Kristoffer Leandoer reflekterar över tomheten i T S Eliots "The Waste land". Da! Da! There's a lot of pressure around missions in the Church. From the time they are very young, our children hear the clear expectation that they will serve. But the decision to serve, the realities of mission life, the possibility of returning home early, and the pressure to make big life decisions soon after a mission ends, can all weigh heavily on young Latter-day Saints and their families. “The reality of mission life both pre- and post-mission is hard!” says therapist Apple Lanman, who joins Cynthia and Susan for a discussion of some of the complexities—personal, family, cultural, and institutional—surrounding this celebrated rite of passage.

In this segment, adam and I continue the conversation as we hear from him about his new project space and what he envisions for the future there. He speaks about the significance of this new space being in the Paseo Arts District and why it is such an ideal place for this concept to take form. adam reflects on how one of the most important professional influences in his life taught him how “people are more important than buildings” and how this new space will reflect that emphasis on people and communities. He provides us with a visual representation of how professionals can pool their resources, knowledge, and tools to help the public create projects that serve communities and bring people together. As we wrap up this segment, adam speaks about a financially sustainable model that fuels his concept for a project space and empowers neighborhoods and communities. He makes a very important point about how community projects must “fill the void” left when community programs disappear. adam adds that we have way more than we realize as a community and that we can apply creative, entrepreneurial thinking to “put the pieces together and make it happen”. This is where his creative passion lies: To creatively fill the void, spark innovation, and bring communities and people together through placemaking.
In this episode, I sit down with adam Lanman, artist and architect and hear about what inspired his practice, atelieraL, and his new cooperative project and performance space in the Paseo Arts District. adam shares memories of his early community-based projects that ignited his imagination and that today he focuses his energy on. He talks about some of his completed projects over the past few years and the impact he has seen them make in communities. adam then reflects on these personally and how they have inspired him to focus his practice in finding more creative and effective ways to bring communities together. adam speaks about the benefit of reusing material and provides examples of how that can be done innovatively. He talks about how important it is we change in our cultural mindset and focus on reuse, rethinking, innovation and community building through placemaking. adam tells us how atelieraL will focus on serving groups in community-based projects that have a need for architects, designers and associated professionals who have a heart to serve communities despite their lack of financial resources. Here he emphasizes the importance of “making” in this process and how bringing together stakeholders in his new space will provide a platform to visualize, plan, fund and fabricate new and exciting works. In closing, we hear from adam why public art is so important and how he believes it is beneficial to the community by adding some information about projects both in progress and on the boards.
Very few musicians have mastered the art of reinvention. In a hyper digitally connected world where everyone's vying to get the most followers, subscribers, and likes, James Lanman has sent himself out on a 100-day tour across the United States-- playing backyards and living rooms of perfect strangers. With his "action trumps perfection" motto, The former graphic and web designer turned musician/entrpreneur has mastered a new art of connection... through simple intimate performances with his existing and would-be fans. Plus he even re-engineered his van to house a studio and sleeping quarters while on the road. Recorded live -- even his music performance on the show -- at the SAE Institute (www.sae.edu)
Dr. Ana Maria Otero-Cleves (assistant professor at the University of the Andes in Bogota, Colombia) discusses her use of correspondence from the Lanman and Kemp company and their business deals with Latin America, especially Colombia.

Following his award-winning work on inner-city violence, Code of the Street, sociologist Elijah Anderson introduces the concept of the "cosmopolitan canopy" -- the urban island of civility that exists amidst the ghettos, suburbs, and ethnic enclaves where segregation is the norm. Under the cosmopolitan canopy, diverse peoples come together, and for the most part practice getting along. Anderson's study of this setting provides a new understanding of the complexities of present-day race relations and reveals the unique opportunities here for cross-cultural interaction. With compelling, meticulous descriptions of public spaces in Philadelphia -- 30th Street Station, Reading Terminal Market, Rittenhouse Square -- and quasi-public places like the modern-day workplace, Anderson provides a rich narrative account of how blacks and whites relate and redefine the color line in everyday public life.Elijah Anderson holds the William K. Lanman, Jr. Professorship in Sociology at Yale University, where he teaches and directs the Urban Ethnography Project. Recorded On: Thursday, June 9, 2011

This talk will go in-depth into methods for breaking crypto faster using FPGAs. FPGA's are chips that have millions of gates that can be programmed and connected arbitrarily to perform any sort of task. Their inherent structure provides a perfect environment for running a variety of crypto algorithms and do so at speeds much faster than a conventional PC. A handful of new FPGA crypto projects will be presented and will demonstrate how many algorithms can be broken much faster than people really think, and in most cases, extremely inexpensively. Breaking WPA-PSK is possible with coWPAtty, but trying to do so onsite can be time consuming and boring. All that waiting around for things to be computed each and every time we want to check for dumb and default passwords. Well, we're impatient and like to know the password NOW! Josh Wright has recently added support for pre-computed tables to coWPAtty-but how do you create a good set of tables and not have it take 70 billion years? David Hulton has implemented the time consuming PBKDF2 step of WPA-PSK on FPGA hardware and optimized it to run at blazing speeds specifically for cracking WPA-PSK and generating tables with coWPAtty. What about those lusers that still use WEP? Have you only collected a few hundred interesting packets and don't want to wait till the universe implodes to crack your neighbor’s key? Johnycsh and David Hulton have come up with a method to offload cracking keyspaces to an FPGA and increasing the speed considerably. CheapCrack is a work in progress which follows in the footsteps of The Electronic Frontier Foundation's 1998 DES cracking machine, DeepCrack. In the intervening eight years since DeepCrack was designed, built, deployed, and won the RSA DES challenge, FPGAs have gotten smaller, faster, and cheaper. We wondered how feasible it would be to shrink the cost of building a DES cracking machine from $210,000 1998 dollars to around $10,000 2006 dollars, or less, using COTS FPGA hardware, tools, and HDL cores instead of custom fabricated ASICs. We'll show CheapCrack progress to date, and give estimates on how far from completion we are, as well as a live demo. Lanman hashes have been broken for a long time and everyone knows it's faster to do a Rainbow table lookup than go through the whole keyspace. On many PC's it takes years to go through the entire typeable range, but on a small cluster of FPGAs, you can brute force that range faster than doing a Rainbow table lookup. The code for this will be briefly presented and Chipper v2.0 will be released with many new features. David Hulton and Dan Moniz will also discuss some of the aspects of algorithms that make them suitable for acceleration on FPGAs and the reasons why they run faster in hardware."
