses to her murder and after two trials, he is convicted and sentenced to death. However, Walter claims his confession was coerced by corrupt police detectives and there are numerous allegations of misconduct and serious issues with his conviction. In 2020, after a new review is performed of the case, Walter's conviction is overturned. While he is finally released from death row and fully exonerated, no one else is charged with the crime. Last week, in Part One of our series about the murder of Barbara Jean Horn, we shared the basic facts about the case. This week, in Part Two, we will attempt to analyze and break down this crime by sharing all the different theories about what happened, as well as explore some other wrong conviction cases which took place in Philadelphia during this time period and involved the same law enforcement figures who put Walter Ogrod in prison. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Philadelphia Police Department's tip line at (215) 686-TIPS (8477). The case of Barbara Jean Monaco is a mystery that time cannot erase.  On August 20th, 1978, Barbara Jean hit the road with her sister and 2 friends.  Their destination? Virginia Beach - a sunny getaway to celebrate Barbara's milestone 18th birthday.  The trio checked into the Aloha motel, ready for a week of fun and freedom.  But that celebration took a dark turn.  When Barbara Jean left the motel to meet up with a bartender she'd planned a date with, she vanished without a trace.  She never made it to her date and hasn't been seen since. Over four decades have passed. Witnesses have come forward, suspects have been questioned, and theories have swirled.  Yet the question lingers: What happened to Barbara Jean Monaco?  Listen as we dive into Virginia Beach, the case of Barbara Jean Monaco, and how to stay alive on vacation. I had a lot to learn because Barbara Dane's career spanned most of the 20th century and a good chunk of the present one. And, I was grateful for the study.Starting out as a teenager from Detroit,  Barbara Jean Spillman began singing with Louis Armstrong, and went on to become a sensation in the world of jazz. But, she was too big for that container - she went on to become one of the most influential folk music activists and label owners in history. Upon learning of her passing last week at the age of 97, it seemed fitting that we revisit that special archival episode. Listen, and be amazed!"Bessie Smith in Stereo" said jazz critic Leonard Feather in Playboy magazine when Barbara Dane burst onto the scene in the late '50s. In 1958 Time magazine said of her: "The voice is pure, rich...rare as a 20 karat diamond."  To Ebony magazine, she seemed "startlingly blonde, especially when that powerful dusky alto voice begins to moan of trouble, two-timing men and freedom... with stubborn determination, enthusiasm and a basic love for the underdog (she is) making a name for herself...aided and abetted by some of the oldest names in jazz who helped give birth to the blues..."  The seven-page Ebony article--their first feature story about a white woman (Nov., l959)-- was filled with photos of Dane working with Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Clara Ward, Mama Yancey, Little Brother Montgomery and others...

Well, Hello.  I didn't see you there.  So glad you're here!  Tanya and I just thought we didn't have a lot to talk about today, and then we got started and couldn't stop.  Caitlyn Clark made history this week and is playing at noon, so needless to say, Tanya is in a big hurry to finish up and cheer on her girl.  She dreamed about Sam PIttman and shows up in Razorback swag to celebrate only 50 days until Razorback football season.  I'm hurrying due to an electrician coming this afternoon to check on some weird things happening over here.  We ooh and ahh over Leighton's appearance on the podcast last week.  Reece says her quote, “he was creepy age” will go viral.  Our July 4th celebrations were dynamite and I bring in some delicious food items as my cute and fun.  Our new segment that we are affectionately calling, “Let's talk TV” includes some old and even some incredibly old classics, inspired by Verna, as well as some new releases (at least to me). Tanya got me hooked on Reba so I'm off to see what Barbara Jean is up to.  Stay classy.  Jasa   Superlatively Yes website Superlatively Yes on Patreon   Superlatively Yes Instagram Page Superlatively Yes Facebook Page   Jasa's Instagram Jasa's Facebook   Tanya's Instagram Tanya's Facebook   Cute and fun:   Simply Fuel Protein Balls   Trader Joe's organic olive oil popcorn   Orville Redenbacher's white popcorn   Organic Virgin Coconut Oil   Skinny Dipped Lemon Bliss Almonds   TV:   Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders - Making the Team 8-10 Ashley Prohazka.   Reba   Fire Country   Will Trent   Hillbilly Elegy - JD Vance   Mother of the Bride   The Women (1939)   The Reluctant Debutante   Owning Manhattan

Today I'll talk with Patrick about what he remembers of his mother and the chaos surrounding her death. That information led to the arrest of a man who wasn't the Green River killer, but a man who was out on parole for another violent attack. Why You Have to See the April Solar Eclipse, According to an Airstream-Loving Astronomy Expert

Where will you be on April 8, 2024? In case that date isn't burned into your brain, it's the day the sun, Earth, and the moon will completely align, creating a total solar eclipse that will sweep over a section of the United States. It will plunge cities around the U.S.—from Austin, Texas, to Buffalo, New York, into darkness for up to four minutes and 27 seconds and, according to our guest today, will be “the greatest science event in human history.”  That's because it's going to be one of the most accessible celestial events to happen in recent times: The path of totality crosses some of the most populated areas of the United States, and astro-tourists will flock to places like Texas in droves. Scott Roberts, today's guest, will also be there, guiding a small group of people through the event at a ranch in Leakey, Texas.  To be honest, I wasn't planning on traveling for the eclipse, but after interviewing Scott, I started to wonder if I'm missing out: He likens viewing an eclipse to some of his peak life experiences, nearly up there with witnessing childbirth. He's seen four solar eclipses since he started photographing them as a young man, and now he's a kind of eclipse evangelist.  Maybe you, like me, didn't make plans to see the eclipse. Or maybe you've had your plans locked in since 2022. Either way, Scott has a nugget of wisdom for you, from how to view your first solar eclipse (hint: just enjoy it) to the reason we should all celebrate the sun's rise every day.  He's also an avid Airstreamer and has been traveling around the country in a 1968 Overlander named Barbara Jean after his travel-loving mom. He shared how he downsized to the Airstream lifestyle and how this kind of travel allows him freedom to follow his celestial obsessions.  Resources Read this week's show notes, including a full transcript of the episode. Girls Gone Hallmark is a twice-weekly Hallmark review podcast. Today, Megan and Wendy, review the Lacey Chabert sequel "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up." With its excellent ensemble cast and razor-sharp dialogue, could this sequel sleigh the first movie? Download and listen now! About Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up Director - Maclain Nelson - His 14 directing credits include this year's "A Heidelberg Holiday" and of course the OG "Haul Out the Holly." Writer - Chris Sey  - With only 6 credits, Christopher has only written one previous Hallmark movie, "You're Bacon Me Crazy." He was not the writer on the first "Haul out the Holly." Christopher Sey's incredible efforts during the pandemic. While researching him, I learned that his wife is an ER doc at a hospital in Los Angeles. Along with some friends, he founded a non-profit called DINE ONE ONE that not only provided meals for healthcare workers, but also supported local restaurants.  "Haul out the Holly: Lit Up" was filmed in Utah in September 2023. Lacey Chabert (Emily) - With 175 acting credits it's safe to say Lacey is more than just the queen of Christmas. She also appeared in "A Merry Scottish Christmas" and "The Dancing Detective" this year in addition to reprising her role as Gretchen Werner's in a Walmart Black Friday commercial. Wes Brown (Jared) His 48 acting credits include a ton of Hallmark, but believe it or not we've only reviewed two of his movies here on GGH. Wes dropped his Christmas Jazz album this year titled "My Kind of Christmas." Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned) - Stephen wins the prize for most acting credits of an Actor Appearing on Hallmark, if such a prize exists, with 290 credits. What hasn't he been in? He was a series regular on "The Goldbergs," "One Day at a Time," "Californication," "Silicon Valley" and "Heroes" and we're glad to have him on Hallmark. Related Podcast Episode: Girls Gone Hallmark reviews the original "Haul Out the Holly" from 2022. Melissa Peterman (Pamela) Melissa always lights up the screen in any role among her 36 acting credits. She appeared in "Baby Daddy" on Netflix and of course her role as Barbara Jean on "Reba" is iconic.  Ellen Travolta (Mary Louise) - yes, that Travolta! She has 52 acting credits and appeared in series like "Charles in Charge" and "Joani loves Chachi." In addition to reprising her role as Mary Louise on "Haul Out the Holly," she's reprising a 30 year old role on "General Hospital" as Gloria Cerullo coming up soon. Jennifer Aspen (Jane Johnson). She has 84 acting credits including 44 episodes as Daphne in the series "Party of Five" (with Lacey Chabert). Seth Morris (Joe Johnson). He doesn't have as many acting credits as Stephen Tobolowsky, but with 138 the dude has been in some stuff. Including, "The Big Leap" (a FOX one-season series), HBO's "Veep," Netflix's "Love," "The Good Place," "Parks and Rec," "The League" and so much more.  We got a quick cameo from Eric Mabius who plays Allan, Pamela's husband. Who Was in Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up? Peter Jacobson (Albert) Laura Wardle (Belinda) Kenneth Cummins (Jimmy Johnson) Eliza Hayes Maher (Jessica) Carrie Morgan (Gail) Walter Platz (Bob) Lila Clark (Nicole) Charlotte Kay Witt (Helen)

After months of investigation with no strong leads, the case went cold. Four years later it was reopened, and Walter Ogrod, a young man with autism spectrum disorder who had lived across the street from the family at the time of the murder, was brought in as a suspect.Ogrod bears no resemblance to the composite police sketch based on eyewitness accounts of the man carrying the box, and there is no physical evidence linking him to the crime.
