Recorded live at The Conduit in London in September 2024, Baratunde and Elizabeth Stewart sit down with their friend and longtime collaborator Jon Alexander, author of CITIZENS and co-host of the podcast How To Save Democracy, for a conversation about citizen as a verb: the radical, hopeful idea that democracy isn't something we have, it's something we do. They get into the story we inherited about independence, the older and truer story about interdependence, the four pillars of citizening, and why a moment when so much feels like it's collapsing is exactly the moment to start building. The timing is no accident. On Saturday, June 13, 2026 Jon takes the TED Democracy stage in Philadelphia at the birthplace of American independence, during America's 250th, to make the case for interdependence. A British man crossing the Atlantic to tell us the move is getting back together. Keep practicing democracy. The verb, not the noun. In this episode, HVAC veteran Adam Mufich of National Comfort Institute (NCI) pulls back the curtain on one of the industry's most overlooked problems: the majority of residential HVAC systems in the United States are not delivering the correct amount of airflow. Drawing on decades of hands-on experience, Adam opens up about his own journey from confident installer to humbled diagnostician, sharing the moment he started measuring his systems and realized how much he had been getting wrong. His candor and expertise make this a must-listen for any HVAC professional serious about doing better work. Adam walks listeners through a sobering picture painted by a Department of Energy study covering 44 research projects across the country. The data reveals that between 50 and 93 percent of systems tested moved less than the minimum 350 CFM per ton of capacity, and between 67 and 100 percent of systems leaked more than 100 CFM to the outside. Equipment oversizing is rampant, with some studies showing that up to 93 percent of systems exceed what Manual J calculations would call for. The ripple effects are enormous: compressor failures, blown blower motors, cracked heat exchangers, wasted energy, and homeowners who are simply not comfortable in their own homes. Adam argues that the single most powerful fix is also the most underused one — properly sizing the equipment in the first place. The bulk of the episode dives into two distinct approaches NCI teaches for addressing these problems. The first is the Air Upgrade, a targeted set of repairs focused near the equipment to reduce static pressure and increase fan airflow. This includes reworking the filter system (a commonly undersized 16x25x1 filter can triple the allowed pressure budget on its own), improving duct fittings with lower equivalent lengths, cleaning evaporator coils and blower wheels, adjusting fan speed, and sealing duct joints. The second approach is full Duct Optimization, a more comprehensive renovation that addresses the entire duct system, incorporates Manual D calculations, installs balancing dampers, improves insulation, and uses tools like flow hoods and MeasureQuick to verify that every room in the house is receiving the correct airflow and BTUs. Adam also spends time on the practical and human side of this work — how to talk to homeowners, how to prioritize what matters to them, and how to overcome the very real obstacles that keep technicians from doing thorough airflow work. He addresses everything from fear of opening walls (his solution: build relationships with drywall contractors and offer turnkey repairs) to the simple but powerful mindset shift of treating airflow as something to be measured, not felt with your hand. His closing message is clear: the tools and methods exist, the training is available, and virtually every house in the country has a problem worth solving. The only thing standing in the way is the willingness to do it right. Topics Covered The current state of the HVAC industry based on a DOE meta-analysis of 44 studies Why equipment oversizing is the number one contributor to airflow problems and how to address it How a 50 percent oversized AC system can increase energy consumption by up to 91 percent (per the ASME Journal of Sustainable Buildings) Tools for proper load calculations, including Ample Energy and Conduit apps Why most systems are not moving enough airflow and what the consequences are (heat exchanger failures, compressor failures, comfort complaints) Duct leakage to the outside and its effects on comfort, indoor air quality, and building pressurization The four pillars of NCI's approach: safe, healthy, comfortable, and efficient systems The Air Upgrade approach: targeted repairs near the equipment to reduce static pressure and increase fan airflow The Duct Optimization approach: full duct system renovation with balanced airflow to every room Static pressure profiling: taking four measurements (before/after filter and before/after coil) to pinpoint restrictions Static pressure budgets and how to use them to identify which part of a system is the biggest problem Fan Law 2 as a planning tool to predict system performance before making changes The TrueFlow Grid and its forecasting feature for planning equipment changes Filter sizing and its massive impact on total external static pressure Duct fitting equivalent lengths and how to reduce resistance near the equipment Sealing duct joints and why it adds static pressure that must be planned for The importance of rechecking and adjusting refrigerant charge after any airflow improvement Air balancing with a flow hood to verify delivered CFM at every register Measuring delivered BTUs using tools like MeasureQuick, JobLink, and NCI's ComfortMax workflow Overcoming obstacles: technician buy-in, access to ducts in walls, attic space limitations, and homeowner hesitation Building relationships with drywall contractors to offer turnkey duct repair solutions Why airflow is invisible and why measuring it is non-negotiable To learn more about NCI and its training offerings, visit https://www.nationalcomfortinstitute.com/. There's something many of us long for on the spiritual path—the ability to live with a more open heart. To care more deeply. To give more freely. To love without limits. As spiritual practitioners, we often try to sense into the heart and feel divine or unconditional love, assuming that the more we feel it, the more we'll be able to express it.But what if love doesn't actually work that way? What if love isn't something we can possess at all?In this episode, Craig invites us to explore the possibility that the spiritual path is not ultimately about trying to create more love, but about learning how to get out of the way so that love can move through us more freely.Through guided meditation and reflection, Craig explores what it means to open ourselves to a deeper intelligence and care that may already exist within us.When we approach practice in this way, we begin to discover a love that is much deeper than emotion or attachment. Ultimately, we find that love is the deepest nature of awakened consciousness itself. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. Jim and Chris discuss listener emails on Social Security claiming strategies, IRMAA income adjustments, a listener PSA on the Roth five-year rule, conduit trusts for minor IRA beneficiaries and I-Bond tax reporting, and an inherited IRA passing through a trust. (10:30) George asks about the Social Security “January Rule” and whether claiming in December 2027 or January 2028 would capture the most delayed retirement credits after reaching full retirement age in May 2027. (21:00) A listener who retired early and has been performing Roth conversions asks whether he can also file an SSA-44 based on his wife’s upcoming reduction in work income, even though his conversions have been elevating their household MAGI. (31:00) The guys review a listener PSA clarifying that the fifth year of the Roth five-year rule must be completed entirely—not merely begun—before the holding period is satisfied. (39:45) Jim and Chris take a two-part question on how conduit trusts handle IRA distributions inherited by minor children, and whether the annual interest-reporting election used for EE bonds can also apply to I-Bonds. (1:06:00) A listener whose father-in-law named a trust as the IRA beneficiary — rather than the daughters directly — is getting conflicting advice on whether the IRA funds must be taken immediately or if they can spread the distributions — and the taxes — over five years. The post Social Security, 5-year Rule, Conduit Trusts, Inherited IRAs: Q&A #2614 appeared first on The Retirement and IRA Show.
Murray Kent had no background in electrical conduit fittings when he paid $40,000 for a four-person business that, as he put it, looked like a bit of a crack den. What he did have was Value Builder's 8 drivers -- pinned to the wall next to his desk as a literal road map for every decision he made. In this episode of Built to Sell Radio, you discover how to negotiate a clean exit with no earn-out complications and no equity rollover. You'll learn: Why posting the eight drivers next to your desk changes the decisions you make every day How Murray reduced his biggest customer from 50% of revenue to the low 20s -- and why even that required extra meetings to satisfy the buyer The counterintuitive reason a surprisingly high offer should make you more cautious, not less How Murray turned a proposed earn-out into a simple 12-month warranty holdback worth less than 5% of the sale price Why Murray broke the news to staff in small groups rather than a town hall -- and how he kept each group from spoiling it for the next Why open-book management and profit sharing made his team part of the business, not just employees of it What Murray wishes he had known going in: the one negotiation skill no podcast can fully prepare you for

1. Pakistan Acts as Intermediary in Ongoing Iran-Israel Conflict GUEST: Bill Roggio, Ambassador Husain Haqqani SUMMARY: Pakistan acts as a conduit for messages between Washington and Tehran. While communication exists, neither side has offered a second negotiating position, and Iran continues to demonstrate strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz.,, John Batchelor and his guests discuss the stagnant global situation, noting that while missiles fly in the Iranwar and a Russian tanker heads for Cuba, Pakistan remains a key intermediary. Ambassador Haqqani explains that Pakistan's relationships with both the U.S. and Iran allow for message delivery, though Iran has not formally accepted a mediation role. Bill Roggio notes that Iran is showing its control by selectively allowing ships through the Strait of Hormuz, while the Trumpadministration faces mounting domestic disapproval and a 60-day War Powers Act deadline. If everything in life comes down to people… then here’s the truth most leaders miss: It matters how you lead them. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black breaks down the core of leadership through one central idea: People are the ultimate commodity. Not replaceable. Not transactional. But the driving force behind culture, performance, and legacy. This episode connects four powerful frameworks that explain how people actually work: Hebb’s Law – repeated experiences wire the brain Mimetic Theory – people imitate what they see and desire Social Learning Theory – behavior is modeled and reinforced Attachment Theory – trust and connection shape performance Put simply: People are shaped by what they experience, what they see, and who they’re connected to. That’s why leadership isn’t a title—it’s a loop. Mr. Black introduces the PEC framework: Permission – your actions give others permission to act Example – what you model speaks louder than what you say Culture – the environment reinforces what becomes normal Because people are always watching. And what you do is what gets repeated. This episode also challenges listeners to move beyond survival and success into significance—a life built not around self, but around others. A life where you operate as: A Warrior – fighting for what matters A Leader – setting the standard others follow A Conduit – pouring into others, not just storing for yourself Leadership is not about you. It’s about who you’re building, lifting, and multiplying. This episode also features a timely conversation with Ray Moore of the Exodus Mandate Project, addressing the growing tension around homeschooling and the role of parents, government, and belief systems in shaping the next generation. Because at the end of the day: Better people create better culture. Better culture creates better outcomes. And that only happens when leaders understand… It matters. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It had a lot going against it for this review because I JUST finished Resident Evil 9 (which is newer and spectacular), and it's been 7 whole days since our last "slow motion shooter" game review, but to F.E.A.R.'s credit it left a great impression on me because a good game is a good game.If you haven't played this one, you play as the "point man" on this squad of, I dunno, shooter guys? You're investigating this company that's somehow making telepathic monsters and spend most the game sneaking around killing other shooter guys controlled by monsters. It's better than I described.Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week and carried my uneducated ass through a good review of a great game. Jim and Chris discuss listener emails, opening with listener PSAs on Medicare Advantage HSA reimbursement eligibility, then moving into questions on Social Security beneficiary rules and finishing their look at conduit trusts for IRAs. (7:00) A listener asks whether Social Security benefits can be passed on to a significant other. (28:00) The guys continue from last week with a listener’s multi-part question on whether a conduit trust should be structured to distribute RMDs before allowing any additional withdrawals — as a strategy for controlling how beneficiaries access inherited IRA funds. The listener also asks what else could trigger a large tax bill in that setup, and whether a conduit trust provides creditor protection. (1:15:30) George asks for the follow-up promised at the end of a recent episode — specifically, the better approach for having a trust inherit an IRA when you’re concerned about an heir mismanaging the funds. Hazel Baker traces the story of White Conduit House in Barnsbury, Islington, from its origins as a 1431 Henry VI–licensed water conduit supplying Charterhouse to its later life as an affordable, working-class pleasure garden. She explains how Robert Bartholomew's 1750s improvements and famed hot rolls and butter made it a London destination, noted by Oliver Goldsmith, and how resident organist James Hook began his career there. In the 1780s the adjacent White Conduit Fields hosted the aristocratic White Conduit Club; disruptions from a public right of way helped prompt Thomas Lord to secure a private ground in Marylebone, leading to the MCC and cricket's codified laws. The venue later rebranded with spectacles but declined as urban building and nearby gasworks spoiled the air, and it was demolished in 1849, with fragments remembered in names, gardens, plaques, and a surviving façade.

Jim and Chris discuss listener emails on PSAs regarding IRMAA reimbursements, RMD in-kind transfers, and naming a conduit trust as a retirement account beneficiary. (8:15) A listener shares a PSA that an IRMAA reimbursement was applied as a credit balance drawn down over several months rather than a lump sum. (17:00) The guys discuss a listener PSA on SSA-44 filing: when income is underestimated and IRMAA is owed, Medicare reconciles the difference the following November or December with no penalties or interest assessed. (33:45) George asks whether an RMD can be satisfied through an in-kind transfer of mutual funds to a brokerage account, and whether only a portion needs to be sold to cover the tax bill. (46:00) Jim and Chris take up a listener question about naming a conduit trust as a contingent beneficiary for retirement accounts, kicking off Part 1 of a broader discussion on see-through and conduit trusts — what each structure is, how they differ, and what happens when an IRA names a trust as its beneficiary. They begin exploring the tax implications and planning considerations involved, noting that these arrangements can create both benefits and unintended complications depending on how they’re set up. The conversation will continue on the next week’s Q&A episode, where they’ll complete this listener’s question and address additional questions received on the topic. Mr. Show with Bob and David -- source of the "hey everybody" drum bit Merlin does throughout. "I'm very, very, very specifically stealing it from a bit about the new Ku Klux Klan." Blank Check (Griffin Newman) -- source of "the great ___" bit. "I'll credit Griffin Newman for that bit." People James Thompson (PCalc, Dice by PCalc) -- "What if twenty-sided dice fell on your head?" Merlin on how James finds delight in close-to-the-metal Apple tech. Edgar Wright -- "I will just show up because I'm interested in what he's up to. I don't even care if I like his movie." Ecamm Live -- streaming app Kathy uses for her unicorn co-working sessions. Pre-Show (Superconductors only) LiDAR accessibility features on iPhone -- Merlin fiddled with it on the street, "pointing his phone at people for a very long time." Apple's breathing sleep LED -- the MacBook pulsing light. Kathy: "So relaxing, so unnecessary and delightful." Apple researched sleeping respiratory rates and chose the calmest end of the spectrum. Erich Brenn, plate spinner, on The Ed Sullivan Show -- the origin of "spinning plates" as a metaphor. 8 appearances in the 1950s-60s. Support Conduit with a Relay Membership
The article reports that Eileen Guggenheim, a former aide to then-Prince Charles and now president of the New York Academy of Art, has been accused i of introducing a studen, Maria Farmer, to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. The claim centers on an allegation that Guggenheim played a role in connecting a young woman to Epstein before the woman was allegedly abused, drawing renewed scrutiny because of Guggenheim's past association with British royalty. Critics and commentators have circulated versions of the story online that suggest her involvement in the Epstein scandal. In response to the controversy, Guggenheim has strongly denied the allegation, stating she never introduced any student — or anyone else — to Epstein and had no involvement in such matters. She rejected the claims as unfounded and emphasized that there is no evidence linking her to facilitating introductions to Epstein. The article highlights how the resurfaced accusations have generated attention, partly because of Guggenheim's past role in Prince Charles' circle and persistent public interest in Epstein's network of associates.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
