Justin Mandon has been a guest on the podcast in the past, and we wanted to bring him back to discuss the reconstruction of the Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California. This may be one of the best reconstructions we've seen in years, but it was not without its challenges. The work was broken into two parts: the front nine was completed first, and a year later, they worked on the back nine.Justin talks about selecting and testing the greens mix both at the mine and on-site when the mix arrived, along with the challenges he faced there. The front nine did suffer some salt damage that was very difficult to identify. It wasn't the total amount of salt in the water, but rather that the salt was the predominant element, overpowering all others and causing the young seedlings to wilt.He also discusses the EarthWorks amendment package he incorporated into the greens mix, which allowed him to grow the entire project using under three pounds of nitrogen. Restoring the architecture of a classically designed course is different from simply building a modern golf course; it's time-consuming and requires meticulous attention to detail to preserve the original MacKenzie layout. Dave Wilber may very well be one of the best agronomy minds in the turf industry. A close friend of EarthWorks for over 30 years, he has appeared on numerous EarthWorks Podcasts and is one of our most popular guests. Dave spent many years as a golf course superintendent, much of his career as a turf consultant, and he has also been a site manager for construction projects. One of his greatest strengths is his in-depth knowledge of irrigation water concerns, and he has helped many superintendents navigate these issues with tremendous success. Recently he has taken a position as Director of Agronomy & Customer Success at TurfRad, a company that is revolutionizing the water sensor business in the turf industry. We discussed how TurfRad sensors can be mounted on mowers or utility vehicles and provide thousands of data points showing moisture levels across courses and sports fields. At the end of each year the EarthWorks agronomy team gets together for the last podcast of the year. Kevin Hicks, Kirk Castner, Jack Higgins, Joel Simmons and newcomer Marshall Evans go around the table talking about the events of the year, the weather, and some ideas that we have formulated throughout the turf season. It was hot and dry in most corners of the country, even more so in the east and south than the west but it was a tough year all around. Of course, we talked about the many successes that we saw and bounced around some ideas that can make any turf manager's life easier. As research and experience have shown us, a dry hot summer can lead to fairy ring problems the following year. Carbon and soil biology is always on our minds, and we discussed it often in this five way conversation. Visiting ancient mounds & earthworks in the United States is a great way to introduce you and your family to some of the most unappreciated archaeological treasures in the world. The largest and most complex geometric earthworks in the world, made about 2,000 years ago, are in America. There are thousands of ancient mound sites, some with associated museums, that show the history of an extensive civilization that was found all over America in 1492. There were tens of thousands of hamlets, villages, towns, and even cities here with populations up to 50,000 people residing in the area surrounding mound complexes. These towns and cities were often fortresses with high palisade walls protecting the elite, who resided on the massive mounds.This ancient mound culture likely had its start around 9,000 B.C., but by 3,000 B.C. or so mound building took off and dominated the continent. It is known that over 100,000 mound sites, some having over 100 mounds, were constructed by this culture, which all but vanished after incursions by the Spanish in the early 1500s spread diseases that decimated the population. Within two generations, the indigenous populations declined by 90 to 95 percent and by 1600 mound building all but ceased. However, this culture made some of the most exquisite and mysterious ceremonial artifacts ever found in the world, some of which are displayed at site museums. America's Mound Builders represent a forgotten part of history, one that merits as much appreciation as any other ancient civilization.In this first volume of the Native American Mound & Earthwork Field Journal, a brief history of this amazing culture is presented. The various types of mounds and earthworks they made, the dates of various mound cultures, and many of their key spiritual beliefs are presented in this easy-to-understand book. The role of shaman and Medicine People within their society is explained in a straight forward manner as well as a simple method to mentally connect with sites when you visit, should you desire to do so. Over 30 photos and illustrations are also found in the book.The importance of keeping notes as you visit sites is stressed and the types of things you might want to record at each location are presented. Kevin Mercer has been in the turf management industry for over two decades and has worked on golf courses, sport fields, schools and universities. Unbeknownst to her, George Mitchell was experimenting with fracking techniques in the area. This experience led Sharon and her son to relocate to Denton, Texas, seeking a cleaner environment. However, this move ultimately fueled her passion for environmental advocacy. My guest today is here to demystify one of the aspects of permaculture design that I hear the most questions about, but also one of the issues that I see folks most entrenched in their viewpoints about. I'm talking about earthworks; one of the first aspects that people implement and the most permanent change made in a landscape. Today I've got Douglas Barnes, author of “permaculture earthworks” and owner director of EcoEdge Design Ltd. to answer our questions and take the guess work out of the subject of terrain changes. In this interview Douglas talks about the best way to map out contours on the land, some of the most effective ways to harvest rainwater on a site, how to link up various earthwork and containment systems to make them work in tandem, and most importantly, he talks in detail about many of the safety concerns that many people have no idea about when it comes to installing swales and dams.

Rick Krok is the Director of Project Coordination & Estimation at LaBar Golf Irrigation. As such, it is always an honor when Indigenous leaders share their experiences and wisdom with the broader public. This week, Casey Camp-Horinek of the Ponca Nation joins Nate to recount her decades of work in Indigenous and environmental activism. Her stories shed light on the often-overlooked struggles and tragedies faced by Indigenous communities in their efforts to restore and safeguard their homelands. Casey also shares her current work advocating for The Rights of Nature - which legalizes the same rights of personhood to Earth's ecosystems - of which the Ponca Nation was the first tribe in the US to implement.  How is the treatment of Indigenous people under the United States government reflective of the exploitative relationship between industrial systems and the Earth? What is ‘Post-Traumatic Growth' and how could it assist in healing the deeper cultural wounds obstructing genuine dialogue and change? Could aligning our current laws with the laws of nature - followed by every other species - result in a more sustainable, interconnected, and thriving humanity?    About Casey Camp-Horinek: Casey Camp-Horinek, Councilwoman and Hereditary Drumkeeper of the Women's Scalp Dance Society of the Ponca Nation of Oklahoma, is a longtime activist, environmentalist, actress, and published author. First taking up the cause of Native and Human Rights in the early '70s, it has been in the last 15 years that she began her plea for Environmental Justice for her Ponca people and people around the globe. Casey has identified and diligently worked to remediate the corridor of toxic industry surrounding the historic lands of the Ponca people. Because of Casey's work, the Ponca Nation is the first Tribe in the State of Oklahoma to adopt the Rights of Nature Statute, and to pass a moratorium on fracking on Tribal Lands. Casey was also instrumental in the drafting and adoption of the first ever International Indigenous Women's Treaty protecting the Rights of Nature. When building a new golf course or spots field you have one shot at getting it right and that is when you have open soil and can amend that soil to the fullest. Since 1988, EarthWorks has been building amendment packages for new construction projects and have worked with thousands of golf course superintendents and sports turf managers. Steve Dickinson was an innovator in the turf distribution business throughout his entire career. He was the founder of a very successful distribution company, Supreme Turf, in St. Louis Missouri that focused on the agronomic success of their clients. Steve earned the title of "Soils Doctor" from many of his client friends and helped many superintendents understand the value of balancing soil chemistry. Steve had the opportunity to work with a local County Extension Agent who had studied under the University of Missouri‘s Dr. William Albrecht. Dr. Albrecht  is considered the father of cation balancing in a soil. Steve talks about visiting golf course superintendents in the 1970's and 80's. Even then he talked about CEC and cation balancing, instead of just pH, and started building quite the following. Superintendents started to understand that fertilizers worked better on better soils and Steve helped them understand the importance of applying carbon to the soil. In the late 1970's the only “organic” fertilizers readily available were bio-solids, but through the years he was able to see the growth of carbon based fertility. He became an early adopter of the philosophies of EarthWorks and continued to manage soils from a cation perspective. Thrilled to bring back our friend and chemist, Lawrence Mayhew. As always, we run through a gamut of topics including humic substances, biological activity in the soil, the humification process and the life of soil microbes.  Lawrence is always informative and entertaining and has become one of our most anticipated guests. In this conversation we talked about a new procedure for testing soil nitrogen known as the ACE (Autoclaved Citrate Extractable) Nitrogen process. Lawrence shared some information about a recently published paper from researchers at Michigan State University. Although this paper was only published in the fall of 2023 and has no known commercial testing facilities using the method, Lawrence is very excited about its potential. We ended the conversation talking about how the state of California tests products for humic acids, a flawed method, that does not take into account that when humates are added to a formula that contains cations, like calcium, the humic acids combine with the cations and is no longer extractable as a free molecule. But the good news is, this is exactly what we want to see because it tells us they are doing their job. Andy Mallick's trajectory as a Rising Star of Turf has been a long one, entailing stops at four golf courses over 14 years before landing his first head superintendent position. Now in his fifth season as superintendent (and 11th overall) at Metedeconk National Golf Club (Jackson, NJ), Mallick had interim stops at Pine Valley Golf Club, Country Club of Darien and Southward Ho Golf Club on Long Island, picking up valuable experience at each one. Mallick credits his girlfriend, Rachel, with grounding his peripatetic instincts and helping him settle down and find a home at Metedeconk. He looks forward to hosting another Korn Ferry Tour event this year and welcoming another Springer Spaniel puppy to their family this week.

Bryony speaks to two fascinating guests, both specialising in methane emissions, their causes and impacts: Dr. Sebastien Biraud and Sharon Wilson.Dr. Biraud is a biogeochemist, leading the Climate Sciences Department. Sebastien's work has taken him to the tropical rainforests of the Amazon, the great plains of the United States, and the Arctic tundra. He is currently co-leading/leading projects for the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission. These projects involve integrating and applying high-precision greenhouse gas observations to advance research on the atmospheric carbon cycle and to enhance measurement, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas emissions. Sharon  is a 5th generation Texan who, after 12 years working for the oil and gas industry in Ft. Worth, left and bought 42 acres in Wise County. Unknown to her at the time was that George Mitchell was experimenting in Wise County to figure out how to produce oil and gas from shale. She had a ringside seat at the sneak preview called Fracking Impacts. This experience prompted her to join Earthworks', working on their Oil & Gas Accountability Project in 2010.
