Another week of last minute schedule changes, flight delays, lost iPads, misplaced laptops, and other mishaps delayed the recording of this week's episode, but finally on Saturday night we were able to sit down for an especially fast-paced episode to close out the week that comes with competing Star Trek metaphors, reflectioning and debating briefly about which was the weirdest news story of the week—the latest Epstein file revelations, MTG departing the House, the Mamdani-Trump Oval Office Summit—the greatest clash since Yalta, or the most bizarre meeting of Capitalist and Communist since Franklin Roosevelt dined alone—before we finally settle down to out main topic of the week: the launch of what will be a regular feature here on the 3WHH between now and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence next July 4.For this first installment, we ponder the strange case of historian Gordon Wood, considered the pre-eminent historian of the American Founding, who was in the news last week for a speech he delivered in Washington DC for the American Enterprise Institute. Steve was present to hear the speech; John took in the published version, and Lucretia let out a mighty harumph. Wood's main thesis at the beginning of his illustrious career was that the American Founding should be understood as part of the "civic republican" tradition, rather than a Lockean-Jeffersonian natural rights revolution. It made him the left's favorite historian for a time, a point Steve made in a critical article about Wood 20 years ago, "The Liberal Republicanism of Gordon Wood." Naturally—do I really need to say "naturally"? you know what's coming next—John stepped up to defend Wood's civic republican thesis. Lucretia thought she could sit this one out, but ChatGPT provided us with a debate between Lucretia and Wood, with "Wood" getting off some good zingers like "Lucretia, the Founding wasn't a live-action performance of Natural Right: The Musical,"  and "Of course they were serious—serious about the collapse of deference, the emergence of democratic culture, and all the other things that give Straussians spontaneous nosebleeds." Lucretia responded in kind: "You make it sound like Samuel Adams was out there organizing consciousness-raising workshops. “Hi, I'm Sam, and I'm here to talk about my feelings on monarchy…”The episode is slightly shorter than normal as Steve had to rush off to the final performance of Steve Hackett's North American tour in Portland, Oregon, and the final performance of keyboardist Roger King, and because the philistine and cretinous Lucretia and John attempted to mock the gods of prog rock, the exit music this week is an excerpt from Hackett's most famous guitar lick. Comme promis il y a quelques semaines après avoir constaté qu'un monument du rock progressif américain n'était pas assez souvent programmé ici, on se régale d'un extrait du tout nouvel album de STYX, "Circling From Above" sorti cet été. Bien qu'il s'agisse du 18ème album de ce groupe de Chicago, vétéran du genre outre-atlantique malgré quelques scissions dans les années 80 et 90, force est de constater que l'inspiration et la qualité de production reste d'un haut niveau !  Toujours sur le sol américain, plus contemporain et empruntant une voix plus psychédélique avec des influences jazz latino : THE POINT.  Originaire du Texas (Austin), fallait tomber dessus, ce qui m'est arrivé (sans me faire de mal au contraire !!) grâce à notre Caroline Crozat nationale que les fans de Ange connaissent bien puis qu'elle y était chanteuse dans la 1ère décennie de ce siècle, merci Caro pour cette pépite ! A découvrir, leur nouvel album "Maldito Animal" !            Encore l'Amérique, ils revendiquant l'influence des plus grands artistes du genre des 70's, veuillez jeter une oreille attentive à "MYTH OF LOGIC" élevés aux sons de ELP, Genesis, Yes, Saga ou encore Rush. Sorti la semaine dernière, leur 4ème album ""The Memory Of After" est basé sur un concept fort bien développé dont je vous invite à prendre connaissance sur leur site ou page BANDCAMP afin de mieux vous imprégner de cette belle histoire mais un peu longue à résumer ici... Ça tombe bien, deux groupes d'influences de nos amis américains sont également de la partie dans cette émission ! D'abord leurs voisins canadiens de RUSH avec un extrait de l'excellent "Hemispheres" paru en 1978. Rush qui avait mis fin à ses activités il y a 10 ans suite à l'état de santé de son batteur et auteur Neil Peart qui décédera malheureusement peu de temps après. S'agissant d'une rare formation à trois n'ayant pas été modifiée depuis 1974, s'étant particulièrement montrée soudée tout au long de sa belle carrière et sans l'apport des textes de Neil, il n'était pas raisonnable de penser à une éventuelle reprise d'activité. Or, les deux survivants de la bande Geddy Lee et Alex Lifeson ont décidé de partir en tournée pour rendre hommage à leur pote. Une percussionniste allemande (Anika Nilles) a donc été recrutée et le tio s'apprête à donner une série de concert en Amérique du Nord, au plus grand bonheur des fans du groupe auquel la plateforme ARTE a mis en ligne un excellent et émouvant documentaire à ne pas rater !  L'autre groupe diffusé ayant inspiré nos jeunes américains : GENESIS. Extrait dans cet émission de l'album "We Can't Dance", ultime enregistrement studio avec Phil Collins paru en 1991. Je sais que ce groupe a toujours divisé les fans, certains ne jurant que par la période Peter Gabriel. Pour votre serviteur, c'est surtout après le départ de Steve Hackett que la musique est devenue globalement moins intéressante malgré quelques pépites en cherchant bien dans les productions des 80"s. Mais je considère (sans aucunement vouloir le comparer à la période des 70's) que cet album était d'un niveau supérieur à ceux de la précédente décennie, jouissant d'une excellente production et regorgeant de véritables perles. A redécouvrir peut-être ? ... Pour les purs et durs de la période Gabriel, l'actu du groupe c'est bien sur la réédition avec un nouveau mastering de "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" !  Puisque nous sommes sur les terres d'Albion, profitons en pour faire un petit pas de côté sur la piste (cela dit bien large !) du rock progressif avec FLEETWOOD MAC  (alors encore anglais) et un extrait de "Bare Trees". Faut dire qu'à l'époque le genre inspirait beaucoup de musiciens à l'instar de Danny Kirwan qui signe l'extrait instrumental diffusé dans ce numéro pour son ultime collaboration avec le groupe avant que ses excès de consommation d'alcool ne le rende erratique et irascible avec ses camarades... En revanche, s'il fallait vraiment des étiquettes, pas de discussion sur leur appartenance au genre qui nous réunit chaque jeudi : GENTLE GIANT ! Retour ici sur cet album concept autour d'une interview fictive qui se voulait sarcastique vis à vis des médias et de l'industrie musicale de l'époque, le fabuleux "In'terview" paru en 1976. TALE CUE est le groupe italien de l'étape avec un album tardif car si la formation remonte aux années 80 (à Milan pour être précis), elle n'aura pas donné suite à son premier projet avant aujourd'hui...Si on peut le regretter en constatant la qualité, le sens de la mélodie de cette nouvelle galette "Eclipse Of The Midnight Sun",  croisons les doigts pour que cette fois Tale Cue soit sur les rails et à défaut d'être sur la RAÏ , il sera avec bonheur sur SUN ! (voir aussi la bio du groupe sur le site du spécialiste Louis De Ny )  Cinq années de sont écoulées depuis la dernière production de Mariusz Duda alias LUNATIC SOUL mais le bassiste/chanteur de Riverside est bien excusé car il nous livre un excellent double album ("The World Under Unsen" ), le constat du temps de retrouvé pour l'inspiration et une production soignée ! La preuve en extrait dans cet épisode !  Rares sont les numéros d'Amarok sans la french touch ! Deux générations se côtoient dans ce numéro, d'abord (priorité aux aînés ! ) JEAN-LUC PONTY, le violoncelliste normand élevé au jazz puis s'orientant vers la fusion à force de fréquenter des individus comme Franck Zappa ! Retour sur son album "Civilized Evil" en 1980, une galette sans doute plus vendue à l'international qu'ici même, à (re) découvrir absolument ! Et puis le prog contemporain représenté par EDENYA dont je ne sais plus comment vous dire du bien, notamment de cet excellent nouvel opus "The Secret Destination You Are Looking For" à écouter comme on ferait un voyage au travers de différents courants du genre  :  rock, folk, ambiants...Le tout servi par la voix de la nouvelle recrue Ingrid  : écoutez voir !  Thierry Joigny Chaque jeudi, à 20h Suivez Amarok sur Facebook également sur Instagram

Dan and Steven each attended different Steve Hackett concerts recently. Dan went to the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix on November 11th, and Steven went to the second of the Orpheum Theatre shows in Los Angeles November 14th. Hear them share their experiences of this tour in which Steve Hackett plays solo and Genesis cuts alongside musicians Nad Sylvan (vocals), Nick D'Virgilio (drums), Roger King (keys), Jonas Reingold (bass), and Rob Townsend (sax).

Joining us on the third episode of the "Rockabilly 2 Rachmaninoff" series, is conductor Bradley Thachuk. Maestro Thachuk, is the Music Director of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra (NSO). He has been connected to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for over 10 years, conducting occasional Pops and Rock series performances each concert season. Post-pandemic, he's served as the conductor of the Rock series, which is comprised of three concerts per season.  A versatile and diverse musician, Maestro Thachuk has also established himself globally as one of the handful of conductors who moves easily between the classical and rock worlds. He is a highly sought-after symphonic arranger, with numerous collaborations. Recent and upcoming projects include Steve Hackett of Genesis, the music of Leonard Cohen, a tribute to the Tragically Hip, Dave Mason of Fleetwood Mac and Traffic, ABC's Dancing with the Stars franchise, Tony-Award winning Heather Headley, Sarah Slean, Chantal Kreviazuk, The Beach Boys, and Air Supply.

1975 found Genesis in a time of transition. After coming off a lengthy and technically difficult tour for their 1974 album The Lamb LIes Down On Broadway, most everyone was a little burned out. Peter Gabriel ended up leaving the band to embark on a solo career (one that would land him in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame) and the band were left with a lengthy audition process to replace him. Meanwhile, guitarist Steve Hackett had been accumulating music he'd written to keep him sane on the road during the difficult Lamb tour. But not only did Steve have pieces leftover from Genesis sessions, he'd begun to write pieces that might not make sense in the context of the band - acoustic pieces and songs written for a woman's voice. So while on a break from the band, he conjured up Voyage of the Acoylyte - his first solo record released on the same label as Genesis, Charisma. To help Steve lay down these track, he enlisted the help of bandmates Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins (who would go onto replace Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis after dozens of singers were deemed unworthy). The opening Ace of Wands is a real showcase for Steve's guitar playing - crisp tone with technique that creates a rich soundscape. And while he does do a bit of singing on the record, he leaves the vocals to more capable collaborators like Sally Oldfield on Shadow of the Hierophant and Phil Collins on Star of Sirius. While some of this might have made sense on a Genesis album, some of the acoustic pieces or parts accompanied by his brother John Hackett on flute stand out as something different to what his band would usually produce. With a loose concept around the names of Tarot Cards, Voyage of the Acolyte takes you on a heroes journey with all sorts of incredible textures and sounds with Steve's guitar as the main focus. 50 years later, he still plays these songs live and they fit in very well with the classic Genesis songs that Steve still honors live. 1975 found Genesis in a time of transition. After coming off a lengthy and technically difficult tour for their 1974 album The Lamb LIes Down On Broadway, most everyone was a little burned out. Peter Gabriel ended up leaving the band to embark on a solo career (one that would land him in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame) and the band were left with a lengthy audition process to replace him. Meanwhile, guitarist Steve Hackett had been accumulating music he'd written to keep him sane on the road during the difficult Lamb tour. But not only did Steve have pieces leftover from Genesis sessions, he'd begun to write pieces that might not make sense in the context of the band - acoustic pieces and songs written for a woman's voice. So while on a break from the band, he conjured up Voyage of the Acoylyte - his first solo record released on the same label as Genesis, Charisma. To help Steve lay down these track, he enlisted the help of bandmates Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins (who would go onto replace Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis after dozens of singers were deemed unworthy). The opening Ace of Wands is a real showcase for Steve's guitar playing - crisp tone with technique that creates a rich soundscape. And while he does do a bit of singing on the record, he leaves the vocals to more capable collaborators like Sally Oldfield on Shadow of the Hierophant and Phil Collins on Star of Sirius. While some of this might have made sense on a Genesis album, some of the acoustic pieces or parts accompanied by his brother John Hackett on flute stand out as something different to what his band would usually produce. With a loose concept around the names of Tarot Cards, Voyage of the Acolyte takes you on a heroes journey with all sorts of incredible textures and sounds with Steve's guitar as the main focus. 50 years later, he still plays these songs live and they fit in very well with the classic Genesis songs that Steve still honors live. Hi everybody, I'm incredibly delighted to welcome STEVE HACKETT as my guest for this episode of The Talk Music Podcast.Steve is one of the most innovative and influential guitarists to emerge from the progressive rock movement. Born in 1950, he spent a year in Vancouver at the age of seven before growing up in the UK, eventually rising to prominence as a member of GENESIS, which he joined in 1971. His debut with the band came on Nursery Cryme, where his distinctive, textured playing helped shape Genesis' unique sound during their most acclaimed era. Hackett was central to the creation of progressive rock landmarks such as Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and the ambitious double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. After contributing to Wind & Wuthering in 1977, Hackett left the group, eager to explore his own creative path. He was later inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of Genesis.Even before leaving the band, Hackett had begun forging a solo career, releasing his debut album Voyage of the Acolyte in 1975. Over the following decades, he built an extraordinary body of work, from Spectral Mornings to the darker tones of Guitar Noir, as well as forays into classical guitar with albums like Momentum. In the 2010s, he revisited his Genesis years with the Genesis Revisited projects, reintroducing the band's 1970s masterpieces to a new generation of listeners. In total, Steve has released over 30 solo albums, the most recent being the brilliant The Circus and the Nightwhale.Steve Hackett has secured his place as one of the greats of modern guitar, never ceasing to push boundaries. It was truly an honour for me to chat with him. Genesis was one of the main reasons I entered the world of music, and I had the privilege of seeing them perform numerous times. Our conversation covers his time with Genesis, his reasons for leaving to go solo, info about his amazing fellow musicians joining him on tour and his continued passion for songwriting and performing around the world—including some upcoming Canadian dates. While the first of our two year in review episodes focused on the albums we reviewed and authors & podcasters we hosted on the show, Part 2 drills down on the live concerts we talked about and the 15 artists & legends we had the good fortune to interview on UAWIL in 2024. We knew that when The Wolf left Europe for the American midwest, there would be fewer opportunities to see live shows by the bands we love. But we made the most of it with some killer concerts including taking a disappointed 9 year old to see Journey (He's not the leads singer of Journey!?!), taking Action Jackson to his first Steve Hackett show, laughing and singing along with Colin Hay and finally seeing Wolfgang Van Halen live. But the real story is around the amazing performers we welcomed in 2024, almost doubling the number we hosted in 2023 and tripling the number of Rock N Roll Hall of Famers. We welcomed Steve Hackett (Genesis) for the 2nd time as well as his fellow Hall of Famers Guy Fletcher (Dire Straits) and the legendary Steve Howe (Yes, Asia). While the first of our two year in review episodes focused on the albums we reviewed and authors & podcasters we hosted on the show, Part 2 drills down on the live concerts we talked about and the 15 artists & legends we had the good fortune to interview on UAWIL in 2024. We knew that when The Wolf left Europe for the American midwest, there would be fewer opportunities to see live shows by the bands we love. But we made the most of it with some killer concerts including taking a disappointed 9 year old to see Journey (He's not the leads singer of Journey!?!), taking Action Jackson to his first Steve Hackett show, laughing and singing along with Colin Hay and finally seeing Wolfgang Van Halen live. But the real story is around the amazing performers we welcomed in 2024, almost doubling the number we hosted in 2023 and tripling the number of Rock N Roll Hall of Famers.
