"The Very Day" If you're wondering if the Connecticut-born Grammyt Award winning keyboardist and composer grew up with music in the house, the answer is yes--his father Joe Porcaro was a renowned jazz drummer who played with everyone from Sinatra to Stan Getz to Madonna. He also played on hundreds of film and television scores including The Wild Bunch, I Dream Of Jeannie and Edward Scissorhands. He also founded the Percussion Institute of Technology and later the drum department at the Los Angeles Music Academy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_College_of_Music). So, yeah music was the lifesblood of the Porcaro household and at very young ages, Steve and his brothers Mike and Jeff went into the family business. How early of an age you might be wondering? Well, at 17 when most of us were finishing our last year of high school and thinking about who and who wouldn't go with us to the prom, Steve was playing with Gary Wright's band on his 1976 Dream Weaver tour. A year later while most of us were fumbling our way through our first year of college, Steve and his brothers were in Boz Scaggs's band. In 1978 Steve and his brother Jeff along with a few other session playing pals formed their own band called Toto. How'd that work out? Well, 50 million albums later, I'd say it worked out very well, thank you. From "Hold The Line" to "Rosanna" to "Africa" Toto had a procession of hits, became one of the biggest bands on the planet and went on to compose the music for David Lynch's Dune. Steve left the fold in 1987 and went on to compose and score for countless film and television projects, including From Dusk Til Dawn 2, Eddie Murphy's Metro and he did all the original music for Justified. This is just a partial list, by the way--he also wrote the song "Human Nature" which Michael Jackson recorded on his Thriller album, the beginning of several compositions he wrote for Jackson to record. Considered one of the pioneers of analog synths, Porcaro's inventive loops appeared on works by everyone from Elton John to Don Henley. When it comes to artists he's collaborated with, here's a list that's going to knock you out: Hall and Oates, Earth Wind and Fire, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, Warren Zevon, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, and Michael McDonald. Also a partial list. And speaking of Yes, Porcaro was good friends with Yes's Chris Squire and played in his band The Chris Squire Experiment. Porcaro's second solo album The Very Day is one of 2025's real bright spots. Featuring guest appearances by Stan Lynch, Jude Cole, Michael McDonald, Gardner Cole and his Toto pal David Paich, The Very Day is a stirring song cycle of effortless pop melodies, rootsy grooves and insanely catchy hooks. It's pure magic. And this conversation felt the same. Playlist of the Show[06:24] 爱河 - ZaZaZsu咂咂苏[09:08] @ - 王OK[11:01] Feeling Good - Michael Buble[13:48] Gone Fishin' - Mighty Mo Rodgers[14:19] The Thrill is Gone - B.B. What does it take to release 200 digital singles in a single day and earn a Guinness World Record in the process? More importantly, what can that teach us about building a truly sustainable music career? In this episode, I sit down with The Orchestrator, a self-taught saxophonist whose approach to the music business is as methodical as it is inspiring. His philosophy centers on complete independence: owning your masters, understanding every revenue stream, and building passive income that allows you to create art without compromise. The Orchestrator shares his journey from learning Antonio Carlos Jobim classics to developing a bossa nova and jazz-focused catalog that generates sustainable income. But this isn't just about music. The Orchestrator highlights the importance of financial literacy, strategic thinking, and maintaining artistic integrity in an industry that often demands the opposite.Support ProducerHeadIf you value ProducerHead and want to support the show, consider a premium subscription (just $6 per month, even less on an annual basis). Complete Ownership Creates FreedomOwning your masters, publishing, and trademarks isn't just about money—it's about maintaining the power to pivot and make decisions without outside interference. True artistic and financial independence starts with ownership.2. Diversify Your Revenue StreamsStreaming royalties from distributors represent only a fraction of what your music can earn. Financial Stability Enables Better ArtWhen your bills are covered by passive income, you can focus on creating art for art's sake rather than compromising your vision for short-term financial gains.Support ProducerHeadIf you value ProducerHead and want to support the show, consider a premium subscription (just $6 per month, even less on an annual basis). His story proves that with the right knowledge, strategic thinking, and commitment to ownership, you can build a career that serves both your creative vision and your financial goals. The question isn't whether you can afford to own your masters—it's whether you can afford not to.What resonated most with you from this conversation? The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

Escuchar audio

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an aptly named album by the great tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz has had a long career marked by the ups and downs of changing styles and musical tastes but he always managed to prevail and remain at the top of the list of great saxophone players. This album finds Getz in inspired form bolstered by a stellar rhythm section. Getz performs here with the late Albert Dailey on piano, virtuoso bassist Clint Houston and the still living Billy Hart on drums. It was recorded in New York for Columbia Records on October 1, 1975. Four long tunes make up this fine date and it's title "The Master" is well deserved. Stan the Man is tonight's Jazz Feature.....enjoy!

Roosevelt Brownlee lives on the curve of a quiet street in Savannah, GA, the tall stalks of okra in his vegetable garden just visible from the side drive. It's one of many such streets in the port city, and only a few minutes from the old City Market area where he spent his earliest years. But in between those two Savannah addresses, Roosevelt has traveled the world, from France to Africa, the Caribbean to Denmark, cooking for everyone from Muddy Waters and Stan Getz to Nina Simone and the Rothchild family. His fried chicken was famous in Europe, his family's red rice recipe honed and tweaked in chateau kitchens. With every deviled crab and pan of mac and cheese, he brought comfort and sustenance to jazz musicians hungry for a taste of home, and at the same time, introduced countless newcomers to the joys of good Southern cooking. Although he's cooked for much of the last two decades in Savannah kitchens, he's mostly retired now, though every so often you can see him at special events in the Lowcountry, big hotel spoon in hand, stirring a pan or a pot of something. If that happens, make sure that you get a taste of what he's cooking. Remember, it's the true stuff of legend. José Antonio Bowen: Teaching With AI José Antonio Bowen has won teaching awards at Stanford and Georgetown and is past president of Goucher College. He has written over 100 scholarly articles and has appeared as a musician with Stan Getz, Bobby McFerrin, and others. He is the author of multiple books in higher education and is a senior fellow for the American Association of Colleges and Universities. He is the author with C. Edward Watson of Teaching With AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning*. AI will change how we work, but it's also going to change how we think. In this conversation, José and I explore where to begin working with AI and why those who can use it will serve a critical role in shaping what's next. Key Points Physical maps make you smarter than GPS, but GPS is more practical for daily use. AI isn't inherently good or bad, but like the internet, it will change how we work. AI will eliminate some jobs, but it will change every job. Those who can work with AI will replace those who can't. Rather than thinking about creativity through the lens of responses from AI, focus on bringing creativity into your prompts. Most of the AI progress for companies is coming from non-tech folks that are figuring our how specific tasks get more efficient. AI is very good at some things and not good at others. You'll discover how this relates to your work by experimenting with different prompts.
