Interview by Kris PetersAcclaimed musical innovator and six-time Grammy nominee, Steven Wilson, will bring his highly anticipated The Overview Tour to Australia this November. His arrival will follow a massive run of UK, European and American dates and celebrates the release of his eighth solo album, The Overview, out now via Fiction Records.Australian fans can expect a captivating live experience from one of contemporary music's most boundary-pushing, genre bending artists. Accompanied by accomplished and seasoned veterans including Nick Beggs on bass (Mute Gods, Steve Hackett), legendary jazz keyboardist, Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Ray Manzarek), Craig Blundell on drums (Steve Hackett, Frost) and Randy McStine on guitars (Marco Minnemann, The Fringe) this world-class line up will bring the expansive, progressive soundscapes to life in a way that can only be experienced in a live setting. The Overview is a 42-minute conceptual journey inspired by the “overview effect” of astronauts viewing Earth from space, and marks a return to the long-form progressive style Steven Wilson redefined with the iconic Porcupine Tree and his earlier solo work. Featuring two ambitious tracks and immersive spatial audio production, The Overview blends progressive sprawl with cinematic electronics and lush, immersive vibes all wrapped in spatial audio wizardry. It's a bold addition to his repertoire which also includes six Grammy nominations, three consecutive UK Top 5 albums and a string of iconic remixes for artists including, Pink Floyd, The Who, King Crimson and Tears For Fears. The Australian tour promises to be a thrilling and dynamic experience. Expect a set packed with The Overview's mind-bending sprawl, alongside cuts from his acclaimed and peerless career.HEAVY had the pleasure of chatting with Wilson, in an enlightening chat that proves why the man is so highly regarded in the music industry. One of the questions we asked focused on the length of his songs and whether the global shortening of attention spans comes into his thinking when writing."The simple answer is I try not to think about the listener when I mark art," he answered honestly. "That sounds very selfish and self-indulgent, and it is, but I've always believed that artists - if I can pretentiously call myself that - should never be thinking about their audience when they create the art, I think by definition it is a selfish act, and you just hope that people want to go with you on that journey. You hope that people will give you the benefit of the doubt. I have a fairly loyal fan base that listen to everything I do. Even if they moan about it, and they complain it's not what they want they still go with me on that journey (smiles), which I think is something that I've built up over the years, that kind of loyalty. Also, I think there's a sense of providing the alternative. There's always been this notion in pop and rock of alternative music. Providing the alternative to whatever is the mainstream at the moment. The mainstream at the moment, as you suggested, is very immediate, short, synthesized pop music. Usually sung by female solo artists. That seems to be very much the prevalent, mainstream, pop formula. So here I am kind of providing the alternative to that. There are people that want that. There are people who want to engage on a deeper level and are prepared to sit and listen to a longer piece of music. So in that sense I see myself as the alternative to the mainstream, and there's always an audience for that."In the full interview, Steve runs us through his busy schedule, tells us what has changed since his last visit, his backing band and what they bring to the live show, The Overview and how fans responded, the conceptual story it is based on and how it transpired to verse, the balance of writing long compositions in the face of people's shortening attention spans, the musical atmosphere generated in his music and the process of bringing it to life, constructing set lists when so many of his songs are lengthy and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We're incorrigible Genesis fans. We hail every bit of output from 1970 to 1978. We even go further than that. But here, for episode 127, we stop and lovingly gaze at the band's final album of the '70s, the first after the departure of guitarist Steve Hackett, and a work that some mark as the band's departure from prog rock. Not so, say we! Spectral, ghostly, gauzy, playful, lush as all get-out...and total prog. Celebrating independent artistry, all formats will be released on Jonas's own label, Reingold Records: https://www.jonasreingold.se/ Reingold has enlisted a stellar lineup of world-class musicians to bring his vision to life. Among them is his longtime friend and musical companion, Steve Hackett (Genesis), who delivers breathtaking guitar work throughout the album. Drum legends Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest), Nick D'Virgilio (Big Big Train, Spock's Beard, Mr. Big), and Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson, Steve Hackett, Frost) provide a rhythm section of extraordinary depth. For the first time, Reingold collaborates with vocalist John Mitchell (Asia, Lonely Robot, Frost, Arena), whose gritty, soulful voice perfectly complements Reingold's melodic compositions. Additionally, Randy McStine delivers lead guitar firepower, marking their first collaboration since The Fringe in 2016. The album also features an all-star lineup, including Lalle Larsson, Andy Tillison, Tomas Bodin, Luke Machin, Göran Edman, Rob Townsend, Roger King, and Krister Jonsson, among others. Recorded across Nashville, Los Angeles, Germany, and Austria, the album delivers a breathtaking sonic experience, mixed by five-time Grammy-winning engineer Chris Lord-Alge (Rolling Stones, Muse, Tina Turner, Prince) at his Los Angeles studio, MIX LA.

FRED (450 mill.) På jord. Mellem mennesker. I sindet. I hjertet. The last time Genesis keyboard player extraordinaire Tony Banks came on the show was a few years ago, and we discussed a box set of his solo albums. Since then there has been a final Genesis tour, “The Last Domino?”, which I got to see the opening and closing nights of, and Tony now has a new boxset compiling his three classical albums “7”, “6”, and “5”. The first half of the interview we take a deep dive into that process which I hope you'll find interesting. Creating classical music isn't something we've really explored on the podcast before. In the second half of the interview Tony shares details of an upcoming boxset of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, and he also confirms details of a reissue of their 60's debut album “From Genesis To Revelation”, which in the past has been ignored from official Genesis reissue campaigns. We talk about how he feels he is perceived by Genesis fans, and whether he's tempted to emulate the very successful touring approach of former Genesis bandmate Steve Hackett, who incidentally he also clarifies his feeling about during our chat. I think this conversation is quite something. Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcastX: @signalspodcast

En esta segunda parte comentamos: La música, los sonidos y las letras de las dos canciones siguientes, «I Know What I Like (in your Wardrobe)» y «Firth of Fifth». Greetings everyone! Welcome back to the podcast. We've made it to episode 8, and I'm thrilled to introduce my guest, Mr. Steve Hackett. This episode is particularly special to me because I get to chat with a man who was a huge part of my all-time favorite band, Genesis. A band that had a profound impact on my musical evolution. It still feels surreal that I know Steve, that he's had me play on several of his recent records, and that I even had the chance to perform live with him and his incredible band a couple of years ago. These experiences have been truly remarkable for me. What stands out about Steve is not just his extraordinary musicianship, but his genuine kindness. With a long and storied career in the music industry, he has countless stories to share and a wealth of wisdom to impart. This interview was a real joy for me, as Steve's responses were both candid and insightful. We delved into his early days before Genesis, his experiences as a young musician in London, and the difficult decision to leave the band. We also discussed his solo career and the process of building his brand, as well as how a life in music impacts personal relationships. It's an insightful and enjoyable conversation that I'm excited for you to hear. Cheers! #nickdvirgilio #ndv #stevehackett #podcast #soyouwanttobeamusician #musiclife

Here on First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we endeavor to bring you stories from guests about the first time they saw a particular band and how that impacted their life. For FCM 9, we're joined by dear friend of the show Amanda Lehmann as she relates going to see Rainbow in 1980 as she was still a wee lass. Amanda has grown up to be an extraordinary singer and guitar player and you have to know that seeing a legend like Ritchie Blackmore when she was just 12 had a profound effect on her musical journey and career. We've hosted her on the show before (Eps 61 & 70) and seen her play live with Steve Hackett in the UK and so enjoyed hearing her tell the tale of this important night in her young life. Not only do we dive into the live performance by a star-studded band (Ritchie on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Cozey Powell on drums, Don Airey on keys, Graham Bonnet on vocals) but we talk about her journey on the train, through town and up to the front of the stage to see her heroes in action. Hear Amanda talk about seeing Graham Bonnet with short hair, a Hawaiian shirt and shades and about returning to that same venue to play with Steve Hackett on his recent live release decades later. It's a full circle journey with Amanda Lehmann, one that we think you'll enjoy as much as we did. What the Riff?!?
1978 - December: The Doobie Brothers “Minute By Minute”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2024 36:36

There are two distinct eras of music by The Doobie Brothers.  From their formation in 1970 until 1975, Tom Johnston was the lead vocalist, and the group had a mainstream rock sound, with some folk and “California Country” influences.  Starting in 1975, Michael McDonald joined the group as a keyboardist, as well as providing lead vocal work to help Johnston, who was having health problems at the time.  Over the following years, Johnston would have less influence as he neared retirement from the group in 1977.  Michael McDonald would influence the group into a more soulful sound, often called “blue eyed soul.”  Today we would call this “yacht rock.”Minute By Minute, the eighth studio album from the group, comes from the height of the McDonald era.  It is a high water mark for the Doobie Brothers both commercially and critically.  The album would spend 87 weeks on the Billboard 200 album charts in the U.S., topping the charts in five of those weeks.  It would also produce multiple nominations and wins at the Grammy awards in 1980 including Record and Song of the Year wins for “What a Fool Believes.”The Doobie Brothers would break up in 1982, then reform with Johnston back as front man in 1987.  Michael McDonald would rejoin the band full time in 2019 in time for their 50th anniversary tour. You can still find them on tour today.Rob brings us this soulful album for today's podcast. What A Fool BelievesThe lyrics of this hit narrate the story of a man who meets an old crush and tries to rekindle their relationship, only to find out that there never really was a relationship in the first place.  Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote this single, which became a number 1 hit in the US and Canada.Dependin' On YouMichael McDonald and Patrick Simmons wrote this song, and Simmons takes over lead singer duties.  It went to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Latin-infused call-and-response song celebrates a rock solid love that is always there.Don't Stop to Watch the WheelsThis shuffle beat deeper cut is sung by Patrick Simmons, and was the B-side from the single release of “What a Fool Believes.” “Look out, hold on, don't stop to watch the wheels go 'round.  Look out, hold on, I got to cover ground.”Minute By MinuteThe title track finds Michael McDonald handling lead vocals, and was written by McDonald and Lester Abrams.  The single was released in April of 1979, and it went to number 14 on the US charts.  The smooth keyboard-driven sound reflects the  Motown inspiration, and is a hallmark song of the “yacht rock” genre. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Every Which Way But Loose by Eddie Rabbitt (from the motion picture “Every Which Way But Loose”)Clint Eastwood would take a break from his action and western movies for this comedy with an orangutan co-star named Clyde. STAFF PICKS:Don't Stop Me Now by Queen Bruce leads off this week's staff picks with a single from Queen's "Jazz" album.  While this tribute to hedonism did well in the UK, it only hit number 86 on the US charts.  It would grow in popularity over time, and would be featured in multiple commercials including Toyota, L'Oréal, and American Idol.Double Vision by ForeignerLynch features a song from Foreigner's second album of the same name.  It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Surprisingly, the inspiration for the song title was an event at a hockey game when a goalie had to be removed after a collision on the ice because he was experiencing double vision.Homicide by 999 Wayne brings us a band from London that is named for the number used in the UK to reach emergency services.  This punk-infused song takes a tongue-in-cheek look at serial killers.  While a top 40 hit in the UK, it didn't chart in the States.  You might recognize this song from the soundtrack to the John Wick series, “The Continental.”Follow You Follow Me by Genesis Rob closes out the staff picks with a softer song from the progressive group Genesis, the closer from their album “...And Then There Were Three...”  The group had condensed to the three members of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, after former member Steve Hackett chose to leave.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Steamer Lane Breakdown by The Doobie BrothersWe get a little double dip of the Doobies as we exit today's podcast on this instrumental number.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Welcome to a Very Special Episode of the podcast celebrating the show's 3rd Anniversary! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, when musicians like me couldn't play live. It was a bleak time for all of us. I needed to find a creative outlet and so I started this podcast. From the beginning it grew quickly and exponentially. It's been ranked for some time now in the Top 1% of all podcasts. I have listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries, and it has won several awards! My guests have included many of the world's most famous musicians and other creatives.Last year to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary I played excerpts from several guest interviews. But for this 3rd Anniversary show I wanted to do something different - and fun. So here's what I decided. After each interview I ask my guest to record a short promo for the podcast. I use these promos at the beginning of other guest interviews. Everyone does their promo a little differently in their own style. After all, they're artists! So I thought it would be fun to put together a montage of promos featuring a slew of my guests. The entire list is below.I want to thank my guests and my listeners for the success of the podcast. As I like to say - Keep On Rockin'! Featured Guests:"Cousin Brucie" Morrow, John Lodge, Ted Nugent, Al Kooper, Gary Puckett, Suzi Quatro, Tony Orlando, William Lee Golden, Richie Furay, Peter Noone, Timothy B. Steve Hackett is not only a truly talented guitarist and songwriter but he's a bit of a workaholic. He rewards his fans by touring the world every year, releasing new material on a regular basis and live albums from the themed tours he's led. And though he's in the midst of his Foxtrot at 50 Tour (for which he's already released a live album) we're proud to welcome him back to The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast (hear him ahead of the Foxtrot at 50 Tour on UAWIL #87) as he wraps up his final leg of the tour. The Circus and The Nightwhale is his latest release, an autobiographical concept album of his life growing up near Battersea Power Station, forging out into the world of rock music and eventually finding happiness in his life. It's the most prog/concept album he's offered since he was in Genesis and he speaks with us about how he approached this album differently than others. The opening track People of the Smoke stirs memories of growing up in London and sets the tone for a brilliant album full of tapping, tremolos and other tricks at which Steve is so adept. Hear Steve talk about channeling Jeff Beck, using one of Brian May's guitars and why you don't want him playing bass on your album. He's proud that the album has hit #1 on the UK Rock Chart and to be celebrated on the cover of Prog Magazine. In the second part of the episode, The Wolf & Action Jackson travel to Jacksonville, FL to hear Steve debut songs from The Circus and The Nightwhale live, to hear Foxtrot in its entirety and some classic Hackett solo songs as well. It made for a very special night for your intrepid hosts and one very special episode of UAWIL. This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985) Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Throwbacks are where I re-release old episodes from the archives. So don't worry if you have heard it already, as 'New episodes' will continue to come out on Sundays. To get some of the old episodes heard.~~~Our first guest today is Steve Hackett from the UK, and former guitarist of the British band Genesis, and Steve has been kind enough to come on between tours to share his UFO experience. While standing on Itaipu Beach in Niterói Brazil, he witnessed with several others, a strange configuration of red lights ascending into the sky. The UFO case was also reported in the local newspaper, as many others had reported seeing the objects along the edges of Niterói. Then we head to Virginia in the United States to speak with Catherine about her paranormal experiences, starting with one from her college days when she received a late night visit from a very recently passed friend that left her terrified; then the following night, Catherine's friend came to her in a dream.Steve Hackett's Website:https://www.hackettsongs.comMore information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-165-niteroi-ufos-a-friends-last-goodbye/Want to share your encounter on the show?
