How silly was it to make James Franciscus look exactly like Charlton Heston, instead of just having him play Taylor? How much of a total jerk is Dr. Zaius? Are these under-dwellers wearing those masks for outsiders only or what? How great are Zira and Cornelius as characters? And how fantastic is it to watch a big, Hollywood, sci-fi sequel and the movie's totally unconcerned with setting up the next one? PLUS: Never agree to follow Taylor in traffic, because he's gonna blow down the road and leave you in the dust! Beneath the Planet of the Apes stars James Franciscus, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, James Gregory, David Watson, Don Pedro Colley, Natalie Trundy, Thomas Gomez, Jeff Corey, Victor Bruno, Paul Richards, and Charlton Heston as Colonel George Taylor; directed by Ted Post. Happy Birthday, Luke Appling! Born in High Point, North Carolina on April 2, 1907, Lucius Benjamin Appling moved to Atlanta, Georgia with his family as a child. After graduating from Fulton High School, where he played baseball and football, Appling attended Oglethorpe College in Georgia for two years. Appling starred on the university's baseball team, while also playing fullback on the football team, before leaving school during his sophomore year to pursue a career in professional baseball. He signed a contract with the Southern League Atlanta Crackers in 1929 and spent one year with the team, experiencing success at the plate but also committing 42 errors in only 104 games at shortstop. Despite his early difficulties in the field, Appling remained determined to make a successful career out of playing shortstop. He later recalled, "My Daddy was lefthanded, and I was lefthanded when I was little. In fact, I was lefthanded all the way to high school. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Hanseatic League or Hansa which dominated North European trade in the medieval period. With a trading network that stretched from Iceland to Novgorod via London and Bruges, these German-speaking Hansa merchants benefitted from tax exemptions and monopolies. Over time, the Hansa became immensely influential as rulers felt the need to treat it well. Kings and princes sometimes relied on loans from the Hansa to finance their wars and an embargo by the Hansa could lead to famine. Eventually, though, the Hansa went into decline with the rise in the nation state's power, greater competition from other merchants and the development of trade across the Atlantic. Paul Richards is a decision making expert with a particular focus on investment manager and trustee decision-making.  He is the founder of Better Decisions, and was previously Head of Governance and Decision Research at the consulting firm Redington.  He is also the host of the Decision Nerds podcast. Our conversation is an ambitious one, seeking to dive into the science of better decision making, what makes an effective Board process, the nature of corporate culture and its evolution and how it contributes to better outcomes. We start with Paul's early instinct to understand things, and how things work, and how he first became interested in the emergent area of behavioral science at the beginning of his career. Moving then to the science of decision making, Paul notes how we often try to import structures and frameworks from one context to another, which entirely ignores the subtle nature of context, the unique corporate backdrop, place in time, and the unique (and dynamic) personalities involved around the table.  We talk about nurturing conflict - the healthy kind, and how vulnerability and admitting lack of knowledge can be both disarming and empowering (c.f. the nine words that are the hardest to say but that every trustee should know). We move then to the massive area of corporate culture and what some of the Decision Nerds podcasts have revealed in that respect and the link to better investment and corporate performance. There is more information about Better Decisions here: https://www.better-decisions.co/ and about the Decision Nerds podcast here. https://decisionnerds.buzzsprout.com/Series 1 of 2024 is supported by Apollo Global Management, a leading provider of alternative asset management and retirement services solutions. 2024 will be a year of tremendous change, and tremendous noise.  With elections in key regions, we are likely to be subjected to a volley of rhetoric and uncertainty will be the order of the day. In times like this, it seems even more important to reach out to our wise community for their insights on what should stay the same, and evolve, amid this uncertainty. Tune in to hear about the power of networks, the importance of investing in relationships for the long term, the need for certainty and the importance of hearing the bad news early - particularly as a credit investor.  We also talk about the blue economy, the power of capital, company culture and blockages to effective governance, as well as the transformational role of alternatives in individual portfolio.  Tune in to hear from Catherine Beard, about her path through private credit and Jason Singer about what it means to provide solutions to clients on a global scale, and how alternatives will grow as portfolio components.  Uwe Schillhorn charts his career, which involved stints in Latin America and other Emerging Markets, and describes how the desire for certainty drives advisory behaviors even amid great market volatility while Paul Richards takes us deep inside the governance mindset and teaches us some words that every board member and executive should learn.Elizabeth Browne charts her extraordinary career and family history of female empowerment and shares the kind of founder she is now committed to supporting, while Asha Mehta takes us on a journey of her own, describing the Power of Capital, the book she wrote with the same title, and how being an Adventure Capitalist has become her life's mission.Chris Gorell Barnes describes the depths and opportunities in investing in the Blue Economy, and Shane Lanigan describes why credit investors need the bad news upfront, while discussing the opportunity set in Ireland and the UK. Julie Castro Abrams talks us through creating a seat at the table for all women, while Angela Miller May returns to the podcast to update us on her new CIO role at IMRF in Illinois, and how she is determined to leave no stone unturned in making an impact.  Series 1 of 2024 is supported by Apollo Global Management, a leading provider of alternative asset management and retirement services solutions. Apollo seeks to provide clients excess return at every point along the risk-reward spectrum and is focused on empowering retirees, building and financing stronger businesses and driving a more sustainable future.

This ICMA podcast with four Leading Law Firms is about the transition from legacy US dollar LIBOR to SOFR in the bond market. The background is that panel bank US dollar LIBOR ceased publication on 30 June, as planned. The FCA as global regulator of LIBOR has provided for synthetic US dollar LIBOR to be published for legacy transactions, including bonds, until 30 September 2024. Synthetic US dollar LIBOR provides a temporary bridge for legacy bonds to be transitioned from LIBOR to SOFR, the US dollar risk-free rate. Following an introduction from Paul Richards, Head of Market Practice & Regulatory Policy at ICMA, the podcast consists of the following contributions from experts in four leading law firms: Catherine Wade of Linklaters on fallbacks in floating rate notes under English law Julia Machin of Clifford Chance on consent solicitations under English law Marcus Mackenzie of Freshfields on securitisations, including negative consents, under English law Amanda Thomas and Patrizia Pasqualini of Allen & Overy on the relationship between transition under English law, the US LIBOR Act and other foreign laws And Neil Pallender of Linklaters on operational issues during the transition

Today's guests are a pair of broking executives clearly relishing an opportunity to lead a business through a period of accelerated growth in a market that is extremely favourable. James Baird (pictured left) and Paul Richards (right) are co-CEOs and Managing Partners of Consilium, the wholesale and specialist insurance and reinsurance broker that is part of the expansive Aventum group. Aventum Group CEO David Bearman laid down a marker back in Episode 82 almost two years ago and it's worth re-listening to that podcast to put this one into context: https://www.thevoiceofinsurance.com/podcast/episode/33b1d9c1/ep-82-david-bearman-ceo-aventum-dont-walk-into-a-crowded-room This encounter is a tour de force. Whilst both James and Paul have worked together for most of their long careers they are relatively new arrivals to the Aventum fold. But you wouldn't know from listening in here – the two are brimming with enthusiasm for their new home. Consilium already places $500mn of Gross Written Premium and has incredibly ambitious growth targets, but what is refreshing is that we aren't talking about a familiar tale of private Equity backing, debt leverage, M&A and exit multiples. Here we are only using those terms to define what Consilium isn't. And that's what's so fascinating. Consilium is a young broker with an average age way below that of these two interviewees and this interviewer. It has a progressive mindset on the application of tech in broking, much of which it develops in-house, yet in other ways it is incredibly traditional, balking at debt leverage, external equity investment and M&A for volume. The calculation here is that by growing organically whatever it loses in leverage the broker wins culturally, because it only hires people it feels will fit in and buy into the intermediary's more stable culture. It also banks on that solid environment being a plus for customers who benefit from continuity of service. It's definitely different. And with 30% organic growth on the cards, it certainly seems to be doing something right! Listen on for a really interesting and refreshing encounter. James speaks first. NOTES: Some Abbreviations. GL is General Liability and the ULR and ILR are respectively the Ultimate and Incurred Loss Ratios. LINKS We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com/
