THE CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly explores the intersections between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. It even throws in the occasional surf or spaghetti Western tune for good measure. Comprised of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards, the group has established a unique, personal connection with audiences. CGTs 14 albums, streamed over 47 million times on Pandora, offer diverse snapshots of the groups mercurial muse. The trios most recent release Masterworks showcases its classical side, with expansive takes on Bach, Beethoven, Arvo Prt, and Schubert. Adam Renn Olenn | December 10, 2013 Until you’ve seen a Chapman Stick performed live, the music it produces sounds too big to be real. A twelve-string electric instrument, it’s sort of like a guitar and a bass fused together, but played with a pianistic tapping of the fingers to activate the strings, instead of plucking or strumming them. And one of the best Chapman Stick players in the world is Tom Griesgraber. Griesgraber first learned of Berklee while taking music lessons as a high school student. After attending a Berklee in LA session, he set his heart on Berklee, but knew he had his work cut out for him to succeed there. Griesgraber began taking courses at MiraCosta college, and soon distinguished himself, tutoring other students, recording, and helping with administrative duties. He then transferred to Berklee, and two years later graduated summa cum laude. Griesgraber has performed with or opened for the California Guitar Trio, the Tony Levin Band, the Dixie Dregs, Adrian Belew, Tower of Power, the Bad Plus, and many, many more, as well as playing the Grammy Awards after-party. He’s currently writing, performing, and co-producing the sophomore album by Rymo of Slightly Stoopid, and plans to tour the U.S. and Europe this spring with his duo, Unnamed Lands, with Bert Lams of the California Guitar Trio.
Guitarist Paul Richards is our guest and we will talk about his work with the California Guitar Trio! With fellow guitarists Bert Lams and Hideyo Moriya, the California Guitar Trio has developed quite a following with its music that intersects between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. Since 1991, the group has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly crisscrosses genres. Paul also studied with Robert Fripp with his Guitar Craft course and actually met Bert and Hideyo studying with Fripp and also touring with Fripp as part of Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists. We will talk with Paul about playing with the Trio, the gear they use, and their music. And we will explore Paul using Fripp's unusual tuning for guitar. It's a great night of tone, gear and technique!

The CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO (CGT) is Bert Lams from Belgium, Hideyo Moriya from Japan, and Paul Richards from Utah. Together, their technical wizardry is breathtaking, as is the wide range of instrumental music the group renders... everything from unique originals to dazzling, cleverly-arranged interpretations of jazz, classical music, and surf rock. The members of CGT met while studying under Robert Fripp and performing with Fripp's "League of Crafty Guitarists." In 1995, CGT toured worldwide with King Crimson. CGTs new CD is called Andromeda. PATTY LARKIN has been redefining the boundaries of folk-urban pop music for 25 years with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising vocals and lyrics. Her songs run from impressionistic poetry to witty wordplay. In 2010, Patty Larkin releases a collectible collection of 25 love songs in celebration of 25 years in the recording industry. Here Patty has reworked 25 of her favorite songs in an acoustic, “unplugged release, joined by friends along the way.
