In this episode of "Concerts That Made Us," Brian engages in an in-depth conversation with Eric Weissinger and Victoria Real, the talented musical duo known as Aerolinea. They delve into the intricacies of their new single "Nervous" and their eagerly anticipated album "All We Need," set to release on November 28th. The discussion covers their songwriting process, which is a blend of introspective lyrics and innovative melodies, and explores the emotional themes that permeate their music, such as vulnerability, connection, and resilience. Eric and Victoria open up about the challenges and rewards of collaborating from different locations, highlighting how technology bridges the gap and enhances their creative synergy. They each share their unique musical backgrounds—Eric's history with Atlanta dream-gaze duo I Am a Rocketship and Victoria honing her musical skills under the tutelage of King Crimson guitar legend Robert Fripp, first as a Guitar Craft student and later performing with the League of Crafty Guitarists. They also recount memorable concert experiences that have shaped their artistic journey. These stories underscore the transformative power of live performances and their ability to create lasting connections with audiences. The duo also outlines their future plans, including a series of upcoming shows across South America, where they aim to captivate new audiences with their dynamic performances. They reflect on the significance of concerts in their lives, not just as performers but as fans, emphasizing how live music fosters a sense of community and shared emotion.Throughout the episode, Aerolinea's distinctive sound and heartfelt artistry are highlighted, showcasing their ability to blend diverse influences into a cohesive and compelling musical narrative.Find Aerolinea here: https://aerolinea.band/homeFind CTMU here:https://www.concertsthatmadeus.com/Join Concerts That Made Us Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/concertsthatmadeusSave 10% on Band Builder Academy membership by following this link https://bandbuilderacademy.com/Brian_Concerts/join and using promo code "concerts" at signup Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/concerts-that-made-us. Exposure - The Album* Before we even get started, massive respect is due to Eric Tamm, whose exhaustive work “Robert Fripp - From King Crimson to Guitar Craft” is available online HERE and was a big help in preparing this episode. As we explain in more detail, there are several versions of this album, but this is basically what the listener was presented with in 1979About the lyricist on Exposure, Discogs has this to say:* Joanna WaltonReal Name: Joan Sheree LichtensteinAmerican poet, born 26 December 1942 in New York, New York, New York. Lyricist and one-time girlfriend of Robert Fripp. In 1982, she married George L. Sheanshang. She was killed on 21 December 1988 in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, U.K.In the liner notes of the Roches 1989 album, Speak, Terre Roche wrote “to the memory” of Walton, with whom she had worked on Robert Fripp's 1979 album, Exposure. HERE is another Fripp/Walton collaboration* * It's worth heading over to YouTube for this half-hour video of Fripp being interviewed on something called “Boffomondo” in the middle of his tour promoting ExposureWhat Came Before…The later CD edit has the applause at the end of 21st Century Schizoid Man fading out gently; for the full force of the door being slammed in the audiences face, you have to go back to the vinyl version……but Fripp had already been collaborating with Brian Eno. This is one of Tom's Favourites - …I think we all know about the David Bowie stuff, but did you know about this?…and everybody knows the second Peter Gabriel album, but had you heard this?…or even this? …which brings us to this. Fripp joins Blondie in a live performance of Donna Summer's I Feel Love, which the best disco song ever. This was to be on Exposure but … record labels.…And what came after…The Promotional Tour…which is the bit that really interests us. Armed with a farcically small amount of money from the record company, the “Small Intelligent Mobile Unit” set off with a guitar and two tape recorders to promote his new album by playing music that wasn't on the album in a selection of unusual venues…We both really love Hainbach, so here he is demonstrating how to do Frippertonics in the comfort of your own home.…and here's a breathless reaction videoIt's about time that the League of Gentlemen album was re-issuedSubscribe to Gas GiantsRSS https://api.substack.com/feed/podcast/311033.rss This is a public episode. . Composer and guitarist Patrick Grant believes that the roots of all music are in spectacle. He's worked with avant garde theater directors such as Robert Wilson and the activist Living Theater created by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. He's fascinated by the chants and percussive sounds of the gamelan orchestras of Bali and the Kecak monkey dances which he's studied on frequent visits to Indonesia. He's interested in the physics of sound and what he calls ‘strange' music. Originally from Detroit, he grew up with motoric industrial rhythms and tuned in to the CBC and BBC because Detroit has an affinity to Canada. Today his apartment looks out on the East River in NYC and he's a professor at New York University, but he still travels widely to play and study the traditions of other cultures. My guest today is Enrico Berto an engineer, producer, and musician from Northern Italy. I am very lucky to receive a lot of wonderful emails and messages from our listeners, aka you Rockstars. Here is what I received from Enrico. “Hello Lij, Few weeks ago I discovered your podcast and ever since I've been an avid consumer of it! I love the way you make your guests feel cause they open up in a way I rarely saw on other shows. Beside the great nerdy tips they seem to be willing to share deeper stuff - ex I now know what's Vance Powell monthly break even or that huge mixers still suffer from "impostor syndrome" - and this is very inspiring and precious. I've been in the music industry as a session player, then a mixer/producer for nearly 20 years and as covid hit I was having a major momentum that got slowed down quite a bit. Listening to your podcast is a great source of inspiration and it's giving me the power to keep my head down and carry on with the grind. I thank you so much for it! I have a vast love for music in all its genres. If I really had to pinpoint some they would be Classic Rock, Alternative Rock and HipHop. I make music because of a deep, almost spiritual, connection to it. Making music is my passion and my call. I decided to turn it into my profession so my whole life could revolve around it. I went to the University to study foreign languages and literature but later attended the Musician Institute in Los Angeles and a couple of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft seminars. And then decided to give the music a serious go so I started hustling. I played in bands, composed jingles for TV, taught guitar, recorded and mixed bands on a crappy laptop out of mouldy rehearsal spaces …you name it! I was eager to get more so I pushed further by moving to London and studying sound engineering at the SAE Institute. I then began session playing, touring, producing and engineering full time, all of it bouncing between UK and Italy. In 2008 I founded Mushroom Studio: a little production heaven hidden on the mountains of northern Italy where other artists and I could cozy up and create.” I'm always grateful to receive emails like this, and listening to Enrico‘s work I discovered that it was fantastic! And so nothing brings me greater joy than to help showcase members of our own community at Recording Studio Rockstars. Archtop guitar maker Bill Comins started his career as an aspiring jazz musician. Thanks to that, he brings the player's viewpoint into his guitars. "If I go overboard on making things very resonant, I'm going to be fighting inconsistencies, and as player that is useless to me on the bandstand," he says. For our 34th episode, I sit down with Bill at the Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival, where he shares his player-led insights into archtop guitar design, voicing and amplification. Bill also tells us about his Guitar Craft series line and explains how he has successfully navigated the world of archtops for over 25 years. In addition, I have a brief conversation with Peter Henriksen of Henriksen amplifiers, who is the the creator of the Rocky Moutain Archtop Festival. Peter tells us what it is like to put on a first year show, how the idea for it came about and his plans for the future.
