We're back from CrimeCon 2026 in Las Vegas, and we've got stories to tell. The plan for the trip is to hopefully get myself into at least one prison facility, and it looks like the only one I even have a shot at getting into is the East Jersey State Prison, which is currently housing Tariq Maqbool, so I jump on the phone with his cousin who is set to help me get through the gates.Once we have that sorted it's time to officially kick off the trip as I head to Sydney for the first ever Australian Audio Awards, where, well, I have a slight equipment issue before making my way to the bright lights of Vegas to attend the annual CrimeCon convention and for another award nomination. On July 9, 1993, Stephanie Wasilishin, a mother of two, was shot in Sedona, Arizona, with her boyfriend present as the only other adult in the home. Prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence and conflicting accounts from the suspect. Ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, the case has remained unresolved for over three decades, with Stephanie's daughter Nikki continuing to fight for answers into her mother's death. While Trevin and Amanda recover from CrimeCon, our friend Shea from Rainy Day Rabbit Holes stops by to tell us a tale that just might involve an alien encounter. But first, the crew shares what's chapping their asses this week. Shea's husband has terrible dishwasher etiquette and continues wasting valuable dish space. Seven-month-old Emmanuel Haro was reported missing in August 2025 after his mother, Rebecca Haro, claimed he had been kidnapped during a diaper change in a Yucaipa parking lot. That story triggered a community search, media coverage, and public fear. But investigators later said the kidnapping story did not hold up.Emmanuel's father, Jake Haro, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, assault on a child under eight causing death, and filing a false police report. He was sentenced on November 3, 2025, to 25 years to life, with additional time tied to other offenses. Rebecca Haro just pleaded guilty to felony child abuse causing great bodily injury to a child under five, involuntary manslaughter, and accessory after the fact. She was sentenced to 12 years and 8 months in state prison. Emmanuel's body has still not been recovered. I'm recording this short video from CrimeCon because this case has really troubled me. The courts got guilty pleas and Sentences were imposed. But the one thing Emmanuel still has not received is the dignity of being found, recovered, and properly laid to rest. This episode is not about rage for rage's sake. It's about accountability. It's about child protection. Esta es parte de la discusión que Berta Comas Casas tiene consigo misma en el libro True crime. Una mirada al dolor de las demás (Lengua de Trapo, 2026) y a la que nos incorporamos, junto a ella, en este Pol&Pop. El éxito del true crime es el de sus premisas más reduccionistas y escondidas. Ni tan true ni tan crime. Aunque, en sus inicios, el interés del género provenía de su veracidad y aprovechaba la legitimidad de otros géneros, poco comerciales pero pintones, como el documental, la mano se ha ido abriendo a introducir más elementos del thriller o de la industria audiovisual en general y admitir mayores cuotas de ficcionalización de lo real. Como habrán notado alguna vez, esa cosa aburrida de la realidad no se organiza en capítulos ni mucho menos éstos cliffhanguean para que tengas ganas de enchufarte el siguiente. Tampoco los asesinos suelen ser atractivos ni la vida viene envuelta en una locución perfecta. Si hay mucha más creación de la que parece y ésta es artística o expresiva puede tener un pasar porque toda sociedad necesita contarse y componer sus duelos, pero si toda artificiosidad es comercial y vuelve a encajar “lo que ha sucedido” en el canon del male gaze, el dolor de las demás es dinero para los de arriba y patriarcado por doquier. Tampoco el crime en cuestión es todo el crime, sino más bien la porción minoritaria de delitos interindividuales de sangre y sexuales graves que sostienen nuestra idea de la utilidad del sistema penal. Con tal monstruosidad sobre la mesa, cómo imaginar otra forma de lidiar con los conflictos sociales o incluso con la pura maldad. La idea de copaganda (https://www.elsaltodiario.com/metropolice/copaganda-vision-policial-se-convierte-sentido-comun), en la traducción que Sergio García e Ignacio Mendiola hacen de la noción de Alyssa Rosemberg, permite pensar cómo nuestro sentido común del mundo se alinea de forma creciente con el policial. Ya comentábamos en el episodio anterior (https://www.elsaltodiario.com/pol-pop-podcast/criptoprofetas-hipermasculinidad-nueva-derecha-paula-c-chang-andrea-g-galarreta) la capacidad occidental de reforzar instituciones -allí era la masculinidad, aquí el propio sistema penal- afirmando su completa decadencia y documentando todos sus fallos. Mucho más extraño sería encontrar una exploración del proceso de salvaje centrada al capitalismo financiero global de los bancos finlandeses a finales de los 1980s, como hace Rosvopankki (Los invencibles) o una mirada sobre los mundos de Celeste, Succession o Industry que no hubiera pasado por los filtros de The Office o de Euphoria. Todo ello justifica pensar que el true crime tiene un efecto justificativo del status quo. Entonces ¿por qué seguimos con el tema?, como ya hicimos con Mar García Puig (https://www.elsaltodiario.com/pol-pop-podcast/true-crime-placer-ver-culpables). Este es el centro de la preocupación de Berta Comas, que le permite situar el true crime en el proceso de backlash frente a la expansión de las vidas que ha empujado el feminismo. Como mostró Nerea Barjola (https://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/libro?codigo=725382), se trata de un disciplinamiento de la libertad femenina generación tras generación de productos de entretenimiento basados en el terror sexual. Para nosotros la cuestión es si detrás de acercarse a ese entretenimiento no hay también una exploración de la reactividad social ante las nuevas posibilidades de vida, una especie de preparacionismo que interpone un artefacto cultural, una mediación entre el propio deseo y el castigo patriarcal por haber ido demasiado lejos. Y por eso se sigue mirando y en esta tensión lo seguimos discutiendo.

In June of 2002, a 14-year-old girl was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night, from a quiet home in one of the safest neighborhoods in one of the safest cities in America. Her name was Elizabeth Smart. This case has endured for more than two decades, not only because of what happened to Elizabeth, but because of how it happened.
