The jazz standard "All The Things You Are" has been performed countless times by master jazz vocalists, 30s big bands, bebop small groups, hard-bop combos, modern deconstructionists, and even soon-to-be Kings of Pop. The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

The Girl From Ipanema - Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto
Escuchar audio

The Girl From Ipanema 2. Doralice 3. P'Ra Machucar Meu Coracao 4. Desafinado 5. Corcovado 6. So Danco Samba 7. O Grande Amor 8. Tonight's Jazz Feature is an aptly named album by the great tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz has had a long career marked by the ups and downs of changing styles and musical tastes but he always managed to prevail and remain at the top of the list of great saxophone players. This album finds Getz in inspired form bolstered by a stellar rhythm section. Getz performs here with the late Albert Dailey on piano, virtuoso bassist Clint Houston and the still living Billy Hart on drums. It was recorded in New York for Columbia Records on October 1, 1975. Four long tunes make up this fine date and it's title "The Master" is well deserved. Stan the Man is tonight's Jazz Feature.....enjoy!

After the Guys define what a "Make Out" Song is and means to them, they roll into the list of songs with some of the hits and their "Back Stories".From the 1963 hit "Hey Paula" by Paul and Paula (20:17); to the 1963 Lenny Welch classic "Since I fell for you" (21:23); to the 1964 hit "The Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto (22:40) the guys give their thoughts. Then they go through the R&B group The "Miracles" led by Smokey Robinson and the injustice of that group waiting many years to get inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF (25:20); before discussing The Temptations hit, "I wish it would rain" (31:50) and the meaning of those haunting lyrics. They close the show with 1968's "You're all I need to get by" (33:06) sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, 1968's "Build me up Buttercup" (35:39) by the Foundations, 1950's classic "Having a Party" (39:28) by the great Sam Cooke and a discussion on the Power of Music helping people with dementia by bringing them songs from their past and the joy it brings for these people.Enjoy the show! You can email us at reeldealzmoviesandmusic@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page, Reel Dealz Podcast: Movies & Music Thru The Decades to leave comments and/or TEXT us at 843-855-1704 as well.

Summary Brian Bromberg, a virtuoso bassist, honors the legacy of Scott LaFaro with his latest album, LaFaro, and a series of live performances. LaFaro, who tragically died at 25, was a groundbreaking bassist with the Bill Evans Trio, inspiring Bromberg's tribute. Initially reluctant to take on the project due to the pressures of honoring a jazz legend, Bromberg eventually embraced it after realizing LaFaro's profound influence on his playing. Bromberg also shares personal connections to jazz greats like Stan Getz, with whom he played, and Bill Evans, a missed opportunity from his youth. His career spans collaborations with top artists and an eclectic solo catalog ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary styles. Known for his versatility on upright and electric bass, Bromberg defies genre boundaries, seeking to deliver heartfelt, high-quality musicianship in every project. His performances and music continue to celebrate innovation and jazz's rich history. https://njjs.org/magazine/

Roosevelt Brownlee lives on the curve of a quiet street in Savannah, GA, the tall stalks of okra in his vegetable garden just visible from the side drive. It's one of many such streets in the port city, and only a few minutes from the old City Market area where he spent his earliest years. But in between those two Savannah addresses, Roosevelt has traveled the world, from France to Africa, the Caribbean to Denmark, cooking for everyone from Muddy Waters and Stan Getz to Nina Simone and the Rothchild family. His fried chicken was famous in Europe, his family's red rice recipe honed and tweaked in chateau kitchens. With every deviled crab and pan of mac and cheese, he brought comfort and sustenance to jazz musicians hungry for a taste of home, and at the same time, introduced countless newcomers to the joys of good Southern cooking. Although he's cooked for much of the last two decades in Savannah kitchens, he's mostly retired now, though every so often you can see him at special events in the Lowcountry, big hotel spoon in hand, stirring a pan or a pot of something. If that happens, make sure that you get a taste of what he's cooking. Remember, it's the true stuff of legend. José Antonio Bowen: Teaching With AI José Antonio Bowen has won teaching awards at Stanford and Georgetown and is past president of Goucher College. He has written over 100 scholarly articles and has appeared as a musician with Stan Getz, Bobby McFerrin, and others. He is the author of multiple books in higher education and is a senior fellow for the American Association of Colleges and Universities. He is the author with C. Edward Watson of Teaching With AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning*. AI will change how we work, but it's also going to change how we think. In this conversation, José and I explore where to begin working with AI and why those who can use it will serve a critical role in shaping what's next. Key Points Physical maps make you smarter than GPS, but GPS is more practical for daily use. AI isn't inherently good or bad, but like the internet, it will change how we work. AI will eliminate some jobs, but it will change every job. Those who can work with AI will replace those who can't. Rather than thinking about creativity through the lens of responses from AI, focus on bringing creativity into your prompts. Most of the AI progress for companies is coming from non-tech folks that are figuring our how specific tasks get more efficient. AI is very good at some things and not good at others. You'll discover how this relates to your work by experimenting with different prompts. In this episode we welcome the esteemed David Toop to Hammersmith – on the UK's General Election day – to discuss his extraordinary new book about (and around) Dr. John's 1968 album Gris-Gris. First we revisit the short-lived but splendidly eclectic Collusion magazine our guest co-founded in 1981: we hear about its inception and mission, as manifest in groundbreaking pieces about rap, surf, salsa, exotica and "paranoid sex in '60s soul". We touch on key points along the journey of David's journalistic career before arriving at The Wire in the '90s. A 2012 Pitchfork piece about Wire icon Scott Walker leads us to David's audio interview for that article: two clips from the conversation prompt discussion of Walker's remarkable career from the Walker Brothers to his new album Bish Bosch. Finally we reach the debut album by Malcolm Rebennack, a.k.a. "Dr. John the Night Tripper", and learn of the long gestation of David's book during lockdown. David discusses the complex themes and issues explored in Two-Headed Doctor, including voodoo, racism, minstrelsy, New Orleans, unreliable mythography, and the unsung brilliance of the album's co-creator Harold Battiste. A gravelly clip from the late Charlie Gillett's 1971 audio interview with the Night Tripper himself provides a capsule backstory to the album's germination. Mark talks us out with quotes from newly-added library pieces about Stan Getz (1973), Fred Wesley (1974), Primal Scream (1997) and Robbie Williams (1999). Many thanks to special guest David Toop. Listening for Ghosts in Dr John's Gris-Gris will be published on August 20th by Strange Attractor. Pieces discussed: ¿Te Gusta La Musica Latina?, Alone in the Dark: Björk on Vespertine, Incredibly Strange and Highly Exotic, Scott Walker audio, Mystic vapour: 'Jump Sturdy' (book excerpt), Dr. John: Shadowy Singer Rises From Bayou, Dr. John In Babylon, Dr. John audio, Harold Battiste, Stan Getz, Fred Wesley, Primal Scream and Robbie Williams.

This conversation was recorded during the most recent sailing of The Jazz Cruise and it featured an interview of NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron by our artistic director Shelly Berg. Kenny talked with Shelly about his early formative years growing up in Philadelphia, as well as about lessons learned from playing with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Yusef Lateef, Charle Haden and Stan Getz. Kenny and Shelly also geek out about both the piano and teaching piano.
In this episode, Brent discusses about a question from listener Michael George, a clarinet player facing challenges with jazz standards often perceived as more suited to tenor saxophone. Michael seeks advice on emulating the styles of Paul Desmond and Stan Getz to improve his clarinet performance. Brent addresses this by debunking the notion that jazz standards are tailored to specific instruments, emphasizing that any jazz standard can be adapted and played on any instrument. He encourages musicians to explore solos and melodies across different instruments, as this approach broadens their understanding of jazz language and enhances their overall musicianship. He elaborates on the benefits of learning solos from instruments different from one's own, sharing his personal experience as a guitarist who often transcribed solos from piano, saxophone, and trumpet players. Tune in to gain valuable insights on maximizing your practice and expanding your jazz repertoire, regardless of your instrument.Important Links:Free Guide to learning standards by ear: Learn Jazz Standards the Smart WayLJS Inner Circle MembershipListen to the Learn Jazz Standards PodcastLearn Jazz Standards Inner Circle: Get 50% off your first month!
