After accepting his first head coaching job in early February, new Urbana High School varsity football coach Zach Shoemaker is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Shoemaker tells host Greg Swatek why high school football has always been such a big part of his life. He talks about witnessing the birth of the Urbana football dynasty in 1998 at Byrd Stadium. He was 10 years old at the time, alongside his father, Roy, a football coach himself. He talks about why the Urbana program always appealed to him so much. He also chats about playing quarterback and safety for Boonsboro High School and later safety for Shepherd University. He talks about why defense and playing physical football is such a big part of his philosophy. And he discusses being deployed in Afghanistan in 2012 as part of the U.S. Marine Corps and how that shaped him both as a person and a coach. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy stops in to discuss the state basketball quarterfinals, featuring the Frederick and Middletown boys and the Oakdale girls, as well as Oakdale's second straight championship Maryland Student Hockey League championship.

Hi, I'm Jody Sweetin, and welcome to Season 4 of Awkward Conversations. This season, we provide parents with practical advice on raising happy, healthy, substance-free kids. We'll feature our amazing co-host, Amy McCarthy from Harvard's Boston Children's Hospital, and have discussions featuring our expert guests, including Richard Lucy, a Senior Prevention Program Manager from the DEA, and Joseph Bozenko, a Senior Research Chemist from the DEA. They will discuss critical topics such as the current fentanyl crisis, the importance of parent-child bonding, and the significant role of education and awareness. We highlight resources like GetSmartAboutDrugs.com and One Pill Can Kill, and discuss harm reduction strategies like naloxone. Remember, the only wrong conversation is the one you don't have with your kids. Key Takeaways: Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.    It is being increasingly laced into counterfeit pills and other drugs, leading to a rise in accidental overdoses.    The DEA is working to raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl through its One Pill Can Kill campaign.    There are resources available to help parents talk to their children about drugs, such as Get Smart About Drugs.com. Can you be a progressive representing a legislative district that is deeply conservative? In politics, it is often the belief that it's not possible. But there are moderates and conservatives who've represented more liberal districts (and states even!).This is a question that my friend and guest, Sammi Brown, challenged when she ran for office as an unabashed young progressive woman of color in a West Virginia legislative district that had gone double digits for Trump in 2016.Raised in a Union household Sammi would work multiple jobs to pay her way through college and grad school (and would earn both her Bachelors and MBA from Shepherd University). A career in media, would eventually lead her into organizing on behalf of her state's working families, advocate for the Healthcare of our population's most vulnerable, and train movement leaders across the country to carry on this work in their respective spaces.I had the privilege to work with Sammi on this race. As a young progressive woman of color in West Virginia, she was viewed as an “underdog” from the start, she would proceed to knock over 3000 doors, earn the endorsement of many progressive organizations and ultimately FLIP the 65th District in the West Virgina House of Delegates in 2018. As a result, she is credited with the State's largest “comeback” in a single cycle: covering a 30 point spread. She talks about her journey to political service to the community in which she was raised, what it looks like to embrace your voice as an elected official, especially when it's in the best interests of your constituents, how she dealt with sexism and racism in political leadership, and more. In "One Pill Can Kill”, hosts Jodie Sweetin and Amy McCarthy are joined by two distinguished guests who shed light on the perilous world of fake pills and fentanyl. Rich Lucey, a senior prevention program manager in the Drug Enforcement Administration's Community Outreach and Prevention Support Section, brings invaluable expertise in drug misuse prevention and education. Joe Bozenko, a Senior Research Chemist at DEA's Special Testing and Research Laboratory, is a global authority in investigating synthetic drug manufacturing. Rich and Joe delve into the chilling potency of fentanyl and its profit-driven motivations, emphasizing the challenges in distinguishing these dangerous pills, even for professionals. They highlight the shift toward obtaining pills through social media, revealing the dire need for awareness and action. The episode also tackles how parents can initiate critical conversations with their children about this looming danger, emphasizing the importance of information over scare tactics. Real-life stories underscore the gravity of the situation, while strategies for parental protection and community-based solutions are explored. Throughout the episode, Joe and Rich's expertise guides the discussion, providing essential insights into this pressing issue.   Key Takeaways: The "One Pill Can Kill" campaign underscores the dangers of fake pills. Fentanyl and fake pills are explained, highlighting the hidden perils within fake medications. Identifying fake pills is a significant challenge due to their visual similarity to genuine ones. Hour 1 Gio was so excited about Max Scherzer's performance last night and summed it up by saying, ‘that guy sucks'. Gio made good money last night betting against him. With all of the bad going on in NY sports lately, this was an awesome sports night. Julius Randle said the Knicks must show urgency now. Gio said he always collapses in a big spot. We talked about the upcoming Knicks season. Boomer feels like the pre-season has been going on forever. Jerry is here for his first update and starts with Trevor Lawrence talking about tonight's game against the Saints and whether he'll play or not. Brian Daboll said Daniel Jones wants to play but they will have to wait for the doctor's evaluation. Mike McDaniel was asked if anyone could do what Tua is doing with this team. Deshaun Watson was asked when he'll be back and he's not sure. Scherzer gave up 5 runs last night to the enjoyment of Mets fans everywhere. Chris Russo talked about taking too many gummies on the plane back from the Super Bowl. In the final segment of the hour, what is the Mets plan for the offseason now that they brought David Stearns in? What are they going to do with Pete Alonso? Travis Kelce had to buy a new house for more privacy now that he's dating the most popular woman on the planet.  Hour 2 Boomer got some more info on Aaron Rodgers and achilles injuries. He seems to be stretching that tendon before it's fully healed, which is not recommended. It could be re-injured again. He is risking his achilles never getting back to normal if he keeps pushing it like he is. Bottom line is he is not playing again this year, even though he and Rob Saleh are acting like it could happen. Manifestation is very real to Aaron Rodgers, but reality is he cannot play football anytime soon. Jerry is here for an update but first we talked about manifesting things and how it's not possible. Justin Pugh got himself a 1-year deal with the Giants and somehow tied Jerry Seinfeld into it. The Astros got to Max Scherzer in the second inning and Gio made money by betting against him. The Las Vegas Aces won the WNBA Championship and the afternoon show was there. In the final segment of the hour, Gio looks at the current odds for teams to win the Super Bowl. We also talked about the rumored story that Caleb Williams wants part ownership of the team that drafts him.  Hour 3 Vegas has in season odds right now with the Jets at 7.5 wins for the season. So they would only need 5 more wins the rest of the way to surpass that. Are the Jets better than the Giants right now? Boomer is calling the Jets over the Giants a ‘lock'. In the final segment of the hour, we had a great time at our B&G live show meeting with more ideas for Schwartzy The Snowman.  Hour 4 We talked about the Vikings and Kirk Cousins parting ways after this season. Boomer said just wait until Justin Jefferson has a different quarterback firing the ball over his head. We talked about MVP odds as it sits right now in the NFL. Jerry is here for his final update of the morning and we talked about all of the backup QBs that will be playing this week. Daniel Jones said he's close to coming back but doesn't know if he'll be good to go yet for this week. Davante Adams doesn't seem to want to be on the Raiders anymore. Deshaun Watson isn't sure when he'll play again. Patrick Mahomes wants to become part owner of an NFL team when he's done playing. Max Scherzer had a bad night on the mound, again. The Astros beat the Rangers. The NBA season is getting underway next week. The Moment of The Day involves Eddie, yarn events and shaving sheep. In the final segment of the show, there is not an obvious knockout pool team. Maybe Buffalo going to New England, but are you really confident in that? Daniel Jones normally plays well against Washington so they better start stacking W's. Who will be the biggest name traded at the deadline? Davante Adams most likely. The afternoon show was in the suite last night at Barclays Center for the WNBA finals. What team could Davante Adams wind up with? Boomer thinks the Lions and that could be a real game changer. Gio said what about the Cowboys?

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Aug. 11  Mercer County prepares for $100 million sports complex…a Morgan County couple achieves their dream of opening a trail store (with a little help from WV SBDC)…and, Ho ho ho! Santa Claus is coming to Cass, so get your train tickets in advance…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVVA-TV –  The Mercer County Commission recently held a public hearing regarding a $100 million Economic Development Authority project that is slated to start construction in 2024. The Ridges Sports Complex and Expo Center will be located right off Exit 9 in Princeton. The complex will consist of multiple sports fields;  a commercial area that will welcome retailers, restaurants and lodging; and a parks and recreation area for walking trails, playgrounds and a dog park. The commission voted to approve the land on which The Ridges will be built to be its own economic district. “It's important to note that no taxpayers are going to have their taxes raised,” Economic Development Authority Executive Director John O'Neal said. “The County Commission is not having to dedicate any money out of their budget for this. This allows us to create a district to allow funding to occur based on future dollars created within the district.” Read more: https://www.wvva.com/2023/07/27/massive-100-million-sports-complex-expo-center-coming-mercer-county/ #2 – From WV SBDC –  Trail Depot is the newest outdoor enthusiast spot in Morgan County. Owners Alex Teixeira and Amanda-Hollins Teixeira saw opening the Berkeley Springs store as an opportunity to spread their love and passion for the outdoors with visitors and locals alike.  “We have the opportunity to fill this store with anything and everything we've ever wanted, but we never got ourselves,” said Alex Teixeira.  To help make their dream a reality, the couple reached out to the West Virginia Small Business Development Center and have been working with two business coaches from the  Eastern Panhandle office. “They filled a niche that wasn't being served,” Business Coach Michael Boyd said. “Berkeley Springs is a mecca for weekend visitors and people who love the outdoors. This shop serves that need and elevates the whole experience in Morgan County.” Business Coach Carol Goolsby, who also teaches at Shepherd University, used her unique position in education and business to connect her students to Trail Depot. The students helped the shop with their inventory and merchandise, supply chain, research, marketing, and more.  “It's been a really valuable experience for Amanda and Alex as a small business starting out and a valuable experience for students as well to be able to work with a real business, helping them build and develop to the place they are today,” Goolsby said. The highly anticipated steam-powered journey will depart from the Cass depot, taking passengers on a ride along the scenic Greenbrier River. The excursion is estimated to last between 75 to 90 minutes and will feature beautifully decorated and heated coaches. On July 27, 2023, Dr. James Broomall gave a fascinating presentation on artifacts taken from the battlefields of the Civil War that helped shape the memory of the conflict. From Col. Elmer Ellsworth's death coat to the shattered tree stump of Spotsylvania, Civil War Americans actively collected and displayed objects of war. These battle pieces appeared in small museums at the turn of the twentieth century to help visitors understand the blasted landscapes from which they came. This talk will explore the lives of artifacts after they were taken from the field of action in order to understand how they informed the construction of memory. Objects with violent histories both contested and confirmed the prevailing discourse of romanticism in the nineteenth century. On the one hand, Americans clung to things connected to death and violence. On the other, Americans projected violence as regenerative to justify bloodshed. Dr. James J. Broomall is an associate professor of history at Shepherd University and the director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, which promotes a dialogue among popular and academic audiences by integrating scholarship, education, and engagement. He is a cultural historian of the Civil War era and has published many articles and essays in journals and magazines, including Common Place: The Journal of Early American Life, Civil War History, and The Journal of the Civil War Era. James is the author of Private Confederacies: The Emotional Worlds of Southern Men as Citizens and Soldiers (2019). He is currently working on a book project titled, “Battle Pieces: The Art and Artifacts of the American Civil War Era,” which explores how historical imagery and military artifacts were used to create representations of violence, war, and death. This lecture is presented in partnership with the Wilton House Museum. "The beauty of upcycling is that it can apply to every stage of the supply chain, from the farm level all the way down to consumers… It's really a mind shift on how we think about food and what is edible and what isn't." —Angie Crone   The global food waste epidemic is no longer a secret. Each year, billions of tons of food are wasted globally, including tons of perfectly edible produce that are lost even before they can reach homes, stores, and eateries. Thankfully, upcycling is now seen as a sustainable way to accelerate innovation and reduce food waste.    Upcycling is a creative approach to turning food waste and food products that may otherwise go to waste into something useful and profitable. Not only does this save food, but it also reduces environmental impacts. With upcycling, we can rethink how we view what is waste and what's being wasted.    In this episode, Justine sits with Angie Crone, the Interim CEO of Upcycled Food Association (UFA). The organization's work is driven by a powerful mission to turn the most authentic economic movement into quantifiable success for upcycled food businesses. To this end, the organization has created the Upcycled Food Standard, a traceable, transparent label for upcycled foods, to identify and certify products that are using upcycled ingredients.    By joining their network of certified business, members can gain a competitive advantage and be seen as credible and trustworthy. Currently, their membership network is made up of upcycled food businesses from 20 countries around the world - from small artisan businesses to large multinationals companies and academic institutions.    Listen in as Justine and Angie talk about the role of upcycling in achieving nutritional security, accelerating innovation through upcycling, differentiating waste and food that's being wasted, the benefits of being Upcycle Certified, and much much more! Meet Angie:  Angie Crone is the Interim CEO Of Upcycled Food Association. A highly creative and motivated change-maker, she holds the ability to build purpose-driven programs from the ground up and shepherd them through the entire implementation process with success.    With great insight into the needs of the organization and its end users, Angie is well-versed in designing value-adding programs, building lasting relationships and ensuring everyone is invested in the process. She has also been part of human rights and environmental standards and frameworks, delivering high-value initiatives, and leading cross-functional teams. Her passion and drive, combined with a dynamic and motivating approach, have enabled her to successfully reach goals time and time again. Her educational background is quite impressive. She holds a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University, a Graduate Certificate in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Military University, and a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management from Shepherd University.    Website Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn YouTube Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 02:41 The UFA Journey 06:33 Accelerating Innovation Through Upcycling 10:32 Rethinking Food Waste 14:46 The Benefits of Being Upcycle Certified 18:20 Road to 300

As a child, Margaret, then called Peggie, walked alone through the hills of Western Pennsylvania imagining tales of wild adventures in mysterious lands. It was there, amidst the fields of corn, waves of wheat, and thickets of the woods, that the seeds of her life as a writer were sown. Following a lifetime of service to others not only as a mother and wife but as a church musician and piano teacher to hundreds of students, Margaret retrieved the volumes of writings she had kept to herself and claimed her true passion—storytelling. In what she terms “the last trimester of my life,” she lives by the motto, If not now, when? In the past decade, she has earned a B.A. in English from Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The stories she pens span the genres of mysteries, historical fiction, and what she has coined, “historical horror,” macabre tales imagined in the lives of figures from the past. Her work has appeared in Sans Merci Literary Magazine, and Boshemia.
