As a founding member of the band Toto, Steve Lukather is well aware of the song you probably know him for. But Steve, known to most as “Luke”, has plenty of other claims to fame. Luke is a seriously talented guitarist and writer with more than a dozen albums to his name from Toto alone, not to mention an almost infinite number of credits and Grammys from his session work with stars like Paul McCartney and Quincy Jones. It all started with the enthusiasm that Luke’s parents expressed for a musical career, guiding him toward frequent lessons, hard work, and the practice of showing up to a studio every day and putting in the hours. Being a working man is what led him to where he is — and, as any young player would dream, it’s also what got him the ultimate compliment from Jimmy Page. Follow me on Instagram at @davidduchovny. A killer song that almost killed the band, and a musical friendship that lead to some surprising results. Talk To Ya Later, originally by The Tubes, covered by Richard Marx. Outro music is Save It For Later by The English Beat, not that anyone was ever confused preparing for this episode.

STEVE LUKATHER DENIES RUMORS OF PLAYING GUITAR ON NEW VAN HALEN ALBUM TOTO's Steve Lukather has dismissed recent reports suggesting he will play guitar on a new VAN HALEN album. Earlier this week, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Alex Van Halen was working on a collection of previously unreleased VAN HALEN recordings, with Lukather assisting in completing them. In a paywalled Guitar World article, Alex was quoted as saying: “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and often worked together. There's no one better suited to help me through this process.” Lukather, seemingly surprised by the comment, responded in the same article: “Did Alex say that? Oh, in that case, the news is true. Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It's true that we worked on this together.” However, on Saturday (March 15), Lukather took to Instagram to clarify his involvement, writing: “For the record: Ever since Alex Van Halen mentioned we were going to work together, there's been a huge misunderstanding. I will NEVER play a single note on a VAN HALEN song—ever! Al asked me to help sort through a ton of unfinished recordings of him and Ed writing and recording together—music that never saw the light of day. That's all I know at this point. The idea that I would play guitar on this is ridiculous. I have too much love and respect for Ed and his music. Plus, I don't play anything like him. My role is more of a co-producer, if anything. I'm honored Al would ask me. Let's see…” Alex has previously stated there's enough material in the VAN HALEN vault for “three or four albums.” On Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast, he shared: “I've talked about it loosely, and I'm a bit superstitious, but I can say this: We're going through the vault, digging into the ideas Ed left behind. There's some great stuff in there. When you're in the thick of it, sometimes you miss the real gems. It's only when you revisit them later that you realize, ‘Wow, I forgot about this. This kicks ass.' But it takes time. I want to do it right.” LUKATHER & VAN HALEN'S HISTORY Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather had a long history of collaboration. Lukather played the main riff on Michael Jackson's Beat It, while Eddie provided the iconic solo. Eddie also played bass on Lukather's debut solo album and made a guest appearance on Steve's 2003 Christmas album, Santamental. Following Eddie's passing in 2020, Lukather reflected on their friendship in an interview with Metal Master Kingdom: “It's still hard for me—the wound is deep. I was honored to be Ed's real friend, not just a guitar buddy. Our friendship lasted over 40 years. I love all the guys in VAN HALEN. I'm Switzerland when it comes to their relationships. I was just on Sammy's [Hagar] show, and he was great to me. Mike [Anthony] is always kind. But I've always stayed especially close with Al. Losing Ed left a hole in my heart that won't go away. We didn't just talk about guitars—we talked about our kids, our lives. Toward the end, we mostly just bragged about our sons. That's what mattered.” While Lukather's role in the VAN HALEN project remains undefined, one thing is clear—his deep respect for Eddie ensures the music's legacy will be handled with care. In an unexpected turn of events, reports from the Netherlands suggest that Alex Van Halen is working on a brand-new Van Halen album, and he's enlisted Steve Lukather to help complete the project! For years, speculation surrounded the Van Halen name—whether it was the abandoned tribute tour featuring Jason Newsted and Joe Satriani or Sammy Hagar's Best of All Worlds Tour keeping the music alive. But now, it looks like a 13th Van Halen studio album is actually happening! Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he's working with Lukather, stating, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can.” Lukather responded, “Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It is true that we worked on it together.” Lukather's connection to the Van Halen brothers runs deep—from jamming together to Eddie playing bass on Lukather's solo album and even collaborating on Michael Jackson's Beat It! But the big question remains:

The Stylistics announce their first new album in almost two decades titled "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL," which will be released worldwide on February 21, 2025. The soul legends known for their iconic hits, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," "You Are Everything," "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and more, earning them 5 Gold singles and 3 Gold albums, will bring audiences their first new single from the 21-track album "Yes, I Will," featuring Shania Twain, on February 14. "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL," produced by Tom Cridland and Executive Produced by Deborah Cridland, will feature a who's who of legendary and noted artists who collaborated on the album alongside Twain: Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones, Gene Simmons of KISS, The Elton John Band (including Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone), Bill Champlin of Chicago, Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top, Steve Lukather of Toto, Tower of Power, Ray Parker, Jr., Jay Graydon, Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, The Real Thing, Nathan East and Carly Paoli. For "Yes, I Will," Twain had been invited to sing on one of the tracks already written, but she had in mind the perfect song for the album that she had co-written with Nathan East, (to which Tom Cridland contributed), that was a soulful fit for The Stylistics. Ray Parker Jr., Steve Lukather and East performed on the track that was the last song recorded for the collection, and is the first new track in 17 years to be released by the legendary group. Says Twain, "I'm so happy that this song I wrote 'Yes, I Will' has found a home on The Stylistics album. That is just so exciting. It's a special song that came together on one special day at my home where I was hanging out with some friends and musicians. So I think it turned out great and I'm just really excited to share it with the whole world." Airrion Love from The Stylistics adds, "I fell in love with Shania Twain the first time I heard 'You're Still the One' - a great song that I still love. When we heard there might be a chance to do something with her we said, "Hell yeah!"" The Stylistics' original members Airrion Love and Herb Murrell, together with Jason Sharp who joined the group in 2011, recorded their vocals at Spice House Sound in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at Wright Way Studios in Baltimore, Maryland. Tom Cridland arranged and recorded the background vocals in the Scottish Highlands and at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Elton John Band including Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone laid down the instrumental tracks at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL" was the last album ever made at the legendary recording studio. Most of the songs were written by Tom Cridland together with Anthony King of Blackpool and Anthony's wife, Fiona Shaw. Two tracks were written by Airrion Love, "Sad Tomorrows" and "I Get A Feeling." Guest host Richard Syrett (Twitter) was joined by researcher Stephen Sakellarios to discuss reincarnation, his past life experience, and a conspiracy theory regarding 19th-century author Charles Dickens. According to Sakellarios, Dickens did not originate "A Christmas Carol" but instead adapted it from the works of Mathew Franklin Whittier and his wife, Abby. He argued that elements of mysticism and spiritualism in "A Christmas Carol" are inconsistent with Dickens' other works. Sakellarios highlighted evidence such as Mathew's affiliation with spiritualist organizations and Abby's mystic poetry, arguing that Dickens, a materialist and skeptic, could not have authentically incorporated such themes.Sakellarios referenced instances in Dickens' career that suggest a pattern of appropriation, such as his involvement with illustrator Robert Seymour, whose work on The Pickwick Papers he believes Dickens manipulated and claimed credit for, driving Seymour to despair. Similarly, he cited a letter Dickens wrote with a Freudian slip that implies he "fastened on" rather than created "A Christmas Carol." The Whittiers likely sought to inspire social change through the story, but after Abby's death, Mathew entrusted the manuscript to Dickens, who reworked it under financial pressure, he suggested.Sakellarios described an intriguing connection to what he believes is a past life as Mathew Franklin Whittier, centering on an architectural detail in a house believed to be tied to Mathew and Abby. The story begins with a vision of Abby leading Mathew up the stairs of a house and into a small, hidden room resembling a linen closet. This unique feature—a door seemingly cut into the wall, leading to a nine-by-nine room midway between floors—turned out to exist in two houses linked to Abby's family property. The architectural detail, which Sakellarios had never encountered before, matched his vision and was corroborated during research. This and other details solidify Sakellarios's belief that he is the reincarnation of Whittier.TOTO, The Beatles, & Yacht RockIn the first hour, musician Steve Lukather reflected on his extraordinary career with a mix of humility and gratitude, emphasizing the milestones that have defined his journey. As a founding member of TOTO, he experienced global success, including Grammy-winning albums and hit singles like "Africa" and "Rosanna". Lukather talked about his work as a session guitarist on numerous iconic projects, including Michael Jackson's Thriller, where he contributed to tracks "The Girl Is Mine" and "Beat It". He described working with legends Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as surreal, particularly given his lifelong admiration for The Beatles, who inspired his love for music after he saw them perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Lukather also discussed his participation in the recent Yacht Rock documentary.

Steve Lukather is one of the most documented guitarists in the hit-making biz. He grew up as an L.A. teen with a crew of fellow musicians who would go on to make their livings at the top of the session scene. By the time Lukather and his pals formed Toto, they were already experienced chart-toppers. The band went on to success with hits including the rockin' “Hold the Line,” breezy, bouncing “Rosanna,” and the timeless “Africa.”As a session player, Lukather's reign in the '70s and ‘80s extended from Olivia Newton-John to Herbie Hancock to Michael Jackson. And alongside Michael McDonald—whose “I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)” included Lukather's distinctive rhythm riffage—Daryl Hall and John Oates, Kenny Loggins, Peter Cetera, and Christopher Cross (among many others) he may have earned the title of yacht rock's number one guitar player. On this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast, we're talking about our favorite Lukather tracks, from his best rhythm parts to his most rippin' solos. And even though he spends most of his playing time with the biggest names, we've managed to call up a few deep cuts.Use code EMG100 for 15% off at https://www.emgpickups.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. In 1978, a young musician from the Midwest found his way to L.A., and was ushered into the studio to record his debut album with some of the best names in the business, including Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, JD Souther, Jay Graydon, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, and Bill Champlin to create his self-titled debut album that became a must-have classic for West Coast music enthusiasts. Fast forward 46 years, and Dane Donohue is back with a brand new album titled “LA Rainbow”, which was produced by Page99's John Nixon. On this episode of Inside MusiCast, we'll discuss Dane's path to the creation of both of these albums, including some amazing stories from the debut album and how he and John Nixon found each other for the new album, “L.A. Rainbow”.

Today on another episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are again speaking to David Jolliffe for part two of our conversation that began on last week's episode. On this episode, we dig a little deeper into some of the stories David told us last week and I ask you, what other podcast gives you first hand stories about the legendary Hollywood Vampires AND Jose Ferrer in the same episode? I'll give you a moment to think. You are correct, only the Rarified Heir Podcast. Once more, we connect with David about his actress mother Glorya Lord whose credits include Mannix and The Doris Day Show among others as well as his television exec. father Richard Jolliffe. We also talk to David about his voice-over work on 70s and 80s animation, his trip to the Indianapolis 500 with Emergency!'s Kent McCord, a ridiculous and very funny story about an incident with Bruce Dern, making music with Toto's Steve Lukather and Shaun Cassidy and a whole lot more. All you need to do now is absolutely nothing but sit back, relax and hear another episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Escuchar audio
Welcome to the premiere "Song Dive" bonus episode: a way to hear the story behind a song that has made (or will soon make) our collective mixtapes & playlists! On this "Song Dive" episode, I am joined by Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, and we're talking about the story behind Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes' “Going Home (Theme From Local Hero),” which Guy produced. This new 10-minute rendition was recorded in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America, and features over 60 musical legends on the track. We also take some time to discuss tracks from Dire Straits' catalog including: Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Heavy Fuel & The Bug; working with “Weird Al” Yankovic on his Dire Straits' parody “Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies;” recording the soundtrack for The Princess Bride; the experience of mixing Dire Straits' "Live At The Rainbow, London UK, 12/1979" album from the original tapes; Guy's accreditation as a Dolby ATMOS engineer and how that factored into the new Going Home mix; bringing ATMOS to households via the Airsound Spatial speaker technology; and so much more!
