Michael Jackson's “Thriller” – one of the biggest hit albums of all time - also marks a quantum change in how rock music was marketed and sold. Brought up as part of The Jackson 5, Michael saw himself as an entertainer crossing musical genres and categories. He almost single-handedly made music videos into a serious art form.In those days, with typical video budgets around $50k, the video for “Thriller” had a budget of $1m and a top Hollywood director in John Landis. Total recording budget for the entire album was $750k! Our “Album you must hear Before you Die” is “So”, Peter Gabriel's 1986 blockbuster, produced by Daniel Lanois, an Eno disciple who'd just produced U2's “The Unforgettable Fire”. The hit single from this album, “Sledgehammer” also had a dynamite film clip featuring state-of-the art stop-motion photography. In Jeff's Rant, he is surprisingly gentle to Justin Bieber. Who'd have thought it possible? There's lots in this episode to enjoy. We hope you do! It's the spring of 1985 and Paul McCartney is hard at work recording a new album at his Hog Hill Mill studio. In a shift away from his prior work in the decade, Paul sought to recreate a "band" environment with co-writing partner Eric Stewart, drummer Jerry Marotta and guitarist Carlos Alomar - along with himself and Linda - likely as a reaction to the crumbling critical reaction to his recent projects. George Harrison, meanwhile, was tip-toeing back toward the music business himself, offering up his take on Bob Dylan's I Don't Want to Do It for the Porky's Revenge movie soundtrack. But the undeniable success of this first half of 1985 was John's son Julian, embarking on a mega-successful tour to promote his album Valotte and garnering awestruck reviews in the process... LOST AT SEA, 6min,. Germany, Music Video Directed by Alex Sebastian A fairy tale gone wrong: A woman between two men. http://alexsebastian.de/ https://facebook.com/alexsebastianmuc https://instagram.com/alexsebastianmuc From filmmaker Alex Sebastian: I'm basically a self producing independent rock/pop artist and as such in control of the whole creative process start to finish. First there was the song which was inspired by a friends poem. While I was working on producing song with some great musicians (e.g. drummer Jerry Marotta, who also played for Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney and many many more) I had to listen to it over and over again while out running. Images of a drifting abandoned boat came into my head (The starting image and the ending image.) and I crafted the initial plot. Peter Gabriel, one-time member of Genesis, is an English musician who is renowned for powerful, innovative, "intelligent" music. When Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, after the album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, he stunned fans and critics alike by teaming up with Bob Ezrin (Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper) to produce the album known as “Car”, a disparate collection of songs – including “Solsbury Hill” - with strong riffs, great guitar work, a variety of styles, to establish his solo credentials. His 3rd album, known as “Melt”, broke Peter Gabriel as a world phenomenon. It received great reviews (mostly 5-star) and was much more rhythm-focussed, with songs like “Games without Frontiers” and “Biko”. The album has a lot of “strange” sounds on it, and introduced Kate Bush on backing vocals. It was a high point for Peter Gabriel, who has made other great albums after this but never anything better! Our album to “Hear before You Die” this week is “1999”, Prince's 5th studio album from 1982. This album contains songs that have since become standards - “1999” and “Little Red Corvette” - and highlight his obsession with sex. Prince influenced so many people – as songwriter, musician and studio experimenter. His sound was a key influence on R & B music through to the 90's. “1999” is not the type of album we would normally listen to, but it's just so damn good!References: Prince, “1999, Steve Lillywhite, Hugh Padgham, XTC - “Drums & Wires”, “Black Sea”, “War”, U2, Kirsty MacColl, “An Assassin's Diary”, Arthur Bremer, George Wallace, JFK, Steve Biko, Polaroids, Lewis Morley, Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Marotta, “Ein Deutsches Album”, Johnny Warman, “Walking into Mirrors", “Sledgehammer”, “The Book of Love”, Alan Parker, Hipgnosis, Peter Gabriel.com The Rock TiktokGabriel PlaylistGabriel Concert

December is here and the mood is right! This week we had the extreme pleasure to interview and speak with Drummer, Jerry Marotta. Jerry whose credits are nothing short of legendary started his career working with Orleans ('Still The One'), Hall & Oates, and a lengthy and historic stint with Peter Gabriel from 1977 to 1986. Jerry performed on the first four self titled Gabriel albums. During his time with Gabriel our kid recruited him for "Press To Play" in the summer of 1985. Jerry takes us down memory lane with some tremendous anecdotes, his memory and fondness for Linda and how it was working with Paul at Hog Hill. Episode 6 Peter CasePart I Song Chronicles is proud to present the first of a two-part interview with Peter Case. For Peter, music is an economy of energy, a spiritual economy. His career stretches out over half a century and is still going strong. Through the experiences he's had, the different band line-ups, the travels, the epiphanies, the inspiring companions, he pours vibrancy into each new musical chapter. Case, a native of Buffalo, New York, dropped out of high school when he was fifteen and traveled before replanting himself in San Francisco in 1973. You can see a young Peter in action during this period, in the documentary Nightshift, directed by Bert Deivert, where the director and subject wandered the streets looking for places to play, cash to earn, and food to eat while meeting with people anywhere on street corners and filming. In 1976, he teamed up with two other bandmates, Jack Lee and Paul Collins, to form The Nerves in San Francisco. (Jack was the sole writer of The Nerves song "Hanging On The Telephone" which was later recorded by Blondie). The band moved to Los Angeles and performed in many of LA's punk-era venues, and soon they went on a national tour opening for The Ramones and Mink Deville. They broke up in 1978. photo by Greg Allen The Nerves One Way Ticket - 1977 In 1979, Peter formed The Plimsouls, which, after the release of their debut EP Zero Hour, started building a significant live following in California. They had record deals with two major record labels (Planet/Elektra in 1981 and Geffen Records in 1983). In 1982, "A Million Miles Away" was released as a 12" single and the song was a radio hit in California and in some other regions of the U.S. The Plimsouls Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal (1981) The Plimsouls - Beach Town Confidential - 1983 "The gimmick of the band was to have high standards", says Case. The Plimsouls lasted until January 1st, 1985 and, in this interview, Peter charts the course of the musical changes he made after the band broke up, how songs, stories and words made playing solo appealing to him, despite having to carve out a new audience after losing half of The Plimsouls fans. "I love The Plimsouls, but my life took off in another way. [Playing solo] enabled me to put together a lot of things that I loved...to get away from that strict environment of the four-piece rock and roll band". Throughout his life, he'd seen performers that made deep impressions on him, such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Simon and Garfunkel (with one guitar in 1967), Arlo Guthrie, James Taylor, John Hammond Jr., Dave Van Ronk, Pete Seeger, an under-the-radar folk singer and actor, Cedric Smith (Perth County Conspiracy), Fred Neil, Memphis Slim, Mississippi John Hurt, and more. Like musicians before him, Case would at times have a band ready in different towns but once he realized that what he could do solo was more unique, less turned into more: more range in the story-telling of the songs, more potency in the groove, and it worked. Traveling light is the way to go if you're an independent musician. Even traveling light, Peter grooves heavy. The Man With The Blue Post-Modern, Fragmented, Neo-Traditionalist Guitar 1989 He made a self-titled solo album, Peter Case, released in 1986, on Geffen Records, produced by both T-Bone Burnett and Mitchell Froom. One of the songs on it, "Old Blue Car," was nominated for a Grammy Award. Robert Palmer of The New York Times chose the album as the No. 1 release for 1986 in his year-in-review wrap-up. The album had contributions from Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers), John Hiatt, Jim Kelter, Jerry Marotta, Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds), Richard Thompson, Van Dyke Parks and included songs co-written with Victoria Williams (Peter's first wife) and T-Bone Burnett. 1986 Peter describes having record deals: "When you're on those labels, you know, as you well know, you get that, you get that feeling of wind in your sails. That even on a failure, you're, you know, you're doing a lap. There's a certain amount of momentum that happens on those things that's not anywhere anymore". Torn Again 1995 In 2015, Peter released HWY 62 on Omnivore, an album filled with songs and stories, the blues, and heartfelt singing. That spiritual economy of heart and soul, with the wisdom of his years, makes Peter one of America's treasured songwriters and performers. In this interview, he tells us of the journey he took to get here. If you're a songwriter, when you listen, you'll want to take notes. Peter Case - Hwy 62 2015 Lost Songs & Outside Favorites 2016 The songs used in this episode were used by permission. They are found on the album titled, "Hwy 62". For more info go to Petercase.com

If you were one of those people who read the liner notes on all your records, no doubt you saw the name Jerry Marotta on many of your favorites. From the late 70s til the mid 80s Jerry drummed for Peter Gabriel AND Hall and Oates at the same time! When those gigs came to an end he joined up with the Indigo Girls for a while. Along the way he recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, Tears For Fears, Robbie Robertson, Fee Waybill, Sarah McLachlan, Los Lobos, Cher, John Mayer, and a bunch of others. Jerry is one of those brutally honest interviews and we hear amazing stories about all of these people, as well as the many things he's working on today. This one's another instant classic. You won't believe it! www.jerrymarotta.com
Finally, edition four of Poppies From A Tray arrives hot off the presses, featuring the legendary drummer Jerry Marotta, who has worked with Paul McCartney, Robert Fripp, Kate Bush, Hall & Oates and a multitude more. Perhaps best known among Poppies aficionados for his work with Peter Gabriel in the 1970s and '80s, Jerry has rekindled that music with The Security Project, a great band that brings those early PG albums back to life on stage. He was kind enough to welcome on their tour bus for an interview a while back when they played a show at Trading Boundaries. It's fascinating stuff from a master musician.
In today's professional musical culture, it's imperative to think more and more like a business owner. Not like the "slap entrepreneur on your insta description" business owner, but more like the "how many other income streams can I create to keep me doing what I'm here to do, if I'm meant to do it, and lie awake at night wondering how I'll keep all these plates spinning" business owner. ****Listen to this episode and subscribe to the show: www.richredmond.com/podcasts Our guest for episode 11 is Harry McCarthy. “So” by Peter Gabriel Bruce is excited about this blockbuster hit album. After four solo albums without a name, the record company finally persuaded Peter Gabriel to name this fifth album. So is a synthesizer-heavy album influenced by world music. It shows Gabriel's experimental side, but it was a more approachable album than his other releases, and it was a huge hit in the mid-'80s both on radio and MTV. Gabriel went from a cult star to a mainstream star in the rock genre very quickly with this five-fold platinum album. There's really not a bad track on this album, and the majority of the songs received airplay. Join us as we have a BIG TIME with this SLEDGEHAMMER of an album! “In Your Eyes” This song leads off side two. Gabriel wanted to make it the last song, but the bass line is so strong that it needed to be near the front of the album to give the record stylus room to vibrate. This track became popular after the release of the movie "Say Anything." “Red Rain” Red Rain This track leads off the album. Gabriel wanted it to "crash at the front." Stewart Copeland (Police) does the symbol work at the front of this dark, melancholy song. “That Voice” This one qualifies as a deeper cut. Nice bass work by Tony Levin on this heavily layered exploration of conscience - the voices in your head. “Big Time” Emblematic of the yuppie culture of the ‘80's, this song satirizes the "bigger is better - greed is good” culture of the time. Stewart Copeland (of the Police) is on drums, while Tony Levin is fingering the bass and Jerry Marotta is playing the strings on the bass with drumsticks to give it the "slap bass" sound. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Danger Zone” - the theme from “Top Gun” by Kenny Loggins This tune was a hit from the mega-hit movie “Top Gun” featuring Tom Cruise. It’s actually a good soundtrack! STAFF PICKS: “I Wanna be a Cowboy” by Boys Don’t Cry Brian! Oh, Brian — I mean, Ted! Oh, Ted! Fighting off danger! This one hit deadpan comedy wonder could be heard in all the clubs in 1986. “All the Things She Said” by Simple Minds Rob shares the third single from Simple Minds’ seventh studio album, and it’s a great track. The B-side to the single is a live version of “Don't You Forget About Me,” their most famous song (but one that the lead singer hated). “Touch & Go” by Emerson, Lake, & Powell Wayne goes for ELP...but not Palmer in this case! Cozy Powell takes over percussion duties from Carl Palmer, who was unavailable to reform Emerson, Lake, & Palmer due to his work with the supergroup, Asia. The synthesizer melody is based on an English folk tune called “Lovely Joan.” “No One is to Blame” by Howard Jones Bruce closes out staff picks with this one. Jones originally put out this song on his “Dream Into Action” album. It became a hit after Phil Collins produced the re-recording, and added the drum work and backing vocals. This track appeared on Jones' third album entitled "One to One." LAUGH TRACK: “The Chicken Song” by Spitting Image This number one song in Britain was from a comedy TV show which used puppets designed to look like famous politicians and celebrities. This is where Genesis got their video for “Land of Confusion.” Check out the video.

Lonesome Highway from Ireland said in their review, "The ten tracks are self-produced and jump out of the speakers with lots of quality and rich arrangements. This is one for the real connoisseurs and all songs are written by Fuzzbee with the exception of Voodoo Child (Slight Return) which only Fuzzbee could have the nerve to tackle and turn into his own impressive show stopper. Smooth and full of soul, serious chops and superb musicianship." He has written the score and songs for numerous films, TV shows and commercials, both dramatic & comedic, and plays lots of instruments, including guitar, keyboards, flute, bass, soprano sax, mandolin, vibes and many others. Wearing a slightly different hat, Fuzzbee has performed live comedy & musical improv for many years with The Flying Fannoli Brothers, Off The Wall, Top Tune, Rick Overton, Dan Aykroyd and lots of other funny people, making up lyrics and music in the spur of the moment on audience suggestions. The Security Project, featuring members of King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel’s original band bring the genre-less masterpieces of Peter Gabriel into the 21st Century on their new live album “Live 1”. Seattle-based Trey Gunn and Michael Cozzi join esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta and NY keyboardist David Jameson to harness the core of these songs. Added to the pedigree of these players is the voice of Brian Cummins, whose interpretations add haunting authenticity to the immaculate arrangements. These live recordings are a first – no one has dared take on Peter Gabriel’s material at this level before!
